'America's Got Talent': The season finale!

Oct 2, 2008, 10:31 AM | by Mike Bruno

Categories: 'America's Got Talent'

Nealboydgottalent_l "Tonight a superstar is born!" Piers said in the intro to last night's America's Got Talent finale. A superstar? C'mon, dude. Too far. How about just, "Tonight someone's dreams will come true," or, "Tonight, someone's 15 minutes of fame will peak." But a superstar? Okay, anyone know who Terry Fator is? He's season 2's winner, and a damn fine ventriloquist (probably), but a superstar? Hell to the no.

At any rate, the point Piers was trying to make was that this was the moment we'd all been waiting for: the final episode when a winner would be announced. Frankly, it seemed like a task that easily could've been accomplished in 30 minutes. But American's Got Talent is a one-hour show, by golly, and there's no way they're gonna forgo whatever suspense they managed to muster lo these many weeks with anything less than a 60-minute party.

The festivities kicked off with the America's Got Talent Top 10 singing a group number that ended with a shot of little four-year-old Kaitlyn Maher singing the final note (aww...). Next up, Springer announced, was "one of the biggest selling artists in America -- no! Make that the world." One of the biggest "selling?" Hmm. Who could this McDonalds of the singing world be? Why, it was none other than...

More on AGT's season finale after the jump...

Leona Lewis! She was pretty decent, actually, in a generic pop/R&B kinda way, but I was distracted by the giant pimple the poor thing had on her chin -- well-camouflaged, but there was just no getting past the topographical challenge it posed.

The next few minutes were kind of a blur. I seem to remember a woman with giant, swinging breasts, a drag queen doing a damn good impersonation of Dionne Warwick, a tiny old lady wearing a tiara, and an endorsement for violin guys from Wyclef Jean. Having now typed all that, I have to wonder if I didn't briefly doze off and slip into some kind of talent-competition-show-induced dream state. In any case, when the booting finally began, Queen Emily was the first to go and, as I said in my recap last week, she delivered the least impressive final performance. Goodbye, sweet Queen. Next to get the axe, not surprisingly, was orange tan guy, Donald Braswell. Though he may not be headed to Vegas, there's a cruise ship gig out there with his name all over it.

Down to the Top 3. This is where it actually got interesting, as the remaining acts all had some discernible talent. I was actually kind of shocked when Nuttin But Stringz went out in third place. Their final performance was more style than substance, sure, but they totally brought the house down. I figured they were assured at least a spot in the final 2. (Shows what I know.) Although their journey ended before Vegas, hopefully they took some consolation from the fact that Springer told them "you guys are so cool." Big Jer didn't hold up his fist for a farewell bump, but you know he wanted to.

And then there were two. Honestly, I thought opera guy Neal E. Boyd was gonna go before violin guys, so at this point, I was pretty sure piano man Eli Mattson had it in the bag. Plus my wife couldn't stop going on about how "cute and good" piano man was -- which, of course, made me want opera guy to win all the more. I almost changed my mind, though, as they recapped opera guy's season and showed him weeping in the interviews, weeping after every other performance, and weeping on stage as he watched himself weeping on tape. I guess he's just sensitive, and real men cry and all that, but it still sort of annoyed me.

Apparently, America loves them some crying opera guy, though, cuz the dude freakin' won. I had to laugh by the face Sharon Osbourne made after the result was revealed. Is it me, or did she look flat-out disappointed? Lord knows my wife was. "He'll be fine, that Eli Mattson," she said as piano man congratulated opera guy, who thanked America, gave a shout out to Missouri, and yes, wept. For what it's worth, Mattson and Boyd did possess the most "talent" this season, and Boyd also seems like a really nice guy, so if someone had to win by half of one percent, I'm actually kind of glad it was him.

So there ya have it. Did America get it right by crowning Boyd? Was a superstar born tonight? Were you shocked when Stringz got axed at third place? Are you counting the days till Talent season 4? Why the hell wasn't there more Hoff in this final episode?

Donald Braswell's myspace shows he is a far better opera singer than Boyd. Braswell wasn't allowed to sing opera too much competition for Boyd. Braswell can sing anything in any language, great talent and, after AGT, performed in his own show in Vegas and performed in a one man show on PBS. He can sing opera, turn around in the next breath and sing an Elvis song better than Elvis. Fantastic voice and great showman.

Very Nice Site.It was my pleasure to visit your Website. I am also very Website you enjoy the article. And I also have the feeling that it was really a pity that we didn’t meet each other earlier. Because the kindness and warmth in your Website can make me completely relaxed and happy. I hope that you will visit my blog too to see if you can have the same feelinghttp://www.buynikeshoes.com

I am wondering if anybody knows how to contact Eli Mattson??? I know a girl that he used to be good friends with and I have one of his songs("baby doll") from years ago. I really loved the song- it touched me. I thought maybe he would want to get back in touch with her.

Kayte Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

I was shocked at the results and was wondering if anyone else was. Glad I found your blog. I also was annoyed at Neal's crying all the time. I wanted Eli to win. In my opinion he was the only one worth the million this season. I was a bit disappointed by the "talent" this season offered and almost stopped watching after Katlyn was voted off (she was just so darn cute i had to watch every week). But oh well. It's over.

Rolca Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Neal: Congrats to you, you are so talented. I voted for you all the time. I was picked on all my life about my weight. So don't let the fools ruin your singing. GOD BLESS you and your family.

nell Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

How sad for the losers. Most of us read a month ago that NEAL was going to win. I won't bother watching that show again....And Queen Emily was far
better!!!!!

susie Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

"We don't know what that unhealthy obese animal has been through in his life? They tell us every chance they get. Well listen up sugar, I have been physically abused, emotionally abused, survived 2 cancer surgeries and the loss of 3 children. I am not a fat animal!"

Wow, to whomever wrote that, I feel sorry for you...because the horrible things you have been through in life seem to have made you a bitter, mean and heartless person. I hope that you had people to lean on and show you compassion when you went through those things in your life, but it doesn't sound like it.

Dee Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

Neal is nice, good guy so you can't be mad at him but I like Paul Potts much, much better is act...Potts. I'd rather go see Potts sing because he was more moving. I'll also go see NBS. I'll be looking to see what NBS is doing in the future. Well it was a nice upscale gong show. This is what America's Got Talent has turned into anyway. Kind of glad this season is over.

To sedele Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

"As for Mr. Boyd I will buy Bocelli CD."
Why Bocelli? He is a popular "popera" singer but his attempts at real thing have been far from stellar. Why not Juan-Diego Florez or Roberto Alagna who are actually world-famous OPERA not popera singers?

blur Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

It's interesting (and somehow disturbing) to see how varied the Neal comments are, from "I'm so glad that he won; he is a pure, wonderful talent with a God-given voice!" to "Here's hoping that there's a buffet in Vegas for that blubbering lard-boy." You can see a lot in someone's personality with just one comment that they post here...a lot of people here really need to grow up. On a side note, it's nice to hear that Eli and Neal are friends.

blah Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

What is with all the double comments?

tbag Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

What the heck is going on on that picture. A fat guy being attacked by a giantic jacket and rectangular bullets? Sedele you are so right. Some of these folks here are GED dropouts and don't know that even opera singers need to sing on key, breath and MOVE!!!!! Luckily Neal just gets an appearance on a show cuase anyplace that books him will be sorely diappointed with the turnout. I suggest his fans buy some teeth, education, and lay off the fast food.

RealityCheck Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

GMAN's is the only comment I have read thus far that is on point. This year was just a repeat of Brittain's got Talent and was totally fixed. I almost stopped watching after I read the article on Paul Potts (who they are now making a movie about) and saw the comparison with Neal. Instead I forced myself to continue watching to see how far NBS made it. when they were eliminated 3rd I stopped the Tivo and deleted every episode of AGT I had saved. I only ventured here to make sure what I suspected had actually happened and it did. NEVER AGAIN! This show is an insult to my intelligence.

Sedele Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

I will quote the words of my husband, that duplicated my thoughts...

"Go figure, That is American's!" and the judges expressions also stated the same sentiment. Boyd is a wonderful singer, but far from being a professional opera act. Most of the people are commenting they will buy the CD, how about buying a plane ticket and concert ticket to go and watch him in Vegas...not as likely I am sure. He could not even hold the final note of the easiest opera song to sing. I am even more disappointed at the results after learning he has been singing professionally for years, yet he is still unable to hold his notes. That is not opera, that is Disney.

Eli or NBS are both Vegas acts, and those I would have paid to go see. As for Mr. Boyd I will buy Bocelli CD.

to Dioria Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

How true. You should also add that opera singers actually have to move and act. Not just cry (and eat).

Digit Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

I love you fools who try to justify Neal's talent by pointing out his $million. Well at $25,000 a year he won't even be able to feed himself and buy the 2 airline seats required. I make 3 times that and am not that ambitious. It's not all about $ for me, but I thought I should explain the math to you high school dropouts.

Yeah I guess you will be the same person after you lose the 100 (really). Just as ignorant as you are now. BTW Mary, it's DUE not do!!!!

Raisenet Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

Can't reqally comment on the finale since I stopped watching when the girl who kicked her dad in the nut's moved on and the 4 year old too. But I wouldn't go to Vegas for free to see that obese mediocre opera singing blubbering tubby.

scriptgirl Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Eli supporters can all calm down. Second place was what he actually wanted to get, frees him from contractual obligations to the show. Things are, in his words, "cooking right now, very very hot." He's absolutely going to have a record contract. AND let's be clear, he and Neal Boyd are friends, he invited Neal to perform with him this past July 4 (in Door County). He wanted Neal to win.

Diora Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Kelvin - whatever collegiate competitions Neal won in the past are in the past. They didn't lead to an invitation from ANY opera theater other that student theater. Also, these were NOT major international opera competitions like Operalia or Met Council Auditions. In today's opera world, tenors need to be able to compete successfully on an international stage to get anywhere.

Regardless of Neal's prior history, opera fans who say Neal doesn't sound like an opera singer judge not by the biography but by WHAT THEY HEAR - an off pitch at times, wobbly, poor breath support, poor diction, unable to hold last notes, etc. performance on an aria. We judge by what we hear. Sure, a singer can have one off night, but singing an aria BADLY three times...

Sure, I think Neal won fair and square. People today are so starved for beautiful classical music and for real voices that even a (very) flawed performance of an aria would move them. After all, most of those who watch AGT don't go to the Met.

Kim Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

I really enjoyed the show. But NTB should have one! I have been to Vegas and I would pay to see their show! They are so amazing with the violin! My 4 year old loves them also! They were on his tv show this morning Jack's Big Music Show on the Noggin channel! They were great! They are gonna be big!

Cate Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 03:04 AM EST

From the very beginning I felt moved to tears with every song sung by Neal E. Boyd! I thought I was not an opera fan, but Neal made a believer out of me. Neal, congrats! Please, do not lose that genuine and sweet character. It is a very rare and beautiful thing. Talent and humility.
Thanks for sharing your deepest soul with us every week. We are the ones that really won the contest-we got a chance to fall in love with you and your amazing voice!

Scott Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 01:00 AM EST

So... I can say that some parts of AGT are rigged or not necessarily true... (example is last year when my wife attended a taping live in Hollywood, she learned that MOST of the people in the audience at that taping were getting paid... that they were supposedly in Texas or Chicago... (but they were really in Hollywood)....

Past that, I was honestly supprised when strings didn't win it... I thought they had exhibited the most talent... and more importantly, they had demonstrated the ability to entertain an audience and keep it going for a longer show...

I think Eli will be offered some sort of contract as a result of his performances on this show...
Not sure what will really happen with Neil...

OK, Mr. Boyd, you won. Great job.You are an inspiration to those who dream, work hard and do what they set out to do!

Kelvin Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

People should do their research before mouthing off their opinions so that they don't look like misinformed morons. Neal won regional and national championships. He didn't just win AGT by luck. He has been paying his dues, working hard and winning some of the toughest singing competitions in the national school singing circuit. http://www.kansascity.com/news/breaking_news/story/823800.html

Kelvin Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:43 PM EST

Real people voted for Neal. It wasn't fixed. Do you know how many people in Missouri voted for him??? People who don't even watch the show voted because they know him. He was featured in the newspapers years ago. Check out. http://www.kansascity.com/news/breaking_news/story/823800.html

Oh My Gawd!!! Boyd is no Opera talent.
Even the phone salesman last season sang
Nessun Dorma with much better style and both pale....I repeat PALE into insignificance before greats like Lanza, Pavarotti, Carara and the like.
I was embarrassed for Boyd. He'd make anyone who listens to Opera Vomit!

Evelyn Landis Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

I enjoyed all of AGT. But I have a question for Mr. Bruno- is it the new journalism to try to embarass or denigrate those being written about? A pimple on her chin? A woman with large swinging breasts? A cruise ship gig? That's journalism? Not the school I went to.

Mary Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 07:15 AM EST

I guess I must be a little behind the times as I don't get what some of you found appealing about Nuttin But Strings. Two guys playing violins while jumping up and down, running to and fro and twirling about is not my idea of what makes an act. Either they were a dance team or a violin team but not both. As for being gracious winners, I didn't see that. They looked rather sour faced as if sore losers.

Elaine Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

I read all of the comments. A lot of good points. I didn't expect Neal E. Boyd to win but I can live with it. He's a great guy, his story and talent is compelling and he bowled us all over with his first performance. His crying just made us love him more. I'm praying that something good comes out of all of this for him.

NUTTIN BUT STRINGS WE LOVE YOU!

My favorite group was NBS...they were so thankful and humble even in losing...I had never seen anything like them. I loved Eli so much; he was different, refreshing and oh so talented! Ms. Emily was phenomenal! I thought she'd be right up there and was extremely surprised that Donald Braswell stayed in after her. The show did showcase his talent; but I think he needs to add to his repertoire. Don't want to be a "one hit" wonder.

It was a wonderful season and I wouldn't mind seeing it all over again. Just want to say thanks to all of the people who gave it their all. I agree that the judges should make the final choice.

I would have been happy with either Neal or Nuttin' but Stringz. I think they will make it, they have the potential to do many different things. Neal will appeal to the millions.. yes there are millions who love opera. And for those who could not see it, in those tears were a lot of pain and suffering.. a lot of it. And if you looked at his mother.. there is a lot of pain their too. There is some kind of untold story there and his journey in this show was some kind of cleansing as well as a great triumph. There is a reason he won. God bless him. I would go see any of the top 5. This time it was actually hard to choose who was going to win. But I split my vote between Neal and Nuttin'. But I love Eli also. I hope the Queen gets some kind of deal also..

Mars Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

My bad. I meant "Neil is not a millionaire".

Mars Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I loved Fator and his ventriloquist act. He had a good voice, a good sense of humor, and he's a good ventriloquist. Triple threat if I might say. I would definitely pay to see him in Vegas for 2 hours.
No, Eli is not a millionaire. It's like saying I'll be a millionaire in the next 40 years because the sum total of my gross earnings by that time will be a million. That sucks bigtime.
Sorry, I don't feel for Neil. I was rooting for Eli and NBS. Sure he sings good, but so do a lot of other singers out there. I'd rather buy a concert ticket for another singer than go to Vegas to see Neil. He's got a whole lot to prove, that one.
NBS on the other hand, has really good potential, especially if they have a choreograper and a stage manager. I can imagine all the scenes they can make. I love the violin. And no they're not the first one to make use of the violin this way. There's that Japanese girl with the red violin who plays classics in the modern version. There's The Corrs (one of my fave bands), and I'm sure some other bands that do it. The great thing I love about NBS is they are very physical and their love for the violin shows in their act. It's not just a musical instrument, but a part of them. It shows how comfortable they are dancing and moving around with their violin. I'd definitely shell out a few hundred bucks to see them live in Las Vegas especially if they get some Cirque du Soleil guests... or better yet, a Halloween show with spooky ambience and their brand of music.
Eli is good. Even though he needs some spit polishing. A couple of public concerts will take care of that. He's got real talent, that one. He just needs the experience to polish his performances. I won't be surprised if he gets into the pop scene soon.
I'm really sorry for Cas Haley. I know he's really good, but he is too specialized in a way. He needs people to back him up in his career: a good lyricist, a good composer, and a good manager. Sure people will pay you to sing the old songs they haven't heard in a long time, but that's not where the big bucks are. He needs to evolve, get his own brand of music out there that will set him apart from the rest of the singers out there today. I'm really rooting for you, Cas. I really hope you make it. It's such a waste to see a talent like you fade away.

Cindy Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

I really couldn’t tell you what constitutes a good Las Vegas act. I do know that I voted for the act that I enjoyed the most out of the final five – that was Neal Boyd. Obviously others felt the same way because he won. Wouldn’t people pay to see the act they enjoyed most? That remains to be seen. I am really a Neil fan and am very happy for his accomplishment. If you want to hear him sing and learn more about his personal life, you can visit his website at www.nealboyd.com

kristina Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

I love you Neal E. Boyd

Cilla Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Every fiber of my body is eternally grateful to America for realizing phenomenal talent and awarding 1st place to Neil E. Boyd! If there could be 2 winners, I'd select the violin playing brothers to be 1b. Eli and his piano, as well as, the violinist brothers will be given opportunities for great careers, because God is watching. - Again, my soul believes in Neil as a Vegas act of originality and pure talent. (p.s. I don't know him or anyone who does personally know him.)

Tangela Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

I watched almost every episode and I am highly disappointed in the outcome. Queen Emily was by far the most talented contestant. I was also upset that the judges made her hide her emotions at the onset, yet Mr. Big Neal could cry like a baby the entire season. Queen Emily had a touching and inspiring story that would have captivated the hearts of Americans. Since that seemed to be the ploy here. I could see directly through Neal’s so called insecurities and that sucked. America only voted for him, because of his horrible self-image. NBS and Eli were also great performers and much more talented than Mr. Big Boyd. This competition sucked and I don’t think that I will be viewing again.

JOHN Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Andrea Bocelli will be in San Antonio, TX
performing in a local theater in November I believe. I am quite sure that Bocelli will pay Donald a visit...
Donald is on his way to stardom!!!
Some are born to sing some are born to be a star...Donald was born to be a STAR.

Ralph Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

As good as he was voice-wise, I think voters forgot that the winner will get a Vegas contract.. And he's not Vegas material.. Stringz and Eli were!
What - more Hoff ?
So he can repeat "You're as American as the Olympic Games" ??
Forgive me - my Greek blood rebelled there :)

Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Ugh, what a disappointment. I was rooting for Eli and NBS, and I thought those two had it in the bag. I'd be happy if Queen Emily won, too. Neal is a good singer, don't get me wrong, but he is inferior to that of the likes of Paul Potts of BGT. Paul Potts actually made me tear up with his performances. Neal Boyd did not.

RC Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Mike Bruno, that had to be the most entertaining Talent search show final analysis I have ever read. You are indeed a funny guy. Keep up the good work!

Louise Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Congratulations Neal. You were my pick from the moment you opened your mouth to sing. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thought that NBS kept playing the same music with minor variations, and they were very poor losers as well. As for Eli,nice boy and he would make a nice lounge act. America did well with their vote, and voted for talent rather than a G.Q. image.

JW Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Ya know, the way I figure it, the winner actually loses. Eli (my #1 by miles)and NBS are now free to go off and work on their careers. Boyd is tied in to a Vegas gig and is probably contractually commited to AGT to perform all sorts of unnatural acts in public.

Well done to all.

PS: Next season get some new judges, Hasseldork is an embarrassment, Sharon is incapable of saying anything intelligent and Piers is an out of work journalist!

joejoe Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

I’m very disappointed with the result. I won’t watch this program or vote again.
Paul Potts was away…better than Neil. I think somehow they screw up the result and want to copy the success of Paul Potts in British’s Got Talent show. What a rip off!!!

To Mary Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST
You know nothing about lardo Neal except what this show lets you see. I heard he is a mean, spiteful person and the other contestants did not like him. I stopped watching quite a while ago becuase honestly if I go to Vegas I will see a real talent like Elton John or Celine. I can see Neal for free at the buffet.

Be careful of how you describe people. How do you know what he was like behind the scenes. Did it ever occur to you that perhaps he was rude do to how he was treated by others.

L.K. Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:14 AM EST

Eli Mattson has two cds out. one titled 'Monsters', the other, 'First Three'. I've heard the songs, Baby Doll, All I'll Be, and Let Go. They wonderful. He's got a beautiful voice and I hope he keeps working and I hear more. Wish him the best.

Shara Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

I'm happy for Neil, but I was rooting and voting for Eli. I enjoy his singing while playing piano. I hope he goes on to fulfill his dreams. Actually, I hope everyone in the top 5 get to go where they want with their talents.

Margaret Marshall Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:41 PM EST

The results realy sucks!!!! I would never go to Vegas to hear opera///I loved Nothing but string because they were diferent and entertainig but the best was Ely...he is a great artist, agreat musician, piano player, write his own music, the best voice, nice, educated, handsome...then the ruined it!!! Is the last time I see that program!!

mari Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

does anyone remember the website that jerry gave to get tickets to see neal in las vegas...

HT Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

I thought it was "definitely" between NBS and Elli, didn't even doubt a bit. I am shocked and disappointed.

mari Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

i am so thankful that neal won..i just think he was fantastic..i will be in line to buy his first cd...god bless him

Kay Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

First give it a rest people. Think about it, it does not matter who won because this comment string would still be the exact same only about whoever else won. Be happy with however well the person you wanted to win did. Screw complaining about what cannot be changed. And everyone who said something on the lines of "I stopped watching months ago" "I lost interest" please if that were true why would you have even cared to not only read this article but actually comment on it. Stop complaining about who lost. Personally, I loved Neal, but I love opera. I would have never thought an opera singer would have won, but he is fantastic. They all were. The show is not supposed to be the most talented person winning if that were the truth the judges would have picked the winner, it's a popularity contest, deal with it.

arlenematt Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:15 PM EST

I was truly hoping with all my heart that Americans had seen the pure talent that Eli Matteson possessed. He is so very talented and he could have easily held the interest of a hour and a half Las Vegas Billing Ticket. This could have been his step to stardom. He deserved it and I really liked his attitude after each song and listening to the judges. He didn't cry, he was a man. He could have carried his career to a higher level and people would really have paid to see him perform. I do think the votes were rigged because everytime I tried to vote, the lines were so jammed that I couldn't get my votes registered. Right up to the last few minutes, I kept getting a busy signal. Neal Boyd won, but I don't think he will be able to substain a Vegas show for a long amount of time. He needs to get himself into shape to make hisself more personable to the audience. I just hope Eli has some good offers coming his way that will still give him fame and future.

Camillia Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

I was shocked, and then turned off tv when NBS were eliminated. They made their talent of mastering a difficult instrument - the violin - seem effortless, and sound incredible with a twist. They also write their own music (not just do cover versions). Heard later BigBoy won the 40 year annuity. lol lol

Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

dude so true!!! pretty sad nuttin but stringz were cut, but the top 3 were exactly how i predicted, though they did not exit in the order that i had thought

Erin Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

ughhh America! stop choosing singers already! I get they're talented and what not... but seriously there were much more entertaining groups and acts. stop being so closed minded.

From Grumpy Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

You are right - this is AMERICA - and you have the right to say whatever you want - just remember the shoe may be on the other foot one of this days - be prepared. Put a smile on your face, accept defeat and move forward...............

ooops Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

All the finalists definitely have talent. Who has the most talent? Who can entertain for 1 1/2 hour? Personally I love classical music, opera, jazz... but I would only pay to see the string guys, they are special, original, write their own music, something new. There are many Neal like singers, and for Eli, go and listen to this piano man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VLUzIPOfLc

Paige Turner Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

Terry Fador won a million from AGT last year and renewed his Vegas contract for 100 mil. I seriously doubt if he cares who has heard of him or not. Eli was the best, IMHO,

To Sharron Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Again, you are a typical fan of this show. A funtional illiterate. How is that "mind thought"? lol

To Sharron Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

How can Neal sing with the three tenors? ISn't one dead? Oh yeah, thats right. You bumpkins probably wouldn't know the three tenors if they rang your doorbell. Tard.

Lost interest in the "cry baby" many weeks ago. Eli was great, as was Queen Emily, (she cried too, but with class) I thought Donald Braswel was sensational. He and Emily are what this program is about. Frankly, I was a disappointed in the outcome.

To Grumoy Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

You must be confused. This is America. You have the right to say whatever you want. I say this show is for mediocre talent that the ignorant mistake for real talent. The love for this show is in inverse proportion to the education level of the posters. You are proof.

Malvina Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

You like thunder, like an Angel...How lucky is your mom holding you.God send you for us.

Sharron Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

Victoria - lots of folks who appreciate the classics and all types of music. Eli also was very good and he will go far along with the Nuttin But Strings were also very good. I'm sure they will also go far with their career. Check out Pavarrati sometime; he is very close to that level. Many of the present singers also sing opera; what about Josh Groben - beautifully trained in New York and Italy and does a lot of opera; but also ballads. Don't close your mind to something you may not have experiences. This is just mind thoughts for you.

jordan Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

i thought this letter was funny and i had to keep reading good job!

victoriawoolfe2 Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

Eli should have won Who wil pay to see Neil in vegas for 1.5 hours?

DanOregon Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

The show is fun until it starts taking itself too seriously. Clearly Simon Cowell booked most of the celebrities who appeared on the final show, happy for Boyd, hoping (expecting) to be hearing more from Mattson and Stringz (maybe Rosie can book them for her show) but the thing that most annoys me is the winner gets ONE show and an annuity of $1 million over 40 years. I'm not optimistic anyone other than the four-year old would see the end of that one. Of course taking a cash payout of $350,000 or so doesn't sound so impressive. But seriously 40 years???

terrie Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Hi Mary;
Remember I said sarcasm intended. I don't think you read the whole message; please reread the end of the message. I was using a word several others have used. In any event, I'm overweight by about as much as you and am also trying to get it off--(with success so far)believe me I fully understand the difficulties encountered with being overweight; I know others will have more comments. The intent was to point out that it is not called America's Got Talent Beauty Contest and that people voted him in. And he deserved the win. Good luck with your diet. Peace.

Sharron Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

Congrat to Neal, you were wonderful and I was pulling for you all the way. I was a picked on kid too and it's not easy to overcome teasing, comments and looks; but YOU DID IT WITH YOU VOICE. I look forward to hearing you singing with the Three Tenors. Thank your HS Coral director for getting you to use that voice. To those of you had to be hurtful, you must be the bullies in your school, you need help and deep counseling because you evidently are very insecure. Possibly a "Music Appreciation Class 101 would help too! GO GET HIM NEAL.

Jacob Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

My vote was split between Eli and Neal. Stringz was just a circus act that would get boring real fast. What I am annoyed at is the childish nature of author's writing. A dig here, a poke there does not add flavor to the article. It just pisses off the reader. Congrats Neal ad Eli. I suspect they'll both go far.

deaf ear Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

question:
I never liked opera but loved Pavarotti. Am I crazy or does Neal sound like him?

Mary Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

This is to Terrie again, I am sorry for saying shame on you. I just don't like labels such as a person being "fat". A person is always a human being regardless of size, religion, color of skin, etc. We all should be treated the same. I too am shunned as I am 100 pounds overweight. Working on a rigid exercise program and hope to have lost the weight in about 1 year to 1 1/2 years. The point is I will be the same human being thin as I was fat.

Mary Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Terrie - SHAME ON YOU.

terrie Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

I guess it's too bad that America has a democratic process called the vote...really a shame that someone fat with a tremendous voice won over someone with gorgeous eyes...just ain't fair. (sarcasm intended)

Eli will be fine, he'll sell; he'll go far. Q Emily will have a career. Donald has a beautiful voice and will have no trouble, and NBS will be famous. As for Neal, I thought he was great and I hate opera; after hearing him I may just listen to some more. I think Neal deserved his win, and no, he wasn't my 1st choice either. Face it, all 5 were spectacular; I wish I had even a 100th of their talent...
p.s. for anyone who has been put down by someone else: consider: when you cut someone down it's to make YOU feel more powerful (that thing called control). If you have to make someone else feel bad in order to feel good about yourself, who do you suppose has the problem...?
Congrats Neal!

Mary Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

I am truly disappointed in America. We all had our favorites. I am shocked at the number of you who posted that are so hateful and I do mean hateful that your choice did not win. I was for Neal from the first and do you know why, because he is humble and down to earth. So is Eli. Must be the way those of us in the Mid West were raised. To be kind and thoughtful of others. As for the guys playing the violins, just what was that all about. A million dollars for jumping around and a Vegas show for that. Think not. Even when they came in 3rd, there wasn't even a smile. Like the most of you posting arrogant posts, they two showed a snotty sore loser face.

Janet Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

Now this guy can sing better:

To Mallman Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

Over 40 years.....That's only 10,000 big macs. Neal will starve. Compare to terry Fator's 20 million dollars a year. If Paul Potts and Neal show up at the same venue, close the buffet.

gman Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

i saw britans got talent last year with the story of paul potts he was a real success story.as soon as i saw this guy neal sing the same song i knew the season was gonna end with america copying the same success story its ridiculous.i was amazed after seeing paul potts.i didnt feel neal at all he doesent compete at all .the winnner should of been eli mattson by far he would be a big las vegas act i would never pay to see neal i dont think i would go even it was free. nothing but a big cry baby maybe eli should of cried a few times what a joke .probably wont watch the show anymore.

AG Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

Talent is talent, America voted! Let's face it, they all were good, and they all will have a great career. Lay off off the bashing. It makes me sad to see that Amerians can't be happy for a winner.

Not Pleased Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Actually my favorites in the beginning were Paul Salo (Frank Sinatra impersonator), Jonathan Burkin (baton twirler), the trombone guy and Nothin' But Stringz. But then Trombone Guy screwed up his semifinal performance with an off-key trombone, and stupid David Hasselhoff chose Elvis boy instead of Baton Boy.

mallman Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

If you read the small print you would see that the winner does not receive one million dollars lump sum, they receive $25,000 for 40 years. As far as Neal winning, when he gave his very first performance on AGT he gave me goose bumps. None of the other performers did. Nice guys do finish first, especially gifted nice guys. Congratulations Neal!

gen Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

Did anyone notice that when the credits rolled there was an announcement that the 1 million dollars is paid over 40 years! Do the math, $25,000 a year. I would not turn down an extra $ 25,000 a year, but how can AGT claim a "million dollar prize" with a straight face?
Eli will make more than that in a minute! Eli writes plenty of his own songs too, but AGT does not feature original songs. We had a great summer in Door County, thanks Eli!

Patty O'Furniture Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

I'm just curious to know if anybody else heard the story about how weeks ago, near the beginning of this season, Piers got drunk and blabbed to someone that Neal was going to win, the whole thing was fixed, and that there were already plans for Neal and Paul Potts, the winner of Britain's Got Talent in 2007, to sing together in Vegas.

my two cents Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

My prediction for 4th and 5th was dead on. Would have been happy with any of the top three to come out on top, but think NBS' 3rd place was appropriate. All are extremely talented in their own way. When faced with equal or near equal talents, my vote goes to the 'nice' guys. NBS just came off as too cocky to me whereas Neil and Eli were so down to earth, and simply humble, nice guys. I'm sure the NBS brothers are great guys, but again, something has to distinguish them and I think perhaps that may be why they finished 3rd.

I'm not an opera fan per se, but I appreciate the art and the talent, and enjoy a fabulous voice. The world lost the great talent of Luciano Pavaratti this year...I think Neil could be the next Pavaratti and said so every time I heard him perform.

Each one of the remaining top 5 will do well down the road. I'm sure their phones have been ringing for weeks now.

Katherine Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

I wanted either Nuthin' But Stringz or Eli Mattson to win. Opera Guy is just another version of Paul Potts. They basically sang the same song - Nessum Dorma. At least Stringz was pretty original and Eli Mattson was channeling Elton and Billy so he definitely could have been a Vegas headliner. BOOOO this season blowed.

mslovey Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

YES I WAS SHOCKED WHEN NOTHING BUT STRINGS GOT AXED!!ARE YOU KIDDING?WHO ELSE DOES WHAT THEY DO?GRANTED NEAL SINGS FANTASTIC.BUT COME ON NOW.HATS OFF TO NOTHING BUT STRINGS!!!!!TAKE A BOW FELLAS WELL DONE!~!!!!!!!

n/a Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Once again, America proves its inability to vote.

linedancer Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I heard a rumour a couple of weeks ago that Neil would win. Apparently, Piers got drunk one weekend and blabbed it out. He wants to send him on tour with the tenor who won Britain's Got Talent.

WallaWalla Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

I just watched Britain's got talent and they do it much better over there.
The auditions and prelims re the same but they steer the voters to vote a final 5 that always includes a very young singer, a cute teenage country or folk singer, a specialty act (ventriloquist or musical group), Balladeer, and a Fat Opera singer. Occassionally, they include a Soul singer. Then they rotate winners so they don't end up with too many ventriloquists or Fat Opera Stars.
It could work here if given the chance. IMHO!
