Bits and Bobs (Emergency Vol. 16 1/2): 'Who' should replace David Tennant as 'The Doctor'?

Oct 30, 2008, 01:14 PM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Categories: Bits and Bobs, British things, I'm Just a Geek, Sci-Fi

Drwhoreplacement_l Whovians, you knew it would happen. David Tennant, perhaps the best Time Lord ever, announced yesterday that he’s retiring his sonic screwdriver after 2009's Doctor Who specials. Which begs the question: Who will/should replace him? Rumors have swirled about everyone from Eddie Izzard, to Robert Carlyle, to Rhys Ifans, to that bloke from History Boys, Russell Tovey. But my money’s on Irishman James Nesbitt or the hilarious Richard Coyle. Both have previous connections with new head writer and exec producer Steven Moffat (James starred in Jekyll, while Richard appeared in Coupling) and both are pretty damn versatile.

Yet, if I could cast my dream 11th Doctor, I’d go with either blondie Marc Warren (Hustle, State of Play) or scene-stealing Jason O’Mara (who currently rocks the U.S. Life on Mars). I know, I know, Warren’s been on the show before, but that hasn’t stopped David Morrisey and John Simm from being named as possible successors to Tennant’s TARDIS throne. And if O'Mara’s up for a little work during his summer break from Mars -- that’s if poor, underrated Mars is even still around -- I’d love to hear his real Irish accent more often.

That said, how brilliant would it be to see a woman in the role (AbFab icon Jennifer Saunders’ name has also been thrown in the mix). Former Doctor Paul McGann once mentioned he'd like to see Dame Maggie Smith or Diana Rigg's kid, Rachael Stirling, get the part. He took some heat for it, but I’m up for a little Time Lady action, how about you?  Anyhow, if you were in Mr. Moffat's shoes, who would you cast as the new Doctor?

omg! richard armitage would be amazing. he'd have to work on acting a little more chipper though. it's the doctor nature. if the doctor is ever a woman, i think i'll kill myself. the doctor can't be a woman. it's the doctor! he's just...always a man. he may be a different species but he's still male.

Steve Fish Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Personally I think we need a change from Tall and Dark. Hence the suggestion of Malcolm McDowell. The whole point of a regeneration is the Doctor becoming strikingly different. So long as it is not different as in Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy, then any change is good!!

rashbre Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:20 AM EST

Dylan Moran

Miss Jane Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

I will be very sorry to see David Tennant leave, but would like to suggest Richard Armitage - he does tall, dark and grumpy beautifully...Surely we will need some contrast to tall, dark and hyperactive??? I bet a lot of women would concur.

Steve Fish Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 02:30 AM EST

If you want a really different Doctor how about the established Movie Actor Malcolm McDowell. He would certainly be ambiguous because he usually plays charismatic Sci Fi villains (for instance he played baddie Toleen Soren in the film Star Trek Generations). And he certainly fits the bill of older and quirkier looking

Angel Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I nominate Peter Wingfield. I think he would pleasantly surprise everyone. I admit I wasn't sure about David Tennant when he started, but he changed my mind pretty quickly. This is a hard one, though. I'll give ya that. I just don't see going for the obvious. Not going for the obvious is what keeps Who interesting.

Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Paddy Considine is my favorite contender for the 11th doctor. He has Eccleston's broodiness, Tennant's quirkiness and his own sense of self. He is menacing without necessarily being scary. He is also one of the best actor of his generation.

My other choice would be Mark Strong. I know he is more "vilain material" but those of you who have seen him in tv shows such as "Walk away and I stumble" or in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla knows that he could make a great ambiguous and humane doctor.

Steve Fish Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Would love it to be either Simon Pegg, Richard Coyle,Robert Glenister or MacKenzie Crook. Steven Moffat has said that the handsome leading man thing is all plaid out and he wants someone 40 plus and a bit weird looking to stress the Doctors alien background. Much as I would love any of the above the smart money appears to be on the first black Doctor. If they are going to go that route I would suggest the American comedian Reginald D Hunter. He has me in absolute fits of laughter with his dry delivery!!

J.Parker Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 05:45 AM EST

Jake Maskall or Joel Beckett :]. They Were Jake (Joel) and Danny (Jake) in Eastenders!

jemma. Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 05:42 AM EST

Sorry, that's Dominic Monaghan (spelt it wrong b4 lol) aka. Charlie from Lost

jemma. Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 05:37 AM EST

Domininc Monaghan would be a wicked dr who i reckon =]. But as if that's gonna happen.

ThetaSigma Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Geoffrey Rush should be the next Doctor.

Tiffany Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

There's a Facebook group dedicated to getting the word out there that we'd like to see Dylan Moran as the new Doctor Who.

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=60109555800&ref=nf

Join up, if you have Facebook...and if you have face time with execs at the BBC, tell them what the people want. LOL.

Wire Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

Dominic West from The Wire. Great actor and he's British. Failing that, Dylan Moran would be a fantastic choice.

I agree with Billy Boyd as the new Dr. ho! He's incredible and so underrated!

MadFan Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Richard Armitage! Richard Armitage! Richard Armitage!

Laura M. Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

I'm still really bummed about this news. David Tennant was the best Doctor Who ever! Don't leave, David, pretty please?

That being said... honestly, the only Brits I can think of who would come close to David's brilliance are major stars like Hugh Laurie and Ewan McGregor, who are obviously unavailable. Man, David is NOT going to be easy to replace...

Nic in Stoke-on-Trent Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 05:54 AM EST

For a female doctor, how about Jemimah Rooper? Funny, smart and a good chance of a relationship with an attractive, female sidekick!
For a male Doctor, I'd love to see Stephen Fry in the role. But Eddie Izzard could be great. For a more sardonic approach, I think that Hugh Grant could really do well.
What about Hugh Bonneville? He has that avuncular humour that could work nicely.

aj Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Most hilarious ideas for the next Doctor that I've actually heard on the internet:
1. Bill Bailey
2. Boris Johnson
3. Jeremy Clarkson
4. George W. Bush (the Guardian, no less! though in jest)

A Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Alan Cumming would be brilliant!

emery Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Oh, yes, Alan Cumming would be wonderful!!!!

emery Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

So many interesting suggestions! Sean Pertwee, Philip Glenister, Stephen Fry (if only!), Simon Pegg (double if only!) and who mentioned Alan Tudyk? I could see that, too. One of the things I love about this character is how amendable he is to creative, outside-the-box casting. Someone said Billy Boyd, but I could see his LOTR protege Dominic Monaghan in the role as well. What about Stephen Tompkinson. He's such a scene stealer and I loved him in BallyK. All of the names being floated in the press are also wonderful -- David Morrisey and John Simm, in particular. It's a real testament to the depth of UK acting talent that there are so many good candidates to choose from.

Chris Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

I think the next doctor will be Guy Flanagan.

Watch this space..

Liz Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 02:58 AM EST

An American? My vote would be for Alan Tudyk - he would be brilliant! I would also definitely like to see a female Dr Who at some stage but can't think of who, just not Billie Piper (she is and always will be Rose). Although I like the idea of Dylan Moran, Eddie Izzard and Steve Coogan, I think we are dreaming there! Agree Chiwetel Ejiofur would be absolutely amazing! At this stage I can't imagine anyone bringing as much to the Doctor as David Tennant and really look forward to seeing the specials from next year.

Ivriniel Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Jason O'Mara? AKA Block O' Wood?

Heck no!

Kelmar Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

There are some great suggestions here! I don't have any to add, just a teardrop on my keyboard for my beloved David Tennant. I'm looking forward to whatever he does next.

Emily Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

All I know is I would hate to see a female or American (or both) Doctor. I'm not too familiar with British actors but please don't leap across the pond to find a new Doctor!

Jeni Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

As much as I love David Tennant I'm excited for what's to come for Doctor Who and for David. I really wish David would have stuck around for a season with Steven Moffat though, cause I adore Moffats stories.

I don't think I'll be as excited for the new Doctor, as David was my first and I love him dearly. But I will be watching eagerly as a fan of the show. I won't even give up a guess of who they'll cast because I have no idea. I'm sure Steven Moffat will pick someone brilliant.

And I'm excited for the stuff David has in the works. He's doing a movie called 1939 and I'm sure he's got more in the works =) As an American fan I'm really hoping for a transfer of Hamlet to Broadway. I went to see it in Stratford-Upon-Avon in August, but I'd really like for my friends (and my aunt) who are fans of his as well to be able to see him in it without having to pay as much as I did for my trip to England XD

Amelie Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 04:06 AM EST

I really like the idea of either Dylan Moran or Phillip Glenister. Both are fantastic to watch and very handsome as well.

Although so are James Callis and Jamie Bamber. Oooh, the options are endless and just too brilliant.

I like the idea of taking Dr.Who into a new direction. I like the idea of Pegg and Sewell, but I know Rufus is involved in the 11th Hour and Pegg will be tied up with the Star Trek reboot if it does well at the box office. The doctor doesn't have to be long term (like Christopher). I would like to know who the doctor's wife/mate was who gave birth to his child that is Susan's parent. Maybe Susan did survive. She's in suspended animation or a coma, which is why the doctor can't sense her. They can call the arc "Reunion"

Dylan Moran should be the next doctor.
Hes amazing funny/witty and nice to look at.

Dale R. Swift Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I would like to see Anthony Stewart Head be the new Doctor.
He was one of my favs on Bffy the vampire Slayer.

rob Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Also-my suggestion for David's regeneration: make the specials next year linked by a theme (as they've been doing)-this time "hell hath no fury as a woman scorned"-i.e. the revenge of Rose Tyler. Finally gets back to him, he dumps with a pseudo Doctor and runs away again. She snaps and uses doppleganger Tennant to figure out a way back across and sets a trap. Torchwood is on her tail (not realizing who has come across) and ends with guns pointed at Rose (by Cpt Jack) and the Doctor. Doctor and Rose die but obviously Doctor lives. Maybe dopple-Tennant realized what she was planning and convinced her that it was a special weapon that would prevent regeneration but it didn't (i.e. a time lord "silver bullet") but his twin "saved" him in the end. What do you all think? Wraps up everything and lets Dr. Who go on in a new direction ending the RTD/Tennant era completely AND in a shocking/emotional way never before seen in Dr. Who. I realize it would be controversial but memorable..

Robert Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

My ideas:
Hugh Grant
Rowan Atkinson
Simon Pegg
Paul Bettany
Rufus Sewell

Needs to be someone action-oriented, but more importantly can show the weight/burden of nearly 1000 years of experience, pain of loss, moral rage at injustice, passionate and funny. Hugh Grant would be #1 for me (or Pegg having just seen Spaced).

But my real out there choice: Iddo Goldberg (who?) He plays Ben, Billie Piper's friend in Secret Diary of Call Girl-he is an amazing young actor (from Isreal I believe)-his work in Series 1 of Call Girl was outstanding and would be a very young Doctor but I think he's amazing. And boy would Captain Jack flip over that Doctor :).

Sienna Scorpio Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

My short list:
-Richard Coyle
-Jack Davenport
-Joseph Fiennes (haven't seen him in a while)
- James Marsters (he's been on Torchwood)
-Eamon Walker (yes, I know he's Black, but David can be near a Black person when he dies and their bodies are fused together or some other sci-fi explanation)
-Rupert Penry Jones (Adam from MI-5/Spooks,co-starred in Casanova with Tennant. Would be a good choice if MI-5 isn't picked up for an 8th series)

Dark Horse:
Andy Serkis

Michelle Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

I loved the James Callis or Jamie Bamber suggestions - merge two great fandoms in one fell swoop. These two would be drastically different - I'd love to see Jamie play someone that is unreserved and a little over the top.

Angjo Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I also like James Murray from Primeval, he would make an excellent Dr Who!

film4future Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

P.S. I also really like James Murray from Primeval.

film4future Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

You kow who would be great? Billy Boyd! He's has the same energy as Tennant. I also like the idea of Steven Mackintosh or Sean Pertwee. And James Nesbitt or John Hannah would be a good choice too. A definite NO to David Morrissey. He creeps me out. The person has to have a zany brilliance without being scary.

Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

ewan mc gregor or simon pegg

JD Simmons Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

John Mccain, because he's a Maverick.....
and it would herald a return the days of the dirty old man type Doctor travelling with a young and attractive female. "It may look small, but I assure you my dear, it's much bigger than it looks."

Teranel Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

Jonas Armstrong, since he's quitting Robin Hood soon. And anything with Alan Rickman in it is good.

Not anyone too old, or anyone too young. The Doctor is over 900 years old, he shouldn't look like he's 20. NO DANIEL RADCLIFFE! And I don't like the idea of a female doctor, because that could be awkward to explain.

Maria Pope Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

James Nesbit, you heard it from me first. He will be the doctor who.

you know it makes sense! pick him.

Craig Warren Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

Em- agree with you! Tennant was good but not my fave either - I thought Ecclestone was better, darker and less predictable. As for the future - please, Steven Moffatt, can we now have a break from the 'awestruck/lovesick companion' stereotype? The level of sycophantic doctor-worshipping going on in stories over the last 3 years has been getting positively creepy. As for the 11th doctor - maybe Simon Woods?

kezs man Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

I thik it is good that doctor who is moveing on

Shasta Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

TIM CURRY. His show was canceled. And the Doctor doesn't always have to be some spring chicken. TIM CURRY would be the BEST. No contest.

Brian Klunk Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Nobody has suggested Jason Isaacs yet. He's got the colors and range to be a very interesting #11.

Mr. C. Nashawarmaty Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Alan Cumming

Shannon Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Verity Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

TenPark - ACK! You're right! I knew that didn't seem right but lazy me didn't check imdb. Thanks for the correction!

ged denton Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

it has to be SEAN PERTWEE!!!!!

Julia Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

No female Doctors, please. (though that would be interesting to explain.)Could we have an American Doctor?

Deb Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

NO! David Tennant CAN'T leave!! He's AWESOME! I love him as Dr. Who. Is there any report on his future projects? I will miss him dearly.

To Mike Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

No, Jennifer Saunders has been mentioned as a possible replacement as well

TenPark Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

@ Verity - I think you are referring to DAVID Morrissey, who was in State of Play, and Blackpool with David Tennant. He has also appeared in Doctor Who (will appear in this year's Xmas special) so I don't see how/why some people think he (like past DW guest actors John Simm, Marc Warren, Simon Pegg) could be in the running.

Verity Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

I must be the only person out there who just does not get all the praise for Tim Morrissey. He's never really done it for me. I liked him in State of Play but was totally underwhelmed by his Colonel Brandon in the latest Sense & Sensibility. He just always looks like he's angry about something, scowling at people and what not. Even in Viva Blackpool I was more drawn to the other characters than I was to him. So I'm not all that keen on the idea of him being cast as the 11th Doctor. But hey, what do I know? Everyone else seems to love him. Maybe this would be the role that would change my mind about him.

Verity Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

As much as I love David Tennant as the Doctor (he is definitely my favorite of the 10), I knew the day would eventually come when he would leave the show. So while I'm very sad that he won't be with us much longer, I'm also looking forward to seeing who they get to replace him. (I've already made a few of my own suggestions). It is, afterall, the nature of the show to change the lead actor every once in a while. This will at least free Tennant up to do other things and I'd really like to see what else the man can do. As for Doctor Who, I agree with what some others have said about keeping him a male character. Besides, the Doctor's daughter is out there somewhere :) So they can always bring in a female Time Lord.

Dduellman Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

Em - yes, you are the only one who isn't crazy about David Tennant as the Dr.

Dduellman Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

Please people. Watch Life on Mars. It's the only new show of the season I watch. The British version was awesome and this is a pretty darn close second. Women of the world unite, Jason O'Mara is worth our love.

Jason Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

I don't really care who the new Doctor is, we're all going to keep watching anyway since, other than Lost, it is the most creative show on TV. That said, I'm going to miss David Tennant. Have they announced a new companion yet? I wasn't too fond of Donna, so will be glad when she's out of the picture...

Mike Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

to recaper - You are confusing the actresses. It is Joanna Lumley (Patsy from AbFab) who played the first female Dr Who in the Comic Relief spoof. Her name has been mentioned as a possible Dr Who since the 1980s, & her appearance in the spoof was a nod to this. Anyone who has seen her opposite David McCallum in the (superior to Dr Who) 70s sci-fi series 'Sapphire & Steel' can see why so many UK people always pick her as the first choice for a female Dr.

TenPark Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 07:40 AM EST

It would be GREAT to have Eccleston back – not a chance of course – but I would light up like his ninth Doctor did and go "Fantastic!". Wishful thinking...
David Tennant was amazing but every Doctor has his time and he’s had a pretty good run of it, so maybe it is time to hand the TARDIS keys over to someone else.

orville Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 07:33 AM EST

I like the idea of a female doctor. But if that's not possible I love the suggestion of Mackenzie Crook that someone made.

julie Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

NOOOOOOOO!!! *clings to her Tenth Doctor*
Well, if it's gotta happen, I second the Marc Warren idea. He was completely endearing as Elton Pope on the "Love and Monsters" epi of DW. I also wouldn't mind a return of Christopher Eccleston...not a chance, I know. But nobody will ever be able to replace my David. *sigh*

Rose Tyler Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 06:58 AM EST

I thought it WAS going to be Morrissey, since the Christmas special is called The Next Doctor, and Morrissey plays a man who claims to be the Doctor. So, maybe him!

I'm just going to miss Tennant terribly. :(

Amelie Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 06:33 AM EST

Er, Mackenzie Crook? Would be a great way for him to shrug off his Gareth character from The Office. He'd have to be a lot less smug though.

Or Philip Glenister? I NEED to see him in more TV shows. His peerless Gene Hunt character from Life on Mars is my TV boyfriend and if he were to be the Doctor I would die of happiness :)

to the producers Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:51 AM EST

I don't care who they choose bc David was the best. I really, really, really do hope they will keep the trend with the doctor getting yummier and younger with each life. If we are reverting back to old, fat and ugly I'm afraid they will lose me as a fan.

Martin Freeman Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:42 AM EST

He was hilarious in both The Office UK and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

to recaper Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

Also, Jennifer Saunders was alredy fetured as the last doctor in a Christmass special spoof with hugh grant and rowan atkinson along others.

to the recaper Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:36 AM EST

Richard Coyle would have been a good choice had he not been a character on the show who died in order to save his girlfriend (it was one of the crappier psychological eps).

Malvolio Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:04 AM EST

How bout Anthony Stewart Head?

Nix Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

Rick Warden. (What, half the cast of Band of Brothers has already been mentioned, including both Warren and O'Mara, what's another?) Or Shane Taylor, if you can tear him away from that bizarre Gorkys FC webcomedy.

Balabanto Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:28 AM EST

There is really only one choice if we want to have some continuity, and it will make you all cranky, but I think it's destiny.

Billie Piper is the answer.

"You're the Doctor, Rose. Run. Run for your life!"

Jason Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

My wife would love to see Paul Bettany as the new doctor. He sort of reminds me of a bit of Peter Davidson's doctor.

Kim Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

Alan Rickman - remember how good he was as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Bill Nighy would be ashtetically pleasing - very elegant man or Stephen Fry as a very intelligent sarcy Dr or someone out of left field - Geoffrey Rush - he is so brilliant, he would bring a totally different Dr to life

Phil Jupitus. I think a rotund Doctor in a plaid suit would be great! I would like Eddie Izzard also - not in drag of course. Maybe it will be more left field like Ameet Chana or Kris Marshall.

I love to watch this show but I guess it was because of Tennant ( I fell in love with him as Casanova)....to me he is THE DOCTOR... I began watching when he came in so I don't know if I'll continue watching.

Oh he and Rose were perfect...Hey I'm not much into Sci-Fi but for David i was...Whovians this is the time to come together to get a worthy replacement.
