Categories: 'American Idol', I'm Just a Geek, Stage/Theater, The Footlights

Broadwayposters_l Welcome to the very first Footlights TAQ (Theater Aptitude Quiz)! So here’s how it works: All questions and answers involve shows on Broadway, Off Broadway, or currently on tour (a few them may have recently shuttered). There is a point system for each question, so keep track accordingly as some of them are multi-part in nature. You can find the answers after the jump (then post your score on our message board). Break a leg, all!

1. Using this handy link, how many of these currently running Broadway shows DO NOT have some kind of film incarnation? (Note: movies in the works do not count) (2 pts. for each correct title)

2. What actor, currently the male lead in a Broadway production, has garnered the most Tony Awards? (5 pts.)

3. Match the American Idol alum to the show he is currently starring in (2 pts. each):
Clay Aiken                         Grease
Constantine Maroulis           Ain’t Misbehavin’
Ace Young                         Monty Python’s Spamalot
Ruben Studdard                 Rock of Ages

4. Fun With Numbers! Each entry has a number missing as part of a song lyric. Fill in the blanks and then name the musical the lyric is from.

a) “Workin’ ____ to ____, what a way to make a livin’” (1 pt. for each blank, 1 pt. for title of show)
b) “Dance ___, looks ____ and I’m still on unemployment” (1 pt. for each blank, 2 pts. for title of show)
c) “In a bar once I met this guy Dewey, and he bought me like ______ beers” (3 pts. for blank, 3pts. for title of show)
d) “______!” “No me diga!” “______!” “I never win s---!” (2 pts. for each blank, 4 pts. for title of show)
e) “I’d rather be ____ people’s favorite thing than a ______ people’s _____ favorite thing” (3 pts. for each blank, 4 pts. for title of show)

(And if you caught the sly reference made in the last entry, give yourself another point!)

5. How many different types of pills does Beverly say his wife Violet takes in the opening scene of Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County? (10 pts. for correct answer)

6. What colors are the stewardess’ uniforms on the three principal women in Boeing-Boeing? (6 pts. for correct answer)

7. Of the following actresses, who has never had a Broadway stint in Chicago? (3 pts. for correct answer)
Christina Applegate
Sandy Duncan
Melanie Griffith
Brooke Shields

8. Name the Four Seasons in Jersey Boys. (2 pts. for each correct member)

9. What is written on the chalkboard onstage behind the band in Spring Awakening? (4 pts. for correct answer)

10. In the stage version of Mamma Mia!, which ABBA song is performed at the curtain call, but not within the actual show? (3 pts. for correct answer)

I got a 42. I am getting into Broadway shows, because there is a new exhibit going on where I work. If you thought you couldn't get closer to a Broadway stage than being at a show, think again. The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the League of Professional Theatre Women will host Curtain Call: Celebrating a Century of Women Designing for Live Performance from November 17 to May 2, 2009. Everything from the costumes used in Beauty and the Beast to the set design for In the Heights is included in the exhibition that traces back to the 1897 production The Belle of New York. It's amazing. I saw Beauty and the Beast and loved it. Getting to see the costumes right in front of me was an entirely different and exciting experience. For more information, check this link:

I got 40, but that's pretty good for having my main source of theater being shows that happen to travel to Jacksonville and watching the Tonys every year.

Kim Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

83!
But I've gone to NY 6 times in the past 2 years for bway marathons so...

Lili Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

47 for this Canadian. I wish I lived closer to NY or that broadway shows would tour here in Montreal as well and not only in Toronto!

MarcDom7 Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

73.

And Denny, my wife and I got tickets to In The Heights just fine.

Broadway Nerd and Proud Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

92, not too bad, the August question was really hard and I've seen the show. And I've never seen Legally Blonde, but all the other quotes were too easy.

skye Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

wow, I really thought I loved broadway. All I could do was answer the four seasons, and guess the others. I have so much to work on :(

Andy G. Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

I got 71. I'm a little ashamed, but proud the main one's I got it wrong for are for Jukebox musicals.

NineDaves Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

man, i got a 100 too. at least i know the 4 shows a month i see aren't for nothing. but i'll admit: i guessed on question 5. you were giving 10 points so i said 10 pills. i wish that would have worked on the SATs!

Maddi Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

Oh. That was the point. Uhh, just ignore me...

Maddi Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

(4 points for title of show)
Way to give away the answer!

Abby Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

81!! I would have been ashamed of myself to ahve gotten less!

Tanya Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

81 But I'm a NY nerd, so that's about right.

denny Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

80 even! Why? Well, I did not care to see Legally Blonde and haven't been able to get the drop on tix for In The Heights or August: Osage County. Hook a pal up? Anyone?

tom Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

I got a 19. Worst. Gay. Ever.

Mardie Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

90 for me. Should I be proud of that?

Melinda65 Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

I got a 32, but I live in Iowa. The best we get in town is the local high school production every fall.

Sabrina Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

90. I'm a fierce, proud, Playbill-carrying show queen! But I already knew that. Couldn't remember the number of pills in August. That was a hard one.

leslie Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

64! Not too bad...but i am a theatre nerd!

ShoNuff Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

is it wrong that i got a 100?

E Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

I barely made the Mezzanine, and I write about theater as part of my job.

Elle Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

Only a 25 but i do live in NC where there is a devoid of theater culture.

Sara Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

Wow, I suck - only 38. And I live in the NYC suburbs! I gotta get on that.
