'Bones': Post-op Post-mortem

Oct 9, 2008, 09:49 AM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: 'Bones', About Last Night, Television

Lots of sticky wickets in last night's episode — which featured the murder of a hell-and-brimstone male televangelist turned post-op transsexual female pastor of a tiny congregation that welcomed all kinds — so where would we like to begin, Bones fans? The hour was rather lacking in any substantive Brennan-Booth 'shipper moments (except perhaps finding out that while Booth would like Brennan better as a man, Brennan would probably find Booth too pretty as a woman), which leaves us with only the issues. Anyone got anything profound to say about sexual orientation or religion? What about boating accidents and/or the importance of swimming with a buddy? On our newly developed Zack Replacement Scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being a brain in a jar and 10 being George Clooney, where would you put tonight's random-fact-filled but ultimately disposable intern, Mr. Nigel "Vino Delectable" Murray? And how much longer can the Murphy Brown-style rotating employee schtick stay fun?

It was my pleasure to visit your Website. I am also very Website you enjoy the article. And I also have the feeling that it was really a pity that we didn’t meet each other earlier. Because the kindness and warmth in your Website can make me completely relaxed and happy. I hope that you will visit my blog too to see if you can have the same feeling.http://www.buynikeshoes.com

I want them to bring back Michael Badalucco full time. He's been the best of the rotating interns so far.

Love Booth and Bones. Want more of Sweets. Totally confused about the whole Angela and Hodgkins breakup and what that's supposed to mean now. Tired of the rotating intern bit. AND WANT A WHOLE RECAP OF BONES--not just throwing us a bone with a paragraph!!

Sara Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

I liked the intern from the dog episode - the middle-aged guy who actually had a reason to know what he knew.

Dana Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

This is by far my favorite show on TV, don't like any of the interns so far although I did like Dr. Clark Edison though. If they don't use him I say bring Zach back in some capacity?

Binky Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

David Boreanaz is always at his best when his characters are horribly uncomfortable, embarrassed, or otherwise flustered.

Kirsten Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

I really enjoyed the episode, as I generally do when it deals with Booth's religion and Bones' lack of understanding of him. However, I have one big continuity complaint. When Bones and Booth were going over the amount of plastic surgery the victim had, Booth had to point out to her that people change their appearance that drastically to hide. But- wouldn't Bones already get that, since that's EXACTLY what her father did?? I love that Bones is getting more popular, but I hope they stay true to the characters and their backstories for those of us who've been along for the whole ride.

I'm not a fan of the intern rotation, but I did like Mr. Nigel. He and Cam had some great scenes. As did Sweets, he's great.
Good to see Hodgins outside the lab, though I agree that I really need more Hodgins/Angela scenes! And I want some "Let's inflate the skin of this head so it looks like it has a skull!" and "Let's chuck this pig into a wood chipper!" scenes! Just because Zack's gone doesn't mean we can't have fun in the lab, right?

Catherine Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

My only question is why Angela and Hodgins are not together anymore? I don't undertsand!!! WHY!!
I'm with you teepee, that Clark guy was nice!

Katie Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I the episode, but not dealing much with the Angela/Hodgins break up makes it seem even more pointless.

IndianaJenn Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Sorry- I hope they give Sweets & Hodgins more to do in future eps.

IndianaJenn Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

I laughed so hard at the "swim with a buddy" line! I hope they give Sweets 7 H

I actually kinda like the revolving intern bit. I always thought Zack was a little bit on the creepy side. Whatever happened to the one guy who was kind of a recurring lab technician? Dr. Clark Edison? (I just IMDB'd him...I swear I'm not that much of a Bones super-fan.) He was the best one - he should be the permanent replacement.

annie Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

I liked the episode, though there have been better. So far, I'm kinda iffy on this season.

And I agree - I want a full Bones TVWatch!!

Gretchen Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

Seriously, stop with these dumb paragraphs and give us a normal TV WATCH!!!!!!!!! Geez, we've been asking for weeks, what's the friggin deal?!

Jackie Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Dear David Gallagher,
Maybe you should stay away from any acting jobs having to do with religion? Just a thought. I mean, don't actors usually want to change up their image? The piercings weren't enough a change, man.
Sincerely,
Jackie

On another note - I did enjoy the episode, especially when Booth pointed out the glaring metaphor of Pat's death that was lost on Bones. And I kind of like the always-changing intern. Although I did thoroughly enjoy random-fact guy, I also liked the guy from a few eps ago that thought Bones wanted to sleep with him. And the depressed guy. Couldn't they make Sweets an intern? I want to see more of him!
And how are Angela and Hodges NOT awkward? They should totally play that up, or play up some left over sexual tension! Come on!

And couldn't there be King of the Labs with Cam or something? I LOVE her now.

Mandi Bierly Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Totally spotted David Gallagher from 7th Heaven (though admittedly, I had to look up his name). He's aging quite well. Good for him. Looks like he's been making the guest rounds (Saving Grace, CSI: Miami).

MSF Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

I always love this show, and appreciated the banter, as usual. But, I'd like to see Angela and Hodgins move forward and start working their way back together. I thought their breakup was not believable.

Stef Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

I appreciate that they allow Booth to have a faith without being an overly wacky 'church lady'.

jnorrix Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Bones has been a favorite in my family since it hit the air, but we all agree it has come down with a bad case of "Monk disease" this season.

When the show was at its best, Booth was tormented by his past and struggling to reconcile his guilt with his sense of duty. Brennan was a savant struggling to become a more functional human.

Now Booth is a fool and a foil, and Brennan is a parody of the socially dysfunctional. Their humanity and depth have been stripped away because the possibility that they may grow and change is seen as a threat to the success of the show.

Just as the producers of Monk have trapped their character in his "defective detective" persona because it's "what the viewers want", the producers of Bones have retreated to a cartoon view of their characters that doesn't serve the show, the actors, or the audience.

Nicole Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Ok, did anyone else notice the son was the kid from 7th heaven and his dad was a preacher. Just thought that was funny.

MK Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Yeah, the rotating intern schtick is already not fun. I'll confess that for some unknown reason it's making me irrationally upset, but even under normal circumstances, I think I'd be ready for a more permanent staff member.

Jackie Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Miss the more detailed "Bones" recaps, but still happy to see one here at all :o)

In spite of what Hodgins said in last night's episode, I still think they're going to find a way to bring Zach back. I know people didn't like the way they brought him in a couple of weeks ago, but I was so unhappy with what they did with his character at the end of last season that I was kind of over the moon about seeing him on it again. In any case, I don't think they would keep talking about his character in EVERY episode if they weren't planning on bringing him back in. Plus, the fact that they keep going through assistants "Murphy Brown" style just shows how much no one can replace him.

10lbMoustache Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

The episode really just hit the wall with the yeah we get it now lets move on soon part of the series, in my opinion. Its still fun of course but the Zach replacement is still going on and it got really dry last night with Mr. Nigel. At least the preview for next seasons episode looks amazing. Bones' father returns and is bringing up whats with Booth not making a move...I Like.
