I didn't bust a gut laughing at this, bu I believe it's sincere. I don't understand the "desperate" option. What would Ron Howard have to be desperate about?

Congratulations, President Obama! Our time of truth and integrity has finally come!!!!!

Sally Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Why don't the entertainers get vetted for their opinions the same way "Joe the Plumber" did? And for their opinions as American, they have a platform (and media 'pets' to air their O'Bama platitudes) and the rest of us Americans do not (at least not without fear of being vetted)

JoMama Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Jo, you are a pathetic debater. First you rip me a new one for using the Huffington Post as a source because it's too liberal. Then when I point out that your articles are out-of-the-closet conservative publications, you tell me my info has to "come from the horse's mouth". But then when I give you info from Obama's web site, you say, "Bah, he's LYING, you REALLY believe what HE says?" Your arguments are going in circles and they always come back to "I'M RIGHT, YOU'RE WRONG!" I say I don't care who you vote for because you will not listen to reason and you will never listen to an opposing viewpoint. I have PROVEN to you that Obama is NOT A SOCIALIST and yet you continue to scream that he is. Nonpartisan economists, and even self-proclaimed socialists disagree with you. And what do you mean by "Obama does hide his agenda well?" Explain.

Jo Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

If information is shown that doesn't come from the horse's mouth or from a liberally-biased source it must be crap, right? You're reaction is just what I expected. lol Did you even read any of the info? Doubtful. 'I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody'. Barack Obama is a left of liberal dem who's fundamental ideology is one of socialism. Sorry you are blinded to that fact. Not entirely your fault, as he does hide his agenda very well. His tax relief will be off-set by increases in numerous other factors. His plans cost massive amounts of money; he will increase spending significantly or he will fail to keep his promises. One last thing, "I don't give a fig who you vote for". That is obvious. On the contrary, I care a great deal about the way you are voting. And that, JM, is a fundamental difference between us.

C. Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

I appreciated this. I must admit, based on the lack of African Americans in his films, I had certain thoughts about Ron and had put him in the same catagory as Woody Allen. I'm happy to have a reason to think otherwise.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Jo, I do not comprehend your opposition to Obama because you staunchly refuse to believe any piece of factual information that contradicts your opinions. I also realize you are beyond hope and I don't give a fig who you vote for. I'm just putting all this information out there in case someone else is following this exchange.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

And Jo, you screamed at me for using the Huffington Post in one of my posts!
Re your NON-nonpartisan articles:
humanevents.com: "HUMAN EVENTS is the news source President Reagan called his "favorite newspaper" and we still hold high the Reaganesque principles of free enterprise, limited government and, above all, a staunch, unwavering defense of American freedom."
heritage.org The Heritage Foundation, a "Conservative policy think tank"
Washington Times "is known for its conservative stance on political and social issues." wikipedia.org
USNews: "Despite its lurid head lines and conforming to the owner's political point of view, it tends to be more conservative than its two primary competitors, Time and Newsweek." source: Encyclopedia Britannica.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Jo, you are getting tired because you're wrong again. Read more from the Wallace interview re tax breaks & "welfare":
WALLACE: You say that Obama's tax plan amounts to welfare because he'll give refundable tax credits — in effect, checks — to 40 percent of Americans who don't pay any income tax.
MCCAIN: Federal income tax, yes.
W: Obama points out that no one will receive one of these refundable checks if they aren't at least paying payroll taxes, Social Security taxes.
And your health care plan would also give these refundable checks to that same 40 percent who don't pay income taxes, federal income taxes. So if his plan is welfare, isn't yours?
M: Well, it's — the difference is that we need to provide — it's a fundamental requirement to give people the chance to have affordable and available health insurance, or the option is to go into a big government program such as we have in Canada, in England and others.
Americans right now are without health insurance. They need to get it.

Jo Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

The government now owns the banks, all the money. If they really privatize them again, then it was a necessary step. You think they will privatize them again? If not, what do you call it?

Jo Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

JM - I do not pay federal taxes because I do not make enough money. I get everything back. Sooo, Obama wants to cut my zero tax to . . .less than zero? Give me more money back? Don't you see, I'm already getting a tax break by not paying taxes but someone else IS paying for me. And Obama wants them to pay even more.
I found information on McCains education plan. Don't know where you're looking.
You say Obama will will reduce spending. I've only referenced these few articles because frankly, I am weary of this round about discussion.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/feb/22/obamas-spending-plan/
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capital-commerce/2008/2/14/obamas-trillion-dollar-spending-plan.html
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=25496#continueA
http://www.heritage.org/Research/economy/wm2102.cfm
FWIW, I honestly don't think you comprehend my opposition to Barack Obama's fundamentals and the road I believe he will take this country down.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Fox News' Chris Wallace interview w/McCain 10/20/08:
WALLACE: But, Senator, you voted for the $700-billion bailout that's being used partially to nationalize American banks. Isn't that socialism?
MCCAIN: That is reacting to a crisis that's due to greed and excess in Washington. And what this administration is doing wrong, is not going out and buying up home loan mortgages, home mortgages, and giving people new mortgages at the new value of their home so they can stay in their home. They're bailing out the banks. They're bailing out these institutions.
W: But you voted for that.
M: Of course. It was a package that had to be enacted because the economy was about to go into the tank. That's the reason why we have governments, to help those who need help, who can't help themselves, and when time of crisis to step in and do what's necessary to preserve the lives and futures of innocent people."
According to Jo, this too is socialism.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

On Socialism. AGAIN:
Key Bush administration tax cuts are to expire Jan. 1, 2011. Obama wants to end breaks for most individuals earning more than $200,000 and families making more than $250,000; McCain does not. Obama's position would restore the top rates to where they were under President Clinton, when the economy boomed. "You see," McCain said, "he believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that help us all make more of it...this sounded a lot like socialism, and a lot of Americans are thinking along those same lines."

And while such ideas are associated with the left, it was Bush and McCain who pushed a trillion-dollar government plan to save ailing financial institutions. "If we're moving toward socialism," said Paul Beck, a professor of political science at Ohio State University, "it's a bipartisan event." source: http://www.sacbee.com/capitolandcalifornia/story/1332705.html

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

JohnMcCain.com proposes: A one-year spending pause. Freeze non-defense, non-veterans discretionary spending for a year and use those savings for deficit reduction. A one-year pause in the growth of discretionary spending will be imposed to allow for a comprehensive review of all spending programs. After the completion of a comprehensive review of all programs, projects and activities of the federal government, we will propose a plan to modernize, streamline, consolidate, reprioritize and, where needed, terminate individual programs.
Nowhere on McCain's Budget Reform web page does it mention strengthening education in this country so that we can strengthen economic growth in the future. No, his solution is to give credits to parents to move their kids to "other schools" instead of improving the public schools we have. How does this make sense? And how's he going to come up with this credit when he's frozen discretionary spending on everything but the war and veterans?

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Jo, your statement about Obama "not reducing spending" is wrong:
Senator Obama believes that our current budgeting and borrowing practices are fiscally unwise and unsustainable. This is why he strongly supports and has voted for commonsense "Pay As You Go," or "PayGo" rules, which would require any new increases in discretionary spending to be offset by a reduction in other areas of spending. Senator Obama voted against the most recent effort to raise the national debt limit. The current national debt has exceeded $8.6 trillion dollars, and nearly $4 trillion of that debt is now held by foreign governments. Our national debt and annual budget deficits effectively tax all Americans by adding to the amount of interest paid to service U.S. borrowing; Senator Obama would rather invest these hundreds of billions of dollars into national priorities, such as securing our homeland, improving our schools and providing needed benefits to our veterans. Source: obama.senate.gov

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Jo, I comprehend what you're saying. Here's a question for you: why then have the richest people in this country enjoyed tax breaks that you and I have not? On Jan 1 2006 Congress allowed two tax breaks that benefit the wealthy to become effective. The tax cuts cost approximately $27 billion, according to a study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Ironically, Republicans in Congress, only 2 weeks before the cuts took effect, voted to reduce domestic spending on programs affecting the poor and the middle class by $39 billion over the next 5 years. The Joint Committee on Taxation has estimated that these tax breaks for the wealthy will deprive the country of $197 billion in revenue. A study by the Brookings Institution determined that 97% of the tax breaks will go to those households with incomes above $200,000. And more than half of these breaks will benefit the 0.2% of families with with annual incomes exceeding $1 million. You call this fair?

Jo Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

JM - Obama wishes to raise taxes on the top earners during an economic downturn without reducing spending; he also plans to INCREASE spending, thereby increasing the debt, for benefit of the Middle Class who will see this tax cut on it's surface, but will see the tax cut leave them in the form of higher energy, food, transportation, and taxes on goods and services as well as job loss. A crystal ball to see the problems with this not necessary.
The very fact that Obama thinks that it's somehow okay to take from someone's income for personal gain of others in order to level the playing field is the reason why I will not vote for him. That thinking is not only contrary to every founding principle that this nation was fouded upon, it is a path to a form of government that is a proven failure. I'd be nice if you would put aside your insulting demoratic tone for just a minute and try to comprehend what I'm saying.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

BTW, Jo, where's your PROOF that Obama will do the things your crystal ball is telling you he'll do? McCain's already proven himself a liar, and a bad one at that. You think you can trust him to take care of you and your family? You must really like the way things are now if you think your vote for McCain will be a good thing. 90% Bush, my friend. 90% Bush.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

I need to see the big picture?? Oh that's a laugh. You who refuse to research any of McCain's shady tactics and incompetent practices, are telling ME I need to see the big picture? I consult experts and nonpartisan sources to make an educated decision, all of which I have proven, and all you can say is "Blah! You liberal Democrats just tax n' spend even tho you say it doesn't work!" I even gave you info from your Republican loving Fox News to make you happy. All I'm trying to accomplish here is to encourage you and others to look for THE TRUTH whether it coincides with your personal beliefs or not. But you won't do it, no no no. All you can do is scream LIBERAL SOCIALIST with your fingers in your ears. It's just too much to ask to expect a diehard Republican to have an open mind, let alone a mind of your own.

'superior knowledge of economics'- ROTFL! You are failing to see the 'big' picture. Obama will start off taxing xx on the rich (who already pay something like 40% of taxes). Start off with. Where will he end it? You are blinded by tax plans and healthcare plans and are not seeing Obama in the same context as I am. He is a far-left of liberal democrat. And yes, this equates to a socialist. That IS the big picture, sorry you just can't see it that way. Perhaps you are right and the government should just take care of our every need, handing us money and healthcare and we can just sit back and enjoy it all. lol Whatever. Yes, let's both look into the other's 'candidate of choice' -- I'm betting we will both be disappointed by what we really find. Cheers!

Oops my bad. This isn't smear, just more facts. We could go round and round factchecking things and at the end of the day, where will it get us? These guys are both professional pols, promises, promises everywhere. Let's see how many of them they actually keep. Vote your mind, as will I.

FWIW, I agree that McCain is dead wrong on his tactics in re to Obama/Ayres 'paling around' and implying that Obama is somehow a terrorist.

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Jo, explain, then with your superior knowledge of economics, how Obama's plan is different from the one that's in place. Apparently professional economists "choose to see it differently" too. But you're right, and they're wrong. And you haven't acknowledged my FOX NEWS source. Head NOT in sand, thank you very much. If your only comeback to my arguments is to bash The Huffington Post, I feel sorry for you. But thank you, at least for looking into factcheck.org. I'm glad to hear that McCain's not going to rape Medicare. See, you used your powers for good instead of evil. Now use those powers to look into some of these McCain issues we've discussed.

The Huffington Post? And I've got my head in the sand. lol Robin Hooding the rich to pay for those making less is wealth redistribution = socialism. You choose to see it differently; so be it. If you want to believe that McCain is Bush; so be it.

"People like you REFUSE to accept the truth and just believe what you want to believe and hear what you want to hear". Pot. Kettle. Black.

Everyone - check out John Stossel's 'Guide to Politics' on ABC. Just how much government do we really need? Good piece.

You don't like the Huffington Post? Okay, fine. Here's something from FOX NEWS 10/18/08:
Two senators in opposing political parties asked Republican presidential candidate John McCain to stop the automated phone calls that link Democratic candidate Barack Obama to a 1960s radical.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, and Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, made separate appeals to McCain on Friday.

"These kind of tactics have no place in Maine politics," Collins spokesman Kevin Kelley said. "Sen. Collins urges the McCain campaign to stop these calls immediately." The automated calls in Maine, Nevada and other states say Obama "has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home and killed Americans." The charge is misleading: The bombings, which took place more than 35 years ago, didn't result in fatalities and the group didn't claim responsibility for the attack on the judge's home.

I loved this video. Howard is right. If everyone agrees that the past eight years have been horrendous, why in the world do people want to elect McCain?

JoMama Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 07:55 AM EST

Jo, please, come on. It's not socialism. You know how when you're doing your taxes you keep hoping that your last raise hasn't bumped you up to the next tax bracket so you won't have to pay a higher percentage of taxes? That's all Obama's tax plan is. Families making more than $250,000 will pay either the same or lower tax rates than they paid in the 1990s. Obama will ask the wealthiest 2% of families to give back a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years to ensure we are restoring fairness and returning to fiscal responsibility. But no family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990s. In fact, dividend rates would be 39 percent lower than what President Bush proposed in his 2001 tax cut. source: barackobama.com
And, Jo, please don't continue bashing my sources, because it just makes you look like you want to put your head in the sand.
