Will Adele's 'SNL' performance lead to a huge sales spike?

Oct 20, 2008, 01:41 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: British things, Music, Saturday Night Live, Things That Are Awesome!

For two months now, I've been casually listening to Adele's album 19 -- it makes excellent background music while writing TV Watches. But it took two powerhouse performances on this week's Sarah Palin Presents: Saturday Night Live to make me truly appreciate this cheeky (yet quite stage-frighty) pile of cuteness. The striped dress, the cardigan, the Day-Glo nails, the fact that unlike many female pop stars these days, she appeared to have eaten in the last 24 hours -- suffice it to say that now I love Adele even more. Check out the video for her second single, "Cold Shoulder," below.

The 20-year-old Londoner, who has "always been a size 14-16, and been fine with it," saw 19 go platinum in the UK. After the double appearance on an SNL that received record ratings, I can't imagine U.S. buyers will give her the cold shoulder. Will you be giving her some love? And can she crack the notoriously unforgiving U.S. radio market?

Very Nice Site.It was my pleasure to visit your Website. I am also very Website you enjoy the article. And I also have the feeling that it was really a pity that we didn’t meet each other earlier. Because the kindness and warmth in your Website can make me completely relaxed and happy. I hope that you will visit my blog too to see if you can have the same feelinghttp://www.buynikeshoes.com

I can't remember when I first heard one of Adele's songs, but the Grammys made me have another listen. I fell in love with Adele. I can't believe how poetic her lyrics are. Her voice is by far one of the best ever. Pure and clear. I hate that I found her so late. I play her CD in the car, my Ipod and at home. I'm addicted to Hometown Glory and Daydreamer!!!!!!!

Fan Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

I was taken when I first heard her sing on SNL and wanted to buy her cd, which is rare, almost non-existent, for me to buy a cd, but then they re-aired it on SNL so I bought the cd today and I absolutely love it. The music and her vocals are unique and quite relaxing for music these days. You go Adele!

StingRae Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

That was my first time hearing and hearing of Adele....and my honest opinion is that she is the SHYT!!!! Wow, what a sensational vocalist. You go damn you....you go!...You've got a new fan for life!!

Arj Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Well how strange? Palin and Adele on the same bill..I don't think that either the UK or USA have a better scene but feel that it is just more generic in the USA as there is a habit of similar acts that are so rent-a-rap, for example Maria Feat. JZ Feat Common Feat Marj J et al and it all sells really well. I love Mary J as do a lot of Brits but I it is refreshing to see a lot of young British females doing well in the USA. Although they maybe similar in genre they have usually writers or co-writers credit and have their own personality stamped on the records. That said Natasha Beddingfield and Leona Lewis (wait until she writes her own songs- and she can!) are more palatable for USA tastes but less imaginative. If you looking for good unique British talent start with Kate Bush! ..oh and watch out for Laura Marling ..she is amazing and only 18 peace and well done for getting a new President!

Luisa Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

I'm glad I searched her, after I saw her in SNL and last Sunday Morning in ABC.. what a beautiful voice..

Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Now, now everyone. Let us stay on topic and attempt to be objective. It is such a disappointment to read that there are still people out there who choose to focus on comparing artists and pitting them against one another, instead of simply critiquing them as individuals. Try giving credit where credit is due. Adele is extremely talented and I commend her for living out her dreams. Adele, carry on with your head held high. Remember that those who choose to step on the dreams of others typically do not have the courage to live out their own. Your success is the best defense and it will always outshine the negativity and hatred.

rey Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

hey all i am a puerto rican male from brooklyn ny and this chick make my hair stand. like many saw her on SNL and was intrigued. have the album now and listen to it constantly. but dont let anyone know LOL... look forward to more music of hers

nicole Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

lovvvvvve her! Thank you London for sharing your talent!

Amy Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

She sounds like Amy Winehouse. Something in the water over there?

Varris Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I've had her album for many months (bought as import) and LOVE it. I only saw her performance of Chasing Rainbows on SNL, which I admit, was fabulous. I saw her live in a little club in Chicago, with only a bassist and guitarist. She sounded just as good, but obviously, with a more stripped down souond. I loved the huge band sound, and thought she did a good job, but if she gets stage fright, she hides it exceedingly well. She was funny and personable and just plain adorable when I saw her.

B Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

I've seen people on SNL boards and IMDB say they hadn't heard of her before SNL, but they went out and bought her CD. I'm sure it gave her some exposure. I really enjoyed her peformance.

Leslie Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Love love love Adele - have been listening to her CD for months now. She cancelled a large amount of US shows this fall for personal reasons. I hope she comes back soon! Anyone who thinks she is copying anyone else clearly hasn't listened to her album - it is a true original.

nellie Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I saw her on SNL and her second song i could barely understand what she was saying. Yes she is a good singer but it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Stephanie T. Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

She looks bigger than a 14, but then again the camera adds pounds. She kind of reminds me of Alison Moyet because she has this powerful bluesy voice like Alf. Addy will be around for a while.

David Dyer Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

After 94 posts, I am sure this has been said, but I love Adele so much I have to chime in. I also got Hometown Glory from itunes and loved it. So I picked up 19 (with the bonus live disc which is really good) and cannot stop listening to it either. I hope tons of people go out and buy it. It is not quite as good as Back to Black, but I think with a little work and a great producer, Adele could hit it really big.

LAU LEE Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

I THINK THAT ADELE IS NOT A BAD SINGER ALONG WITH DUFFY WHO HAS A UNIQUE SINGING VOICE. BUT ONE THING IS FOR SURE THEY ARE NO WHERE NEAR AS TALLENTED AND SUCCSESSFUL AS AMY WINEHOUSE. AMY MAY NOT BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL BUT FOR TALLENT SHE DOESN'T EVEN COME CLOSS TO ADELE OF HOW GOOD SHE IS. AMY ROCKS!!!

Katie Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I've been listening to Adele for months now. She has a wonderful voice and I love her music. She was adorable on SNL.

Lee Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

Jasmine,

I'm sorry you were offended by what seems to be a compliment. She was praising Adele for her wonderful figure and for being a refreshingly strong role model for young women. As someone who has struggled with my weight, I understand that it's easy to jump at the slightest mention of someone's size, but I find it's easier to be insulted by...insults. Being insulted by compliments is too draining.

Snsetblaze Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

I love her album as well. Bought it a couple of months ago. She's not really like Duffy (who I also like). I would compare her more to Beth Orton and Dido.

myattbell.com Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Great Performance. Though I wished she played "Hometown Glory"

Anthony Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

I agree. I've casually had Adele's album but haven't listened to it much. Her performance on SNL brought me chills. No more chasing pavements for me.

Jasmine Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Can't we just say that the girl has a beautiful voice and leave it at that? Why does Annie Barrett have to point out that she's overweight. The girl is talented but, by the way, she's a size 14-16. If this girl was a size 4 no one would ever mention her size, how much she weighs, etc. Fat girls can't be talented? As a fat girl I'm insulted, Ms. Barrett. And as a woman you should be ashamed.

dannymalt Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

I Tivo'd SNL. And I fast forwarded thru her performances. Ah well.

trish Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

iTunes offered her "Hometown Glory" as one of it's free singles of the week earlier in the year, and it was one of the best they've ever offered. You could tell Adele was a special young woman and a great new talent. I'm thrilled for her that she got such great exposure on SNL. Let's hear it for singers who look like real people and can actually SING and sound great without a lot of electronic manipulation.

JamesFromRochester Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

She really was quite phenomenal. I've had her album for quite a while now and am more impressed with every new listen. She has a classic voice that really can transcend genres. Not to mention, on SNL she was absolutely adorable. Unfortunately, I don't think American Pop-buying public will ever fully embrace her. Her best chance would be to find a successful niche a la Norah Jones.

phredd! Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

I purchased "19" months ago after seeing her videos for the amazing "Chasing Pavements" and "Hometown Glory". And I mean I went out to a store and bought the actual CD, not just buy a download, which is rare for me these days. She is simply incredible. I hope more people take notice of this truly unique and gifted singer.

Jeffrey Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

Too bad American Idol introduced "pitchy" into the vernacular, because people like zenbob below use it to look like they know what they're talking about. Adele is not "pitchy". She's a very gifted singer, much more skilled than 90% of successful American recording vocalists. BTW "pitchy", if it had a definition, would mean "having pitch", which would cover anyone singing both on- or off-pitch, in other words, everyone.

ElectAPromQueen? (maybe not) Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 05:37 AM EST

Her album is in indeed flawless, checked it out last year. Do Buy 19 it is a modern day classic album. And how refreshing to hear a singer nowadays sing live that good. She will see spikes in sales and I am happy for her SNl moment. These are the kind of artists the media should be talking about more.

LizetM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 05:17 AM EST

Wow, she's pretty good. I'll definitely give her a album a shot. :)

jen Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 04:37 AM EST

British music is light years ahead of American.

Delon Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 04:01 AM EST

I haven't been paying much attention to Adele, but her SNL performances really made me take notice of her. Somebody below said that she is a third-rate Duffy. I don't think so. Duffy's voice is nowhere near Adele's. I usually don't watch the musical performances on SNL, but Adele was one of the few that i did. I also liked her stage presence. Nothing flashy or insincere. Understated and lovely.

Marshall Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

heck no, she is wayyyy too interesting and talented for US Radio. Don't be stupid.

Mar Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 01:26 AM EST

Even though I love The Killers, Adele has been my favorite SNL musical guest this season and probably this year in general. She showed that she can sing live just as great as on CD, and I certainly hope to see a spike in sales.

Joseph Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 01:11 AM EST

i have been LIVING for this CD for the past 5 months! Adele is HOT! Love her voice, love the video, love the performances this weekend. Here's to AMAZING sales!!!

Dhppy Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

I had been anticipating her album's stateside release at the beginning of this year and had been checking out her live performances on Jools Holland online. She's been worth the research. I'm so glad she landed such a highly rated show.

neo Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

i just read that pophangover is giving an autographed copy of adele's latest LP. not my type of music but hey, anyone interested go sign up by leaving a comment:

tg Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:59 PM EST

I am SO glad she was on a night with big ratings. I turned some friends on to her a couple months ago. What a cool voice. What a great performance. She seemed to enjoy herself. Her cd is excellent. Great job, Adele!! And to think she's only 19. Wow.

Mike Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

watch out world..she is a HUGE talent

will win grammy with Adele `19.....

A few, just a handful, has talent like her...she is so original YET she draws inspiration from Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and the era of the 1960s..

She pretty but not by Hollywood standard of the thin waif blondes..she is lovely just the way she is...Adele just be yourself..and do not change..you do not need the American market..you still will be a huge success..of course I hope you conquer this side of the Atlantic.

robert Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

She appeared on MTV Canada earlier this year and I bought the CD right after that performance. It is an amazing CD. The song Hometown Glory is mesmerizing!!

Troy Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

I've been hooked on Adele for a couple months now and have already spread the word as much I can ... she is authentic & incredibly talented. I am hoping that her performance on SNL which left all my friends in awe, will propel her to the stardom she so deserves.

Melinda Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

I was blown away by her performance on SNL and became an instant fan. I haven't been able to stop listening to her songs! Her voice is unique and one of a kind!

Gabby Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:51 PM EST

As usual, there are a bunch of pitiful losers on here taking cheap shots at anyone who is doing something remarkable with their life. This girl is really talented, and I won't insult her by comparing her to Amy Winehouse- Amy lost my respect when she decided that a crackpipe was worth more than her singing career.

Gretchen Weiners Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

I forgot to mention that the British music scene is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the American music scene.

Gretchen Weiners Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

I have been in love with Adele since 19 came out in the UK last year. I think she's incredible. Hometown Glory is a stunning vocal performance. And I dare any of you to listen to Make You Feel My Love and not get a little choked up!

lucy2 Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

I've been listening to her for a while now, I love 'Hometown Glory'. I was happy to see her on SNL, I think when people with genuine talent are promoted.

Annabp Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

Wow where has she been hiding and why had I not heard her before SNL? I was awstruck by her magnificent, raspy voice. Her vocals are a measure of Chrisette Michele, Ledisi, Lena Horne with a hint of Angie Stone/Jill Scott. This girl has something to say! This girl is HOT! She looks great and is so cool. I really really have to like a artist to purchase their music, trust me, I will be excitedly getting the "19" album and requesting it for airplay on stations in my area. Much success Adele!Keep up the electrifying work...you sizzle!!!

popcorn Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

OMG she looks JUST like Ron Howards daughter....it took me forever to think of who she resembled!

Kathryn Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

Right after I saw her perform "Chasing Pavements" I went on itunes and bought her album. Absolutely fantastic!

ceb91639 Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

Does anyone know where I can find video of Adele's SNL performance? I missed it and I really wanna see it.

dma69 Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Nice change of pace from the skinny, bland, Disney-fied crap we're subjected to. I hope Adele becomes a star. She deserves it.

northern Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

I liked her - sort of Dusty Springfield-ish.
Doesn't matter her size - her voice is awesome.

San Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

I've been listening to Adele for months, she's awesome and deserves much more attention!

Joe T Plummer Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Yohannon Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

From Sleeeeve (Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST)

"Her large appearance on SNL won't do anything to increase sales. Until she loses weight, I won't be buying anything she sings."

Because, obviously, how attractive a recording artist is makes a huge difference in the quality of their singing or playing.

[snark] Makes one wonder how The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, or Joe Cocker expect to make ANY money looking the way they do. [/snark]

Don't let the door hit your posterior regions on the way out.

Ron Wiles - Indie Music Show Host Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

I like Adele,

She seems to have a lot of talent and her songwriting is very good...

I don't see her being a Amy Winehouse wannabe like some others.

FYI - I host a podcast that has some killer talent, check it out here...

mrclean Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

I fell in love with her when I saw the show. head over heels baby

Yohannon Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

My fiancee, Roni, and I were checking out SNL when Adele came on -- either the musical act is someone we know we hate (skip it! Yay, TiVo!), we like (hell yes, I want to see Deathcab for Cutie!) or don't know. If it's someone we don't know, we give the act a chance to intrigue either of us.

I agree with the contention that she's a plus-sized HOTTIE -- both Roni and myself were pleasantly surprised by that right off. Roni's a trained singer, so whilst she sounded great to my untrained ear, I'm always curious what Roni's take on a singer's skill is. Even with her tendency to nitpick, she gave Adele high marks.

Huzzah!

Kara Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

I can't decide if I like her or not. I love that she is not a twig, but I just don't know about the music. I am swaying to the music at one point and at another it's grating my nerves!!!

Sleeeeve Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

Her large appearance on SNL won't do anything to increase sales. Until she loses weight, I won't be buying anything she sings.

yesshe will Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

This is my first exposure to Adele. Wifey and I both said that she'd get some sales from SNL. What a killer voice. Kinda reminds me of Fergie's tonality.

Astroturfer Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I think astroturing, astroturf, fake, astroturf comment.

Tra Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Guys, guys guys...it's "Hey this is Adele and I'm trying to be Amy Winehouse"...and again...and again...that's it...and it is getting boring. Anyone remember a good band ripping it up on SNL...I mean really. I mean fresh stuff that makes you go "wow". When Adele came on, I hit fast forward.

Luisa Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

I had never heard of Adele before SNL, but she actually made an impression on me, while I usually ignore artists I don't care about that performing on the show. She has an amazing voice, a distinct sound, and I loved her sparkly silver dress and eye shadow! Maybe I'm just obsessed with shiny things that way...but I really hope she breaks through here.

Brent Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

God...the Amrican market with it's DULL "top 40." She has being played on groundbreaking stations such as KCRW and the like in excess of a YEAR! She was nominated for the Mercury Prize and this debate is just happening now. Adele is an amazing talent vocally and live...I turn on XM's "20-on-20" every once in a while to stay aware of what is "popular" its nearly unendurable to listen to an hour of it. It is amazing to me that 80% of all the music (in all the genres: hip-hop, alternative, pop rock) is absolutely derivitive and reductive and a repetitive fragment of the quality music that IS out there...but doesn't have a pretty face or a glam/gansta persona behind it. From lyricism to "beats" I am increasingly impressed with the unsophisticated appetitite of the contemporary top 40 commercial listener.

Liza Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

I'd never heard of her before SNL on saturday. I thought she was Amazing. She sounds AND looks great!

zenbob Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Much Ado About Not Much, Really

At a time when original and talented singers are drowned out by mediocrity of the media-driven MPA, it's a good thing to give someone like Adelle some good media access. She is a bit pitchy and inconsistent, not a knockout performer, but then again, those are very rare. She is neither truly exceptional or truly awful, she is pleasant, she is talented...just not a "superstar" and I am not saying that this is the only qualification for TV appearances, by any means. At least what she does is real music, shows depth and exposure to blues, jazz, etc., but it's not all that memorable. In Britain they still require early school musical, artistic education, unlike in the now totally shallow USA. American youth have to fend for themselves, and with the over-the-top influences of hip-hop (hey, some are pretty good, but still, it's not classical or jazz), rap and pop, well, it's no surprise the British are invading again. Let's put music back into education!

Pavement Diva Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

My daughter introduced me to Adele a few months ago. Her husband is British and has known Adele from the air play she got in the UK. I really love her vocal stylings since you can see who her musical influences are. She appeared on SNL to be a very demure, sweet young woman. I'm also happy to see she is a real woman...you know...with curves rather than an anorexic, drug addicted freak. I found her refreshing and just order 19 from Amazon. At age 20 I feel as though those who are overly critical need to take a step back and think about what she will sound like in 5-10-12 years. I happen to believe she will sound freakin' incredible.

Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

She's very talented. She can actually sing. I'm disappointed in the comments here that indicate she won't make it because she's not dancing. Those folks don't get it. Adele is a singer, not a pop tart. I predict a big bump in sales for her.

EnoughAlready Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

All she's lacking is a decent voice. Haven't we had enough of this mess? Lord knows none of these princesses can top Amy Winehouse's pipes but those record execs just can't stop trying.

The Magster Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

I'm nearing 60 (yikes!) and watched SNL to see the Palin appearance, but absolutely fell in love with Adele! She has an incredible voice and I love the all female string section! But, I gotta say, it pained me at the end of each set when she stepped back and tried to melt away! "Be Proud, Adele!" You've got a lot of talent. I hope my kids give me her album for Xmas!

Liz Dexia Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

Third-rate Duffy, which ain't saying much. Product like this is the lowest, bottom-feeding most cynical pop music. While this was on, my PBS station showed Bettye LaVette on Austin City Limits. To hell with Adele AND Sarah Palin.

Dwainedibbly Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

I hadn't see or heard of Adele before the SNL appearance, and now I'm hooked! Wow! Yes, her performance will result in a "huge sales spike" in my household.

Dido? She's way better than Dido in my opinion, and we're fans there, too.

gstockton Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

I have been a huge fan of Adele's prior to her even having an album. I had the great fortune of seeing her live in LA and meeting her in person. She is totally authentic, what you see is what you get. I think she will be a really big star. She is no Amy Winehouse, she's way better, though, I think both of them are graduates of The BRIT school for the arts.

Steve Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

The reason all the good music is coming from the UK is because they aren't affected by the disposable-pop emo and hip-hop acts pushed on us by Clear Channel thanks to payola.

Cici Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

Didn't see SNL but really love Adele because she isn't trying to sing and dance unlike Beyonce and Rhiannna. She is a singer bottom line and it's nice to see that showcased every once and awhile.

MGMG Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

She is NOT copying Amy Winehouse. She's an original. Her SNL performance was the 1st time I ever saw her perform her music and I was instantly smitten. In a time where sometimes just being sexy qualifies as talent Adele is a breath of fresh and pure talent!!! ADELE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ex-Vegan Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

I discovered Adele about 3 months ago, too, and like many torch singers, her soulfulness and sorry comes through in each song. She reminds me of Alison Moyet from back in the day (80s).

I am happy to see the U.K. export such great female talent (e.g. Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Duffy, Adele, etc.). These are all women who don't have to hide behind fancy dance moves and slick personas to prove they're truly talented. To channel Simon Cowell: It's about the singing, stupid.

jscott Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

I missed most of SNL that night but I switched it over just in time for Adele's second performance. I downloaded it immediately and have been listening to it ever since. I love it!

stewart Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Didn't anyone remember her from So you think you can dance? katee and joshue performed to her "Hometown Glory", an incredible song. I really like Chasing pavements too, but was disappointed she didn't do hometown glory on SNL.

To Stella Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Did you not see the performance? How are they anything alike? Please enlighten all of us, because I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know.
As for me, I've been meaning to get her album for a while now, although I have a few singles already. Chasing Pavement is one of my favs.

Stella Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

She is merely copying Amy Winehouse.

Rich Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Her voice is OK, but her performance was terrible. She did not move, in a time of Beyonce, Rihanna and Mariah. Forget it, this girl has no chance. She will be forgotten about in a few months. Back across the pond for you...

Christopher Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I love Adele and have had 19 playing for months -- I actually thought she was pretty awful on SNL though. She was really out of tune on the lower parts of Chasing Pavements. The second song was better, but she is definitely not an exciting performer. I don't think the SNL performance was good enough to do much for her -- unfortunately

adele shouldn't expect a post SNL performance bump...it wasn't that memorable of a performance...doesn't mean should she stop singing altogether or she should consign herself to doing commercial music...the US market is a tricky beast and some find UK acts have not had traditional success on the US charts.

She sounds nothing like Furtado! Maybe ProTool'd Furtado, but not scratchy-warbly live Furtado. Adele is for real.

With her hair a throwback to Dusty Springfield, Adele has conquered America. She is one of the best singers to come out of England since, well let's just say it, Dusty Springfield! Her performance on "SNL" was the first time I heard of her. I am out the door to buy Adele's "19." Adele, keep your soulfulness 4-ever alive!
Hope I get to hear you in person one day.

Sounds just like Nelly Furtado. Nothing new to see here. Keep moving.

My husband and I had never heard of her, let alone any of her songs, but we're going to get her album now. We loved her voice!

I really enjoyed Adele'e proformance on SNL. She is a great talent. And was such a shy thing after each song. Just wanted to hug her. Hope she has a great future.

Oh yeah - she's a great role model. Read her comments about how much she likes to drink and have sex. That's what we need for our youth.
She's from the same machine as Amy Winehouse. They went to the same performing arts school.

Re: possible increased sales

No. And this is due, largely, to the
fact that she sucks.

I bought her CD on iTunes after her second performance and have listened to it a few times since then. I love the quality of her voice!

I DVRd SNL and watched it when I got home Sat night/Sun morning just to watch Palin. I fast forwarded through most of the show, but for the first time in about 5 years I actually listened to the musical guest. I love this woman! She is gorgeous, has hot pink nails, and sounds like a much better/sober Amy Winehouse. I am definitely buying this album on Itunes!

Wow, the girl is amazing her music is so relaxing. I went and bought her album the next day. Thnx to SNL i have discovered a great artist

Sara Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

I agree, she should have sung "Hometown Glory" at SNL hands down. Her voice was lacking from when I've heard her before.

And no, I'm not buying her album; I already bought some songs on ITunes and while they're awesome, some are just so-so.

brett Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I completely agree. I have had her CD for the past two months and have just been listening to it when the iPod decides to shuffle it my way. This SNL performance has renewed my excitement about the smooth voiced big girl.

Jenn Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

I had no idea that she sang those two songs when I saw her. I hear those songs all the time at work, and now I'm glad I know who sings them. Can't wait to buy the album.

Adele gave a decent performance on SNL, but the album has to have the songs to put it over the top and it just doesn't have that. Especially with Duffy and Estelle, Adele with have to deal with just having a notable song, "Chasing Pavements", stateside.
