Sarah Palin on 'SNL': Are your hands up?

Oct 19, 2008, 03:38 AM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: About Last Night, Current Affairs, Politics as Entertainment, Saturday Night Live, Television

Popular TV personality Sarah Palin pageant-walked onto last night's Saturday Night Live to watch Tina Fey impersonate her during a press conference and (I can't believe I'm about to type this) "raise the roof" during a "Weekend Update" rap that blatantly made fun of her. Watch the opener, below.

Palin and Fey really were the media queens this weekend -- to be clear, that's "the liberal elite media as well as the liberal regular media." You betcha! Watch more of this weekend's Palin-related funnies -- from Letterman, Bill Maher, and more -- over at Sound Bites.

Tina Fey's press conference was fantastic, as usual. Alas it was overshadowed by Sarah Palin's appearance. The replays kept going back to Palin in the wings, or Palin's Weekend Update skit (shooting the moose was pretty good), but Fey's lines (garbage truck, un-American, North Pole, etc) were great.

OBAMA 08 Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

Send Palin back to Alaska where she can fire whoever the hell she wants and take her kids on trips with taxpayers' money. But boo-hoo the RNC won't be buying her any more Neiman Marcus suits.

Selena Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

eyesopenedwide, I honestly can't figure out what your problem is. You keep espousing all this nonsense with nothing to back it up and then you try to rip me a new one every time I bring up a few facts for you. Don't dish it out if you can't take it, friend.

David Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I was glad Sara didn't do much to improve her polls except show she can smile and walk.

mk Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

mjlg: I thought it was wonderful to see Sara as just another person having fun,we need some of that in the White House

Have you really LOOKED at the Obamas? What a beautiful, close, loving family...I would be proud to have them as first family. The Palins evoke images of Billy Carter. After 8 years of Shrub, we do NOT need more of that!

Renee Pirolozzi Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Kudos to her for braving the SNL stage. This was a great PR move for Paline. She was able to show a more emotional humorous side of her personality. This a great way to outreach in these last couple weeks. She definitely has points in my book after this performance. This was awesome. I am not one to voice too much about my politics but this gives me a great excuse! There is definitely gonna be a fight after this show.

eyesopenedwide Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

WoW, your really do eat your own Selena Tool.
Since your were edifying so strongly to the masses yesterday, thought you might have a smidgen of a little tiny bit of an open mind. My mistake, your loss.

Selena Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

And just a few other things: I'm glad Palin went on SNL so people can continue to see her as the total buffoon she is. Secondly, isn't Alec Baldwin supposed to be living in some OTHER country, you know, since Bush won that election in 2000, and Baldwin kept screaming that if Bush won, he was leaving?

Selena Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

eyesopenedwide, no Selena happens to be able to think for herself and doesn't rely on Alec Baldwin to make political decisions for her. Jackass.

eyesopenedwide Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Go read the great Alec Baldwins post on Huffington yesterday about his SNL experience. I agree 1000 % with him and I'm voting for McCain/Palin.
And oh yes Selena is a HUGE tool!

JackSparrow228 Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

And do we really want a guy who was ranked 5th lowest in his Naval Academy class as President? And Palin attended five colleges in six years before finally graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987, and despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station. This is from the Anchorage Daily News.

JackSparrow228 Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Scott, I couldn't have said it better. These McCain/Palin supporters are the scariest bunch of people out there. All we can do is hope to God they're all too clueless to figure out how to get to the voting polls on Nov. 4.

Scott Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Also, why do people think it would be a good idea to have the highest offices in the nation filled with people who are "just like us". Well, let's take a look at "us" for a moment. Most people in this country are incurious, inarticulate, and not particularly well educated (an unfortunate truth). Do you want someone like that as President or Vice-President (or both)? Not me. I'd prefer our leaders to be highly educated, insightful, understanding, articulate, passionate, considerate people...not "Joe six-pack".

Scott Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

This election year, more so than any other I can recall, is really bringing the "low information voter" into shocking perspective. Look at the comments by "Merry Mix" below (assuming they're not a joke). This person appears to be siding with the McCain/Palin ticket because Palin is "darling" and "fun to watch". That's pure insanity talking. Palin herself isn't as bad as what her popularity says about the people who support her. Palin supporters are the very definition of the "low information voter". If you knew anything at all about her, and her political career and personal beliefs, you would realize that a ticket with her name on it is one that should never be voted for.

Tax Cut Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Anybody who likes Palin sure better like her a lot, cause if you vote her into office, you're going to be paying more in taxes. Check it out, I dare you!
http://taxcut.barackobama.com/?agi=87500

To Tiffani Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

Palin sure does exploit her sexuality. The mere fact that she's the VP nominee is exploiting her sexuality since she's proven time and time again that she's not equipped to hold that office. Why do you think the GOP won't give the media access to her. CAUSE SHE DON'T KNOW DIDDLY! And do you see Joe Biden WINKING at people during his speaches? It's disgusting and demeaning toward real feminists who use their skills and intellect to get a job done.

Elizabeth Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

I can't beleive the american public is eating her up like this!!

Merry Mix Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

Sarah Palin was DARLING on SNL!! She'd be a lot more fun to watch over the next 4 years than Joe Biden. This lady is going to be a major mover in our government. She's like a breath of fresh air in a stuffy room grown stale with Washington elite. Finally we have someone who is just like most of us!

Earl Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

Hey, good for everyone involved to take part in SNL. Not that it was especially funny, but its good to see Baldwin and Palin just having a bit of fun, and Tina Fey was great.
You say that Palin needed to get some good press by being on the show (the way McCain came back to make nice with Letterman), but this was still a smart move.
Still don't think she's gonna make a good V.P...not that McCain will win anyway.

Darkie Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

All white people are racist.

Tiffani Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Oh, come on. She exploits her sexuality? Are you kidding me? You mean to tell me that you can't be an attractive woman and hold high office without it being based on your sexuality? Give me a break. I swear, sometimes I wonder about the other women in this country. They want to be feminists, but by God you better hold the door for 'em too. I say, Go Sarah. I don't care if you like her politics or not, leave her boobs out of it.

mjlg Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:34 PM EST

I thought it was wonderful to see Sara as just another person having fun,we need some of that in the White House. It must have been a success considering the ratings for that night. I thought it was great

Burbank Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

They got Alec Baldwin to participate by letting him call Sarah Palin a "horrific woman" to her face. Something I'm sure he's been dreaming about for quite a few weeks now...

Craig Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

She didn't even do anything! Tina, as always, was hilarious. But my question is this: how in the world did they get Alec Baldwin to participate in the intro?

Michele Donato Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

Sarah Palin is an embarassment to the role of women in politics. She exploits her sexuality and the American people at the same time. It is most unfortunate that our political evolution has sunk so low as to allow such a biased, uninformed and racist person to run as vice president.

LisaMama Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

She did just fine, and followed the politician rule of letting the SNL cast be funny while she stays politically correct. Still not voting for McCain-Palin, though.

Mark Wahlberg Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

Hysterical. Palin sits there with a smile (and a deer in headlight look) as Tina Fey and the rest of the SNL case rip her a new one.

Mark Wahlberg Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Hysterical. Palin sits there with a smile (and a deer in headlight look) as Tina Fey and the rest of the SNL case rip her a new one.

nunnya Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

All that and a bag of chips! Go SARACUDA!

James Lehan Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

She should have been in porn and she would have gotten more influence maybe even my vote.

Selena Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Right on, NotBetty!
Shannon S.: Come on. You're talking like all the dirty unethical stuff McCain is pulling is a-okay with you and doesn't insult your intelligence. And you blame everything McCain is doing on his advisors? It's not like they're putting a gun to his head forcing him to constantly take the low road. Let's not forget, this is a man who, when his first wife was disfigured in a car accident, cheated on her several times, then divorced her. Great moral character here. And guess what. When he finally keels over because the Presidency is demanding too much of him and keeps him up past his bedtime once too often, you're gonna be stuck with Caribou Barbie for President. If that doesn't scare the hell out of you, nothing will.

NotBetty Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

To Rev.Wright - Turn that mirror on yourself. Your hatred of women is showing. Women are not hens, we don't care what she looks like and we most certainly don't hate babies. What we oppose is a woman whose policies are anti-woman, a woman who lies continuously and blatantly about her record, a woman whose intellectual capacity is on par with a rock, a woman who cannot even name a newspaper she might have seen much less read, a woman who used her office as a bludgeon against those who had crossed her. She is no more worthy of high office than a parrot.

robred Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

So who's the bigger whore here--Lorne Michaels or Sarah Palin? SNL has made it very clear that this woman has no place being Vice-President, let alone President. Palin has made it very clear the contempt she has for the so-called media elite of which SNL is a prime example. Yet both will compromise all they believe in the attempt for higher ratings and to save a floundering campaign, respectively. The whole thing was nauseating and Michaels appears to have forced a reluctant Tina Fey into participating--how he got Alec Baldwin to join in is anyone's guess. Since he was the one holding all of the cards, I think Lorne Michaels wins biggest whore by a landslide.

emily Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

agree!

Rev. Wright Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

Some of you hens need to take a long HONEST look at the root of your hatred. It is beyond all reason. If she were homely, and had aborted her youngest, she'd be in like Flynn with you she woman baby haters.

Shannon S. Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

...I guess I'm just over this whole campaign and how angry it's made everyone. You're getting worked up and berating people in a EW talkback...then criticizing McCain for attacking Obama.

Jamaal Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

Wow what is wrong with some of the posters on here? Sarah Palin was good on SNL, and even got down with Amy P's rap, so she seems pretty cool even to me. That bit with Alec Baldwin was funny too with the mistaken identity. The first black President Bill Clinton thinks their story is a good one, the moose hunting, the dog racing & being a woman Governor in Alaska. Disagree with someone without being a petty fool. Your views on things change when you run your own biz, like mine have and have to pay all sorts of taxes you learn quickly and grow up, so lash out at injustice and corruption but Sarah Palin on SNL isn't one of them. There is a book out there called "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder" , quit proving that to be true!

Shannon S. Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

wow...ANGER, ANGER, ANGER!!! Relax! If you'd read my posts you'd see that I'M VOTING FOR OBAMA; so calm down, I'm not the enemy. I'm simply pointing out that John McCain is a better alternative than what we've had over the last 8 years. Do I agree with his healthcare policy? No. Do I think he's running a dirty smear campaign bringing up Ayers all the time. YES. But keep in mind that McCain is doing what his advisors are recommending to him. They know he's losing, so they're recommending he goes on the attack. George W. Bush did the same thing to McCain in the 2000 Republican primaries...AND IT WORKED.

Selena Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Shannon S.: Doesn't it bother you the least bit that McCain was going around insinuating that Obama's secretly a terrorist based on his middle name and this Ayers nonsense when McCain is STILL a supporter of G. Gordon Liddy? Don't you think there's a very frightening reason why McCain's campaign is fraught with outright lies and deception based on people's fears and bigotry? And this whole Joe the Plumber business. You really don't think he was a poorly background researched plant by the GOP? The man used to live in Arizona, for crying out loud. And the Palin thing, trying to woo Hillary supporters with this sorry excuse for a human being? And I very much take issue with your statement that McCain has the country's best interests in mind. He has HIS PARTY'S best interests in mind. You like the idea of him taxing your healthcare benefits? How does that serve your best interests???

Shannon S. Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

to Selena:
I have to say I agree with Jaded; and I think you're being a little harsh. This country is in serious trouble...but we're in an election where both candidates are very competent men with our country's best interests in mind. They might disagree in a lot of policies, but they both have good intentions. This isn't George Bush we're talking about anymore. I'm voting for Obama, but I'm not gonna be heartbroken if he loses. McCain is a good politician, and we could do MUCH worse.

SarahIsADitz Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

They should have done a hunting sketch and had a Dick Cheney look-alike shoot her in the face. THAT would have been funny!!!!!!!!!!!

Selena Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Jaded, get a clue and read the newspaper for once. If you did, you'd be a teeny bit upset too. Cause in case you haven't notice, our country is ALREADY in serious trouble.

Shannon S. Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

To ItsAllGood:
I had the same thing happen in my neighborhood...but it was to someone who had a Obama/Biden sign in her yard. They actually LIT THE SIGN ON FIRE and keyed her car. I live in a mostly Republican area, and I can guarantee you, after that, I won't be putting any sign in my yard. I guess the point is that depending on where you are in this country, there's always going to be idiots who think that type of behavior is acceptable.

Raven_Moon Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Tina & Amy were hilarious! I still don't like Palin, though.

Ziggy Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Guess what, It'sAllGood. I had my Obama sign stolen right off my front lawn, so don't go on about how angelic McCain supporters are. I fear for our country if he gets elected because of his nutjob followers. Let's not forget the freaks that show up at McCain rallies shouting for Obama's death. Now THAT'S scary.

bri-dizzle Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Y'all sound so ANGRY!! I don't think I want my country run by people who are so vicious, making derisive remarks that sound personal and really have nothing to do with her political experience. If YOU are the people who are voting for Obama I'm scared for America. My friend had a small pink McCain/Palin bumper sticker stolen off her car at her lawfirm. Another had her lawn signed defaced. C'mon, give it a rest. Let brotherly love continue...

Jaded, props to you. People are so freakin SERIOUS. It was a comedy show folks, not the election.

Ishtar Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

gthomas, you're right, Gov. Palin DOES have some great experience. She's GREAT at slaughtering cow moose. Let's see, she's ALSO great at abusing her political power to get people she doesn't like fired. Let's not forget about her impressive experience at competing in beauty pageants. And her foreign affairs experience can't be beat, since ya know, she can see Russia from her house! She's just swell, doncha know.

gthomas Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

I am surprised at how many comments criticize Gov Palin for being inexperienced, while most of you critics will vote for Obama, who has NO executive experience. And the anger and bitterness...where's the love, people?! Anyhow, I thought she did a good job. She was certainly a good sport in a hostile environment...

Selena Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Um, Jaded, you want to stand behind a leader who is racist, a liar, an incompetent, has absolutely no respect for the American people and is a total tool of Big Oil Companies? Sorry, but I don't, that's why I'm voting for Obama.

Ziggy Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Hey Jaded! If we're supposed to keep this message board about the performance and not politics, how come you just typed out a big ol' paragraph about.... POLITICS????

Kelsy Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

The Palin thing is (over)done. Tina Fey is great but she has performed it too many times. And shame on the show for having that horrible woman on.

Jaded Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

You all need to go home, get drunk, and make sweet sweet love to your significant other. Jesus, this is an entertainment blog. Everyone is so freaking uptight. We should be talking about what we thought about the performance and not our political thoughts. I can not wait for this election (like the one 4 years ago) to be over. We should be happy that we have the privilege of voting. If my candidate does not win I am not going to be a sore loser. I am not going to talk badly about the one that gets voted in. I think running for president is a very scary thing and I personally think that all candidates have balls to do so. Our country is split down the middle, red and blue, so no matter what the outcome is half of this country is not going to be happy. It's like the Super Bowl. Wah wah wah my team did not win. Our country is going to be in bad shape if this keeps happening. I love this country and I just wish we could all stand behind our leader, no matter who it is.

sher Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

What performance? She mostly sat there bumping around to the music. Much ado 'bout nothin'..

susan Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

I found the real Sarah Palin to be a bit of a bore. Tina Fey is better as her.

emily Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

sorry. i guess i suck.

sher Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

What performance. She didn't do much of anything!...

To emily Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Uhhhhh, if politics has nothing to do with Palin's appearance on SNL, then why would Palin be on SNL in the first place? "Forget about the election for a minute"??!!?? The election's the whole point, sweetie! Mark my words, once this election's over and Palin's forced to go back to Alaska, she ain't gonna be on ANY show ANYWHERE.

JeriKratzhole Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Let's also start doing skits about Palin's secessionist over-meddling husband who was totally in on the corruption of his wife's office, trying to get the brother-in-law fired over not having a license to kill a moose that the Palins helped eat! OMG, Palin just makes me want to vomit every time I see her dim-witted face and hear that meeemie meeemie backwater voice of hers. But the more Tina Fey makes a big joke of her, the more it warms my heart.

Kelvin Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Hey Sandra - Have you checked out Palin's church? It is hateful and divisive. And can we talk about her approval and support of the AIP - not to mention her husband's membership in it for so many years? That is about as un-American as it gets... but that doesn't count, right?

emily Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

i thought palin was great. politics has NOTHING to do with her performance! we don't need everyone's comments about who they're voting for or who they like or dislike. the whole point of entertainment is to get away from the outside world for awhile. so stop concentrating on the election for just a minute and get past insulting others for their political views. (i cannot wait for this election to be done with.)

Tracey Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

In the meantime, this phony, lying hypocrite from Alaska is still not scheduled for any actual press conferences. How the press - liberal or otherwise - is allowing this and really saying very little is astounding.

Elly Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

To DanOregon - She is a prop.

To Molly Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

You're a moron.

DanOregon Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

You'd think they would have had her do something, you know, funny. Mark Walberg was funnier, Barack Obama was funnier, Janet Reno was funnier. Instead she looked like a prop. Would have been better if she aired a fake PSA for Celebrities Responding to Unflattering Depictions. With appearances by Walberg, Suze Orman, and Chris Matthews. Would have killed.

eric Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

This woman makes me ashamed to call myself American.

sf guy Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

To all the people who are in a huff about Palin's appearance, lighten up. It's just SNL, a show that will go back to being unfunny after the elections are over. Nothing is ever good enough for you guys.

Molly Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Tina Fey and SNL were complete sell-outs in working with Palin. They've managed to help the McCain and Palin get some more votes by painting Sarah Palin as cute, fuzzy, cuddly and "funny" to the American folks. Was Joe the Plumber tuning in to this? Don't buy it just because she was on SNL, people. She had her agenda and SNL and Tina Fey (who I once respected) happily helped her along. Use your brains instead of drooling over her "performance". She's a beauty queen, remember. She knows how to work a crowd of morons. Don't be a moron.

Kim Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Good for her. I don't care for her policies, but you have to give the woman more credit than some are giving her -- she was TOTALLY "in on" the joke. And I have no idea why anyone would criticize her for doing something so trivial at this stage of the campaign -- it's actually a pretty standard stop late on the campaign trail (this or one of the other comedy shows).

I don't want to watch her in the White House, but I sure had fun watching her on TV.

Palin's visit to SNL is nothing more than a calculated attempt by her campaign advisors to misdirect the attention placed on her candidacy. Typical.

She was an excellent sport, and she was funny. Tina Fey does a great job with the impersonation, and it's great that Governor Palin can take a joke so gracefully. I love her, and even though they make fun of her for it, it's nice to see a politician with a good, honest personality.

I thought she did such a good job! Gooooo Sarah!!!!!

The bits were great but no thanks to Palin herself! Amy and Tina (plus Alec Baldwin) hit phenomenal comic notes, but Sarah was just the straight man. Props to her for being a good sport - but do you think she even understood they were SLAMMING her views the entire time? The joke was definitely on Palin, as it should be. She's a far right fringer in a smiling, winking package.

Go Sa-rah Go Sa-rah, she killed it. Her critics can't ever admit she was great.
She has so much personality and charisma that she overpowers the Obama adulation of his followers.
I have never voted Republican, but she has my vote.

I think a funnier opening sketch would have been a play on the old TV show, "To Tell The Truth" Wouldn't been a hoot to have Sara and Tina both declare they are Sarah Palin, and the Panel could be made up of McCain, Obama, Clinton and Bush, with the kicker being nobody selects the correct Palin, even McCain. that would have been hilarious

I don't care what anyone thinks, Tina Fey as Palin is the funniest bit on SNL in the past 10yrs. The real Palin's performance wasn't bad either- it didn't hurt or help her in any way, but it did prove that Tina's impersonation isn't in vain. Way to go Palin- very few politicians can take a joke for what it is, a joke.

What was the point of her going on SNL, anyway?

Shannon S. Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

I just submitted a request to EW to have "God's" comment removed; so hopefully they'll act swiftly. There's no place for that here. People that ignorant shouldn't even be allowed to vote.

Loved the whole rap. Amy Poehler was on the money--I had belly laughs when she popped a cap at the moose. Get the racists off of the comment page. Come on this is an entertainment blog.

John K Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

The real story was not how Palin showed up, but how funny Amy Poehler was. Her rap really knocked me out. On another subject, the racist comment is evidence that no one who wants Obama elected should ignore. Don't rest now. The Bradley effect is more powerful then you might think. Go and vote and tell all your friends and relatives to vote. We can't let Mccain Palin win. Remember, if Mccain takes a turn for the worce--Palin will be our next Prez--scary huh?
