'Dirty Sexy Money': Please explain to me this Simon Elder!

Blairunderwooddsm_l Look, I love Dirty Sexy Money about as much as any network drama right now, and I love Blair Underwood, so terrific on In Treatment and The New Adventures of Old Christine in the last year. And yet, in the case of Underwood's role as enigmatic Russian entrepreneur Simon Elder on DSM, it's a case of two great tastes that do not, in fact, taste great together. Nothing about Simon's character makes sense. Not his motivations for playing a game of cat-and-catnip with Karen, a woman who could just as easily destroy him as give him the keys to destroy her family. Not his low-cut black shirt with the white embroidery and silver chains. (This is how a mogul dresses? Doubtful.) Even his driver's single leather glove struck me as a little iffy last night. Seriously, after this many episodes, shouldn't the audience have a little clarity about who this guy is, what his goals are, and whether or not he has any kind of real feelings for the most fabulous Darling (not to be confused with the "Darlingest Darling," as Nola called Nick) of them all?

Still, while Simon continues to vex me, I have to say I adored last night's Godfather-esque final shot: Nick entering a meeting with Tripp and trying to reassure a horrified Lisa, who ends up alone (and with a sinking feeling) in the hallway. Indeed, Tripp brought the menace last night, suggesting that Patrick use Ellen's eulogy as a way to advance his political career (nice use of Kenny G!), getting his kids to turn on each other in hopes of being named Vice Chair of Darling Enterprises, and best of all delivering that corker of a kiss-off to the family defense attorney: "I don't care how many shoddy heiresses you've returned from the gnawing jaws of justice to the safety of their infinity pools! You will not be defending my wife!" (The only zinger last night that made me howl harder was Jeremy's interjection about the entertainment for Ellen's service: "What about Elton John? He’ll play 'Candle in the Wind' for anyone!")

Anyhow, what did you think of last night's show? Is anyone else growing tired of Simon Elder? What about Nick taking Letitia's case and the spot at Tripp's right hand? And who's in favor of Nick and Lisa getting pregnant in the midst of their marital turmoil?

I too grow impatient, waiting for the Black Russian plot to really develop, but no way should Simon go. They just need to move things along with that plot line, as I'm sure Simon is deliciously devious. If they wait too long though, he may not live up to the smooth villainy I'm expecting.
Two unbearably dull characters are Lisa and Kiki. Does ANYTHING happen in their lives? Lisa's brush with Jeremy might have been hot if he could actually stay interested in such a moth. As for Jeremy, I'm irked by his affair with Nola, and utterly sick and tired of seeing Lucy Liu play that kind of role. When they introduced her character this season, I groaned inwardly. Could they pick a worse stereotype or cliche?
Brian! Hot. Can't get enough of him. Love his brooding, his rage, the endless grudges. He was actually perfect as a priest with all the contradictions. Matter of fact, I've known a few priests and seminary boys like him. Very credible.

Tish, not Trish

Simon is a frustrating sideline. Who is he trying to fool? Nick? Karen? Tripp? I don't want to be so unsure if he's good or bad. Did he kill Dutch/ Does he know who did (and why the heck did they blame Trish, of all people)? If he has nothing to do with it, let him go...and if Lisa has a kid, it will be as neglected as the girl they do have (who was seen once, maybe). Too bad I liked Juliet the best of the Darlings (and while i'm not surprised at the Jeremy/prosecutor affair...eww. nick defending his dad's alleged murderer...eww)

Lisa is boring, but she's supposed to be Nick's moral compass on the show. The thing is she just distracts us. I agree they have to cast another actress as Juliet and give Jeremy his twin. They could write better story lines for Jeremy if Juliet came back. I was surprised when Nick chose Brian to be the chair of the company, but it doesn't surprise me that Tripp chose Nick over his children to further cause drama between all them and show he is truly the one with the power. Yes, Simon Elder should go. Carmelita's back next week. Yay!

Someone commented that it was unrealistic for a prosecutor to engage in improper intimate contact with a family member of someone they are prosecuting. Ummm...public figures crash and burn all the time in this way, so I didn't find that unrealistic. As far as Nick and Lisa getting pregnant. She'll get pregnant with or without him I predict.

I can't stand the Simon subplot. I'm tired of figuring out his motive and don't really care what it is. I noticed his clothes and the silver chain too and thought it unlikely that he would appear in public like that. They need to bring Juliet back even if it's a different actress (don't think many would even notice another blonde in the role). The spoiled Paris Hilton type was a perfect fit for this family. I wish they would do more with Jeremy. Like him a lot but they need to flesh out his character a bit. And how far fetched is it that the a prosecuting attorney would risk her career and high profile case by sleeping with the defendant's son?! I loved the twists and turns in this episode though.

I think Simon Elder is boooring, but not as bad as Lisa. ugh. Please no weird baby storyline. I like the Jeremy/Lucy Liu storyline, but REALLY miss Carmelita - she was the bomb!

Kim in Kentucky-
The girl that plays Juliet has been in and out of rehab. So they will have her on the show for a few eps. around Jan. But they really need to give Jermey something more to do. BUT I love this show!

I actually appreciate Underwood's role its so absurd it works. And he thinks he's using her, she thinks she's using him. And yet, they're falling in love. Or are they? Agree about Brian. Best character on the show particularly when he was a cleric, can't believe they put the kabosh on it. The really need to get back to last year and Carmelita.

Jamie you read my mind. They need to get rid of Simon Elder and Lisa. Both are bland, useless characters. Last season Simon Elder wanted to take down the Darlings because of something with his father or whatever. Now I don't understand his purpose. They never showed when and why Patrick stopped assocating with him. Also Jeremy needs his twin. They need Juliet back. There is no way a guy like Jeremy would want boring girl like Lisa. Juliet would have talked him out of that. Also what is with Jeremy hooking up with women who are enemies of members of his family. Also when is Tripp going to get funny again? When is one of my fave characters..Brian going to finally recieve his due. When he went off on those cops for hassling his mom and pushing Nick, I cheered. Also Karen, the best Darling deserve more than being pimped by Tripp.

You're completely correct...Simon Elder's character is an enigma, and not a good one. I'd forgotten that he was "Russian"...I know Tripp needs and antagonist, but the part needs to be better defined.

Other than that, I love this show. I'm glad they threw Juliette away (on an island or something) She was a twit. I really like the way their pointing Brian...

LOVE THIS SHOW!!! One question, what has happened to Juliette? She was in last week's show - stating that she had been away using Karen's honeymoon trip - but not in the episode with her mother being arrested??

Love this show!! It deserves a TV Watch from Slezak!!

Jaime Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Ugh, just get rid of Lisa and Simon Elder already. For two characters with relatively little screen time they both manage to drag the show down.
