Guns N' Roses' 'Chinese Democracy' to be doused in a November rain of Dr Pepper

Oct 23, 2008, 12:17 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Advertising, Food and Drink, Music, Press Release of the Week

Drpepperaxlgnr_l Now that Chinese Democracy is rilly for reelz coming out in stores next month, Dr Pepper plans to make good on its offer to give a free soda to everyone in America if Axl Rose managed to get the album released before the end of 2008. "We never thought this day would come," said Tony Jacobs, vice president of marketing for Dr Pepper, in a press release. (Neither did we, Tony, neither did we.) "But now that it's here all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."

Not that the pop bottler is going to deliver a soda to everyone's doorstep. To get your free beverage, you have to have Internet access. On Nov. 23, the day of the CD's scheduled release, you can go to drpepper.com and register for a coupon to be mailed to you (coupons will be available online only for 24 hours, starting at 12:01 a.m. ET). Once it arrives, in four to six weeks, redeem it for a free 20-ounce bottle of Dr Pepper at any store that carries the drink in that size. Coupons will expire on Feb. 28, 2009, by which date you'll have had plenty of time to listen to Axl's long-gestating opus and decide whether or not it requires a soda to make the listening experience complete.

Show of hands: Who's going to buy Chinese Democracy? Who's going to take Dr Pepper up on its offer? Who plans to do both?

Chinese democracy is an insult to Guns n' Roses.
Classic GN'R All the way!

Michael Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Chinese Democracy rocks! Finally some decent new rock!!

rainia Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

axle needs to go back to his hiding place and stay.remember what he did on the mtv awards a few years ago?that was a staight-up insult to the rest uf the real gnr.and he looked like a freak.but what do you expect from a jacked-up alcoholic heroin addict with anger issues.go a-way axle just go a-way.

johnathan m Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 05:21 AM EST

why dont dr pepper just post a online coupon you just click on and print out , would be alot easier and you wouldnt have to wait for it either, and what with this 24 hours crap, that not enuff time , do it for least 3 weeks to a month.

Nick Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

I might have to take them up on both!

Earth Ling Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Wrong patty, the truth of the matter, which I hope doesn't hurt your feelings too much -- no one cares about you.

Jay B Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

im buying the album 4sure!!!! but im in canada, so no DR Pepper for me... i think i will survive.

GnR RULES!!!!!

Leo!!! Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

hells yeah I'm doing both...love me some GNR and some of the Dr. \ m /

rock on!!

Jim Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Get a life Patty. Sorry, but maybe some of us are a little tired of Rehanna, Carrie Underwood, Jonas Brothers, Mylee Cyrus, and Fall Out Boy.. It's time for some non-cheesy rock n roll for a change.
Axl Rose sold out Madison Square Garden in about 15 minutes two years ago with him being the only original member and no new album in over 15 years. Not too sure how many people from that era can do that without the whole, original band still remaining. So apparently, people still care.

Carrie Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

I'm buying Chinese Democracy. I'll print that Dr. Pepper coupon for my niece because I hate the stuff.

Nix Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

Piqued.

gaff Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

I'll take the Dr. Pepper, but if I'm listening to GnR album when I drink it, it'll be Appetite.

Tenna Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

I love me some Dr. Pepper. And I love some old school GnR, so we'll see how this one holds up.

Jim Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

Yes, people do still care about Gnr. Who else could not release an album in 15 years and still remain relevant? Peak the curiosity of the music industry and the masses? Maybe Shania Twain before her UP cd? Garth Brooks? The Beatles? But barely. With Gnr's abrupt ending in 93, the world was left truncated and their thirst for new Gnr "sounds" has been insatiable. People hunger for more of their anthemic, larger than life rock n roll sound. Even the people who hate them, and if you remember, Gnr has always been hated, that was part of their popularity, image, and persona, want Gnr back so they have a mainstream American Rock Band to "hate" America loved to hate Axl, he is an icon and a household name. Axl and Gnr can never die.

Andie Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Dr. Pepper is the only pop I drink (and yes I said "pop") so I'm up for a free one. But I'll pass on the disc. I've come this far without it, but only a few days without my Dr. Pepper.

Ep Sato Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Now that my 10 year old sister is getting into rock, I figure this'll be a good intro to a classic rock band. Good or not, the man gave enough to rock music to be worth giving one last chance to.

However, if he goes on tour and acts a fool at his shows again, I'm so out of here!

As for Dr. Pepper, I wouldn't turn down a free anything (shucks, I'd probably take a free punch in the nose if it was offered to me for free).

Emoney Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

I'm very impressed that Dr. Pepper is keeping its promise, and I will absolutely get the coupon and accept my freebie. We'll see about Chinese Democracy. Honestly, I don't dare to hope...

Stephanie T. Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Yep, Dave Naughton is probably pissed off right now.

Basically, yeah. Dr. Pepper just changed their slogan to:

(To Welcome to the Jungle)

Axl is a Pepper, his album took 15 years, Best Buy bought the selling rights, other stores are crying tears. Dr. Pepper made a deal, 20 oz is a steal. Send out the coupon and add it to your meal! He's a Pepper, Axl's not a heffer! He's gonna cash it cash it in, in!

Bobbie Overmanb Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

Patty go away

Bobbie Overman Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Dr. Pepper rocks. The new Guns allows it to. Im gettin em both.

ben Post Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

no fanatic GNR fan here, but still an admirer. Will prob purchase the record opening day for the sake of being apart of its uniqueness- and yes the freebie junkie that i am will most certainly take dr.pepper up on their offer.

Charles Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

As a GNR and Dr. Pepper fanatic. This is the ultimate double win. Thank you.

Eric Nowak Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Ah yes, I remember when the Use Your Illusion records came out in Nov. '91, and kids lined up for a full city block outside our local record outlet to buy it at the stroke of midnight. I was 22 then; I'm 38 now. Yow. Being so damn curious (and nostalgic) about this record, I will stop in to Best Buy on the release date.

Winona Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Definitely going for the free Pepper; possibly considering buying Chinese Democracy.

Dan Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Patty you're retarded, don't speak for people you don't know.

Casey Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Well Patty, you whiny little brat, you commented didn't you?

MethosI Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

I'm getting that Dr Pepper. Not the album, though.

Amelia Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

I'm at least going to get the coupon. That is so awesome. I barely drink Dr. Pepper, but how cool is it that they are holding to their word?

Ali Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

I'll take both. I'll get multiple copies of the album, both for myself and as Christmas presents.

Eric Friedmann Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Actor David Naughton ("I'm a Pepper, you're a Pepper, he's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?") is probably having a fit right about now!

NY Johnny Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

I'll take both. It'll be nice to hear some bada** rock for a change. Listen up, EMO!

Luis PJ Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Yes I would like to be a Dr. Pepper too :)

Dana Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Loved Guns and Roses it will be interesting to hear the new album

Arsenio Billingham Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Diet Dr. Pepper tastes more like regular Dr. Pepper!

daisyj Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

I have recently acquired a taste for Dr. Pepper (because a lot of the time it's the only thing left in the fridge at work), but long since lost my taste for GNR. So I'd say, yes to one, no to the other.

Jeanne Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

I'll take the Dr. Pepper but skip the album. Dr. Pepper is awesome, GnR, not so much.

Cracker Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

I'm going to get the CD and the Dr P both. I love the way Dr. Pepper is using this whole thing to their advantage. Fun stuff.

More GNR stories please! Plenty of people still care about them.

laura Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

MMmmmmm I love Dr. Pepper!

Josh Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

I can't stand Guns N' Roses but I'll take the Dr. Pepper. Oh, and Nov. 23 is a Sunday. I thought new CDs came out on Tuesdays.

Scott K Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

Give me my Dr. Pepper, could care less about the album...

Patty Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

There have been like 20 GNR posts in the last week here at PW - stop it. No one cares about them anymore.
