Beyonce's 'If I Were a Boy': What do you think?

Oct 8, 2008, 01:32 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Beyoncé, Music, Things That Are Awesome!

Beyonce_l Q: Is Beyoncé Knowles ever going to make a musical misstep?

A: Based on "If I Were a Boy," her new track that debuted on Elvis Duran's Z100 show this morning (check out the high-quality version below, or an embedded YouTube version after the jump), I'd say it doesn't look likely. Indeed, the initial release from B's upcoming third solo disc is an exciting departure from her previous lead singles, the Southern-fried funk of "Déjà Vu" (from 2006's B'day) and the (greatest single of all time) jubilant horn-infused "Crazy in Love" (from 2003's Dangerously in Love).

In the past, I've often translated the term "Beyoncé ballad" to mean "album filler," yet "If I Were a Boy" is anything but. The contemplative lyrics find Beyoncé envisioning herself in the role of her do-wrong guy -- I'd put myself first/ And make the rules as I go/ 'Cause I know that she'd be faithful/ Waitin' for me to come home -- and her searing vocal is absolutely up to the challenge. "If I Were a Boy" sounds totally fresh, not like anything else on the radio right now, and should put Ms. Knowles right back in her throne as Queen of Top 40 Radio. (Rihanna, Pink, and Katy Perry, I hope you ladies had fun in B's absence.)

What do you think of "If I Were a Boy"? Let's hear your reviews (and your predictions for the song's chart trajectory) in the comments section below.

I am almost 60 years old. I know talent when I hear it. Beyonce did an exceptional job of sounding hurt. Her voice cries of hurt. I love it. You are wonderful beyonce.

Andy Tue, May 5, 2009 at 03:39 PM EST

I love Beyonce's voice. She makes any song her own as well as she can sing in different voices and sound great! Her album is FANTASTIC and her concert is THE BEST I'D EVER SEEN!!! She's the real deal live.

Minnie Mon, May 4, 2009 at 04:01 PM EST

Love this song and how Beyonce tore it down!!! She's the best at anything she does.

Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" is a fantastic, emotional song. I think Ms Knowles has hit a truly high note with this track and i love it, I play the clip of it often before I go to bed so it's plaintitive tone stays in my head for a while and yes, I don't mind shedding a tear over it once in a while. It tells it like it is even if we wish it weren't so.

Kaye Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 05:02 PM EST

"EXCUSE THE FAST TYPING AND ERRORS THAT OCCURED", but you get the point. Alicia Keys, Keyshia Cole, etc. - all "songwriters" have someone writing with them, but they get their credit. Beyonce has shown on VIDEO for this album and her last of her RE-WRITING SONGS, CHANGING HARMONIES, PRODUCING ETC. Yes, you see her lyrics as well as lyrics she wrote over. Get over it and stop hating the Queen.

Ricki Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 04:57 PM EST

I'M SICK TO DEATH OF HATERS NOT WANTING BEYONCE TO GET CREDIT BECAUSE SHE'S BEEN THE TOP FEMALE SINCE SHE STEPPED ON THE SCENE. GET OVER IT ALREADY BECAUSE YOUR HATE FOR HER ONLY MADE HER THE TOP PERSON THAT SHE IS. She gives credit where it's due and she gets credit where it's due. Not just out of her mouth, from the producers and writers that she works with so are they lying too?

Kaye Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 04:55 PM EST

Sorry to disappoint your fruitless efforts Randy, but the FOX person is a blatant hater of Beyonce and rarely gives her credit. He posted as you believe, a bunch of fruitless facts. Some hits that she wrote - Survivor, Independent Women, Say May Name (SHE GOT THE ASCAP WRITER OF THE YEAR FOR), etc. Beyonce is uber talented and because she's beautiful she has to be a fake. Sorry to disappoint, but he only fake is who you're supporting. The FOX article doesn't want to give her co-writing credit. EVERY ARTIST has a writing team, etc. and if they don't outwrite right it, CHANGES LYRICS AND VOCAL HARMONIES, WHICH GIVES YOUR "WRITING CREDIT". Who's taking credit for SAMPLING? She ALWAYS GAVE RICH HARRISON HIS CREDITS, CHI-LITES, ETC., SO YOU'RE DIGGING OUT ARTICLES THAT ARE HALF-ASS FACTUAL POSTINGS? I'M NOT IMPRESSED, BUT OBVIOUSLY THE ACADEMY IS BECAUSE ASCAP DEFINITELY CHECKS BEFORE HANDING OUT AWARDS. ALSO, SHE'S NOT ON THE CREDITS FOR "IF I WERE A BOY" YOU DOPE.

Randy Fri, Feb 6, 2009 at 08:26 AM EST

Im sick to death of Beyonce being given credit of being more than one of the worlds best Karaoke singer..
JayP's comment of Beyonce’s If I Were a Boy highlight’s her immaturity as a lyricist made me dig out this article... Beyonce has never written a hit single in her life. If you dont believe me, read this article... it shows you piece by piece that she hasnt written a single hit song.....
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,172552,00.html

Randy Fri, Feb 6, 2009 at 08:18 AM EST

Steph you noob... Beyonce is saying now she didnt write the song, in earlier interviews she said she did. .... her name is definately on the credits as a writer to collect royalties on this song.........
Beyonce has never written a hit single, never ever, ever, never.. read my lips.... her name is on virtually every song she has recorded as a co-writer for the purpose of collecting a share of the writing royalties....someone has changed maybe 3 words or added an Oh Yeah or Oo ahh and that has been their way of claiming she co wrote the song... this song she never even had the rights to release... They were negotiating with JC and couldnt agree on terms so Beyonce and her dad went and released it when they didnt even have the rights to it and still claimed Beyonce was a co writer...
The girl is a fraud.. she claimed she took ages to write Irreplaceable and that she wrote it for women when the truth came out that NeYo wrote it.. shes the "world heavyweight song stealing champion"

Douglas L Webster Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 02:27 PM EST

Great song. I thought I was only one who thought the simularity with 'If god was one of us'. Also similar is Michelle Branch's 'All you wanted'. Must be a standard guitar riff? But do like all three songs.

Christo Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 04:04 AM EST

Dear reader,

Please could anyone mail me the lyrics of "If I were a boy" to see what all the fuzz is about?

Thank you so much

BEYONCE STAN Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 05:43 PM EST

I love Beyonce - she's the real deal when it comes to talent. Never less than the best at giving you your money's worth. She can cover anything. Every new artist is given the Beyonce blueprint because she's a force to be reckoned with. Too bad they never get it quite like her - hehe.

I wish Sade and her band would come out of hiding and do at least one more album and concert tour.
Bey will probably want to take a break for a while.......

Steph Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 05:10 PM EST

DAZ - YOU'RE THE NUMBNUT!!! This has been discussed A TRILLION TIMES that Beyonce HAS SAID SHE DIDN'T WRITE THE SONG IN HER INTERVIEWS!!!! TOBY & BC have their credit and Beyonce KILLS it. If that were the case, TOBY wouldn't have given it to her. THIS IS OLD NEWS YOU'RE TRYING TO PUT OUT THERE AND IT'S NOT WORKING. BEYONCE IS UBER-TALENTED AND HAS BEEN FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS. "WHAT YOU THINK THEY'RE ALL MAD AT ME FOR?" - Upgrade You, B-Day

DAZ Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 07:56 PM EST

For you numb nuts out there, BC did write the song and DID get credit for writing it on the album, HOWEVER Beyonce has said that the song is hers and that she wrote the lyrics. Being interviewed by hundreds of media outlets Im sure she said that the song is hers to help promote her album. The entertainment industry is built on illusion or re-direction of the truth so who cares what she says. BC got her tag line on the album and thats it. Now for you other numb nuts who think the song sucks... I happen to know both BC and her x and know what really happend. To hear BC sing that song, it really brings home what happened and how she felt about it. I got much luv for BC and hope shes as big as beyonce one day... Heck shes just as hot, thats for sure. GO Star98.7 in LA for playing BC's version too.

Y'ALL DONT KNOW WAT Y'ALL TALKIN BOUT!!!!!!!! Beyonce is a great artist and this song go hard! Nameless, jus cuz u a guy dont mean that you can dis this song! All the song is sayin is that she's been taken for granted and in the chorus, she's sayin what she would do if she was a boy and in the verses, she's saying how she sees it from a guy perspective dummy!!!

Tina Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 11:42 AM EST

Beyonce is a great artist.. and she didnt steal no song. The song isn't one of her best and she is saying that she would like to feel what it is to be a boy and to see it from their point of view.

Nameless Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 06:53 AM EST

in my opinion beyonce's "if i were a boy" is an extremely sexist and insulting song based off of one individuals troubles with their love life. if she truly dislikes the male population to the degree of which this song depicts then she should become a lesbian rather than compose an obnoxious song to be played constantly on radios around the world. personally, when i hear the song start to play on the radio i wait to see if it is one of the two remixes i know of, or her dreadful original. if you want to hear a half way decent version of this song then find the one of the remixes featuring either r. kelly or lee carr.

meee Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

Overrated singer. Shrill voice. Limited talent. That's how I can sum up Beyawnse.
Have any of you ever seen P!nk live?. She can move a crowd of 20,000 people just by the sound of her voice. That is talent to me, not this overrated cow.

Real Talk Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

JPAY - most of what you said fell on deaf ears. I honestly stopped reading it because it's over the top and not that serious. Aside from she's just performing it and not the writer of it - it's CATERED TOWARDS YOUNG ADULTS. I do know ADULTS that love it too. It's not immature nor is it misplaced. It's a perfect song with a message for young girls being performed beautifully by the talented Beyonce.

Jay P Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

Beyonce’s If I Were a Boy highlight’s her immaturity as a lyricist and an individual. Invoking gender as the cause of her relationship grievances oversimplifies the problems she sings about. To polarise the complexity of human relationships and interactions as she does fulfils no beneficial purpose. A relationship, or world, viewed as ‘us and them’ is destined to be filled with misunderstanding, rumour, superstition and poor communication and will subsequently see a tragic end. A more sophisticated interpretation of each other’s actions, whereby the individual is viewed as unique, allows clarity and objectivity to emerge. Moreover, the anti-male accusations within If I Were a Boy are broad-spectrum, inflammatory remarks designed to engage the deepest prejudices between the genders in lieu of insightful content.

Megan Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

This song is great. It's catchy and once again she is representing all the girls who have gone through sh*t. I don't see the truth in her stealing anything; she probably had the rights to reproduce it. People need to stop being so jealous- this girl can sing. It is such a refreshing sound to the radio, totally different, and I for one can't wait to hear it again.

Janine Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

I meant to say "chords"

You only need a few chords to make a beautiful ballad.

Who wrote this?

Janine Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:55 AM EST

When I heard this song start in a store and I asked the clerk...who is this...she told me, I tuned in when I was in my car and I loved it. It's the same 4 right chord that make you cry...always.

God I am sick of hearing this friggin song. Give me rock anytime! This song is absolutely nauseating:(

All I know is Beyonce sang the words off this lyric sheet! She brings it every time and she's the only one of these chicks I support because she's the real deal live.

GP Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I don't give a f*ck who wrote the song she's the one singing it. I would feel the same way if Mary J Blidge was singing it. I'm tired of hearing the same old independent, don't need a man, can you keep up, caught em cheating so I kicked em out, all my laaaadyyys, single women, but I still love em tracks. Yes she can sing, yes she is beautiful. However these songs are repetitive, This women could put out a track with nothing on like pootie tang and all these clowns will love it just cause it's her. Sorry but to me she's wonderful and I respect her success but she has been working hard from the moment she could walk. Rehearsing, tours and all kinds of ish. She's selling her listeners dreams how could she possibly know so much about relationships that single women that aren't rich go through? She just on these tracks saying the popular thing right now. Independant women is a real big song subject on top of cheating men. It's not innovative at all to me PERIOD!

i have this song on my touch. its amazing. but its really sad, so sometimes i choose not to listen to it when i'm already sad. :(

Steve-O Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 04:17 AM EST

I posted what I think on my blog at www.liftingfogblog.com

I think she missed the boat on this one. While the music is great I think the lyrics are hypocritical. Check my post and tell me what you think

John Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

Beyonce brings it every time. She never in the tabloids flashing her crotch, running off stage faking sickness or getting arrested for DUI's. She's been in the industry for over 12 years and never played herself once. She's winning.

VOICE Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

Beyonce definitely has one of the top voices of this generation - hands down. She swtiches it up and even mimicks instruments - HER VOICE IS AMAZING!!!!

nplaice Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I can't stand this song, I don't think she's a great singer, I turn the radio to a different station when it comes on.

Jo Mama Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

The song sucks, so does Beyonce! I can't stand to listen to this song!

Get your head checked Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

If I were a boy is a song sung by Beyonce Knowles. It was written from the perspective of a very confused girl. The girl is confused because she does not understand why the boy she loves is treating her poorly by doing what the stereotypical male does in a relationship. The boy decides to go out with the friends instead of her, chase other girls and so on. What this song truly demonstrates is a lack of self worth on the girls’ part. She complains about an attraction that she is not willing to give up even when it hurts her. We could debate whether or not love ever was present but the real issue is that this girl is not willing to move on to a healthy relationship because she feels better wallowing in her own delusion. This song infuriates me because anyone who has made it to a reasonable age of maturity can understand the true madness of this disturbingly horrible song.

Why Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

Why do people keep rehashing that she stole a song? She DIDN'T STEAL THE SONG!!! BC Jean HAS WRITING CREDIT ON HER ALBUM. Toby wrote the song with BC and gave it away. How can Beyonce steal what was given to her by the writer? Stop it because it's corny and just give that girl her props.

livvy Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

wat i think is tht beyonce did a gud job on the song yer its not hers but singers steal old songs all the time but no1 cares about tht y beyonce??? BC jean and beyonce u both sound the same and did a great job!! i believe every1 is just ova reacting!!

BEYONCE DIDN'T STEAL ANYTHING FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME.
THE SONG WAS RECORDED AND GIVEN AWAY. BC JEAN HAS SAID THIS. TOBY GAD HAS SAID THIS. THE WORLD HAS SAID THIS. STOP TRYING TO PUT NEGATIVITY OUT AGAINST BEYONCE. SHE DID AN AWESOME JOB SINGING IT AND HER ALBUM IS AMAZING.
BEYONCE IS BEAUTIFUL HUMBLE AND DESERVES ALL THE ACCOLADES SHE GETS.

Ryan Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

Well, after hearing bc jean sing "if i were a boy" ive come to realize, her version is way better. Obviously Beyonces people stole the song. Too bad, The original needs to get some radio play!

Clay E. Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Justification can be made in the mind but never in the heart. The heart knows. The heart knows right and wrong. The heart knows a thief. Beyonce knows wheater she stole this song or not. I personally will never buy any of her music again. Shame on your father Beyonce. Shame on you.

Variety Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

Don't support many artists because they're fake. Beyonce is the real deal - you get even more live than you do from a studio album. This album has a variey of different styles of singing and her voice is AMAZING. SHE REALLY BROUGH IT ON THIS ALBUM - KUDOS TO BEYONCE.

Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I just don't understand how someone could just steal someone song and get away with it, Thats exactly what Beyonce and her dad did and they say they are Christians.

love good songs Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I'd say it's a waste of talent. If I go by my ear - my ears are screaming shut it off!!!! Beyonce has been reaching too much lately. Same thing, I feel she was reaching in that song "In this club" with Usher. That song "If I were a boy" just makes my mood do a crash dive. Need I say more, I hate it. Lyrics might be uplifting to women, I don't like how it was sung.

Kat Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

This song was obviously written to be song by a young girl! Not to be sung by a flashy, older woman. Beyonce is a great artist, but she could never sing this song senserely like a young, fresh new star. There's so much room for new struggling artists this song could launch a career for. Beyonce has to stop grabbing the spotlight! This song doesn't suite her but she's become to vain to even see it. Next she'll be interupting High Scool Musical shaking around her gold sequins and blonde extentions. That song should be sung by a girl keepin it real!

Renny Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

BEYONCE IS A THIEF!!! N U'LL NEED TO STOP GIVING HER CREDIT SHE DOESN'T DESERVE. I'VE HEARD THE ORIGINAL SINGER AND SHE SOUNDS WAYYY BETTER!!! SHAME ON YOU BE!!! STOP BEING SELFISH

ron Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

MIA, PAPER PLANES, watch a catchy tune!

ron Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Nice vocal, but women are not angels. Nice try Beyonce, but your story should be about the G$%&%$# Pu$&%Y. That's the women's money maker!!

christina Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I think if she stole it, bc jean should get all the money and her song should be pulled off shelves. its plagerism and its just not fair. but on the other hand, the lyrics are great and bc jean will be getting alot of calls from people that actually wanna pay her for her music.

KJ Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I'm loving Beyonce. She always comes with something (for herself) that's new and fresh and she's UBER talented.

RJ Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

"..sounds totally fresh, not like anything else on the radio right now". Yup, sounds more like something from the past: "(What If God Was) One Of Us".

Diva Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

This is a stupid blog because it's obvious who the best is. And by the way, her album is FIYAH!!!!! I AM... SASHA FIERCE BABY!

Do any of you dholes realize that the music from this gay a$$ song is from "Lost" by Coldplay?????? What is with everyone these days?!!

Talent Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

daz manz - Beyonce songs couldn't be more different. So what if most of them was catered toward UPLIFTING women. That's great. Look at all the catergories you named and "etc." and you're saying they're the same? Yes, don't be blind and don't be deaf. Umbrella was a hit because of the beat, but it was the same "i love you boy and I'm riding with you." It also had buzz behind the scenes because Britney was supposed to record it and then Mary J. Anyway, Beyonce has shown range in her style of music, choice of music and how it's sung. She's truly the HCIG.

Candiigurl82 Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

This is to all the haters: first of all beyonce can out sing all names mentioned above (rhianna, mary j...etc i mean is there anyone else) live and studio. Rhianna sucks at singing live and giving a performance. Mary J dont get me wrong i love her music and style but she has never held a candle to Beyonce. Yall need to just give it up to my gurl B bc she doing her thang. She is the best performer out there. Yea Ciara (and it was good) did do a song like that but not like B. Please stop hating and give credit where credit is do. PLEASE

p.s on the writing her songs bit she may have not written the entire song but she contributes so thats why her name is present:)

brian Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

ok, when i 1st heard ciara's like a boy, i instantly luved it, now as far as beyonce's if i were a boy??? it's starting to grow on me.

wuteva Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

beyonce is a good peformer, but come on, why do she always try to take credit for everything? the song listen from dreamgirls... she wrote that right? so why is it that two other writers where nominated for an oscar and not her? also, she wrote irreplaceble right? so why did neyo say he wrote it, now i see people saying that someone else wrote if i were a boy??? i am confused!?! beyonce is beautiful, can dance and has a nice body, but singing? NO!!! she just has hott songs just like mary j, she cant sing, but her songs are hott... i mean come on jennifer hudson made beyonce look like it was HER 1st time in the "spotlight" on dream girls!! poor b tried to out sing j hud!

daz manz Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Yeah Ri got lucky too. My point is that Beyonces songs are always about the same story....if not replacing/upgrading/being independent now just being a boy blah blah blah (u get the thread)? all am saying is she shd sing about something else...is quite tiresome hearing the same project over again.
why did u think umbrella was a hit??? cos people felt it was all entirely diff compared with the same old
I'm not a beyonce hater, just a realist and if my fav artist puts something outhere that is not all that, i'll say so and not be a blind follower ..

Real Talk Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Sheri - just crawled from under a rock. That's been explained and re-explained and even by BC Jean herself. Quick recap since you're just waking up - Toby and BC wrote it, Toby gave it to Beyonce, Beyonce add lyrics and re-arranged vocals - hence the credits on the album. No slight to Beyonce on this and she killed the song.

Daz Man - lol. Rihanna just blew up on her 3rd album whereas Beyonce's been a star. No comparison. Also, Rihanna got lucky and was given Britney's songs since she wasn't ready. That's who's lucky.

Beyonce has shown diversity in her music and style since she's stepped on the scene. She's also the blueprint for females in music, incl. you're favorite artists.

daz manz Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Beyonce was lucky with her 1st solo-did a good job actually but that dosen't make her the best. problem is all her songs are the same content (relationships) now Rihanna's song are more diversified (rnb, rock etc), she is more fluid & interesting.....
Beyonce just can't singing the same old same old, yes her vocals are great but she just dosen't manage the whole package properly...

Annonamouse Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

I really think that beyonce couldn't have done a better job on that song. Even though the tittle has been kind of used she made it her own. Never would have thought she would have done it. Beyonce known for the glamerouse but down to earth type of person, and when she came out with that, it changed my whole approach. Just personally I hope she never looses who she really is! Good job, but don't forgett!

Sheri Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

First let me tell you the history of “If I Were a Boy” (written by Toby Gad and Beyoncé Knowles). Well that's what the credits say but when you have money, money is power. "If I were a Boy" was written by BC Jean, an unsigned, independent singer and songer writer who's song was sold unknowingly to the likes of Matthew Knowles, Beyonce's father whom according to BinsideTV.com "..plenty of people knew the saga of Beyonce's legendary manager/father Mathew Knowles' aggressive pursuit of the publishing rights to the potential hit record. His goal was to get the rights to the song and to put Beyonce's name on the writing credits." To put your credits on a record just because your father purchased the rights of a song is absolutely disgusting and sad. I used to be a Beyonce fan, but until I learned the truth about how she and her father does business, I was completely turned off and no longer support her.

AWFUL, CHEESY song. Sung by the most overrated singer of our time. SHE CAN'T SING! I'll say it again...SHE CAN'T SING!!

Goona Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

SHUT IT HATERS. Beyonce is the best singer alive!!! She makes every song so real and touching! I Am... Sasha Fierce is gonna rock charts and kick idiots like rihanna back to where they came from!

Kenny Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:59 PM EST

hey auds,

"if i were a boy" is the correct grammar usage.

it's the subjunctive case, expressing a wish that the speaker desires to be true, but could realistically never happen.

if the title had been "if i was a boy" then it'd be saying that beyonce could possibly be a boy and that the song was sung to that effect.

it's kinda like that other song
"if i were a rich girl"

auds Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

I think it should have been: "If I WAS a boy" not "if I WERE a boy." I like the song very much though.... it's just wrong grammar...

Tara Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

She stole it. Of course she stole it. And it matters that she stole it. Maybe not to B who wants nothing more than to be an icon regardless of who she steps on, but to BC Jean, who's actual creativity and heartache went into crafting this song. My question is, when will the media (and that includes you, EW) grow a pair and call it what it is -- theft.

holly Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I am in love with this song and the video. Regardless of who wrote it (so many artists have songs written for them- I don't know why this is an issue for some people) or may have performed similarly themed songs before (most songs are about the same 5 topics so, again, why do people think this is special?), Beyonce's performance is strong enough to be lauded in it's own right.

the boiz in the video clip are HOT!!!!!!!!!! anybody know there names??

#1 Fan Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Someone said that she is given to much credit and i dsiagree....i think ya'll people discredit her! You talk about her but u know that she is a great artist, and im really tired of people finding reasons to try to make her look bad. Beyonce Giselle Knowles Carter is a great artist and vocalist and it should be where is we credit her and not discredit! Beyonce is one of the best if not the best! By the way stop comparing Ciara, Rihanna, and etc to Beyonce! Beyonce has worked to hard to have a rookie compared to her. Ciara barely can sing, Rihanna's okay but she don't write her own stuff but no one speaks on that! If i were a boy and like a boy don't compare cause Beyonce vocals were well put together. Ciara needs to thank God for the studio..BEYONCE' IS SIMPLY THE BEST!

Hot To Death Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Ciara herself gaver her blessings to this song and acknowledged THAT IT'S TOTALLY DIFFERENT. She loves Beyonce and thinks she's a great talent. Besides, EVERYONE feels Beyonce did this song more justice than necessary. SINGLE LADIES is about her telling you whores that a man should respect you and marry you if he wants to be with you. NO ONE has a more inspirational message out right now. EVERYONE THAT MATTERS IS LOVING BEYONCE RIGHT NOW because she's the real deal.

HATERS ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO DISCREDIT THE QUEEN BECAUSE HER TALENT TAKES OVER ALL OF THOSE WANNABEES.

CIARA Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

UMMM HELLO CIARA ALREADY DID THIS SONG 1000X TIMES BETTER...AND SINGLE LADY..MS KNOWLES IS NOW MRS CARTER..CAN SHE EVER BE REAL AND STOP WRITING SONGS..SHE THINKS PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR

Talent Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

How fitting is it that the same hater or two keeps posting the same comment that's already been factly proven by Toby Gad and BC Jean herself? How is it that any other artist that's given a song that was meant for another artist is viewed as business but with Beyonce SHE stole it?

Toby, BC Jean and Jesus Christ himself has explained that the song was created and given away to the person that the original owner wanted to hear sing it. AND SING IT SHE DID - she SANG the LYRICS off THIS joint AND added A FEW OF HER OWN AND GOT HER OWN WRITING CREDIT.

GIVE IT UP HATERS - LMAO.

BEYONCE IS ONE BAD B. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HER!

Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

How nice to have a hit single on your hands when you didn't write any of the lyrics or een apparently 'change' them (they are EXACTLY the same as BC Jean's version and sung with the same arrangement).

What happened to the saintly Miss Knowles? Not very God-fearing to steal someone else's work. Apparently Miss Knowles' lawyers have negotiated that she duet with BC as some kind of compensation. Think that admits some claim to fault don't you?

Disgraceful.

The song is great and it fits and speaks to all the women who have ever been hurt or disappointed. But, to her defense she's refering to the man who does not pay attention or treat their lady the way she should be treated. She's not referring to all men. However, if the shoes fit wear them so that you as a man will do better in the future. Otherwise, don't get offended by the shortcomings of "some" men. It's a great song and once upon a time I felt left out and ignored. But now, I have a man who is great. . . .yet I still can relate to the song. . .

Talent Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

Beyonce did just to this song. Good looking Toby. You knew who could pull it off (even though she changed and added lyrics slightly). Beyonce IS the best artist alive.

I was never really a Beyonce fan up until now. I thought her music sounded fake and shallow. This song, however, really struck a cord with me. She has really stepped up and showed that her music can be 3-dimensional. Kudos for B

aiashacole Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

all i can say is she's added to her list of hit songs....if i were a boy.. is number 1 on billboard's hot digital songs and number 3 on billboard hot 100...so yall out there keep hatin...so she can keep gettin better.....

Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

can girls not be supportive of each other...dang, we are so quick to tear each other down especially when someone is doing well for themselves. GREAT song beyonce! while there ar so many songs out there by men talking bad about women, we damn well deserve to have some of our own. i can list a number of cliche songs out there that stereotype women as well, so what's the big deal. people stop tripping and learn to give credit when it is due.

Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Deeply offended. She simplifies what it's like to be male, and ignores the fact that men can be hurt just as bad too. Horrible lyrics.

I like the song & the video. Seems like Beyonce actually experienced the lyrics.
