'CSI' season premiere: Goodbye, Warrick Brown!

Oct 10, 2008, 08:56 AM | by Lynette Rice

Categories: About Last Night, Television

Csi_lThe cynics among us would probably argue that dogged TV reporters have taken away the element of surprise that used to come with CSI. Thanks to our own scooperman Mike Ausiello, we already knew that Gary Dourdan's Warrick Brown was going to be history long before his departure finally played out in last night's season premiere, or that Jorja Fox would briefly reprise her role as Sara Sidle in preparation for Billy Petersen's much-anticipated exit as Gil Grissom. But those cynics would be wrong. There was no way to foretell how much Gil's anguish over Warrick's death would truly move us, or whether the sight of him clutching his runaway fiancee (where you been, Sara?) would give us hope that these two complicated souls might just see better days ahead. Cut the crap, Emmy voters -- what more does this show have to do to get your damn respect?

But I digress; we're here to talk about last night's premiere. Though stricken with grief over the death of one of their own, the team and Capt. Brass promise to get "all hands on deck" to solve this mystery -- all except the coroner, Dr. Al Robbins (the sorely underappreciated Robert David Hall) who announces that he's "asked the day shift to handle this one" before turning away from the sight of Warrick's body. Crack investigative work by Nick and Catherine inside Warrick's car (they follow the clues to a tiny print on a bullet!) lead the team to believe that the under sheriff, not the previously suspected Officer Pritchard, was the one who really pulled the trigger. Just like that, our fearless heroes had found their man.

But the whodunnit part is not the main reason you tuned in, right? I came to see the first of Petersen's final eight episodes as a series regular (I'm already thinking this show can't survive without him -- and the dude's not even gone yet) and to check out how Fox's Sara would return to the man and job she abandoned last year. I choked up at the sight of those two embracing, and let out an audible gasp when I saw them cuddling in bed (!!!) during the scenes from next week's episode. But it was George Eads -- who looked so crestfallen at the funeral -- who really broke my heart (uttered a great, Godfather shout-out, too, when he was snooping through Warrick's car: "Leave the gun, take the cannoli. This was a hit!" I sure dig those CSI writers).

What did you think? Did you shed a tear or two over the final sight of the beautiful (and obviously tortured, if you've been reading the headlines) Gary Dourdan? Were you thrilled to see Fox back in action? Are you already dreading Petersen's departure? Let it all out, fans: Gil and his team certainly did.

Yes, I did shed a tear, even more than one tear; it was so tragic, how they let him die. And because I loved the character Warrick Brown. He was really special and I must admit, he was the main reason for watching the series. I will miss him tremendously.
Good luck Gary Dourdan. I hope it was the right decision...

While I wasn't surprised that they killed Warrick in the show considering the headlines that most have probed to find out, I am disappointed and rather unenthusiastic about the upcoming episodes being shy Warrick, Gil and Sara. I don't see this show picking up any without them as they were the main reasons I watched the show. I will say that I will wish both Mr. Petersen and Mr. Dourdan good luck with their future careers, but as for the future of this show... I don't foresee much.

Alice Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

this was the saddest, most beautiful episode ever from CSI, personally. if WP doesn't win a Emmy for his performance, something's REALLY wrong.

sophna Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

you idiot author, you talk about reporters spoiling and now you spoil grissoms exit for me. i bet deep down it makes you happy...not all of us are news freaks

kimb Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

Warrick was the only one worth watching on that show!! No more CSI for me.

Carosa Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 04:57 AM EST

I LOVE GARY DOURDAN WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE!!!!!

wally Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

I haven’t watch .C.S.I since the first 10 minutes of the new shows, I didn’t think one person could effect my opinion of a show but it did especially the way they killed Warrick off. Im hoping maybe he’s in some kind of protective custody .well at least I still have criminal minds and ncis.

Kathy Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 06:05 AM EST

I love the episode of warrick death but was very disappointed also. I don't think he should have been killed off. I think he should have left as sara did so that he could come back as a guest star once in awhile. If bill petersen leaves too, I don't know how much I'll watch they show as gil and warrick were 2 of the best actors on the show and it won't be the same without them. I love all the actors on the show but to take those 2 main characters away would ruin the show in my opionion. I hope cbs rethinks this idea.

Rida Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

Oke, so I watched the episode after where Warrick died. I felt strange, lik it was just half a CSI I was watching. It missed something and it felt rushed and fake. I mean, usually in CSI Vegas the plot is good and things are puzzled into place, so it is believable. But this time everything just fell into place: there was little detectivework and in both cases the suspects just tell everything. I really did miss Warrick in this, the team did not feel like the team anymore. So if Grissom leaves, I will have to say:bye bye CSI. At least CBS still has NCIS :)

Karen Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

I was so upset that Warrick died, I cried for most of the show, all the actors did a wonderful job, Jorga is a great actor, but I find her a bit strange. George is lovely too and William Peterson, wonderful. I am from Australia and don't know all the news most on this site would know, but I really love this actor/character and will miss him. I can't believe how upset I was and still am about it. But I'll still watch the show and Miami. K

Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

I was totally shocked since I don't watch the news or read anything prior to watching CSI episodes. I still like to be surprised. I will tell you that Gary "Warrick" was a key player and the last two episodes haven't been the same. I do not like the new character on this last episode. This show is going to go downhill fast. They can't bring back "Warrick Brown" without some stupid episode like when the brought back Bobby in Dallas. I realize it was a good episode, but what was the head honcho's thinking about killing off his character? Bad decision all around especially financially. You will be missed Gary "Warrick Brown"!

Rida Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

I've seen the last episode just now. It was soooo sad I had trouble holding back the tears. I hoped that Warrick would still be alive. I just realized that I actually feel real grieve for Warrick, as if I known him for real (Yes, I do realize it's just a fictional character). But for me CSI was all about him and Grissom. They kept the show so real, especially Warrick with all of his struggles. Grissom always looks out for his "family". That is what I like about CSI. But now Warrick's dead and Griss will soon be leaving, I don't really want to watch the show anymore. I hope Gary Dourdan kicks the habit and will be doing well in his career again and real soon. LOVE those EYES of him!!

~L~ Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

I've watched CSI Vegas and Miami from day one. (I don't like CSI NY) Although I've loved the entire cast of the Vegas series, Gary Dourdan was the main reason I continued to watch it. I have not watched it since Warrick's death and I do not plan to. As great of an actor as Fishbourne is, he's not enough to keep me as a viewer. Grissom is leaving also, so what is the point? Eventhough Dourdan decided not to renew his contract long before he was busted they could have came up with a better way for him to depart. The episode was very moving though. The part that really got to me was when they showed Warrick's baby at the funeral. Well as I said, I'm done with the Vegas series. I'll keep watching Miami. I just hope Gary Dourdan kicks his bad habits so he can return to tv on another show.

FRANCES Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Best show in a long time.I did cry like a big baby. Will miss Warrick.Hearing that Grissom is leaving, guess I will leave to.

Abigail Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

I'm done with CIS! I give credit to all the other actors but Gary was the only reason I got hooked. His character was believable, complicated, and imperfect. Gonna focus my energies on watching "House" now!

Melanie Edwards Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

I love this show and give up my boyfriend to watch it. My mom & I watch this & love all of the chracters especially William Peterson. I remember him from a movie where he was serious one minute & very funny the next with very tight jeans. I have always liked him.
But the team, William, Marg, George, Warrick, and the detective and the young guy & especially the coroner all make the show what it is. I was hoping that Gary was not really dead, that he ws in the hospital and it was a farce ,to catch the killer. Why is he gone? Is it the drug trouble I read about a few months ago? If so that could have been turned into a postive and helped viewers of all ages to get it under control. If any of the otehrs leave and especialy Peterson, whom I have adored since I saw him in a movie about his ex wife getting married and their daughter being upset about it They are all verstile actors and I hate to see the show go down. Please bring GARY BACK!

florence Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 03:13 AM EST

very sad. will miss Gary so much he is a wonderful actor.I was happy to see Jorja back she is such an expressive actress.

Ashley Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

this episode was soo sadd! i cried through pretty much the whole episode. i completly lost it when nick started cryingg. if grissom leaves too the only reason i will watch is cuz of nick<33!

tgw Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

I too think Nick (George Eads) did a great job...I was floored and moved by his emotion and the angst he showed during this episode...I honestly thought I was going to get through without a tear shed...but that funeral scene ...when Nick's chin quivered and that tear ran down his cheek and Catherine reached over and took his hand...my heart broke...I cried.I really wish CBS would appreciate these two characters and Gregg too and what about Brass?...that man is funny!I know Grissom was the main character but he has chose to leave...nobody is forcing him to go...and still in my heart if he really loved the show and he wanted it to succeed then why is he leaving now? Waiting a year so the fans could actually move past Warrick and Sara's departures then I could see it ....I am so afraid this will be the end to such a great series...especially since there is only focus on the bad and not the good...there are some great actors left and I wish CBS would realize this!

karen Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

I cried. I love Gary Dourdin...he is sooo sexy and those eyes!!! I thought that the whole cast did a great job. I am sad that GD left the show. Didn't they announce that he was leaving before he was busted? I thought that they did. I hope that he is dealing with his demons and will be healthy soon. Would love to see him on other shows or projects!!

Alice Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

That was a pretty amazing episode wasn't it. I completely agree with your review, it was moving when i didnt expect it to be, and the performances by the actors were spot on, none of them overacted, which seem to be a line frequently crossed on the other csis. William Petersen was breathtaking through out the episode, but especially, as many agrees, at the funeral scene. he delivered the line "i'm gonna miss him so much" to perfection. WAKE UP EMMY VOTERS! please!!I'm glad the season is off to such an great start, after a somewhat lacking 8th season. i hope they continue their high quality, as, whether i want to or not, i am bound to lose considerable interest after the departure of Grissom

Chris Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Allright the best CSI is going downhill fast the chemistry and plain old good actors was key and now we're loosing the man himself Grissom !!! I've been hooked since day one and now I'm dreading what will come. Bottom line think of the horrible acting Horatio does I wish him dead last year only to have him return and Warrick died...At least NY actors are still strong but I'll miss Grissom and Warrick and yes Sarah didn't kill the show but....

Laura L Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Your article was right on. Dead right on (pun intended). Yes, even though I knew Warrick was going to die, I NEVER dreamed it would hit me as hard as it did. I cried when he died in Gil's arms. I cried when Catherine came in to the scene and Nick just slightly shook his head and then "she knew" and I cried even harder. I cried when Gil and Sarah clung to each other. The whole episode was moving. Start to finish. I am glad that they caught the under sherif in one episode. I wasn't sure how they were going to handle it. Billy Peterson is my favorite character on this show and, like you... I am already dreading his leaving and I too don't think the show is going to survive THAT hit!! I will watch it but for how long, I don't know. All good things must come to an end. This ending sucks!

lauren Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Warrick.... You WILL be missed... Guess it's back to Horacio!! I would have given Sara S. for Warrick to stay any day! If you ask me she should have died under the red mustang in the miniture case and Warrick should have been in a coma only to awaken when Grissom leaves the show. At least you have some regularity that way. They will pretty much have a whole new cast!! Sooooooo sad to see those BEAUTIFUL eyes gone!!

byline Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

I thought this was a great episode. The middle didn't engage me as much as I would've thought, but the bookends at the beginning and end were some of the best acting I've seen from these actors on this series . . . and that's saying a lot, given the stellar performances they've all turned in. The funeral was the most heartbreaking of all, and Petersen's performance during the eulogy was very moving. Very different from the norm for that character, but perfectly appropriate given the circumstances. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

The only "false note" for me was the graveyard shift handling this case involving a member of their own team. No way in real life that would've happened, but dramatically there really was no other way to go.

Lena Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

The writers and ACTORS did a great job in this episode. It's just sad, we have to see one of the talented actors leave. With Warrick or anyone leaving, it's like missing an important part of your body. Any character being gone from the original CSI cast will seem empty. But to comment on the writers/actors, this was a believable episode. All emotions clearly presented itself....Lasty, Gary Dourdan will truely be missed.

Fran Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

I'm going to miss the chemistry that Warrick and Catherine have. And George Eads is good-looking, but Gary Dourdan as eye-candy is going to be missed for sure.

LC Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I had no idea they were going to kill off Grissom till now. Why not just decapitate the entire cast on live TV? That would get more ratings than post Grissom CSI. Oh well, the only reason I even found this show was because it's on after "Survior" and I left the TV on by accident. Guess I'll just get an extra hours sleep on Thursdays. My God, this is just more proof that TV is dead. Let's just kill it now like the sick, dying dog it is and be done with it. Sure, FIDO was gave us a good run but now he's to old to get up and use the toilet so the best thing we can do is simply put him to rest. It's a mercy thing.

martine Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I loved this episode, i kept rewinding it on my tivo, to where catherine walks down the alley, it was believable, especially Grissom who was amazing, i cried loads!!! hope the show carries the same momentum when Grissom leaves.....

CARLA MARIA BOYD Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

I don't want Gorja to go. I want to see Gorgja and Petersen become involoved. We need something like that in this show. Real-life romance, just like real-life investigations. They go hand-in-hand. The writers can contact me if they need help writing. I would just love to have input. I am a born writer. Give me two words, I will give you a chapter

CARLA MARIA BOYD Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

I am an AVID CSI watcher. I love both Vegas and Miami. I don't see how the show could survive without Grissom. I wish they wouldn't even try it. It is going to be equally hard to see Warwick gone, being the only black investigator. We love to see us on TV. Petersen has been one of my favorites since Manhunter. Why mess with a good thing?

Stacie Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

Excellent acting by the very talented cast.also
I'm so happy that Jorja Fox was back becuse I think she's a great actress.

Billie Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 06:52 AM EST

I hate what has happened, I loved Warrick I think the hole thing is sick. Now Grissom is going to leave...Do I even want to watch the show anymore? I dont know...I hope the writers come up with something really good cause Its going to need it. OH but I am glad that Sarah is back tho!!!!!

Michelle Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

I thought it was great. Catherine actually made the episode for me though, much more than Grissom. Her grief seemed almost startlingly real. I cried the first time when she walked down the alley at the beginning and she kept me caught throughout. I'm going to miss Warrick a lot. I thought it would be easy because I was fine with Sara leaving (and while I was glad she came back for her friend's funeral, I wasn't glad to see her for the whole episode. Stay gone please) but when I cried at the funeral scene I realized adjusting to Warrick being gone is going to be a lot harder. I liked Warrick a lot and I'm glad he got a great episode to go out on.

smile60 Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

I also didn't like the idea that the death of one police demands the resources of the entire department...and I found it very unbelievable that they solved the crime so quickly.

Portia, I work in a level one trauma centre. I can tell you that when an officer is shot, the entire department, not precinct, but department is out hunting for the person that committed the act. yes my dear, they do pour all resources into finding these cop killers.

Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:14 PM EST

I was actually hoping for a lot more than I got. They could've got a whole lot of mileage from that storyline. With all the emotions and complications of the involvement of someone in the department, they could've continued with other cases, with Warrick's continually in the background. I hope they continue to keep the emotion of it in the storyline... maybe some feelings of guilt by the team thinking they could've done something to prevent it, or just references to Warrick's character.

Katie Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

It could've easily been a 2 hour premiere or multi-episode send-off for Warrick. Way too predictable and tied up too easily in a bow. Would've liked to have seen a little more, but not a bad episode overall. It was well acted.

smile60 Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

Did I shed a tear or two? No. I bawled like a child that had just lost their sibling. I cried so much I had to watch it again on the internet to make sure I did not miss anything. Well, I cried again. How moving was this episode. It gripped my heart. My children had to constantly remind me that it was just a television show. I will miss his part on the show as I will miss Petersens'. I swore that I would never watch CSI again one Grissom is gone, that is until I learned that Lawrence fishbourns will be addedto the cast. That certainly will put a new spin on the series.

CES Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

The saddest show yet! I have been watching this show since the beginning and Warrick will be greatly missed. Nice to see Sara back, but I never liked her with Gil (no chemistry there). Always thought he would have been better with Sophia. (What ever happened to her?) Not sure I like choice of Laurence Fishborne as a replacement for William Peterson, but I'm willing to see how they develope his character. I can't write the show off yet there's still hotty Nick, Catherine and Greg to keep me faithfull.

Samantha Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

The episode was so sad. I had to have a box of Kleenex ready. I'd rather that Sara not come back and cry crocodile tears over Warrick, whom she tried to have fired in the beginning and resented his friendship with Grissom for ages.

That said, I completely disagree with Gloria Nickles. Why should someone abusing drugs and alcohol get a second or more chances? Lost doesn't allow it. Look at Michelle Rodriguez and Daniel Dae Kim. Both were killed off Lost because they were caught with a DUI in Hawaii.

How do we know that Gary hadn't already had some chances and blew them? We have no idea what led up to him not renewing his contract. All e know is that in the past year, Gary has been having some issues that might have come about because of drug and alcohol abuse. Maybe it was Gary who actually wanted out, because he'd been doing series television playing the same character for 8 years.

We don't know the whole story here. Until we do, we have no idea what to believe.

alice Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

it was such an amazing episode!!an awesome performance by WP

Vicki Loudermilk Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

I totally agree woth the comments made by Gloria Nickles. CSI will never be the same. Gary deserves another chance just like all the other actors. Bring him back or I promise you the CSI ratings will go way down.

Vicki Loudermilk Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

I will never watch the new csi shows. Killing off Warrick was the biggest mistake they could have made. They have just lost one of thier viewers.

Becky Hausler Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

Lame storyline on the solving of the death of Warrick. I agree with some folks that Gary Dourdan should have been given a chance to rehab. If anyone thinks that CSI without Peterson will continue to fly they need their head examined. Puleez! Laurence Fishburne does not have the presence and the elegance of Peterson. He has the charisma of a dead mackeral. Adios from an ex-fan.

Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Here's my two cents' worth: I really like Jorja Fox, but this wasn't her best episode (not that it was really her time to shine, anyway). I love Billy Petersen, but the emotion would have been more real (during the hug, the funeral, or holding Warrick) if the man had been actually able to CRY. I thought Marg and George did a much better job showing really deep emotion than did either Jorja or Billy. I thought Dourdan did a fine job at dying, and I will really miss his character. I wish him the best. As for the episode overall -- it was kind of predictable, not one of CSI's best. But it accomplished what it set out to do: give us a gut-wrenching, sad episode that let viewers see how much the original team hangs together. I hope the show can be as strong losing three of its top crew; I have my doubts even though I'm rooting for them all. Nice to see Hodges and Wendy sitting together...I think there is potential there. Hall and Vann and Guilfoyle were great, too.

Donn Kizzee Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

I have been a fan of CSI Miami more than i have been of the Las vegas version. I must say however that this was beautifully written and well acted all around. My compliments to the entire ensemble for a very well done send off gor Gary Dourdan

Jenna Isaac Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

I cried soooo hard and I'm only 11 okay and I wore black to school the next day!!!! I cried so hard that my eyes almost fell out when the funeral was happening. I love the eppy. Bravo to the cast!!! *Claps*

chuck s. Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Even with the death of Warrick and last of Grissom, CSI, with great writing and acting can and will survive like other shows have in the past after major characters have left (ER for example..in its 15th season and sadly its last). Of course some great shows just die when major characters leave (Desigming Women). I believe CSI will be just fine.

Leaving Las Vegas Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

I did not forget Holly Gibbs, the CSI who was murdered in the first episode while Warrick was screwing around gambling or something. That was Warrick, not Dourdan. The Warrick Brown character was played out beautifully and was redeemed because of the Grissom character. The Warrick Brown character was intelligent, skillful, and compassionate - as are all of the CSI's (and as is Gary Dourdan). Gil Grisson believed in Warrick and he was not fired. The only bad thing about that episode was it introduced us to Jorja Fox and Sarah Sidle. Ugh.

Leaving Las Vegas Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I'm done. The characters of Warrick Brown and Gil Grissom define this program. 'Miami' and 'New York' don't hold a candle to the superior 'Las Vegas' ensemble. I have been there from the very beginning, based on Peterson's riveting performance in "Manhunter". Killing off Warrick was only the latest in a series of turn-offs and dumb moves. Hiring Jorja Fox was the first dumb move, letting her stay was the second. Keeping her after the salary debacle was the third. Killing off Dourdan's character, and bringing Fox back to desecrate Dourdan's memory is the last straw.

Not even Lawrence Fishburn can breathe life into this puppy.

jen Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

as interesting as their cases have been, this show rides on its characters' relationships. it will never be the same for me without warrick, but especially grissom. even sara leaving last year was enough to get me to turn the tv off. this show is sadly done... at least for me.

Lene Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

It was great to see everyone get a chance to stretch their acting muscles a bit more than the format of the show normally allows. Not going to miss Warrick - he's bored me for years, but hope Dourdan gets good help. CSI won't be the same without Grissom. I get that Petersen wants to do other things, would love to stay with the show after he's gone, but am not sure I can. He's my favourite character, pulls the whole team together.

Cathy Tockstein Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Great eposide. Where was Lindsey? When Gil and Sara leave Las Vegas do you think they will try to get custody of Warrick's son to raise him as their own child?

Gloria Nickles Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

I think it's terrible to remove such a good actor due to an episode of misconduct and mistake of becoming involved with drugs. There are hundreds of other actors that have had several incidents with drugs, alcohol, sex, and they are still on their shows!!! Gary was my favorite character on the show, and with him gone, Peterson leaving, Fox gone, it can't possibly be the same CSI!!! I was very disappointed that they didn't let Gary be in the hospital for awhile, rehab., and then come back to the show after he has finished his rehab for drugs!!!

Cameron Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I cried when Sara went around and hugged all the mourning CSI's, and at the funeral scene during Gil's speech. The actual plot, with McKeen and whatever, was weak and didn't do Warrick's death justice though. Amazing acting though, as usual.

Tyler Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

If I just arrived from Venus, (where women are from), and didn't know any better, I would swear that I was reading reviews of some WE or Lifetime for Women episode.
Yes the episode was very emotional and sad, and the acting by all was admittedly excellent, but let's not forget the plot. The plot was actualy quite weak. Why did the under sheriff even acknowledge he was around the scene.
Was it to go out of his way to have the CSI's have an obvious suspect when the "leads" that he gave were exposed as falsehoods? I have to think, as a few have mentioned, that the under sheriff would be smarter than that.
Oh, well, maybe it doesn't matter and I'm being a kill joy. I guess the point was to show grief of the CSI's. But I look to TV shows for their content and plotlines, and this episode fell short in those areas.
Also, this won't make me popular I'm sure, but has everyone forgot how badly Warrick screwed up with Holly Gribbs? He would have been fired for derilection of duty period!

LYNNE Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

>>Yes, I cried. Especially the look on Warrick's face when he saw his shooter standing over Grissom. Oh a wonderful job by Dourdan. i hope another show comes his way.>>

IF he can succeed at drug rehab...this fine actor WILL be on television again for sure.

SuperDave Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

Great episode last night. Gary Dourdan will be missed. But, to me, this show is done when Billy Peterson leaves. He IS CSI. I won't watch it without him.

nini72 Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

cried from the stsrt until the end. will miss warrick and gil but will give the new characters a try.

JBrennan Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 02:08 AM EST

I loved the show. I gave up going out to eat so I could make sure that I could watch it. I cried from beginning to end. William Peterson and the rest gave some of their best performances. I was glad that Nick did not actually shoot McKeen. It is always hard to see beloved cast members leave a hit show. I congratulate the writers for giving Warick Brown and Gary Dourdan a wonderful exit. I hope to see Dourdan in the future in another show. I also have to agree with some of the other posters as to Marg Helgenberger's character. They should have given her more opportunity to show her feelings. I always felt that she and Warick could have had something special.

Alice Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

wonderful to see Sarah again.Great story telling and wonderful acting by all involved in my opinion.

lucia Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

I loved the eppy - the human part, that is. The investigative part wasn't that bright (McKeen was the dumbest criminal I've ever seen!). I loved Grissom's eulogy at the funeral, I loved Sara coming back as well as her and Griss's scenes, and her and Greg's scene. I wish we had gotten to see more of Cath's reaction, if there was time for Cath!Drama, this was it (and why wasn't Lindsay at the funeral as well?. I loved averybody else's reaction and acting. They ALL deserve an Emmy.

I don't think it will be the same after Grissom goes. As someone said in an article, Grissom and Sara were the science geeks, the ones who made the show be cool and realistic. Now their replacements are too gimmicky characters, I don't think it will be that good after Grissom goes.

Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

I was so hurt. I don't know what CSI is going to be like now. I am at a lost for words. It seems like everyone is leaving the show. I don't know if I am going to be interested in it anymore.

Troy Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 11:41 PM EST

Funeral scenes do me in... and this was no exception. The writers and actors handled everything surrounding Warrick's death so well that I actually feel really bad about skipping 5 or 6 episode from last season. My only nit pick would be that they should've given Catherine some more dramatic scenes as since very early on they've hinted at a 'thing' between Warrick and her - a special connection. Other than that, it was television at it's finest.

Mary in Dallas Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

Very sad episode, especially when Warrick died in Gil's arms. I was hoping he was still secretly alive and they had faked his death in order to smoke out the killer, but of course that would have been too soap opera-ish... I'll miss Gary Dourdan!

I never liked the character of Sara Sidle but it was kind of nice to see her back to help with the funeral, etc. And her hairstyle looks way better than before. :)

Rabbit Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

*That should have been "AND the characters are so well defined....."

Rabbit Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

As one who has watched CSI since it's inception and immersed myself in the characters I felt their pain with the loss of 'Warrick'. My daughter just looks at me and mutters that it's 'just a tv show' but these characters have become like family. Once 'Gil' leaves it's going to be even harder to watch. I'll always be waiting more to see who else we will lose to the fates. This show is well written but the characters after so many seasons were so well defined and believable (except for Sarah wandering in the desert). *sigh* Lawrence Fishburne has got a tremendous task ahead of him.

Jo Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

No tears shed for Warrick, felt mostly meh about Sara's return and although I'll miss Grissom, I'm looking forward to Laurence Fishburne. The best part of this episode was seeing Brass in something other than a suit and tie. Paul Guilfoyle needs to show off what he's got a whole lot more because what he's got looked mighty fine!

Sandra Mullen Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

First, George Eads character,Nick broke down at the funeral did me in, as did the last line Grissom said at the funeral,"We're going to miss him". Otherwise, it was business as usual for the CSIs.I truly loved the "Godfather" line about losing the gun, keep the cannoli (or vice-versa).William Peterson will be missed immensely but all long-term shows lose and gain actors and the shows continue to grow. We'll have to see if its the same for CSI.

Hilary Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

Oh my god, I could not stop crying for the first ten or so minutes of the show. Catherine's face when she saw Warrick's body just got to me. Hello, tears city! Then the end, with Grissom's eulogy, again, the tears.

I don't think the show will go well without Peterson, but I'll still be watching.

liza Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

I was glad to see Sara back, she was always a favorite of mine. A briliant episode, william petersen was amazing.

Kelsey D Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

I am broken hearted. Gary is off the show. That hotty made most of the show for me. I will watch but I might not keep watching.

liza Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

I was glad to see Sara back, she was always one of my favorites, this was a briliant episode. william Petersen was amazing.

Dory Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

Last night's episode was really good. Heartbreaking, but good. I thought the cast displayed some amazing performances, especially Billy Peterson and George Eads. I really hope Nick gets some good storylines this year.

Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

I think the episode was AWFUL! I can't believe they killed off beautiful Warrick Brown! I not only deleted the episode off my dvr, I deleted CSI off my future recordings. I still love Nick, but I'm done with the new CSIs. Horrid to kill off one of the BEST characters.

janetlee Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

PS-Doctor Robbins looked literally ill. Is the actor playing him okay?

janetlee Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

They killed off Warrick Brown and Gil's going to be off the show by mid-season. It's just wrong. I will watch and give the show a chance, but I am very skeptical. Gary Dourdan's death scene was awesome. At least he went with a mind-boggling performance! I felt almost like I was watching him die for real! So good! And WP is so under-appreciated. He is an amazing actor and as far as I'm concerned is the best looking man on the show...even more sexy than Gary!
I wish they'd make this episode one of those "bad dream" episodes where one of them was only dreaming and Warrick is all right, but it ain't gonna happen. It'll be awful when CSI is over.

Vujahday Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

Very intense, gut-wrenching episode, with totally 'believable' acting. Perhaps a tad coincidental that the bad guy' is named McKeen?

pinkpanda Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

Oh my god i loved this episode but it was so sad and it also makes me want to tune in next week

bruno Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

ORRR, you know, maybe ausiello could just keep his mouth shut and we'd all get to enjoy the surprises our favorite shows try to throw at us a whole lot more. i'd much rather be stunned watching an episode of my favorite show surprise me than read it from some nim wit beforehand....

Carrie Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

I made the mistake of watching the episode again On Demand when I got home from work this evening. Cried like a baby. Again. I'm a little surprised they nabbed McKeen so quick. I'm still thinking he'll be back to be a thorn in our guys sides before WP leaves the show. A few brief comments...
1) Was anyone else waffling between wanting Nick to kill McKeen and to NOT kill him? There are spoilers out that Nick will be seeing Warrick in different places so I'm guessing he's riddled with guilt over his actions.
2) Anyone notice Hodges & Wendy sitting next to each other at the funeral? So sweet! TPTB need to finally get those two together!
3) Between Warrick dying in his arms, the DVD where it was obvious Warrick wished Gil had been his dad *eye roll*, Sara coming back and the eulogy, I think WP got too many moments in this episode. Yes, I know Gil/WP is "the star" but it seemed way too self-serving. Catherine should've gotten another moment and Marg sure as hell deserved one.

CJ Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

I love CSI it is one of the best shows I think on TV right now. I was hoping they would not kill off Warrick's character. And without Grisson on the show it will be awful! Nick is a good actor and hopefully he will not leave. But I know anything possible with televison they can resurrect Warrick if they want too. I think when the Anchors like Grisson leave a show it is never the same. What he brings to CSI will never be the same without him. Other networks have tried it, but their shows were never the same without the main characters, You lose a lot of your ratings. There personal acting is what makes the movie great! They should have learned that lesson when Grisson was on hiatus. The new guy was a good actor, but he was a crook and for sure he could not have replaced William Peterson. I will miss Dourdan and Peterson. The ep was done very well and I cried through the show. I think Catherine is the one they should have let go!

BJohnson Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

I'd like to thank the CSI writers for not dragging this into two or three episodes. I was glad Sara came back and it didn't matter where she was. Last season showed Grissom getting a call from her at the end (never said her name or anything) but you knew he was aware of where she was.
Yes, I cried. Especially the look on Warrick's face when he saw his shooter standing over Grissom. Oh a wonderful job by Dourdan. i hope another show comes his way. Yes I'm glad the under sheriff didn't die, I want him to rot in jail. I guess that was Warrick's child, was that his ex wife? Someone needs to help me with that one. I will be sad when Grissom leaves, I'll cry again.

Mila Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

Yes we cried. All my family cried. I personally think WP deserves an award for his performance. It was a great episode. Grissom was vulnerable for the first time. His connection with Sara, his lover, was presesnt and I don"t Know why people said they have no chemistry. They are great as a couple. I loved the episode, but when WP leaves, there is no more CSI for me.

James T. Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

After last nights episode, I began to wonder what drama series has been better in the history of television? E.R., the Wire? CSI proved if its not the best its certainly up there. There is nothing else like it on television.

Katie Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

The premiere was definitely emotional, I'll give it that. William Petersen was amazing, especially at the beginning when he kept on repeating "oh". Just that one simple word conveyed so much more than what we're used to seeing with this character. Catherine walking down the alley, seeing Warrick being covered, was heart breaking. Marg did a great job. I wish we had seen Grissom and Catherine comfort each other even a little (like they would have once upon a time when they were still tight), but I realize they ep. could only be so long, and the look they shared at the crime scene was enough, I suppose. The funeral scene was really bittersweet, I loved seeing the team all together. Not even the return of Sara (ew!) and GSR (double ew!) could ruin it. It was fitting that she return for Warrick's death, but hopefully they'll leave it at that. I hope to dear god that they don't ruin Billy's last few episodes by keeping around the contrived and gag-worthy romance of Grissom and Sara.

Ame Davila Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

I cried so hard, it was so real, I could not believe that CI Brown is gone. CSI is my favorite television program and specially because Gil is a Chicago Native. I love all the characters. They project such an image of true Crime Scene Investigator. If I had my career to do over, that would be the field of choice. Now, I record in case I do not make it home on time. I hope that by CI Brown exiting the show, means that he is coming back with his own TV program. He has the makings of a leading man and I hope he is given the opportunity. On another note, I am an avid reader of author James Patterson and one of his story characters is Alex Cross; Gary Dourdan is the perfect Alex Cross, one minor detail is that the hair has to go. Otherwise Gary you are the Alex Cross. Often, I have sent Mr. Patterson, opinions on any number of his books via email and the one topic is bringing the Alex Cross series to television and the one actor to play the character is Gary Dourdan.

AnnaSophia Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

It's a fantastic episode. I loved how the whole team got together to support each other and to solve their friend's murder. I missed Sara and was so happy to see her back. The show will never be the same without them.

Amanda Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

I bawled through the entire episode. I was waiting for him to be okay, or comatose or something...not kill him!!! They should have killed off Sarah not Warrick...but I guess this opens up to Grissom's departure. How very very sad.

maria Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I have been watching CSI since the beginning. I was hoping
Nick 'accidentally' shot and killed McKeen. Hope to find out what happens to him later. I was really sad to see Warrick go and I am a little worried how the show will be without Grissom too. But oh well I'll still watch!! All my family knows that on Thursday nights it's 'CSI' time so I don't leave the couch until it's over! bye :->

eljay Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Sorry, I meant to say Lawrence Fishburne.

eljay Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

A few years ago, there was a scene in CSI where Gil entered a closet where an old lady had died after being locked in and essentially abandoned. He stood there and imagined what that woman had gone through as she desperately tried to get out, as her only light source died, as her cries went unheard, and as she eventually lay down and died. Peterson lived those moments, and through him, we lived them. It was an acting class unto itself, and it had me totally hooked on CSI ever since. I like everybody else in the show, and will probably keep watching, but his leaving will create a hole that nobody, not even the great Sam Jackson, can ever fill. William Peterson is a brilliant actor.

RG Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Last night's episode was good, but I was bothered by the fact how fast they solved the case and was hoping Warrick's death will be solved in a couple of episodes. Of course, there is the conflict of interest of the team investigating his death. But oh well.

I was happy to see Sara again and see how she and Grissom handle their relationship. Nine more episodes to go before WP leaves. It definitely won't be the same, but I'm looking forward what else the show has in store for us.

Gem Kitten Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

One of the best drama episodes I've ever watched. Yes I cried! Nick and and Gil were so compelling.

Will the show lose its appeal when Peterson and Foxx leave? I hope not. I actually enjoyed the male character (can't remember his name) that was on the show briefly during the 2007 epidsodes in which he shared a strong connection with Kathryn. He was there just a short time before being killed yet he drew you in and I never lost interest. Jerry Bruckheimer will find a way to keep it interesting. CSI remains my favorite show.

Pat Lamb Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I have been a CSI fan from the git-go.All the characters make the show what it is.I am very sorry to see Peterson leaave, he is the ramrod.I think they should have given Dourdan a chance to clean-up & continue. (anyone can fall). Fishbourne will be able to handle himself here very well. The show will change considerably and change can be good. THe show last nite was a tear jerker for sure. The gang worked hard to find the killer & I would not have cared if Nick had shot him. Nicks sorrow was very hard for me to bear & I knew Catherine would be stouthearted. You could see the love for there comrad in all the teams faces.

Mick Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I can’t help but think the writers really missed a golden opportunity here.
I was certain within the first 5 minutes that this was going to be the start of a 3-4-part story arc. It was a great episode but come on, really, they wrap it up in one hour??! The under-sheriff McKeen is careless enough to leave a partial on a .25 slug he shoots a CSI with? Really? He’s that stupid?

Me thinks this smacks of uncharacteristically lazy writing.

And how about the non- event between McKeen and Officer Pritchard.
McKeens got the only loaded weapon but the next thing we know (but don’t see) is Pritchard’s dead and McKeens shot. Huh?

Great acting though especially Eads when he got the gun on him. Terrific!

Bring back stuff like the Miniature Killer.

Much better when we have a continuing plotline to look forward to.

Sand Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I thought it was one of the best CSI's ever. The whole cast did a fantastic job of showing grief in their own ways. I'll miss Warrick and I will miss Grissom when he leaves, but as in real life people move on and you still have to go on with your own life. You cannot just curl up and ignore the world around you. I feel CSI will go on and I actually am getting excited to see what Lawrence Fishburne will bring to the show.
