What's on your Must List?

Oct 8, 2008, 07:00 AM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: Must List

While Tina Fey's Joe-Six-Pack-loving Sarah Palin has been garnering a Bering Sea-sized wave of attention (we're guilty too!), I think it's time to pledge our allegiance to last weekend's other impeccable SNL impersonation: Andy Samberg's "Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals" (watch it below). I'll admit the sketch's concept isn't super fresh (my mom's been talking to her animals for years), but Samberg's impersonation of the Boston boy is SPOT ON, down to the "Say 'hi' to your mother for me, okay?"

I hope Samberg can find time in between producing increasingly questionable digital shorts ("Space Olympics"? Wha?) to make his Mark Wahlberg bit a semi-regular thing. I've even got a few suggestions. How about teaming up with New Kids on the Block bro Donnie Wahlberg for a talk show spot a la "The Barry Gibb Talk Show" (singing and dancing included, natch)?  Or how about a Funky Bunch reunion? Do I smell ''Even Better Vibrations"?

That's what's got me hot and bothered this week. Now it's your turn. Which movies, TV shows, music, books, websites, or games are on your Must List? Please include your email address, in case we elect to use your suggestion in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, October 9, at 3 p.m. ET.

And be sure to check out all of our recent Must List picks.

how bout a certain QUEEN OF POP's concert at MSG?

The return of South Park is definately something that should be mentioned. "The China Probrem" was disturbing and at the same time honest, and therefore an eye-opener. Summer blockbuster movies will take a long time to recover from the disaster that "Indiana Jones 4" was, plot-wise. So, will the fans. Maybe "Crytsal Skull" really nuked the fridge and the end of summer blockbuster franchise is pretty near, maybe it's even already there.

CRAWFORD - It's available to watch for free on Hulu.com, and in a year chock full of political documentaries, this one seems to take the personal and make it universal as the varied residents of a small Texas town deal with the fallout caused when Bush buys a house down the street just prior to being elected, and all that the following 8 years brings. The film is unobtrusive and lets all sides have their say, sadly at the end of it all there are no winners.

Supernatural season 4 has been amazing this season. I love where they have taken the story with the Angels. It just keeps out doing itself with each new episode!

MLS Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 06:34 AM EST

The Pretenders "Break Up the Concrete"
Chrissie Hynde keeps on rockin' magnificently, reinvigorated by a new backing band, yet retaining the good old fun in the sound.

Josh Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 04:14 AM EST

YouTube- Alice
A truly amazing song that you can't seem to get out of your head, plus it's not bad to look at either.

The Foot Fist Way on DVD
Danny McBride is absolutely hilarious and this movie is like combining Karate Kid with The Office. Plus with a hero turned antagonist named Chuck "The Truck" you can't help but love this movie.

Life on NBC- It has been such a long time since last we saw Charlie Crews I had forgotten why I loved the show so much. But from the time Damien Lewis cracked that Zen grin of his I fell in love with this show again.

Erin Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

PUSHING DAISIES - It's the most original and vibrant show on television. Half romantic comedy, half crime drama and a splash of quirky fantasy thrown in the mix makes it a must watch. Also there isn't a sexier couple on TV than the pie maker and the girl named Chuck who can never touch. Love it and it needs to last!

Judy Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

These guys need more exposure! I didn’t even know who they were until about a month ago, but I have never wanted to make a Must List suggestion more than when I saw The Allen and Craig Show: Episode 9. Allen the douchebag + Craig the sweet innocent guy = pure gold.

The new single from the Twilight soundtrack, "Decode" by Paramore, has been playing almost non-stop on my iPod this week. I love how if you know Edward and Bella's relationship, the lyrics make complete sense. But if you didn't know it, the song could be about any couple. That and I just love the beat of the song...it's so catchy.

Also, the episode of The Big Bang Theory this week was probably the best episode of the series. Seeing Sheldon inadvertently hit on a gay scientist, and successfully get his number?! The funniest thing I've seen in a sitcom in a long time.

And I can't forget about Iron Man on DVD. My roommate and I watched it twice in one night, even though we had both seen it in theaters 3 times each. Robert Downey Jr. kicks so much ass and looks so hot while doing it, I had to check to see that my heart was still beating after all of that.

I see a few Supernatural Season 4 mentions, and I'm just here to say YES!!! Misha Collins is one badass angel.

Laura Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

The soundtrack to Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. It makes me want to walk around NYC all night.

Mikey SF Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

Lady GaGa - The Hills, Dirty Sexy Money, and Gossip Girl has featured her music and there's a good reason: she literally wants you to Just Dance!
Lucy Liu - Ever since Ally McBeal, this lady keeps getting hotter and hotter! Her presence in Dirty Sexy Money makes the show more steamier than ever!
Gossip Girl - You know you love it or secretly love it. XoXo Addicted Fan

Osama bin fishin' Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

The Samberg/Wahlberg sketch was funnier than hell, I had to put on my facebook page for repeated viewing.
also:
CD - The Clash Live at Shea Stadium - awesome!

Summer Glau - She's the kind of Terminator you'd like to take home to meet mom.

Cami Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Supernatural Season 4 is a must right now. Misha Collins as Castiel is a fantastic addition to the cast!

Kat Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Iron Man - first MUST buy movie on disc in a long time. Just wish it had followed the trend of other recently released movies and included the free download version.

Marissa Forbes Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Planet of the Apps! Including Naked Faces (art & inspiration), Block Breaker Deluxe from Gameloft, Chimps Ahoy and Kaleido!!

Kat Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

The Big Bang Theory - hilarious, spent the entire episode laughing this week

Raven_Moon Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Movie: Sleeping Beauty (Takes me back.)
TV: How I Met Your Mother (Always awesome!)
Music: Nightmare Revisited (Especially "Sally's Song" sung by Amy Lee)

HIMYM has always been amazing but this season it has been extra super amazing... it is for sure on my must list

-Rachel Getting Married AND Anne Hathaway as guest host on SNL (I'm even more impressed w/her after seeing how versatile & solid of an actor she is...so great)
-Tina Fey as Sarah Palin (I don't agree w/the unbalanced mockery of the political parties on SNL but it is undeniable to watch Tina in action...uncanny)
-The Office (I can't get enough & neither can my friends...looking for "that's what she said" moments has become apart of pop culture)
-Estelle & Kings of Leon

Heather Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Misha Collins in Supernatural. Only the best angel/tax-accountant ever to grace the screen and who had the best entrance of a character in recent memeory. Also, he's really hot.

peaches Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

"Acid Tongue" By Jenny Lewis is a sharply, written sublime rock masterpiece. Lewis channels Rondstat, the Eagles, and classic country while remaining a true iconic original!

Maureen Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Seeing my favorite drama queens from daytime (like Eden Riegel) and primetime (like Jessalyn Gilsig) be as funny, sexy and potty-mouthed as they want to be in the web series "Imaginary B1tches."

The documentary Religious is a fantastic and irreverant look at organized religion with the always reliable Bill Maher. God, this movie is funny.

Daniel Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

-- "The Simpsons": The Complete 11th Season on DVD - This is the season of "Save me, Jeebus!" An iconic "Simpsons" phrase if ever I heard one.
-- "Robot Chicken" Season 3 on DVD - You gotta give it up for Seth Green, truly the coolest (and most hardworking) nerd of our generation.
-- "Sleeping Beauty" on Blu-Ray/DVD combo - starting this week with the Disney classic, the Mouse House will release all their major discs in this double- (and sometimes triple-) disc package, so for those at home who haven't yet upgraded to Blu-Ray hi-def, but intend to soon, they can get both versions of the movie for the same (relatively) low price.

Carrie H. Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Supernatural has been terrific in its 4th season. The addition of Castiel the angel and the God storyline is mysterious and menacing rather than hokey. But most of all, Jensen Ackles makes the show- his scenes with his teenage mother last week just killed.

DL Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

I think it's time for The Daily Show and Colbert to get on the list- their level of quality the past few weeks has been astonishing and it will keep on going through the election.

Others worthy:
The Big Bang Theory
How I Met Your Mother (2 CBS comedies? What is this world coming to?)
Chuck

Shannon Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Definitely Jason Segal on HIMYM. He is fantastic!

Elizabeth Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

"The Wordy Shipmates" by Sarah Vowell... I heart her and her books!

My must of the week: Caught Running, by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Roux. And Regina, "natch" has been around since long before EW published its first issue. I first read it in a Trixie Belden, of all things. The writer isn't trying to make it happen; you just haven't heard it before.

Laura M. Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Yeah, Samberg's Mark Wahlberg skit was definitely hilarious, but let's not also forget Anne Hathaway as Julie Andrews in the hilarious Mary Poppins skit. Anne's impression was spot on!

Rachel K Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

The music during Life. I'm always impressed by the material they choose because it makes the show more edgy and interesting.

NineDaves Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

1. The return of Degrassi: The Next Generation on The N! Degrassi does what Gossip Girl, 90210, and Privileged can't: shows compelling stories with relatable teens in a honest matter while still being incredibly entertaining.

2. 13 the musical on broadway. a powerful score, a hysterical book, and a captivating cast make this one of the best shows on broadway.

3. The View. Say what you will, but those 5 ladies are having more interesting, passionate, and smart political conversations than any of the big cable network shows out there.

Dennis N. Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I can't stop laughing at this literal interpretation of A-Ha's "Take on Me": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HE9OQ4FnkQ
Not only does it clear up SO much confusion surrounding this landmark video, but it reminds us all of what viral video is supposed to be: intelligently ridiculous and technically impressive.

Anne Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

I am with whoever suggested Marshall's anti-NYC rant on How I Met Your Mother this weekend. I can't even tell you how much I laughed.
Signed,
Another Midwesterner who doesn't get what is so great about NYC

alexandra Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

i'm glad others found it funny - i kept telling my friend, 'as long as you don't look at samberg, his impersonation is dead on walhberg' - it was effin hilarious. the skit itself was pointless (although funny), but the potential for some hilarious skits are there. it's not often actors get the various boston accents right so when they do, i'm thrilled.

Allison Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

I am so glad someone else thought the Mark Wahlberg bit was hysterical. My fiancee thought I was insane for laughing so hard tears started streaming down my face!! It had nothing to do with the skit itself- everything to do with Andy Samberg's impersonation.

Dan Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman - as well as the reading tour he's doing, a chapter a city, all captured on video and posted on his website. In his words, by the time the tour is over, you'll be able to see him read his entire book for free. And he SO good at reading it... I saw him live on day 1 in NYC...

KateDFW Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

The Big Bang Theory. I have only seen two episodes of the show but got so hooked on Sheldon, I had to go buy Season 1 yesterday. Guess I know what I am doing this weekend!

C St Cross Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Fringe is a weekly Must in our household. After that truly awful X-Files movie, in which I wanted to believe so much but was stunningly disappointed, it's a true delight to get my self-respecting Geek back on with a show that gives me the same delicious chills as the original X-Files TV Show.

The TV show "Life" is on my must list. Damian Lewis is wonderful, and the writing is great.

Jason Segal as Marshall on "How I Met Your Mother." His rant this week about how much he hated New York ("I'm like a huge monster that came out of the ocean to destory bodegas") and loved New Jersey (the shirts with a beagle and Boston terrier at PriceCo were priceless). The show used to be all about how amazing Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan were, but you sometimes forget how often Jason Segal comes in to steal the whole show. Brilliant.

Jul Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

HBO announced that they renewed Entourage for another, its sixth, season. Yes! Now, the only thing I can hope for is that the current season gets better.

Sandy Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

I agree Amy, Andy Samberg doing Mark Walberg was classic. But Tina Fey deserves to be on the must list first. She's made SNL a must watch show again.

Regina Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

EW, stop trying to make "natch" happen. It's not going to happen.
