Jeff Probst blogs 'Survivor: Gabon' (episode 4)

Oct 10, 2008, 08:54 AM | by Jeff Probst

Categories: 'Survivor', Reality TV, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Survivorgabon_l Ah...unscripted reality.  You just can’t write this stuff. I think the idea of having them rank themselves in order of importance was one of more inspired “switch” ideas of late. You can thank Dan Munday for that one.  Been with our show since season two and he’s brilliant. They simply didn’t see the switch coming and as you know that pleases me to no end when we pull one over on them.

Dumbest move: What blew me away was the fact that Bob was picked so late in the process.  Somebody is gonna pay for that one. Trust me, had you been standing in my shoes you would have been just as shocked. Bob is a worker and a competitor. To leave him up there that long tells me these guys are vulnerable for a smart player to wreak havoc on this game. That was a mistake. They’re under estimating him and that means they’re not paying attention.

Best move: Kenny choosing Kelly. Kenny is playing to WIN. He’s taking chances. Kelly seemed like a ridiculous choice and Kenny played it as such saying he chose her because “she’s hot.” Lie. He chose her because he sensed a lost puppy in need of a home and he believed he could use her vote to further his own game. Video gamers all over the world must be loving skinny little Kenny with the creepy long fingernails. Another one to watch out for down the stretch.

Favorite move: Ace ended up on one of the worst tribes ever – Fang. It’s perfect. I can’t wait to hear him wax on about all the problems on this tribe.

Corrine is growing on me. Just sayin.

Ah, Matty swearing on his girlfriend. Will this come back to bite him in the butt?  Not sure I’d trust Ace.  Check that, I’m sure I wouldn’t trust Ace. I don’t think Ace trusts Ace. Matty is vulnerable. He plays this game too honestly to have much of a shot at winning.

The immunity challenge: I’m so done with Fang right now. It had to suck major big time to have Randy dominate them the way he did. Ace got used, but in his defense, Ace had absolutely no help from anybody. I don’t think Crystal ever moved from her corner. It’s amazing to watch. No matter who goes over to the Fang tribe, they suddenly suck.

When it came time for tribal council, Jacquie was simply a victim of bad luck.  She had all her eggs in one basket with Marcus and thanks to Dan Munday, her game was shot.  Again, just being candid, as nice as Jacquie is (and she is extremely pleasant) she didn’t bring as much to the show from a character point of view….Why is it the attractive blonde women on our show are often the least interesting in reality? Jacquie was all about winning and she would have had a very good shot had she lasted a bit longer but we also need to entertain the audience and that wasn’t Jacquie’s strong suit.  So, if you have to lose someone, I guess Jacquie isn’t a bad person to lose.  Just being honest, better her than Randy or Ace.  Add Jacquie to the list of people who will not want to talk to me at the live show.

Okay. That’s all I have.  For all you critics just remember, you don’t pay anything for these blogs. I’m not a magazine writer. I’m just a simple little reality host trying to make his way in the world. Dalton asked me to write these blogs, “without thinking.”  Those were his exact words. He wanted an unedited account of what I remember about the episode.  So, that’s what you’re getting.  I’m not going back and rewriting or even checking the spelling. This is a blog and this one is finished.  See ya next week!

Now check out our exclusive deleted scene from 'Survivor' and then read Dalton's recap.

Damn, that's another fan gone. Yup, you've read my words, Jacquie is a fan.

BJ Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:20 AM EST

"Why is it the attractive blonde women on our show are often the least interesting in reality? "

I can't believe you said that Jeff. But then again since you are a man, and a handsome man at that, it explains the truly ignorant question.

Pretty people mostly are rude, inconsiderate and especially in women (and I am a woman), uninteresting. They live their lives in front of the mirror, they live their lives for the mirror. Their interests in life are how many pounds they can lose this wk, or what new hairstyles and shoes they can grab, or the new beau of the moment.

Anyone of average looks (or less) will tell you that the pretty people are not the interesting or likable characters in life. They've been handed wonderfulness on a silver platter their whole lives and therefore expect it and assume it's like that for everyone. They have no clue. YOU must not have any clue.

eality shows can did through applications for the females that look best in bikinis, but don't expect more

Pete is Right Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

Surely you must be kidding! You really think the casts in Cook Islands or Fiji were most intriguing than this one?

Some may not like characters like Randy, Crystal, GC, Sugar, Marcus/Charlie, or Corinne. But they are interesting and make for great TV. There are people on this show like Kenny, Bob and Susie that actually remind me of real people.

There is good game play here, and people who are clueless. In all, an excellent combination of folks compared to some recent seasons (China was excellent).

scott d Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

who got voted out tonight?

10-16-08

peggym Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

HATED the switch. Lately, Survivor seems to be geared to reward the weak who band together. This was desgined to save the weak tribe, and sacrifice the stronger players who were forced onto it.

k11 Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

I'm thinking Canadians aren't allowed because their French heritage causes them to give up so fast!(I'm just kidding! I love the French!)

anna Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

i love matty.
an honest player? sweet.
and corrine is entertaining.

Anita Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Love reading your blogs Jeff! Looking foward to next week.

Pauline Dillenbeck Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Jeff, would you mind telling Mark Burnett that he should be ashamed to have his name on the company providing captions.
BAD JOB, BAD CAPTIONS. Captions runs whole scenes behind the action, scrambled words, really weird misspellings, words that don't match the speech and change the entire meaning of what was said.

Background music sometimes drowns out speeches, and captioning, good captioning, would really help.

I really hope this gets picked up and passed along.

Pete is Wrong Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Most. Boring. Cast. Ever.

Pete Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

Hey Jeff, looking forward to hanging out with you next summer. The repartee' has to be even more fun in person.

I'm not certain I agree Jacquie had that great a chance at winning had she survived this vote. But I did feel for her going from very safe to voted out because of the tribal switch.

Loved the "ranking your tribemate" pre tribal shuffle twist. I expect Bob to be in the final two or three smiling back at the jury. Ahh, the moments of irony on Survivor!

I'm certain its not blonde hair that makes for boring female contestants, but the trend is clear. That being said, this is one of the most interesting and diverse casts we've seen in a long time.

The only thing I didn't care for in the planning for this episode is that there was no real penalty for the losers. Sure you vote one out, but you get one back, so there is no net loss, you just trade players. The winning tribe should gain an advantage from immunity.

Love Randy's candor!

Diggin' Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

Make that 'enjoy the wingeing.'

Diggin' Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

How about 'SuperSurvivor' where there are no set 'tribes?' Everyone picks one of two colors of stone out of a bag each week, and that's the team they compete on for that day. Everything else could stay pretty much the same, except there's just one camp, and no food is provided. THEN you'd have a real 'Survivor.' Of course, you could also do 'SorrySurvivor' for the simpering skeletors like Courtney, the prissies like Charlie, or the do-nothings like Danny -aka 'GC' as they would be too weak to be cast on 'SuperSurvivor.' It would provide those of us who miss sorely James and Amanda with a sexy cast to ogle, and provide another outlet for people who actually enjoying the wingeing.

Michael Hiscoe Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

I think the tribal switch thing is really tired. I would love to see the tribes stay solid at least once every two or three seasons. Just as you are starting to figure out who these people are and what team they're on, they mix everything up. It comes across as kind of arbitrary and seems to randomize the competition.

Carl Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

Loving your blogs jeff. In casting, did you anticipate these people turning out to be such a negative bunch? Perhaps it’s just the way the last few episodes have been edited, but the castaways this season seem to be real downers, with a few exceptions such as Charlie and Sugar.

ShannonLovesSurvivor Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

I love your blogs Jeff--you are to me what makes Survivor great every season, no matter who is cast. Dalton, can any of the deleted scenes be from Tribal Council? I always want to know what Jeff says to the players that we don't hear. My favorite part of every episode is when he gives them a little verbal spanking before they head back to camp. You're the best Jeff.

Anth Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

"Why is it the attractive blonde women on our show are often the least interesting in reality?"

Um, how was it not inherently obvious from Jacquie and Kelly's pre-game interviews that they were dull as dirt? Don't blame them for being boring; blame casting for not doing their jobs right and putting them on the show in the first place.

Of course, the two best Survivors of all time, Kelly Goldsmith and Courtney Yates, were young, attractive blonde women so who knows.

David Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

About women on survivor: 7 out of the 16 seasons have been won by women, and only once has the final not had a woman in it.

Middle aged people and parents have done very well on Survivor, starting with Hatch.

And so have hot women. Remember Danni - the beauty queen - Miss Kansas - winner in Guatemala?

But, Olympian Crystal - Isn't she the one with "heavy shoes" and lots of excuses? Who can't run and won't paddle?

Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

If Ken took Bob wouldn't that have monopolized the puzzle-solver market, thus leaving Kota at a mental disadvantage?

Survivo Ranking Nerd Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

Jess Probst, I will continue to post this until I have some indication that you've at least seen it.

How would you rank your snuffers?

...sigh Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

No one said a word about the fact that oustide of Olympian Crystal every other woman was considered worthless in the tribal selection. I wish Survivor would make a little more effort at casting. Stop loading the show with hot pointless girls and out of shape middle aged Moms. Find some women with a little grit- can't be that hard can it?

'Diggin Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Espeon 1962 - I suppose you're Canadian, right? LOL!!

CeeLee Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

Jeff, thanks so much for your blog - your insights are a blessing, especially after last episode. For the first time EVER, and I've never missed a Survivor, I didn't care to watch any more (but I will!). I loved the season - with Stephanie - when the tribes were left alone and survived or died on their own. The switch this episode gave all of the lazy losers from Fang more power than they deserved. Sucked.

But, thanks again - love ya!

SJ Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

I am thoroughly loving your blog! Thanks for your honest behind-the-scenes take.

Linda/WI Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

Aw Jeff, don't worry about the critics. Like many others here, I love your blogs and appreciate you taking the time to write them for us. You're the best!

wakeforce1 Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Jeff is my favorite host next to Cat Deely from SYTYCD. I personally can do without the running commentary during challenges, though.

root Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

when is the next round of apps coming out for new seasons? Also, thanks jeff, this is amazing insight.

kelly Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Survivor Gabon is my first time watching Survivor ever! I can't believe how addicted I am to it despite being a city slicker. I mean I would never think about auditioning for the show even though I love it so much. Just the thought of not showering, not brushing my teeth, and all the bugs make my skin crawl. Also don't think the people on the show smell too good with body odor and morning breath. As good as Marcus looks I don't think I want to be smelling him. Also I think in the first episode I remember Ken being really pale and unblemished. But in Episode 4 I saw alot of bug bites and scratches on his arms. I don't think a million is enough for all that.

Espeon1962 Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

When they first came up with the survivor concept, they ran a couple of test games, which included some Canadians in the mix. Unfortunately, they creamed the competition in the physical and mental challenges and at the same time were too goddamn nice, which made for boring tv, so they were banned! LOL (sadly...)

Nick Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Dear Jeff Probst:

You are the MAN. Keep bloggin' for us and we'll keep watching!

Diggin' Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Why aren't Canadians allowed to participate on 'Survivor?' Toronto Tom (over on Dalton's recap board) told us that Canadians are banned. Is that true, and why?

Trump's Hair Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

Well said Red! These hot blond Survivor girls never had to work at being interesting & thus become enervating ciphers.

prplrose5 Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:01 AM EST

I absolutely adore you, Jeff! Keep up the good work. I can't stand G.C. or Kelly. Would not be sad to see either of them go. Would love to see Sugar and Bob go all the way to the end. Which means it probably won't happen (sigh).

Rosie O'Donnel Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

I remember watching those first couple reunion shows where Bryant Gumble or Rosie O'Donnel would host and the whole time I'd think: "Why the hell isn't Probst doing these? He was there, he knows what we want to know, he even seems to watch the shows as they air. Why have Rosie play the fan, and scream and give away cars? Or Bryant Gumble ask questions which he didn't prepare or care about?" Probst makes the show even better, and this blog is one more example of just that. Thanks, JP.

So True Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:56 PM EST

I completely love Survivor and I really enjoyed reading your blog mr. probst. I sure am glad you've never quit Survivor, I couldn't imagine it without you! Thank you Jeff! & EW too!

Miss M Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

Great episode and another great blog Jeff! Must be weird reading about how hot your are! I am rooting for Ace & Sugar to get far that would be fun to watch, but I really like the way Ken is playing the game. Ken has been my pick to win. Thank you so much Jeff for blogging, it makes my fav reality show even more interesting and fun!

Diggin' Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

I've temporarily shortened my name until "The 'Digger" -aka- James competes again. When exactly will that be? Also, we were quite bored during last season's March Madness break and managed to come up with some interesting cast possibilities - my fave was NFL-vs-NBA. You're welcome to share them with Mark Burnett, because it's obvious from this season's 'most-boring-cast-EVER,' that he needs the help.

Diggin' (The 'Digger) Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:05 PM EST

Holy Moley! The 'Probester' (thank you, Regis Philbin) is kinda funny. While I'm on that subject, let me say that I'm almost as bummed as you are that Mark met Kelly first. LOL! Oh, well - you're cute and sassy, so you'll be fine. Profound view on 'blondes,' Jeff. As far as Jacquie not speaking to you at the Reunion show is concerned . . . honey, someone needs to talk to you about not wading where you work. There's a big sea out there, and I believe you've taken SCUBA lessons, haven't you? Or was that Kelly? LOL!

Alan of Montreal Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

If they have it in Canada, they should do it in Newfoundland--have the contestants deal with kissing cod and eating seal-flipper pie.

By the way, I felt sorry for Jeff Probst during the Emmys--you could tell he really thought the reality-hosts-as-hosts idea was a terrible idea...

timbit_queen Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Love ya Jeff. I do hope you read these. I have a sugestion I want you to pass along to Mark, please. I have thought about this since all stars. I would love to see a season of second chances, instead of another all stars. Bring back the first ppl that have been voted off in their respective seasons and make a new Survivor with them. If they were chosen to be on the show, they must have something good to offer. We just didn't get to see it. I would love the chance to get to know them better, and it would be so much fun to speculate who would win the game and the popularity contest with America.

And while you're at it, have that show filmed here in Canada. As the other poster bellow stated we have many beautiful settings and lakes. It would be soo much fun to see them in Northern Ontario beeing eaten by our black flies, lol. Oh, and watch out for the bears. Not as ferocious as the lions of Africa, but still fun to have around. But do go along with the top idea, please I beg you.

bruno Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

corrine is growing on you??? HOW? did she say ANYTHING this episode?....if that was a giveaway probst, you just gave it away...

survivor fan Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

question: Are these blogs written at the time the show was being filmed? That would be cool. If they are written now, that's too bad cause Probst knows how it all plays out.

Survivor Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

And on an unrelated note, Jeff, in this episode, it looked like you had a bit of a survivor crush on Sugar. Just sayin'.

Thanks for sticking with the show all these years. I've been a fan.

Sawadee Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Simon, I completely agree with you! I don't get why the haters are out! I appreciated Cook Island a lot. And was excited that Survivor was going to be more representative.

To Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

I've never seen an attractive asian man. You're all ugly. Stupid and ugly. With tiny d!cks.

To Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

Are you kidding? " . . .to lots of white Americans who've never seen Asians or Hispanics before." You are the reason that negative stereotyping even exists! You are the epitome of stupidity, you stupid, ignorant, ridiculous, self-loathing (yea, self-loathing) crybaby. Open the phone book and look under African-American, Asian-American and Hispanic (whatever). There are thousands of entrys. Now, try to find one Caucasian-American entry. Just one. There are NONE! Black Entertainment Television. No White Entertainment Television, is there? Black Caucus. Where's the White Caucus? Blacks get a month of history. Asian get a month for their history, Hispanics, too. Where's White History Month? Oh, that's right. We don't get one. We just get the bill to pay for yours. As a matter of fact, we get the bill for everything you lazy, worthless, hand-out-taking, low-class B!TCH-A$$ MFs do.

Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Probst - hated you in season one. Thought you were just too cheezy. And I say it out of love. But I admit your Emmy was well-deserved, you bring out the dirt and put salt in wounds to help make this show what it is. Glad to know you're writing these things after the show airs and not after they're taped. Keep up the good work.

David Boyd Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Bob being picked when he was was not odd. First, remember that picks from Kota were made by Fang, who saw him only at challenges. The first pick from Kota was Charlie (obviously a better choice than Bob.) Randy picked Corrine (the first woman) and then Suzie picked Bob out of the three Kota who remained. So, basically Bob was - possibly- +only overlooked once.

Mtl Sam Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

What's happening with Ace's accent? he's sounding more and more American with each day, have you noticed?

Anne Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Jeff, I'm with you on the comment about everyone not picking Bob- I hope they all regret it!
Love ya still, don't worry about your critics!!

Hoodbury Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

Lovin the blogs Jeff and Dalton. But come on Jeff, Kelly is not better "tv" than Jacque was. If she is, then perhaps thats whats wrong with America :P . Been watching the show since Season 1 and I always prefer watching the people that play the game hard and want to win, they are good "tv".
Do you seriously really prefer the whiny twinks to the females that can actually compete and think? Come on Jeff.

hhb Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Jeff, is there any way you guys could just keep having James on every season? I miss him so much. He was great televsion, in every way imaginable.

jnl Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Love the blog, Jeff. We don't see much of you on the show, so it's really nice to hear your voice (thoughts) on what is going on. The thing I take offense to is that you call it "unscripted reality", but the biggest thing that happened - the switch - was completely scripted! Not that I didn't enjoy it, just pointing it out. Can't wait for next week.

Morgan Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

I HATE the Fang Tribe. And Crystal, GC, and Kelly are just absolutely pathetic players and human beings. I was so frustrated during tribal council and I know Kelly may be an interesting character but she's just a spoiled brat just like Paloma was last week. They sit around and complain about the mean people on the Kota tribe who are just plain better than them.

CB Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Jeff, I have been watching the show since season 1. Thank you for taking the time to write this blog for us fans. It is really fascinating to get your point of view for a change.

Question for Next Time Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Serious question for Jeff: Did the contestants take anti-malaria meds during the shoot in Gabon? And if so, how was the medication administered so as to remain free from intervention by the production crew?

BC Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

I'd rather have Probst blog about all the hot chicks he's banged.

Lizzie Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

I love Jeff's insights! He has always seemed a straight shooter and it is like the cherry on the Sunday. The last ingredient needed to perfect the Survivor experience. I also can't believe the major suck-a-tude of Feng's 4. Kenny seems the only one using his brain. And I really wanted that three to start shinning. Oh well. Charlie is so in love with Marcus he might just throw himself in front of a proverbial bullet just to help him out. Marcus knows this too. I can't help but love Sugar at this point. I simply question her NOT being apprehensive about Ace. Thanks for the blog Jeff!!! And **** the losers who complain, they can all Suck It!!

Republicans Suck Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I'm NOT surprised that Bob was picked as late as he was. The reason he was ranked #3 was because his alliance members (Marcus, Charlie, Corinne and Jacquie) voted for him. He would've been way down the ranking if it weren't for them. Let's face it, he may be a workhorse at camp but he sucks at competitions. Physically he is no match to the young ones like Marcus, Ace, Matty, etc. Mentally he couldn't even beat Kenny solving the puzzle when they up against each other last week. I'm sure all this were in the survivors' mind when they were picking teams again. I do agree with Jeff that the best strategic move on the show was when Kenny picked Kelly. If I was Matty, I would be scared sh*t. Never underestimate the power of minorities (Kenny, Crystal and CG).

footballmom Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

Hey i'm a schemer and manipulator! Mom of five and a wife, it's part of survival!LOL it would be really nice to know what is up with that Ace dude....he is a strange one, what is the point of faking an accent?

AA Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

Oh and another thing, how about finally coming to Canada for a season? Our summers are hot and we have lots of lakes that you can use as water sources/bikini magnets! Any chance of suggesting it to Mark Burnett?

AA Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Hi Jeff--not sure how the casting process works, but I would love to see a season that has all "players" for a change. There's hopefully one or maybe two people a season who appear to have watched Survivor in the past and know how to play "the game", but I just think it would be an interesting season to be full of schemers and manipulators.

Django Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

So cool to read Jeff's thoughts (Even if I don't agree with him - as in Jacqui vs. Kelly). Huge thanks for the entertaining insights!

deb Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I don't watch the show, and don't really care about the contestants, but I love the blog. Jeff, you're the bomb.

Marie Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

Well said, you "simple little reality host." Appreciate the morning laugh, and your time!

JMJ Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

I was also shocked that Bob got chosen so far down the line. The man is a workhorse with a brilliant mind. They underestimated Yau-Man back in his season and look at the threat he turned into. I hope the same thing happens here and Bob takes home the big prize at the end. I also noticed that Ace's accent is starting to slip more and more. Maybe he is a fake and a con, but I don't think he's going to be around long enough for us to find out.

Great blog Jeff! Thanks!

Red Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

Pretty blond girls are usually not interesting because they never had to be.

Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

I will say that another of the best "gimmicks" Survivor has come up with to keep people watching is Probsts' fantastic blog reports. I had sworn off the show, but now I'm watching every week just so I can follow Jeff's posts! This is a man of many talents. Just saying...

MissBumptious Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Love that Jeff defended my hometown boy, Bob. What was up with leaving him standing there like that? I hope he ultimately feasts on their entrails. Literally. And has anyone verified that Crystal was, indeed, an Olympic athlete? Man, I think I could take her in a race.

fooballmom Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

I would have to agree, been with survivor since Richard and look forward to friday morning, Dalton and Jeff! I would love to be on Survivor, is there room for a mother of five who is an elementary librarian? I need a vacation!LOL

Craig Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Who are these so-called critics who don't like this blog? These entries are tremendous - how often do you get complete candor from someone who's an insider?

Usually after a tribal switch-up, the crappier tribe has the advantage, because whichever new tribe has the higher number of those people will lose more challenges, and then get rid of the people from the good tribe. But this time, I don't think Fang can be saved. Even if new Fang gets rid of old Kota over the next few episodes, Randy's not going back after the merge, and neither is Susie. GC, Kenny and Crystal need to figure out a way to form an alliance of the wretched after the merge, but I'm not sure there's enough gameplay sense between the three of them to do it. This is promising to be a disappointing season so far.

I too have to say I love both Jefff and Dalton's blogs - they've become essential parts of the Survivor experience.

KJ Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Keep em coming, Jeff!

Teresa Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

I think its an interesting comment about the attractive blonds not necessarily being the best tv. Maybe in real life they don't have to try that hard to have people interested in them, all they need is the golden hair and the bolt ons to get attention. In Survivor that will only get you so far though, with their tribemates and with the viewers. As its been mentioned, the most interesting players to watch have always been interesting personalities. There have been countless hot chicks that I (a dedicated Survivor fan) couldn't name.

Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Pinky -- upon further reflection, I think you're right. I think Survivor, more than any other show, has done a great job in getting minority representation. As an Asian male, I think was being extra sensitive because the last two portrayals (Kenny and the Asian male on Survivor China) were shy, effeminate and easily swayed by white women. But your argument has changed my position. I stand corrected.

Ann Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

LOVE this blog... Jeff's honesty is a beautiful thing!

Pinky Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Simon, I'm a latina married to a caucasian man. We both thought Ozzie ruled the world on each season of Survivor he was on. Even though I don't like him personally, I think he's an excellent player. If I were ever stranded ANYWHERE (on a deserted island, in the desert, on the side of the road), I'd want him there to help me. He's that good. We both loved James and his personality and altheticisim. I, personally, don't think there is a lack of representation on these types of shows. I think you're perhaps picking at something that doesn't seem to be there. There are lazy and apathetic people of all races on Survivor, this season happens to be GC and Kelly (who happens to be caucasian). Maybe I live in a bubble but I don't think that the minorities are getting the shaft... GC was nominated to be leader and gave it up. That was not a planned move on Survivor's part, that was GC. I can't get mad about a stereotype on a reality show.

orville Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

You know, Jeff was right. I *am* pulling for Sugar for some peculiar reason. I kind of want to see her pull one over on all the players who are underestimating her. And Randy is growing on me. Probably because he sees everyone for the idiots they are and just to hear what's going to spill out of his mouth next. Surprisingly entertaining. Both of them. Hopefully, they will also be surprisingly intelligent and strategic game players too--it would be a shame to lose them too soon.

Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

Pinky -- you're absolutely right. There have been some great ethnic contestants.

My point, from the minority's point of view, is that because we have such limited representation in the media, each example is more important. For example, for whites in the media, because there are millions, no one ever associates any attributes to them. But if you only have 3 black portrayals and one happens to be arrogant, then it's easier to stereotype blacks as arrogant. There's even less portrayals of Asians so negative portrayals tend to stick more.

I remember the season that Yul won, one of the white contestants in the final tribal council jury complained that Yul, Becky and Ozzie were "boring". The problem is that oftentimes, minorities don't have the luxury to try to be funny or interesting because they know that, whether they want to or not, they are representing their ethnicities to lots of white Americans out there who've never seen Asians or Hispanics before.

Pinky Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

Always look forward to J.Probst's blog... my little slice of Friday morning heaven. Loved the ranking of the tribe members, every season there's a challenge like this and it always "stirs the pot." I know Ken's playing this game to win but he looks like he just got done eating 20 oreos - that facial hair has got to go (and yes, I know they can't shave). Sorry that Kelly's in the game. I can't stand to listen to people complain about others not liking them. LISTEN TO YOURSELF! I don't like you either! As for the race comments (Simon, I'm looking at you) - don't forget you had James and 2 black winners, Earl and Vecepia. Yul won for the Asians and Sandra won for the Hispanics. Please quit pointing fingers and remember that the casting directors and producers can't predict how well people will do on the show until after they're on it. Crystal looks good on paper (Olympic runner!) but isn't so good in the game itself.

CanadianFan Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

I had to laugh when Crystal gave the camera a little 'look' when speaking with Jacquie - she clearly was put off by her last minute appeal. Also, did anyone else notice that Ken was creeping on Kelly? He gave a look just before the commercial break that was priceless; part dreamy, part lusty, all scheming! All in all, not surprised they re-merged the tribes. This season was going down in flames fast unless they made a major switch-up. Notice how these changes happen during a weak season? The producers had to do something fast, because this fang is toothless!

Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

You should learn how to read because you're missing the point. I'm not saying that Fang is losing because of their race, I'm saying that it's socially interesting that people group themselves by race regardless of whether it's forced (like Cook Islands) or not (Gabon).

Don't be one of those typical white folks who immediately hiss anytime the word "race" comes up. Invoking the term "race" does not always mean the "race card".

To Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

Dude - too much time on your hands with nothing to do but study race cards like you're reading Tarot cards. Most of the people on Fang suck, has nothing to do with race.

Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

Also, it's interesting that every season, the random tribe switcheroo leaves an undeserving victim voted off. This time, it was Jacquie. I think the season before, it was some typical stud-looking white guy who was clearly dominating and was well-positioned to go far -- but the tribe switch mixed up his plans and he was gone.

And finally, we need better representation from minorities. We get the withdrawn, difficult GC for the black male and the scrawny effeminate Kenny to represent the Asian man -- c'mon!

To CanuckGirl Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Jeff Probst IS hot! Just give into the dimples and smile, listen to how smart and funny he is...and let yourself believe in the ultimate Hotness of Jeff. ;-)

Simon Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

I think it's interesting how this season isn't even "race" wars and yet the contestants still group themselves by white vs. minorities. Case in point:

1. The original Kota tribe was the all-white Abercrombie & Fitch crew + Paloma and not surprisingly, she was the first person they kicked off.

2. Even with the Fang tribe, the minorities Crystal, GC and Kenny have formed an alliance of minority outcasts. You can sense that white boy Matty is not really feeling this alliance although he has no choice but to take part.

3. This situation is similar to Cook Islands, when the misfit alliance of Yul, Becky, the black woman (I forgot her name) and Ozzie looked like they were in deep trouble against that season's Abercrombie Crew but through some luck, Ozzie's physical briliance, and the implosing of the white crew, Yul came out.

4. This being said, I don't see this season's minorities lasting long because they don't have Yul's brains or Ozzie's athleticism.

Jeff your the man, been a die hard survivor fan since the very begining...Last night it was a loose loose situation because we were dealing with two hot ladies and as much as kelly's attitude is pissing me off lately she still remains very hot...that being said I was upset to see Jacquie go, she was doing pretty well up to this point but in survivor you have to be prepared for anything and she could have put up a better fight to stay. Strategically she failed, she should have thrown ace under the bus...ace is tight with sugar and Jacquie needed to make Ken see that(since Ken is clearly the puppet master behind the moronic crystal and the pathetic excuse for a survivor G sizzle)...thanks Jeff these blogs are awesome, keep em coming

Caroldee Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

I think you are doing a great job of blogging about this season..keep it up! YEs I think that some of these ditzy blonde are way smarter than what they believe them to be.

CanuckGirl Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

First of all, these blogs are starting to make me think that Probt is hot. Which is scary. So part of me wants him to stop since his being good looking is several degrees of wrong and evil. But most of me wants him to continue because I look forward to these recaps every week like the trained monkey i am. Brilliant as ever, Jeff!! :)

Kellan Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

I think it was smart for Ken to pick Kelly for his own needs, but it made Fang even weaker. That they even considered getting rid of Ace was amazing to me. I like Ace, but I don't listen to him to hear what he's saying, I listen to hear his fake accent change. :) Fang is one of the WORST tribes ever on Survivor. Most of them don't even try to win. I think they didn't care about losing because they felt Ace & Jacqui were easy vote outs, but that will eventually catch up to them. Losing luzury challenges will hurt. Kota can come into the merge more intact and have plenty of vote out options. At this point, I'm rooting for Marcus and Bob. BTW - Bob is better than most people on either tribe. Completely underestimated, and I hope he gets to the end.

LOVE JEFF PROBST!!!!!!! Thanks for the great insights Jeff. Keep on blogging!

Matt Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

And just a brief comment on all the blonde, hot women who usually populate every season of Survivor--is it possible that their "hotness" doesn't really draw in as many viewers as you think it does? Believe me, I'm not opposed to seeing beautiful women, but in a choice between eye candy and a man or woman who is actively going to play the game and keep things interesting, I'd go with that person. Just saying.

Matt Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Love the blog posts, Jeff. Thanks for taking the time to do them, as they provide us with some thoughts from an "insider," which are always very revealing!

Survivorkev Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

Ace's accent seem to change with the wind. He's interesting enough but fake as a 3 dollar bill! I love Jeff Probst!

mipo777 Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

Jeff, I think its amazing that you take the time to write such candid & details observations for us. This brief blog has taken my anticipation for the next weeks show to a new level. Keep em coming!

PA Gal Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

Gosh, lots of thoughts this morning mainly about the sad Fang tribe - scary stupid people. Why does everybody go with what Crystal says? She's pretty lame in the "brain" department - can't say anything except worry about who has the HII. Kenny's choice of Kelly was a smart one, although Jackie was a stronger competitor IMO. And after watching the deleted scene, I wonder where Ace's accent went? OVer at Kota, I hope that bow-tie Bob will remember his earlier conversation with Corrinne about the four-person alliance and with Jackie gone, maybe he can step into her spot. I like Bob's chances better this week than last. Still shaking my head over how pathetic Fang tribe is....
