Ellen DeGeneres takes on Sarah Palin: But will she change people's minds?

Oct 22, 2008, 02:52 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Morning Madness, Politics as Entertainment

Multiple snaps in the direction of Ellen DeGeneres, who used her daytime talk show today to argue against Sarah Palin's recent announcement (during an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network) that she'd support a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage, a position that puts her at odds with her own running mate, Sen. John McCain. Ellen's case (the whole speech embedded below) is pretty simple -- "I don't like. I don't like it. I don't agree. And maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal. But I feel that we're all equal." -- but it makes perfect sense to me. (Then again, I'm gayer than a tangerine cocktail, so of course it does.) What I'm wondering, though, is this: No matter how much Ellen's socially conservative fans dig her show, do you think her little pep talk will actually change any of their minds? And on a more personal note, has a celebrity endorsement or plea ever made you rethink your position on an important topic?

Very Nice Site.It was my pleasure to visit your Website. I am also very Website you enjoy the article. And I also have the feeling that it was really a pity that we didn’t meet each other earlier. Because the kindness and warmth in your Website can make me completely relaxed and happy. I hope that you will visit my blog too to see if you can have the same feelinghttp://www.buynikeshoes.com

I don't think the point of public figures speaking out is changing other people's minds so much as adding to the national discourse and furthering the dialogue. Big media sets the agenda for what the public thinks and talks about over the course of the day, what issues are on our minds, and that makes people with the power to be heard responsible for voicing the different sides of opposition and speaking for different interest groups. These are the people airing out politics in the public forum, they aren't dead-set on changing anyone's mind.
On an entirely separate side-note, I love Ellen thismuch and want to give her a big old hug.

Carol, you disappoint me. Why would you vote for 90% Bush? Do you like the way the economy is right now? Because I don't. OBAMA/BIDEN '08

Carol Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

I will be so glad when this election is over, but wonder what Ellen and the View will talk about then? I used to love the Ellen show, but it has gotten too Gay and too
Obama for me. Here's to McCain-Palin for the White House.

PA Voter Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

"Alliances" I've done my research too. And here's what I found. Not only does McCain have some shady "alliances" of his own, he lies about Obama's alleged ones:
Re Ayers/Obama, source factcheck.org: "We find McCain's accusation that Obama "lied" to be groundless. It is true that recently released records show half a dozen or so more meetings between the two men than were previously known, but Obama never denied working with Ayers. Despite the newly released records, there's still no evidence of a deep or strong "friendship" with Ayers, a former radical anti-war protester whose actions in the 1960s and '70s Obama has called "detestable" and "despicable."

PA Voter Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 07:01 AM EST

Newsweek.com 10/12/08:
Charles Keating was a real estate speculator and savings and loan owner. His institution failed, costing many investors their life savings and sticking taxpayers with a $2.8 billion bailout cost.

McCain received $112,000 from him, his family and associates, and took trips to the Bahamas at Keating's expense. McCain took up Keating's cause with financial regulators who were investigating the businessman.

Keating eventually went to prison, and McCain received a mild rebuke from the Senate ethics committee. McCain repaid $112,000 to the U.S. Treasury and reimbursed Keating for the trips. He later said attending two meetings with bank regulators on behalf of Keating was "the worst mistake of my life" and that it had made him more sensitive to the need for government reform.

PA Voter Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

Chicago Tribune, 10/23/08 Steve Chapman
McCain has attacked Barack Obama for his connection to former Weather Underground member William Ayers, who in McCain's words "was unrepentant over his activities as a member of a terrorist organization." In the final debate, McCain said that "we need to know the full extent of that relationship."
But though he thinks it's terrible for Obama to associate with dangerous militants, he thinks it's fine for him to do the same thing. And he'd rather go back to the Hanoi Hilton than disclose "the full extent of that relationship."
After the Letterman interview, I repeatedly e-mailed McCain campaign aides with several questions about the association. Their response? silence.
This leads us to some inescapable conclusions. 1) McCain lied when he promised to lay out his relationship with Liddy. 2) he is hypocritical in demanding something of Obama that he won't do himself. 3) he is scared to tell Americans the truth because they won't like what they hear

PA Voter Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 06:58 AM EST

"Alliances", I mean "Obamafants Unite": nice try on providing a 'nonpartisan' source for your argument.
"Accuracy In Media (AIM) is a conservative American organization which monitors the news media in the United States. It is frequently described by the mainstream media and other media watchdog groups as a conservative organization." Source: Fox News
TRY DOING YOUR RESEARCH ON SITES THAT ARE NOT RIDICULOUSLY BIASED

Alliances Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

One of you Obamafants please tell me why...

When everyone jumps on it like it is the end of their career Yet Obama is making bad judgment after bad judgment and people follow him without question???

Hell Howard Dean (democrat) yelled funny at a DNC and the whole party abandoned him!!

Alliances Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Obama has so many worrisome alliances, I mean, "associations" with some really off-beat people: David Ayers, Rev Wright, Rashid Khalidi, Tony Rezko, ACORN. All of which he lies about the relationship and down plays their role in his life.

Read up on Obama's childhood mentor Frank Marshall Davis who was "publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA". source: http://www.aim.org/aim-column/obamas-communist-mentor/

There is a common thread among all of these alliances yet most people voting for him just brush it off as if it some fleeting flub of a line of a speech.

Before someone comes back and says do your research or "this one thing isn't enough" -- my friends I have done much research and I see a lot of red flags being raised more than care to vote for.

OBAMA 08 Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

Obama's "buying his way" into the Presidency? Is that all you can come up with? Guess it has nothing to do with the fact that his plans and ideas MAKE SENSE to people with functioning brains in their heads. Nope, that can't be it at all. He's BUYING his way in. Yup. You figured it out!

Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

I really hate when stars try to persuade anyone to do anything. All movie stars a celebrities want is money. They want you to watch their show or movies so they will be popular and make lots of money. I don't care about Ellen being gay. Who cares!!! If she wants to be treated the same I don't go around telling people I'm heterosexual and you all should be too. Stay out of politics. I think Oprah should run for president. She could buy her way into the presidency like Obama. The way people follow her and think everything she says is what they should believe. She is the next Jim Jones. I never thought I would say this, but I watched her for years until she has become predjudice and wants to be God or something.

Lawrence Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

Taxed, have fun on election day. You have not changed my mind. OBAMA/BIDEN 08!

TAXED (enough said!) Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Read the whole article: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95204017. How about this article: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94900680 . Even NPR one of the most liberal places in the world calls out the Obama tax plan.

Both plans aren’t ideal, neither candidate is ideal. But I am looking at the bigger picture and voting for the guy and gal who are taking less of my money now and for the future. McCain is less of a wild card then Obama – His inexperience with most things leaves a lot to be desired. From his own VP choice “Biden spoke his mind during the primary, when he stated that Barack was not ready to be President and that the Presidency was no place for on the job training.”

Lawrence said: "Senator Obama believes that our current budgeting and borrowing practices are fiscally unwise and unsustainable. This is why he strongly supports and has voted for commonsense "Pay As You Go," or "PayGo" rules, which would require any new increases in discretionary spending to be offset by a reduction in other areas of spending."

He wants to increase spending….do you think Universal healthcare is FREE? Do you think his college education plan is FREE? Someone is footing the bill for all this “fairness.” He is one of major contributors to pork spending in the Senate.

“Sen. Barack Obama, one of the loudest critics of the firms, has been on the receiving end of over $125,000 in campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie since his election to the U.S. Senate four years ago - the highest amount of any Member of Congress over the last 10 years. Fifty seven percent of Fannie and Freddie contributions have been made to Democratic members.” therightchange.com

TAXED Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

My company employs over 150,000 people and already does what McCains plan is suggesting…which is get small businesses and individuals an opportunity to look in another state for cheaper healthcare. They won't deny coverage UNLESS Obama has his trillion dollar universal mandated plan in place.

"...the biggest problem with Obama's health plan isn't how little it will save, but how much it will spend. One of Obama's key promises is that under his plan, everyone will be able to get a health plan at least as good as those available to members of Congress.

"If your congressman is like your average federal employee, he's got the Blue Cross Standard Option (plan), and it costs in excess of $12,000 a year," Antos says. "That isn't going to happen. It can't happen."

Such a generous benefit package, combined with Obama's promise to limit out-of-pocket health costs, would require enormous public subsidies. The Obama campaign itself estimates the plan could add as much as $60 billion a year "

Lawrence Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

JohnMcCain.com proposes: the value of the employer provided insurance will now show up as additional income for the employees...John McCain’s generous refundable tax credit ($5,000 for families and $2,500 for individuals) will not only shield millions of families from a tax increase but will actually give them MORE dollars to invest in their health care needs.
TAXED, again I ask, how much does your employer pay for your healthcare coverage, and is it $5,000 or is it more? Like I said, mine is $12,000. And let's not forget, that $5,000 also counts as income and will be taxed. Not a good deal.

Lawrence Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Senator Obama believes that our current budgeting and borrowing practices are fiscally unwise and unsustainable. This is why he strongly supports and has voted for commonsense "Pay As You Go," or "PayGo" rules, which would require any new increases in discretionary spending to be offset by a reduction in other areas of spending. Senator Obama voted against the most recent effort to raise the national debt limit. The current national debt has exceeded $8.6 trillion dollars, and nearly $4 trillion of that debt is now held by foreign governments. Our national debt and annual budget deficits effectively tax all Americans by adding to the amount of interest paid to service U.S. borrowing; Senator Obama would rather invest these hundreds of billions of dollars into national priorities, such as securing our homeland, improving our schools and providing needed benefits to our veterans. Source: obama.senate.gov

Lawrence to Taxed: Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

"My employer won't deny me coverage, because it isn't true." Again, I ask how do you know it isn't true? And again I ask, how much is your employer paying for your coverage, and is it more than $5,000? It sounds like you do not have all the facts to make this argument. Also, how much of your current taxes are federal income taxes, and how much are state and local school and property taxes? Answer these questions and then we can talk some more.

Caribou Barbie Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

TAXED Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

My employer won't deny me coverage, because it isn't true. But my employer will deny my coverage as soon as Obama says he will bring in Universal Healthcare by the government

I said I make a little over 200K, I bring in about half or less of that AFTER taxes. So yeah, I am not rich.
BTW - Biden in a speech yesterday said he won't tax anyone making over 150K, so they aren't even elected yet and there are already lowering the classification of "RICH"

How is he getting his money to pay for ALL the programs he wants to implement. The American tax payers thats who!

The McCain Plan DOES NOT tax:
* Premiums paid by families and individuals
* Employers for providing health care coverage
* Medical expenses like the cost of a procedure or medication
* Insurance claims

Lawrence Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

Taxed, I'd like to know what proof you have that your employer won't drop your healthcare coverage. And do you know how much your employer pays for your insurance coverage? Is it $5,000? And as far as you being "rich" you're a hell of a lot richer than me, my family, my friends, their family & friends, and Joe the Plumber. I don't understand how anyone's supposed to sympathize with you because you choose to live where there are high taxes. My PA neighborhood is filled with people from NY and NJ who came here to avoid high taxes. That's your state's fault, not the Federal government's.

My employer is not going to drop healthcare, it is a long standing community in the US. Most employers won't. It will be far worse for the econmoy if Obama is elected then McCain. You say I get tax breaks.....I get absolutely NO tax breaks right now -- I am not rich or poor I am right in the middle -- I think it is called the middle class and I am already extremely TAXED

I don't expect anyone to feel sorry for me at all especially for being fortunate in my community. I want everyone to realize that a combined income of 200K is NOT rich, that is all. Don't most people want to be successful, well maybe not? And if Obama gets elected I will check back in a couple years and see how many people making more 40K a year are complaining about who they elected! And Obama turns out not to be the knight and shining armor for the US and the economy! I guess it won't matter because we will all be poor in 4 years!

Nope, you're wrong about that, unnamed blogger. You have to at least be paying social security and wage taxes to receive the rebate check under Obama. But McCain doesn't require anyone be paying ANY form of taxes to get his health insurance "rebate". Sorry, but that's an invalid point. Please do your homework or get someone who understands this information to explain it to you. And "TAXED" you aren't taking into account that your employer is probably going to drop your healthcare benefits under McCain since he's taxing them. And that $5,000 tax "credit" he'll give you in return, which is also going to be taxed, will NOT cover the insurance plan your employer provides you with now. Don't know about you, but mine costs $12,000. Now THERE'S a raw deal for ya. And sorry, "TAXED", but I have a hard time feeling sorry for somebody who makes your kind of money. Especially since you've been getting all kinds of tax breaks for the last 8 years that I haven't.

Facts About the Obama “Tax Refund”

On the stump and in debate, Senator Obama frequently trumpets that his economic plan would give 95 percent of all American workers a tax cut.

Here’s what this really means: Under Obama’s “Making Work Pay” plan, every worker would receive a $500 refundable tax credit, and every working couple would receive $1000.

Sounds good, right?

The key word here is “refundable.” According to the IRS, nearly one third of all tax filers– had zero tax liability after taking credits and deductions allowed by the IRS.

So what this really means is:

Under Obama’s proposal, these individuals - who have no tax liability - would receive a “tax cut” on taxes they never paid!

I understand but don't agree. I have visited Obama's website, and used his tax plan calculator. And under his plan I get $0 return, but have to pay more. I don't even make the $250 that he currently says is "rich". I am doing better then most in Maryland but it is about to get much worse. I will make considerably less after taxes then some people get making much less then my family does.

Taxed, I don't think you understood the information. Here's more from barackobama.com/taxes to clarify:
Middle class families will see their taxes cut – and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase. The typical middle class family will receive well over $1,000 in tax relief under the Obama plan, and will pay tax rates that are 20% lower than they faced under President Reagan. According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan. No Tax Increases for Families Making
Under $250,000. Obama has made a firm commitment not to raise any taxes for families making under $250,000(and individuals making under $200,000).

Obama is raising taxes to what was in the 1990's?? I don't get that reasoning......shouldn't he for a CHANGE decrease taxes from BUSH and CLINTON? So everyone is voting for Obama because he is going to do what happened in the 1990s? Because Bill Clinton did it? I thought it was about Change -- how is that change?

Amity Schlaes, Bloomberg News: "When the capital-gains rate is low, America feels like doing business. When the rate is high, the country turns its attention elsewhere. ... If a capital-gains rate increase alone, however, makes it into 2008 law, the U.S. economy will become less competitive compared with other economies at a crucial time. And if you don't mind me saying, that's a spread that can affect a lot of relationships." (Bloomberg.com)

Taxed, you are also wrong when you say that your money will "go to people who don't even pay taxes."
Fox News' Chris Wallace interview w/McCain 10/20/08:
WALLACE: You say that Obama's tax plan amounts to welfare because he'll give refundable tax credits — in effect, checks — to 40 percent of Americans who don't pay any income tax.
MCCAIN: Federal income tax, yes.
W: Obama points out that no one will receive one of these refundable checks if they aren't at least paying payroll taxes, Social Security taxes.
And your health care plan would also give these refundable checks to that same 40 percent who don't pay income taxes, federal income taxes. So if his plan is welfare, isn't yours?
M: Well, it's — the difference is that we need to provide — it's a fundamental requirement to give people the chance to have affordable and available health insurance, or the option is to go into a big government program such as we have in Canada, in England and others.

"Taxes" you are wrong about Obama's tax plan.
Families making more than $250,000 will pay either the same or lower tax rates than they paid in the 1990s. Obama will ask the wealthiest 2% of families to give back a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years to ensure we are restoring fairness and returning to fiscal responsibility. But no family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990s. In fact, dividend rates would be 39 percent lower than what President Bush proposed in his 2001 tax cut. source: barackobama.com

Palin's "experience far outweighs [Obama's] or any other Democratic candidate in the last few years"? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA! That's the most hysterically funny thing I've heard all day! Thanks for the laugh.

I live in a metro area of MD and make a combined income (husband and wife) of just over 200K. I would not consider myself rich!! Middle class yes, definitely not rich! Everyone now GASP!!

But in Maryland, House prices are on average about 600K, sales tax high, income tax high, and with all these taxes I am not rich!!!! With this Obama's tax plan I would be paying much more then I am currently am with "Bush's tax plan". I have no problem with paying the few bucks in taxes that supports public education, police, fire house, etc. But after that I don't want my money to go to people who don't even pay taxes. My taxes are already outrageous with Bush's plan I don't want them worse because Obama wants to share the wealth.

Yes She Can Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

Why don't people scrutinize Obama, the guy running for President, the way they scrutinize Palin for the VP? Her experience far outweighs his or any other Democratic candidate in the last few years (Edwards, H. Clinton).

Oh but boo who, she isn't Pro-choice, come on people. She is a conservative with dare I say it, conservative values. She isn't a horrible human being.

Change is inevitable...
