HBO's 'True Blood': What did you think?

Sep 8, 2008, 02:05 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Television, The Bad Man Scares Me!

Trueblood_l As a huge fan of Six Feet Under, there was no way I was going to miss creator Alan Ball's return to TV (and specifically, HBO) with last night's premiere of True Blood. (Read Ken Tucker's official EW review of the show here; for the record, he gives it a C.) And that "God Hates Fangs" billboard in the opening credits gave me hope that the show might be able to mix a little of that patented SFU-style humor into the vampires-among-us plotline (taken from Charlaine Harris's series of novels). Alas, however, while the pilot episode did a decent job of  holding my attention -- and while I'll definitely tune in again next week to see if the show improves -- True Blood succeeded only intermittently in providing biting laughs while still going for the dramatic jugular.

(I now take a brief pause to apologize for my overzealous vampire jokes. I totally suck.)

On the plus side, Anna Paquin (pictured, left), looking like a Vargas Waitress in her tight white t-shirt, clingy black short-shorts, and magnificent ponytail, succeeded in making Sookie Stackhouse a thing of wide-eyed sass. I chuckled heartily when she batted down her Grandmother's request to ask her new vampire acquaintance to give a presentation about his Civil War experiences by explaining: "I think he might have a hard time showing up to the public library at noon on a Thursday." I also liked her bitchin' use of a tire chain to take down that unsuspecting goon who attacked her would-be paramour.

But other parts of the hour played more like a broad CBS sitcom, especially when Sookie got into a shouting match with lovestruck employer Sam and best pal Tara (a hammy Rutina Wesley), while simultaneously reading their minds. Part of the problem is the abundance of stock characters, a jarring and disappointing change from SFU's rich band of eccentrics. There's the slacker best friend who delights in refusing to take her job seriously (how Reaper!). There's the kindly grandma who serves buttery meals with a side of batty. There's the stoic, pale blood-sucker (Stephen Moyer, pictured, right) who, despite having apparently lived through the disco era, the Reagan years, and the fabulous '90s, still utters groaners like, "May I call on you sometime?" Come on!

Still, that brief footage of a vampire-sex video was genuinely chilling. And while I saw the episode's climactic (and vicious) assault coming from the minute Sookie shooed away Sam and insisted she'd wait in the darkened parking lot by herself, the end result was still deeply upsetting.

What did you all think of the True Blood premiere? Will you be back for a second helping? And should Ryan Kwanten (as Sookie's buff brother Jason) get some kind of special award for most gratuitous exposing of the male torso* in a single hour of television?

the hubby and and gang loved the episode!!! I miss Lafayette! Glad to see he's back! Daphne is definitely a shifter.. maybe a werepanther from Hotshot??? Don't mean to spoil this for anyone..sorry. Jason and Sarah are gonna end up bangin' or something cuz you know Jason can't go a few days without gettin' any... this may be his longest stretch!! lol... EG and FK you know they gotta stretch out the whole FOS scene cuz of what's going to happen but everything that ya'll said below i agree with.. i love Jessica and all the little funny moments.. this one was entertaining! and i'm soooo excited she met Barry!!! yeaaaa!!!! Nite ya'll NOLA out!!

Rose Dinger Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 08:08 PM EST

I am so GLAD that Lafayette did not die like in the book series, he is one of my favorite characters. GREAT SHOW !!!!
BLOODY GOOD !!!

EricGroupie Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 06:10 PM EST

...and I *LOVED* Jason punching the "Lukenator" in the nose. I almost fell off the couch laughing so hard.

EricGroupie Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 06:05 PM EST

...other than that, I loved last night's episode. I felt sorry for Andy, he wasn't even drunk! Oh, and I'm tired of seeing Ms. Jeannette's body. Shouldn't it be buried already, or something?

EricGroupie Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 06:03 PM EST

FK-here's my thoughts:
1. I'm SO done w/ the orgy scenes.
2. I'm SO done w/ Marianne
3. I think that Daphne will turn out to be a shifter.
4. I really didn't care for the Eggs/Tara sex scene, it was too dark. I think they needed some lights or something.
5. Sookie's outfit in the airport was HORRIBLE. Even my husband said so.
6. Jessica picked up the glamour really quickly, maybe too quickly.
7. At least now we know that Marianne is the creature in the woods.
8. I agree, the song that was playing when Jason was having his daydream fit perfectly.
9. Sarah Newlin creeps me out, not too sure about her. Stepford Wife?
10. Someone else mentioned that if you pause the scene where Sookie is watching tv, the middle movie in the porn collection had Rev. Newlin on the front. Idk.
11. Layfette air humping *EVERY*thing was hysterical.
12. I'm upset that they didn't give Jessica and Hoyt airtime last nite.
13. I wish the FOtS would drive their bus off a cliff. I'm DONE with them too.

FrannieKate Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 04:38 PM EST

OK, where do I start?
How funny was it when Jason started to fantasize about Sarah Newlin? The song playing (Mississippi hot sauce) was perfect for that moment! Jason was cracking me up! And then Lafayette dancing after Eric gave him blood...OMG, I thought I was gonna wet myself! And when Jessica couldn't open her "flight" coffin, too funny! I have got to say, this was one of the most entertaining eps of this season. Would have liked to find out a little more about Daisy... not sure whether to like her or not. She is giving weird vibes.
And last but not least... Eric looked fine as ever. I would eat that man up! I liked that he showed a softer side this ep. I hope the show sticks with it. I want all the TB fans to see what all us BOOK fans love about him. PEACE.LOVE.TRUEBLOOD
what were your thought on last nights ep?

EricGroupie Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 01:49 PM EST

Fk--I liked Quinn at the beginning, but he just didn't open up as much to Sookie as I would've liked.

Nach--you're sarcasm was felt loud and clear! the sooner we see Nekkid Eric, the BETTER, as far as I'm concerned! I wonder if what they say is true...Big feet, long fangs????

FrannieKate Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 11:11 AM EST

True. Guess I can only hope that the show decides to have Eric show a little skin earlier than season 4!:)
A girl can dream...
BTW... is anyone a fan of Quinn from the books? I have to say that I am not. Though, I don't totally know why.

Well if HBO is doing the seasons in book order... Book 4 is Dead to the World and in the beginning Eric is running down the street Naked!! lol... i was trying to be funny.. but i guess my sarcasm didn't leak through the lines..lol shoot i hope he gets necked sooner than that!! What's with the date and time stamp in the beginning of your post?

FrannieKate Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 06:32 PM EST

At 04:05:06 on 07/08/09. It will never happen again in our lifetime...
Back to Trueblood:
NOLA, where did you see that season 4 will be Eric's "coming out"? I hate to think that we have to wait that long. I do crave me some Eric ;}
Peace.Love.TrueBlood

NOLA Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 05:23 PM EST

Nacho your are so damn funny!! Does Bill make you squirm in your chair?? lol... he does make a funny face.. YES, Eric needs to start getting naked!! Looks like season 4 is when we see Eric running around naked though.. booooo. :o( hope everyone had a happy 4th of July.. NOLA outtie.. oh i like that Peace.Love.TrueBlood. that's a good one!!

nacho mama Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 04:30 PM EST

7 8 9 today's date!

nacho mama Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 04:29 PM EST

Well, EG, I guess you shouldn't watch me watching TB on Sunday's becuase I have that look on my face the whole dang time! And the 7th marked my 5th mo of working out and I've only lost 6 freaking lbs! On happy note, I can now get through a whole elip program.

EricGroupie Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 10:00 PM EST

FK--i know, right?!? Bill's expression is creepy...it looks like he's extremely turned on (which i know is part of the blood sharing) but eww. I thought I was the only one who noticed...

FrannieKate Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 09:24 PM EST

Okay, so I'm watching the first three episodes back to back (peeved that I have to wait another week for a new one) and noticed something. Have you ever paid attention to Bills faces when he gives Sookie blood. I can't help but cringe... He does this strange thing with is mouth/lips. Totally unattractive!
I have to admit, maybe I'm being a little picky because I want Eric to be on the giving end and NOT BILL?!?!?!?!?! If you have the last episode recorded, go back and watch it, you'll see.
PEACE. LOVE. TRUEBLOOD.

MLP Thu, Jul 2, 2009 at 01:09 PM EST

I've read all the Charlaine Harris books, so I really really like Eric. Desperately want to see him hook up with Sookie. Am not a big fan of the Fellowship of the Son/Sun story line, but it is essential to the story. I love, Eric, Sookie, Bill, Tara, Sam and Lafayette(hope he stays human), but I think Eric thinks Lafayette owes a debt to the vamps for dealing
"V".

EricGroupie Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 09:36 PM EST

kee-DAW was gorgeous last episode! (Makes me feel good about being a redhead!)

Keelee Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 03:33 PM EST

FrannnieKate Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 11:42 AM EST

Okay... I am starting to think that reading all the books was a bad idea. Before the books I use to enjoy every episode of True Blood. Now I find myself saying BLAH BLAH BLAH (when Sookie and Bill were talking in the car close to the end). We need more Eric time and LESS TARA Time. She is not a favorite of mine. Now we have to wait 2 weeks to see what happens next. (*#&%%@*$#($%&%^Q%@##%$)
Ok, I feel a little better now.
:)

nacho mama Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 10:31 AM EST

On a side note, I bought my first ever Michael Jackson CD last week. Since he was always on the radio when I was in high school, there was no need to but an album. Then, when all the STUFF was going on, I didn't want to buy any of his music. Now, as we get the retrospectives, the sadness of his life, as a whole, is apparent. I'm trying to celebrate all that he brought to us as an artist as opposed to the self-damaging eccentricities he had.

nacho mama Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 10:18 AM EST

Good one last night! I was at a party like that last week, myself, haha. Oh, Lafayette looked exhausted. I know everyone is looking forward to more Sookie and Eric but I've still got the hots for Bill. Ryan whose last name I can never remember how to spell is awesome as Jason. Normally, I wouldn't like that kind of character but he makes him tolerable. Hey, where is our Carlos? Bon Temps to Carlos?

EricGroupie Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 07:08 AM EST

Hey gang, watched the last epi twice. And am *SAD*that it won't be on next week. Two weeks to wait is 3 weeks too much! Loved Jessica and Hoyt (What if I'm not a good girl?) I'm SO over the FOtS, Eric was fantastic as always. I will serve him my pudding ANYTIME! Watching Lafayette made me sad. Bill looked as ever suave and cool. Dr. Ludwig was a hoot, although I really wanted them to pass her around like they did in the book. The orgy was lame, al it was was a bunch of girls running around topless, when you KNOW that AB can come up with some *great* sex scenes. Also, what's up with Daphne? Thinking she may be a shifter, but I'm not sure.

shadowfire Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 06:13 AM EST

I am very disappointed that layfayette is not a vamp, but I am thinking that that guys called 'eggs' is the minotaur. I think whats her name sent him after sookie so she woud not take tara away from the house. Eric is stll hot , even with that haircut-- yummie viking vamp! Pearls in hand, peace out

SICK SICK SICK :)

FrannieKate Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 09:45 AM EST

NOLA Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 09:54 PM EST

Randy Quaid would be a good Bubba!!! i'll chat more tomorrow... too tired.. clutching pearls. NOLA out.. nite ya'll

EricGroupie Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 08:50 PM EST

FK--how about a chunkier Kurt Russell? (like 10k miles to graceland but in a XXL)

FrannieKate Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 03:08 PM EST

GOOD QUESTION. He would be a hoot to have on the show

Q: Who would you have play Bubba if you could choose?

Ann Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 01:43 PM EST

As a long-time fan of the books,I have just one question: WHERE'S BUBBA?????

EricGroupie Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 07:01 AM EST

Mas---*Siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh* I don't see the attack on Christian conservatism. I DO see the attack on the crazies that take religion to the extreme. Just sayin....

Anywho, I'm clutching my pearls with BOTH hands awaiting the next episode...num num!

Linda Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 03:23 AM EST

I want more of the actual story line. HBO you have gotten a little too carried away. I enjoy the series but enjoy the books more.

Damn Sookie! I am a point in book 8 were I would love to reach through the book and smack her upside her head! WAKE UP YOU CRAZY Telepath and give the hot viking a break!! Geeeeeez. OK, i said my piece. Take care ladies...

FrannieKate Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 07:41 AM EST

Thanks Nola, I'm glade to hear about book 9! I finished 6 last night and was a bit...well let's just say, unsatisfied. I'm picking up book 7 today. Can't wait! I will def keep in touch! Thanks again. 

shadowfire Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 05:53 AM EST

yeah I am worried he will turn the little girl , just like in anne rice's interview with a vampire. She will be an abomination. Sookie will never be able to live with herself and Jessica will hate her eternally for causing the deaths of her entire family--- wow this should get pretty interesting.
I am guessing Bill is going to give Eric his blessing and let him take Sookie to Dallas now -- Bill was pretty angry.

mas Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 10:03 PM EST

I liked it ( second episode), but I'm so disappointed in HBO's constant attacks on Christian Conservatism. I don't know why this seems to be obligatory with everything they churn out.

NOLA Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 08:20 PM EST

ok.. so Sookie should have seen that coming..she must be blinded by love.. yea yea. I loved the scene where the sales lady is picking up on Bill while he's shopping for Jessica.. then Eric walks in and she's thinking they're gay. too funny!!! i'm sure Bill is gonna have to get ride of evidence because they (vampires) are fighting for their rights to be considered citizens but yet Bill just admitted to "making" Jessica but yet they're supposed to be civilized vamps. Did i say that right? So now Bill has to either get rid of them or reason with them not to say anything (yea right i don't see that happening)... what do ya'll think?

NOLA Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 08:14 PM EST

Fran honey... welcome to our little page we call "home"... there are a few of us who have read all of the books.. and some who choose not to. I LOVE BOOK 4. and you will LOVE BOOK 9 if you LOVED book 4... if you know what i mean. feel free to vent on here.. we are all here for support right gang?? and we all loooove to clutch our pearls waiting for the next show.. heeheee.. yes we've all complained in the past that HBO has gone off the beaten path just a wee bit but it's for pure entertainment value.. trust me. We (the people who have read the books) expect to see every detail that Charlaine Harris has written. When words are put to picture, there is no need for description..now as for my friend Lafayette..well no one expected him to be such a big hit..so our pearl clutching lover seems to have 9 lives on this show..yeaaaa!! as everyone on here knows.you can email me at nolachic521@gmail.com if you want to chat more or get confused on something i can help. Miss Malee was my help!

FrannieKate Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 04:25 PM EST

Help... I'm a woman obsessed! I loved season one and decided after seeing episode 1 of season 2, I had to read the books. I have read books 1-5 in the past 4 days and I'm half through book 6. All I do is read! Though my 6th grade English teacher might be thrilled to hear this, my hubby is NOT! As for the show... need I say anything??? WOW! My only issue is, having read the books, I can't help but be a wee bit disappointed when I watch the show. Don't get me wrong, I am glued to my TV every Sunday night from 8-9...watching with baited breath. It's just for anyone who has read the books, especially book 4, you know greatness is coming...and when there is no sign of what SHOULD be to come, I worry that the writers of the show aren't going to keep with the book in that way! I WILL BE REALLY DISAPPOINTED IF THEY DON'T!

If anyone wants to talk about the books, I'm your girl! No one I know has read them and keeping all the drama to myself is torture!

Sorry for being so vague, I don't

NACHO MAMA Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 01:53 PM EST

My goodness! Have you seen all the EW articles for our little show? I think it's finally caught on to the masses. yeah, I love Bill & sookie, but I believe the real bread n butter of the show are the supporting characters. It just gets my right in my nether regions.

shadowfire Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 09:23 AM EST

Oh Nola! Jessica was really something with her dad huh? and How did Sookie NOT see that coming? Eric asking Layfayette about his hair -- rofl. As for layfayette -- dude he stole the show hands down last night -- i loved his lines about the order of his priorities -- lol. He will make an awesome Vampire, I hope they don't kill him-- did not read the books so shhh don't tell me. I can't wait to see how Bill 'Handles' the situation at Jessica's house. He did NOT glamour a small child?!? wow!

Vee Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 11:45 PM EST

I haven't read the books. Will I be disappointed with the show if I read them?

Vee Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 11:40 PM EST

My God!! The second season is increduable, sorry for the spelling. The character develop in the first season, though at times was mundane, truley helped creating such a fabulous, awesome, glamoring, seductive start. I am hooked.

Megsbb3 Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 10:54 PM EST

I love this series, but I do have to admit tonight was upsetting to me. I am bored, and not completely understanding the pop concert that went on. Its HBO, not Disney.

NOLA Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 10:35 PM EST

hey Shadow! we did not forget about you! yes they are going a little off the storyline of the book but they are laying the ground work for the Dallas trip... remember.. books are more detailed because we have to imagine the picture we see.. HBO is just playing it out for us.. in HBO true style... KINKY!! lol... they gotta put a little seasoning in their gumbo dawlin' what'cha thinkin'? lol... My Lafayette is gonna be a nasty little vampire.. i'm so excited. Don't get me wrong, i am a HUGE fan of the books.. but i love Lafayette's character in the show... oh i wish Carlos were here to back me up on this... till next Sunday.. i'll be clutching my pearls to see what happens to Lafayette. NOLA out...

thiele Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 10:08 PM EST

I thought the 2nd episode was better than the first of season 2, but it feels like we are losing the story of Sookie, her telepathy, and her love stories. The writers are taking this story on wild tangents that in my opinion are not nearly as compelling as the books. I was so looking forward to this season; it is so disappointing.

nacho mama Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 04:31 PM EST

You know on Friday afternoons, how hard it is to stay focused on work? I'm just sitting here, vegging out, when I realized it almost Sunday! Ep 2 around the corner. And I have to say, Sam sure got a lot cuter over the summer. Or maybe my hubby is just less appealing?

Sky--*num yummy*!!!!! Hot Damn!

Blood---Eric even cuts his hair this season, although I admit that it looks better short

Skyyeblue35 Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 09:42 PM EST

I have to agree, I'm a bit disappointed too. This wasn't loosely based on any of the book(s), it wasn't based from it at all. I truely hop, for those that enjoy the novels and are expecting it to follow a tad more closely, that the show at least gives us SOMETHING of the basic story line that we're familiar with. I'm all for creative license, but, I need some tried and true as well. Having said that, I look forward to seeing more of Alex/Eric this season...blue lycra pants FTW! :)

bloodlies Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 09:30 PM EST

more than disappointed! I understand creative license but come on! Change what you will but lets stay with vampire basics....why on earth would Eric highlight his hair? In every vampire novel since vampire novels began when could a vampire ever change his or her appearance?

EricGroupie Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 09:22 PM EST

.....and I got the BluRays of Season One. They're great. If you turn on "enhanced viewing" it tells you about everyone, has a map where everything is happening, and Lafayette comes in at different parts to give opinions. Hilarious!

EricGroupie Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 09:20 PM EST

Ok, so I'm disappointed with the first episode, however I'm happy that Laf's back. *yay*...the last 5 min were the best 4 me. (Bill and Sookie---the bed almost caught on fire they were so HOT!)...hmmm...this is SO left field from the books....

EricGroupie Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 09:15 PM EST

OMG!!! I'm sorta disappointed about the first episode! But *YAY* Lafayette! (Thought he was a goner based on the books)....Cracked up super-hard when Eric came down with his foils in....the last 5 minutes were the best for me...Go Sookie, it's ur birthday!

I have just heard that Greg Collins (the 'Where's Waldo' of actors- he's been in everything!) will be playing Gabe.AAAH So glad the show is bringing some actors with depth and grit! Love it.

Enjoying the reruns but I need some fresh stuff. Still working, still weigh the same. (fume) If I drank pop or eat cheesecake for breakfast, I could quit but nope, oatmeal and lots of water.

I haven't read the books.... can anybody help by naming the Bon Temps High School Football Team Mascot?
It's some kind of bird...
(noted on the T-Shirt in the TV series).
Thanks!

Well, I haven't really lost any weight yet but I'm still going. I certainly feel better knowing I'm finally up off my behind (no matter its' size) that I'll keep going. Yeah, I'm hurting right now, too. I need me some serious V!

May is what I've heard as far as TB coming back...I just got the BluRay of Twilight...still love the movie! I've had so much of a jones for vampires that I've re-read all of Twilight's series and all of my Sookie books, plus about 5 other various vamp books....I need some TB!!! I'm like an addict looking for a fix....hmmm...maybe I can get my hubby to play make-believe with me...not a bad idea!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! Not to slight anyone who isn't but I'm sure glad I'm Irish.

Carlos lover i've missed you!!!
you have been missed by everyone!!
EG stick with WW. i lost 18lbs in 3weeks.. keep it up!!

Carlos Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 11:59 AM EST

NOLA and Nacho mama, I have been clutching my pearls, because this blog haven't been letting me post on here. I go to the gym almost everyday to keep this body tight and slim like my Jason. lol Poor Lafayette, I will truly miss him clutching his pearls. Scifi channel has brought back "Moonlight" with Mick aka Alex O'Loughlin. True Blood should cast Alex O'Loughlin on the show. This guy would give dimwitted Jason a run for his money with his hot looks.

nacho mama Fri, Feb 13, 2009 at 05:32 PM EST

Carlos! You've been missed!!! I don't know who posted it, is that you, EG? Or NOLA? (names people!) but congrats on losing weight. I resumed working out this week and will go again this weekend marking my 5th & 6th trips to the gym. My backside is sore so I must be doing something right. Oh, how nice of people to post their ads here so we can keep this board going! My son is doing better. He's now at an alternative high school and on meds, cyetahlopram (sp?). Spring training (baseball) starts soon!
I'm-a blabbing so I must be-a goin!

Carlos Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 11:29 PM EST

Hey everyone, this site hasn't been letting me post. I miss Jason in his tighty whites.
