The Real Loser in Tonight's Debates: 'Project Runway'

Projectrunwayjudges_l Update: Click here to read our 'Project Runway' finale recap!

There’s been a fair amount of blogchatter (some of it right here on PopWatch) about whether or not Bravo is trying to sabotage this season of Project Runway after losing the show to Lifetime. (NBC Universal, which owns Bravo, recently won an injunction that may prevent the show from moving). There was the lack of buildup buzz, the uninspired challenges, the mediocre talent level. But today brings another blow that adds even more weight to the theory that Bravo is throwing its onetime star show under the train: The finale is up against the Presidential debate.

We know, we know. The show had this time slot long before the debates were scheduled. But why is Part 2 of the finale coming right after Part 1? Where’s our reunion episode filled with laughs, tears, and gratuitous Kenley bashing?

A colleague of mine raised the point that much of PR's core fan base cares a lot more about wedge heels than wedge issues. But even so, the debates are bound to take a huge bite out of PR's live-viewing audience, leaving the show with record low numbers for its send-off from the channel that created it. (If only we could combine the two and have, say, Michael Kors moderate the debates while McCain and Obama try on the designers' outfits. How can we know if our candidate can handle the American Empire until we see if he can handle an empire waist?)

Your turn, PopWatchers: Is this just a bad coincidence? Or is Bravo really sabotaging the show? And most importantly, which showdown will you watch tonight?

I adore PR and will watch it no matter what network has it. I also watch all reruns just incase I might have missed something. Keep up the great work finding beautiful talented designers.

If anyone knows who does the song that played when Leanne showed her collection on the runway I would appreciate it. It's kind of electric and mellow sounding.

Iana Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

Ok here is my view on the finale of project runway.I strongly believe that the Heidi and the gang had something against a black person winning project runway.Leanne"s line was boring,no colour and everything was the same.Just too many waves.Korto was by far the winner in my book.

Zet Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

Thanks, cas, there were so many ANTM people there, I wondered if I missed a crossover show somewhere. I really wanted a reunion night, if only for the inevitable Kenley bashing. And did Tim seem to have a cold and a case of the grouchies for the entire season? I don't know who's responsible for the 'sabotage', but too many things were off this season to think it was all by accident.

Myst Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

Another comment I want to make about this season is that they "purposefully" lined up Project Runway with So You Think You can Dance Finale. This was also the point where the episode was NOT replayed after Sheer Genius as it often was and in fact the next time someone could see the show was whilst the So You Think You can Dance results show was.
I know this doesn't make that much sense or difference but it was a quite evil thing Bravo did.

cas Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

yeah, i noticed dani, naima, and bianca from antm :]

kurt Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

How did Bravo sabotage the show? They didn't select the contestants or the contests. It's more that PR didn't want to give Bravo a good season.

Melissa Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

This is my first season watching PR and I loved it! I loved Korto's and Leanne's collection-but Kenley got bit in the butt by all her sassy comments.Didn't she realize that this was a professional atmosphere and that she should be a professional? I will also watch PR if it stays as fabulous as it was this season, barring any major changes from another network. I will also watch any PR reruns from any season.

Grace Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Andrew, what do your comments have to do with Project Runway? Oh, that's right, they don't have anything to do with the show. Please take your political agenda elsewhere. There are plenty of political articles and blogs out there that you can comment on instead. We can all use a break from the relentless, negative attacks that dominate the television, the presidential campaign, and apparently, your time.

Ale Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Yeah, I noticed Dani there too! And I'm pretty sure even Naima from cycle 4 was auditioning for the catwalk!

Anyway, i'm still mad that Jerrell got eliminated!

Drea Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Did anybody notice that Dani (from ANTM) was one of Koto's models????

Andrew Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Don't question Mc Cains judgment, question Obamas honesty. Too many websites are closed down when sites are referred to .... to cover his tracks ... very suspicious.

Why is Obamas GRANDMOTHER LIVING IN SUCH ABJECT POVERTY ... if Obama is the hero he tries to portray?

A few of his American dollars would have built a better shack for her.

OBAMA ... CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME .... SHAME ON YOU and you expect to stay in the white house. Vote for Mc Cain and be safe.

Jen Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

I think Bravo is sabotaging Project Runway and can't think of another plausible reason why they would schedule first-run episodes of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style in an 11 p.m. time slot. What a slap in the face that is when you're running reruns in the primetime slots. Shame on you Bravo!

Linda Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

As a die-hard PR fan, I will watch it no matter what channel it finally lands on. I don't know if I would consider it sabotage, but I did miss having a reunion show! I have to agree with the other comments that this was a lackluster season as far as contestants, but I still love Heidi, Michael, Nina, and of course, my single most reason for watching - Tim Gunn!! Keep the series going - just be sure and let us know where to find it!!

LadyParasyte Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Korto was robbed. It seemed obvious that her's was the best out of the three. They really set the bar low this season. I don't think their was diliberated sabatoge. Even if Bravo wanted to cause problems I highly doubt Heidi,Tim,Nina and Kors would go along. After all, they'd be out of their tv jobs!
I think maybe it has to do with the fact that while this season was beign filmed they were also preparing for there move to California. If I heard correctly at one point 3 seasons worth were scheduled to air all within a years time.
I think maybe they all had to much on their plates and the show suffered.

wakeforce Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

HaHa! I live on the West Coast. Got to see 'em both!

Hope C. Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I watched the debate and then the finale. The debate was far more exciting. Plus, I think it's silly and a bit ignorant to say "A colleague of mine also raised the point that much of PR’s core fanbase care a lot more about wedge heels than wedge issues. " I don't think that's true at all.

revived Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

why would Bravo try to sabotage PR? There's a court order preventing PR from going to "that other network" - they could keep it tied up forever!

Flip Wilson Phillips Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Listen up, y'all--it's sabotage!

David Dyer Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

I was thrilled it was on. This meant there was something to watch vs. there being a show I like on network TV that would have been preempted. PR was a much better use of an hour.

bleachergirl66 Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

The debate was more lively than the Finale... and I never imagined I would ever think, much less say, such a thing! Last year's finale was filled with anticipation and excitement. This year was Ho-Hum all the way. Except for the obligatory tears, there was no drama. The audience, contestants and judges were flat. Lackluster all the way. The models had more animation that anyone else! Truly a BIG disappointment. Was I perchance watching the Biggest Loser instead of the Grand Finale?!
If this was Bravo's "gottcha" plot, it worked!

JennyB Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

I would have liked a split screen with the debate on one side and PR on the other. I resorted instead to flipping at the last minute for the verdict, then back to the debate!

tobey Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

After picking the worst collection line on the show to win, I promised myself never to watch "Project Runway" no matter what channel it lands in. The only way I would watch it is if they change all the judges including Heidi Klum.

jess Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

Oh nevermind to my previous comment. I'm in California so I guess that's why I didn't miss anything. The debate was on at 6pm for me.

jess Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I watched the presidential debate and the last episode of project runway. I got to see who won. I guess I missed the big episode that was being advertised with the favorite moments and all that crap but I've seen all that before. I saw who won after the debate and that's what mattered to me

James Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Wow, all these comments and no political endorsements or angriness. Thanks for the civility, guys. I read political blogs all day long and even I watched PR. I agree though, Bravo is sabotaging the show. I was looking forward to a reunion show.

billyc Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

the debate was on?

Anne Marie Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Bravo definitely seemed to be sabatoging the show. Each week they revealed what the supposed big "surprise" for the next week was and the ads/teasers for the show were dreadful. Definitely a big difference from past seasons.

Anne Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

I don't think Bravo was trying to sabotage PROJECT RUNWAY at all! 9/8pm Wednesday is its first run time. The fact that it came up against the debate is irrelevant. That's why recording devices were invented. And it's not news that the show repeats following TOP DESIGN, so anyone could watch both the debate and PROJECT RUNWAY. If anyone could be said to be sabotaging the show, I'd say it was the Weinsteins and whoever else is producing. They chose the designers. They chose the challenges. Show content was strictly up to them. Besides, this was a season that brought us arguably the best episode ever: The Great Drag Queen Designs. I personally hope PR stays on Bravo. Let Lifetime continue its Weepy Women themes.

Kate Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

I thought they were really giving it the shaft, and thought, wait, Tim is the final judge? I am surpised there isn't any uproar about that, not that he isn't qualifyed, but he knows the contestants and gave them advice.

Cristina Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

I watched PR. I already voted (mail in ballot) and so what the candidates had to say really didn't matter to me. Besides, as previously mentioned, it's not like I can't read all about it today!

I miss the reunion show and realized that they weren't having one when they showed a 2 second thing about Korto winning Fan Favorite. I like the reunion shows. Did anyone else notice though that in the promos the announcer said something like "As Bravo says goodbye to PR after 5 seasons" or something like that, as if acknowledging that PR is going to Lifetime. (Or was)

I hope that Lifetime gets to show their LA season. Would love to see it! And Tim Gunn should ALWAYS be a judge. Could there be a more sincere and true individual out there? I strive to be like him!

michael Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

I watched the debate....then watched P.R. when they replayed it at 11pm....

Kellan Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

All I know is that this season was lackluster as far as the designers and the challenges. Who chose these designers? Mediocre talent, at best. I don't know if putting the finale against the debates was intentional, but it could have been avoidable with the usual reunion show. I'm hoping Bravo gets to keep the show, but if next season is like this one, I don't know if I'll be back, no matter what network has it.

Smiller Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Best part of PR last night: Kenley's face when they announced Tim Gunn was replacing J.Lo. Nothing better than an "Oh Sh*t" moment. O and did anyone notice that Leanne's family looked nothing like you thought they would? And who was the chick w/ Kenley's dad? His tugboat first mate?

RustyT Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

I DVRed both Project Runway & the debate, waited until 9:15 to start viewing(thereby being able to fast-forward past all the commercials and watch PR without delays), and then went back to start watching the recorded debates at 10 pm. DVRs are SO worth it!

B Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

I watched PR then tuned it to see the last 30 mins of the debate, which was fine since I got to see the candidates discuss two hot-button issues that mean a lot to me. I'd already made up my mind to watch PR rather than the debate. I'd be down for a Presidential Fashion Show any day!

Trent Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

I wonder why they left off the reunion show this year? They just did the "Fan Favorite Award" as a footnote during the show. As for who won the show...I have to say I am torn. Both Leanne and Korto had different points of view. I tend to gravitate to Korto's designs more though.

Sabrina Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

I watched them both, though neither live. Side note: can Leanne PLEASE go on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and get at least a color & cut?

frostysnowman Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Of course I watched the PR finale! I don't need to watch the debates when I can spend most of today listening to the pundits and talking heads rehash every little word over and over? One network even has body language people included in the analyses! It definitely seemed like Bravo was not promoting the show with their usual gusto this year, which was kind of sad. That show was the trailblazer for all such competition shows and deserves much more respect. I'm really afraid that Lifetime will mess it up!

Jim Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

It wasn't an issue in Oregon. The debates started at 6 PM here. Finally, SOME advantage for being in the Pacific Time Zone!

Laurie Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

I will watch the finale in reruns. Last night's debate was the best of the bunch!

Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

Now that Leanne has won, maybe she can afford some shampoo and a haircut, and perhaps something nice to wear.

Cory Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 05:56 AM EST

I do think it's suspicious the way that Bravo has been handling the show, especially with the absence of the reunion show (which really angered me, since I like it). Last night I watched Project Runway instead of the debates, since I have election fatigue.

Nix Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:56 AM EST

Dude, Sle--I bat from the left just like you, and I'm paying attention to the NLCS. Beat LA!

Luis Jr Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

If only SNL can make a Project Runway: Presidental edition.

Dottie Jo Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

I'm not really interested in the debate - I'm flipping between PR and the Phillies - Go Phils!

Brooklyn Confiential Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Also, the biggest loosers in the season of Project Runway is Kenley and Korto. These two women are at the caliber of any season of PR but will suffer because this year's crop just sucks.

Brooklyn Confidential Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

I'm diehard PR fan but I won't be able afford by wedges, platforms, or ever flipflops if the economy doesn't change so I am watching the debate. Also, it replys in NYC on at 11pm so I can watch both.

NineDaves Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

i think bravo has been sabotaging the show, and i'm totally fine with it. harvey weinstein deserves it. project runway would have been cancelled on any other network after the first few episodes of season one flopped, but bravo was smart - they believed in the product and kept rerunning it until people were hooked. bravo made project runway. and the weinstein's greed will be the death of it.

Mel Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I live in Washington state- the debate will be over at 8:00 and Project Runway starts at 9:00- we're lucky!

Kaiulani Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

Well PR is on at 6pm here and the debate is live at 3pm and replayed at 7pm so its not a big deal for me. I just want my reunion show and to also see who the fan favorite is!!!!

Em Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

Since I'm sure they won't combine the two (darn!), I'll have to catch the finale (and Michael Kors) later and watch the debate. I do agree with Jelana though- GO PHILLIES!

Margaret Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

I also am surprised there is no reunion show. I was looking forward to all the designers ganging up on Kenley and more quotable zingers from Terri. But mostly, I'm glad this season is almost over because it really has not been up to snuff.

Jelana Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

Oh, screw the debates. PR's up against the Phillies (please, PLEASE?) winning a world series berth tonight. I've been a devoted fan, but I forgot it was even going to be on. GO PHILLIES!

eyesopenedwide Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

In my opinion, PR made Bravo!
I will dvr the debate and watch PR live.
