The TV shows and movies that make you wish you were young (again)

Infiniteplaylist_l Maybe you wouldn't go back to high school, but I'm guessing some movie or TV show has made you wish you were 18 again, if only for a second. So which one is it, and why?

The thought definitely crossed my mind during Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (pictured), thanks to the always-charming Michael Cera, and the fact that Nick's gay pals would have loved me.

I wonder if, given the opportunity when I was that age, I would've crushed on Cera instead of Keanu Reeves (Speed) and Brad Pitt (Legends of the Fall)...

Your turn.

Boy Meets World takes me back to my grade school days because I watched it alot. What really makes me long for my high school years is music from the 1999-2004 time period. What an odd period for music and an equally odd time period to come of age in.

Basaxl Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

I am 60 years old.The only way you could force me to go back to my teens is to gaurantee I'd know then what I know now,and I'd get to pick the class mates in all my classes.Johnny Depp,Viggo Mortensen,Hugh Jackman,Russell Crowe,Peter Wingfield the Lord of the Rings cast, Whoopi Goldberg, and Criss Angel will do for starters.Otherwise"it aint happening"!!!

i wouldn't say i'd want to be in high school again, but sometimes i wish i were in gossip girl so i could cheer Chuck up--boy is he a sad sap. lol also, i probably would've endured high school just to hang out with veronica mars. oh and when i watch Greek, I wish i were at their college.

Sandy Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

I recently saw "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and watching it made me wish I had taken more time to actually have fun in high school, do some crazy things. Granted, I don't know many people who'd join a parade in progress and jump on a random float for fun, but I could have loosened up more during those years than I did. "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Dan Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- brings back memories of late nights in Graveyards with friends, hanging out at the local watering-hole, and, well, you know, killing vampires.

C St Cross Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Mallrats. I didn't see it until well into my late 20s, and wished heartily I hadn't waited so long.

KLF Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

None! You couldn't pay me to go back and relive those years! But I do admit to Dazed and Confused as being the movie and soundtrack of my life. I was in HS in Texas in the 70's and I can tell you that movie perfectly showcases my generations school years. From cruising the "drag", looking for a party and having your best friend pull up your jeans zipper with a pair of plyers, this movie has it all!

Movies:
Cant Hardly Wait
She's All That
The Breakfast Club

TV:
The O.C. - I was already in college when I got hooked!
Dawson's Creek - memories of high school

Sixteen Candles came out when I was 16 and feeling awkward. I totally wish I could go through those years again anyway; something about being naive to the ways of the real world appeals to me.

LK Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

When I was 18 "Garden State" made me wish I was 4 years older and living on my own already. Now that it's 4 years later thanks to "Nick & Norah's..." I really want to relive the past 4 years of my life (aka college)

Vicki Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 03:26 AM EST

Dazed and Confused, hands down, always makes me nostalgic for those days of high school high jinx. So much fun.

When I was younger I had a thing for the guy that played Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez (Benny) in the Sandlot. Also Val Kilmer as Madmartigan in Willow. Both we so bad***!

Dixie Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

Dazed and Confused and Fast Times At Ridgemont High make me wish I'd been a teenager in the late 70s/early 80s. I wouldn't want to be a teenager now for anything! High school in the late 90s was bad enough.

Karrah Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

I'm in college, but I already miss high school. Say Anything makes me nostalgic for the time right after graduation before I moved on to the next phase of my life. I watched shows like The OC while I was in high school, and it's so weird to think that I'm older than those characters now.

I totally related to Swingers when it came out-I was that age, going through a break-up, going out etc and when I watch it now it makes me nostalgic, but just for a second.

Vivi Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Degrassi: The Next Generation for sure. I mean, I would so own that school with my charm and sarcasm if I was younger.

Trace Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

The Wonder Years is the only acceptable answer.

Julia Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

Before Sunrise reminds me of traveling in college and the possiblity of romance with a cute stranger. My first glass of wine on a study abroad in Rome? Never been better.

Em Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

Dazed and Confused. I always get depressed after watching it bc it makes me realize my keg party days are over.

Sina Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Veronica Mars and especially Clueless. Clueless came out my Junior year of h.s and everyone in my school was eating rice cakes and wearing short skirts with those knee high tights.

Ninedaves, as a girl who moved to Indiana as an 11 year old, I would LOVE to see that play! I didn't move from NYC, but still, from a midwestern city to the Indiana countryside. Culture. Shock. I may have to get the soundtrack. I hope this play becomes a huge hit and tours. Nothing makes me want to go back to high school, though. Overall, I had a great time, but I wouldn't want to go back for anything.

Jackie Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

The Breakfast Club. Although I was born around the time the film came out, when I see it now I get nostalgic and wish I could re-do high school. I would want to break free of the labels, much like Judd, Molly, and the gang did.

Jessie Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Can't Hardly Wait - that movie just makes me feel like anything's possible. Also Friday Night Lights. And while I'm not too much older than the characters they portray (I'm almost 22), my college career is coming to and end and I keep wondering "Where did high school go? Did I make the right choices when I lived it?"

Jen Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

My So-Called Life. I wanted to redo high school and take more risks. I wanted to go out with Jordan and have fun with Ray Anne and Ricky. http://popculturecurmudgeon.blogspot.com

Nee Nee Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

To start, I'm not that old...yet. Although the fact that I just said that probably makes me old. But I am still in my 20's, so I consider that relatively young. Anyway, Greek makes me want to go back and do college all over again; except this time I would try to enjoy it. When WE was playing Felicity, I watched it religiously, and it had the same effect on me.

MSF Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

The Twilight series... but only if I could be a teenager in Forks and meet the Cullens!

SavanaH Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Dazed and Confused for sure

Rob Grizzly Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Cartoons.
Whenever I hear about a cool new cartoon show or CGI movie, I wish it wouldn't be so bad that I watch them at this age.

NineDaves Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

i could write a book on the tv shows and movies that make me want to be a kid again. but to offer something different to the table, i'm going to throw in a musical and a book series.

i recently saw the new broadway musical 13. (no, it's not based on the movie.) it's about a 13 year old kid who gets moved from new york city to indiana when his parents divorce, and is faced with the social struggles of starting over in a new school. i left the theater wanting to high five someone, singing the score in my head and wishing i could go back to that point in my life with what i know now and make better choices.

on a more girlier front, has anyone ever read the clique novels? well, if you haven't, you are totally missing out. it's like the book version of mean girls - all about a bunch of junior high girls who are constantly holding on to their alpha status in the war against become a LBR (that'd be "loser beyond repair"). they're super fun!

yes, i'm 27 years old.

Catherine Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

I used to work in a videostore with my best friend (she still is today!) that I am reminded of everytime I watch Empire Records. We had the best of time and I just wish we had our very own Lucas and Marc!!! Damn the man, save the Empire!

snarky Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I second the "clueless" love. I also wished I was a teenager while watching "The O.C." and recently, "Gosspi Girl" - but only if I got to hang out with the Ryan and the b*tches on GG.

Rebecca Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Maybe its just me...but i don't a) watch a lot of television and b) haven't seen a show that makes me wish i was younger/ back in HS...granted im 24 and a new mommy....but i dont think that anything could make me wish to go back to a time when things were of a micro-cosim and what you wore/ did was judged by your peers un fairly. The only thing I wish I could do back in HS is go back to class and take full advantage of a free education and actually listen to the wisdom and counsel of my teachers and other staff of my old school.

Rachel K Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Dazed and Confused does it for me. I wasn't even a thought in my parents minds in the 70s when the movie takes place, but something about that last day of school - big party - becoming a senior - etc...its just awesome!

Matt Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

Dazed and confused brings me back to the day :)

Carine Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Though not really High school, Greek does this for me. It's close enough to high school and it's all the fun parts without the draw backs.

Paul R Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

"Almost Famous" made me wish I was back to my teen years in the '70's. If I had it to do all over again, I'd drop out of school and go on the road with a rock band.

Dennis N. Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

I don't know if watching Mean Girls necessarily made me yearn for pre-pubescence, but I certainly wished I attended that high school.

Alli Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Freaks and Geeks always makes me nostalgic...I can't help but wish I'd known a guy like Nick Andopolis (but then I realize that I probably did and, like Lindsay, I just didn't notice him in "that way").

marilinda Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

wanting to be young again is an everyday wish for me at times... to relate with characters in this movie, juno or degrassi: tng. to be able to shop in a hot topic without saying it's for my niece. and being able to like my chemical romance and not be pushing 32.

GeeMoney Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

Every time I catch "Clueless" on TV, I automatically wish I was back in high school, wearing my knee-high socks/stockings and using the phrase "As if!" like it never went out of style.... I miss those years, but at the same time, I'm glad that they are behind me!
