The five broadcast TV shows you're most 'emotionally attached to'

Brothersandsisters_l Last week, Media Life Magazine reported on a new study from Marketing Evaluations, The Q Scores Company, which measured and ranked viewers' emotional attachment to broadcast TV shows during the '07-'08 season. ("Emotional attachment" was defined as how committed you are to continuing to watch a show.) This list of the 20 series that garnered the greatest devotion (I've included it after the jump) definitely got EW's TV department talking.

And that conversation got me thinking: Let's do our own informal poll for the '08-'09 season: Name the five broadcast TV shows you are most committed to watching this fall. (I know we all love our cable, so this may hurt a little.)

My list:

1. Fox's Bones (for those of you wondering where the PopWatch love has been, Abby West will be bringing it back starting this week)

2. ABC's Brothers & Sisters (I would happily marry into the Walker clan, if only for the wine; pictured, David Annable and Emily VanCamp) (Also: Slezak is recapping later today in PopWatch, fear not)

3. ABC's Desperate Housewives (for as long as Gale Harold is on, anyway; bonus pic of him with Teri Hatcher, after the jump!)

4. The CW's Privileged (it's like an ABC Family Channel original movie, only well-written!)

5. I was gonna say CBS' Ghost Whisperer — I've got to see where they're headed with David Conrad's character — but really, it's ABC's Boston Legal. They know it's their last season, which should give them plenty of time to plot an appropriately insane, verbose, and (above all) affectionate exit for Denny Crane (William Shatner) and Alan Shore (James Spader). In the season premiere, Alan took on Big Tobacco and Denny thought his penis had Alzheimer's — very promising.

Your turn.

1. Survivor: Micronesia
2. Heroes

2. - Grey's Anatomy
Don't really have any others I watch regularly on broadcast tv. I do watch "Burn Notice" on USA.

heathcliff Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

definitely Desperate Housewife! coz i am an enormous fan of Gale Harold. He is of perfection.i'd love to pick up anything thing with Gale's presence. Sooooo glad he is back on tv :D

Jen Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I don't get attached much. So I can only think of 2 shows.
1. DH, only because of Gale, and even for him, I can't tell how long it will last cos the show really does nothing for me.
2. Lost

Inefable Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

1. Queer as Folk

Chuck

Sawyer Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

How is Lost not even on the list? And Ghost Whisperer IS? I want to strangle the ads and those are only a few seconds long. Also, Survivor is on twice, so arguably if they had combined both seasons it would have won by a landslide. Wow.

teela Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

1. ONE TREE HILL (been number one since season 1 even during horrible leyton times)
2. Chuck (how can you not watch this show!)
3. How I met your mother (laughs, romance, everything u need in a show/same for chuck btw :P)
4. Greys anatomy [even during its off days its still GREAT]
5. Heroes [the cliff hangers MAKE you come back]

special mention to private practice which after its second season premiere might take over number 5

Gail Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

1. Lost
2. ER
3. 24

If this were cable shows I'd have put Project Runway, Dr. Who, and WWE RAW.

1. Lost

TV Watcher Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

1. Bones
2. The Office
3. early seasons of House
....that's it cuz the rest are on basic cable

real_vermonter Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

1. BONES (leaps and bounds above the rest)
2. The Office
3 and 4. Daily Show and Colbert (Comedy apparently makes me "emotional")
5. House (until last season, now I am not sure....I did not like most of last season)

C.J. Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Hm. "Broadcast" lets out The Closer and Saving Grace, and "this fall" lets out 24. Caveats aside, here are my top five "emotional attachment" shows:

1. Grey's Anatomy. God help me, I don't know why. Sometimes I want to shake every last one of them. Hard. But still, I can't get enough. Maybe it's McDreamy's perfect stubble...

2. The Big Bang Theory. Never fails to make me laugh a LOT, and I find myself really pulling for Leonard.

3. Brothers & Sisters. The Walkers drive me batty at times, but they're irresistible.

4. Boston Legal. Yes, there's silliness galore, and David E. Kelley seems genetically incapable of stopping himself from going just that much too far ... but for me, it's all about Alan and Denny. Theirs is one of the great love stories of our time, and the genuine affection that James Spader and William Shatner bring to the roles gives me such a lift. I'm really going to miss them when they go.

5. Life. I'm not sure the show itself works ... but Damian Lewis is sublime.

Beth Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

1. Lost
2. How I Met Your Mother
3. Pushing Daisies
4. Ugly Betty
5. Heroes

Emily Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

1. LOST! By far the most ever.
2. Battlestar Galactica. Dorky but awesome!
3. Bones. Guilty pleasure.
4. Dexter.
5. House. Still hate the new people but love Hugh Laurie.

janie Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

WHY isn't LOST on this list? That's the only show I'm emotionally attached to and the ONLY show I will make an effort to get home and watch live instead of on Tivo.

Lore Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

hmm, can't really say I agree with that list, so here's mine.

1.Buffy
2.Terminator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles
3.Pushing Daisies
4.Doctor Who
5.Reaper

Sharon Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

1. csi
2. West Wing
3. Buffy\
4. Ghost Whisperer
5. Freakazoid

nan Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

1. Supernatural (I'm really glad to know there are so many others out there like me who love this great under-the-radar show.)
2. Battlestar Galactica (I know it's not network, but it's the only other show I'm really addicted to.)
-- big gap here --
3. House
4. Numb3rs
5. Bones

Elle Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

1-Supernatural
2-Law and Order SVU
3-Lost
Those are my top one rights now (though technically, Lost isn't a fall show.) I debated adding Heroes to the list, but at this point I have to wait and see. Supernatural is my ABSOLUTELY-CANNOT-MISS-under-any-circumstances show - can't get enough of those Winchesters!

Michelle Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

1. supernatural
2. lost
3. criminal minds
4. greys
5. Supernatural...again just because I'm seriously invested

Jose Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

1. Lost- nothing comes even close!! I think I experience actual WITHDRAWAL when this shows off the air lol.
2. Survivor- have watched all 16 seasons
3. Heroes
4. The Amazing Race
5. Big Brother

drella66 Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Its hard without the cable shows because the most of top shows I am most commited to are on bravo and f/x but as far as broadcast network shows:
1-Survivor
2-LOST
3-Brothers & Sisters
4-Grey's Anatomy
5-all Law & Orders

Laurie Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 09:18 PM EST

1. 30 Rock
2. Mad Men
3. Lost
4. How I Met Your Mother
5. The Amazing Race

AJ Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

1. Supernatural (It a fantastic show that constantly produces great episodes every week for 4 years. Dean, Sam, Bobby, John, Ruby, Ash, etc. they are all amazing characters that you want to get to know. Although, every time Dean says that he is not good enough or somehow puts himself down, it just kills me).
2. The Office (Jim & Pam. What more can i say. And Toby. He's so underrated. Moments with that characters are some of the funniest I've ever seen on television)
3. Lost. (I've invested in the show because I want to know what the end game is)
4. Entourage.
5. 24 (I freakin' love Jack Bauer)

coco Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

1. Grey's Anatomy
2. How I met your mother
3. House
4. CSI:Miami
5. Americas Next Top Model: yeah I'm a loser!!!!

Lady K Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Okay, since I have to limit to broadcast TV, I say:

1) Moonlight (still mourning its loss and anxiously awaiting its release on DVD AND I still haven't watched CBS since they made the boneheaded decision to cancel it!!!!!)
2) House (how freakin' criminal is it that Hugh Laurie STILL hasn't won an Emmy??!!!)
3) Bones
4) Supernatural
5) Fringe (it is getting better as it goes along)

CaseyM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

1. LOST
2. LAS VEGAS
3. Prison Break
4. Bones
5. Buffy/Angel

Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

1. LOST
2. LAS VEGAS
3. Prison Break
4. Lois & Clark
5. Charmed

TheQueenOfDiamonds Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

My top five would have to be:

1. CSI: Miami. The plots get crazier, but hey, what would CSI be without a man who loves his sunglasses?
2. House. Because everybody loves a deprecating doctor.
3. Bones. No words needed.
4. Brothers and Sisters. The family dramas always get to me.
5. The L Word. I'm straight and yet I don't understand why this appeals to me so much, but it's always interesting to find out what happens next. Also, Bette and Tina are just like any on-again, off-again straight couple on TV, and that makes for easy emotional attachment, right? Yeah.

abp Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Emotional attachment is the only logical explanation for why I keep hanging on to ER so fiercely after all these years. Even through all of the ridiculous on-screen calamities, recycled plot-lines, inexplicable character disappearances, etc., I've remained steadfastly loyal to the show because I'm so emotionally invested in it, and in its characters. (Which is why I sobbed for the entire final act of last week's season premiere, even though I was spoiled about the ending.) It's amazing to think about: I have been doing the exact same thing on Thursday nights at 10 p.m. for fourteen years! That's an awfully long time. Though I feel similarly attached to The Office, my "relationship" with that show is much shorter than my relationship with ER, so my devotion is not quite as deep. But, I have a feeling that after ER goes off the air this year my remaining emotional attachment will be transferred to The Office.

The Office

Danielle Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

1. 24

**Would have had Greys Anatomy and Prison Break on this list in years past but last season just wasn't the same so my connection has lessened.**

1) LOST
2) Brothers & Sisters

Mike J Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 02:52 AM EST

1. Bones (hands down, the finest chemistry on TV with the most gorgeous actors with two of the hardest names to spell, Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz).
2. Desperate Housewives (Dana Delaney provided the show a new spark, Gale Harold gives it new heat and the four leads and sharp writing give it its heart)
3. American Idol (Tears after the break, Simon's criticism, Paula's loopiness and some genuinely great performances by unknowns)
4. Eli Stone (The only show that brought me to tears every single episode--it's like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie every episode)
5. Samantha Who? (The only half hour comedy that doesn't completely annoy me--sorry Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother)

Veronica Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 02:49 AM EST

These are the shows I can't live with:

1. Lost
2. Friday Night Lights
3. Brothers and Sisters

3. Doctor Who
4. Gilmore Girls (We need more closure people!!! A movie would suffice nicely.)
5. Pushing Daisies

Danny Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

As others have said, I'm more attached to cable shows. My two broadcast ones are Desperate Housewives and The Office. Although I still watch Roseanne on DVD constantly, so I have emotional attachment to that as well. My two greatest attachments are cable shows, though: Sex and the City and WEEDS.

pgv417 Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 12:01 AM EST

also, I just scrolled through all of the comments, and Lost is above and beyond the most predominant choice amongst comment-ers. Does that mean we are just a certain group of people that think similarly, or is Lost really that far and beyond addictive?

Also, if I was commenting on shows that no longer exist:

1) Friends
2) The West Wing
3) The OC
4) Veronica Mars
5) Gilmore Girls

You say for the 2008-9 season but then say for the Fall, so I don't know if my top answer counts, but...
1. Lost
2. NCIS
3. Supernatural
4. Bones
5. House
6. (If Lost doesn't count) Chuck

Except for Lost (and possibly NCIS and Supernatural), I think I am actually way more attached to my cable shows than my Broadcast shows; however, as you said Broadcast, that's my list (and virtually all of the Broadcast shows I watch).
