What did you think of MTV's Video Music Awards?

Sep 7, 2008, 11:43 PM | by Pop Watch

Categories: Video Music Awards 2008

  • Pink_vmamtv_l Well, the show is over, and in our opinion there were definitely some ups (Pink, pictured, and Lil Wayne, holla!), downs (what was up with cutting several of the performances short??), and sidewayses (Russell Brand -- oddball or charmer?). PopWatchers, what did you think? (Visit our live blog if you missed it.) Don't keep it bottled up -- sing out in the comments section below!

to be honest with you i think katy perry was amazing and should of won something . katykat.

Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

It was awesome. Tokio Hotel winning their first award was the best part of the show for me. I was soo excited when i saw them say TOKIO HOTEL. and i was surpried upon how many awards Britney Spears won that night.

brody Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Hehe! Luckily Pink was wearing "Nightfever" Nippies by Bristols 6 when she had her wardrobe malfunction on stage. This pretty pewter-colored duo comes with 1 pair sparkly sequins and 1 pair luxe satin...so rock glam. Check out that style and more at www.bristols6.com!

Jenevieve Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 01:10 AM EST

Kanye west is a my favorite raper in the world and the Jonas brothers were hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooootttttttttttttttttttttttt

AB Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

i agree wit pink bein good, but rihanna com on she sounded like ridiculous

Iosef Mackevelli Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:04 AM EST

The only things good about the VMA's were Rihanna, and Pink. Mtv sucks now, it used to be better back in the day, now it's as worthless as most of the rest of modern news media. While i'm very pro Obama, watching mtv destroy our youth just makes me sick.

shameonmtvforchoosinganidiothostwhowashorribleandnotfunny Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:41 AM EST

There is really nothing to say other than MTV, in my opinion, has lost credibility, has also proven to 'USE' people(Britney)that will help MTV reap beneifits for their sole purpose of obtaining ratings and has most notable mentions as hiring someone who bashes The United States President, (reminder the President puts in place policies that protect all Americans, regardless of political belief). MTV gives no apology for it... confirming the fact they have no regard for the American Way of Wife... Frankly.... any cable network can give us our stars... and I prefer one that is on our side... not some network that would allow rhetoric for someone who has such disrespect for the American public to say that American's have no intelligence as we elected a 'Retard'. Nice word Russell and thanks for approving Russell's message MTV before he stated it on live television infront of all Americans.

Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:39 AM EST

Russell Brand was hilarious. He was charming, he took risks and he made my friends and I laugh out loud. Thats what comedians do. He's not a politician, so everyone freaking out about his remarks about the president and the current candidates can settle down...Bush has said far worse/ dumber things.

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

Where to begin. I realy could not wait to see Britney but watching her walk to get to the stage was just stupid. Granted she looked great. But for me when Russell Brand slamed the Governor's daugher and her boyfriend was just too much for me. I know this.... because I walked in those shoes and it sickens me to see someone hurt another human but to do this in front of the world is even worse. I'm sure many Americans have friends that have been in the same situation and would not apperciate your friend being embarrased in front of the world. Mtv hould step up and make apologies for the guys actions for everything. I thought this show was suppose to be about music awards and not a political rally. Lastly, the show was boring and I cannot figure out what happened to the days when you had great bands, great songs..you think about it the 70's and 80's music must have been pretty good because everyone still wants to do remakes of those songs.

Jigglypuff Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

David: Just so you know, Dubyah (or, as I like to more accurately refer to him, Beelzebub) wasn't actually voted in the first time. Al Gore was. Some evil political manipulation along with hanging chads in Florida are to blame for his getting into office at all.

Sean Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

I had posted a couple of concerns/comments about the so-called "25th Anniversary VMAs". That is, until I actually saw the show I was expecting MTV to put on 2 days later on CBS. It was odd though, because they called it Fashion Rocks 5. It had all the flash, fun and surprising performances I wait for Sunday night. What I don't understand is that CBS and MTV are both owned by the same company and both shows took place in New York last weekend. Why they could not have used the same advantages is beyond me. All I can suggest is that MTV employ Don Mischer (producer of FR5) as producer of the VMAs. It was great to see someone still knows how to put on an interesting and fun music program.

David Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

The USA is currently the most powerful country in the world. Its natural that the rest of the world cares who is in charge... IT EFFECTS THEM. Most right minded people simply cannot understand how GWB ended up as the defacto leader of the freeworld. We can't vote but we sure as hell have a right to make our feelings known.

Heh? Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

Excuse me, WHAT??????

Also from fueleconomy.gov:
Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are trapping more of the sun's energy in the Earth's atmosphere, causing global climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) from burning fossil fuels is the most important human-made GHG. Highway vehicles account for 26% of our CO2 emissions (1.7 billion tons each year). 95% of the GHG emitted from highway vehicles is CO2. Each gallon of gasoline you burn creates 20 pounds of CO2. The average vehicle emits around 6 to 9 tons of CO2 each year.

Jigglypuff Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Congratulations, open. You've now come up with a justification for continuing to drive your Lincoln Navigator. Bully for you. fueleconomy.gov says "Burning fossil fuels such as gasoline or diesel contributes to a number of environmental problems, such as air pollution (smog) and global climate change. In addition, spills from refining and transporting oil and petroleum products damage ecosystems and pollute groundwater and streams." See, even the government you're supporting doesn't agree with you.

While warming does happen naturally, humans are certainly augmenting it at the moment, even if they are not the root cause

open Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

to jigglypuff - "In my opinion, the grain of salt that it is, global warming is a somewhat natural occurrence. On the same hand, our constant pollution can't help much. Again in my opinion, some people blame global climate change totally on pollution so that it's our fault. Humans, or rather society, don't like the fact that there are things they can't control." "A thousand years ago, the planet went through a period of global warming, called the Medieval Warm Period. Temperatures were higher than anything observed during the current warm period. There were no SUVs or coal-burning electricity plants to blame it on. Two thousand years ago, the planet went through another period of global warming, called the Roman Warm Period. Temperatures were higher than anything observed during the current warm period. There were no SUVs or coal-burning electricity plants to blame it on. Three thousand years ago, the planet went through another period of global warming, called the Minoan Warm Period.

Jigglypuff Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Mozzer, you're no fun. Stop being the Blog Policing God and come watch some telly with me. And we'll set a trap for said rodent in said freaky boy's hair.

Mozzer Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Sorry Jigglypuff, cant make it I'm afraid, busy policing blogs the world over, in my heavenly way. Did you know that Russell Brand once had a mouse living in his hair? Now that is true, no word of a lie.

Jigglypuff Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

mozzer, of COURSE the first round is on me! How about a round of Boddingtons after that? And offshore drilling is most definitely Brand's fault. It is also Jordin Sparks' fault. Now let's go watch some Graham Norton and Wallace & Gromit, what say you?

hellcat1983 Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Russell Brand ruined the show. He is not on top of the current issues and knows just enough to make himself look like an idiot. Bush lover or hater, there is a certain etiquette in which each person bestows to have respect for a authority figure and he crossed the line. Russell is easily forgettable, he is NOT funny he is just a symbol of how off track our country has become and how the meek and followers alike our on the way to rule the world.

Have respect for an authority figure who caused a war for no reason? I'm sorry but what planet are you living on? You may be American but over here not everybody believes what they are spoon fed by so-called respected authority figures, & in this case a retarded cowboy which is precisely what the man is!

Brit Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

"A certain etiquette", whats that all about. He wasn't playing golf, he was doing what comedians do. What was he supposed to do, say, awfully sorry old chap but I think you're a bit of a cowboy. Come on for gods sake, I'm sure Bush is big enough and strong enough to brush it off.

And whats with all the capitals, does it make your point the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I think Russell WAS funny, must be true, I put it in capitals.

Whoaness Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

Fashion Rocks 5 totally kicked the VMA's A**. Now we know why the VMA's were not in Radio City...Fashion Rocks took over the venue. As Dennis Leary said FR5 is like the VMA's but with real music! FR5 was great: highlights Rihanna doing "Vogue", JT doing that Marvin Gaye Song, Beyonce doing "At last" Kid Rock w/ Lynyrd Skynard doing "Sweet Home Alabama", BEP doing "Miss You" and the collabo between One Republic,Chris Cornell, and PCD with Timbaland.

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

Mozzer Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

Rose and Crown it is Jigglypuff, Guinness doesn't aree with me, but a nice Magners would work wonders. You getting the first round in?? Now where were we...offshore drilling, I think its that weirdo Russell Brands fault dont you.

Jigglypuff Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

Mozzer, I actually prefer bangers n' mash with a nice pint o' Guinness at the Rose & Crown, thank you very much. Meet you there for a nice political discussion about offshore drilling?

Mozzer Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

Jigglypuff, How dare you talk to a God in that way. I returned to this after a good nights sleep to find my last post 3 miles down the page, after a very brief skim read, I summarised below. You must agree, the way people have been sidetracked on this whole issue is very amusing...and the moment I read something about offshore drilling I just cracked up with laughter. The whole thing is just becoming barmy. Although I must admit in the run up to the next General Election here in Britian, I do intend to consult Russell on his political opinion, as Comedians do tend to be the basis for political affiliation in the UK. Brand for Priminister I say. Tea and scones anyone??

hellcat1983 Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:40 AM EST

It seems like you Americans are terrified of the truth, and furthermore that foreigners like Brand can actually recognise it!

Jigglypuff Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:40 AM EST

Oooo, Mozzer, I feel just so ripped up about myself for engaging in the conversation since you've decided to be the Blog Police and tell me how lame I am. For you are the Internet God and get to sit in judgment on all of us feeble minded posters. Yet you took the time to read all our posts. Who needs to get a life now???

Mozzer Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:19 AM EST

I love you too Tash, however I've got one of those ring things which forbids sexual relations until we're married, sorry.

Tash Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:50 AM EST

I love you Mozzer!

Rob Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:17 AM EST

The show used to have bands (U2, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers) and now, pure crap. The show is a shell of it's former self. Everyone now is too busy "trying" to be cool or tough.

Mozzer Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:54 AM EST

This is brilliant, Russell Brand calls Bush a "retarded cowboy" and tellsa few jokes and americans start talking about republicans this democratics that. Russell has inspired americans to remind british people of the help you gave us during world war 2, as if taking the p**s out of americans is forbidden forever, such is the price of your assistance. As well, I'm sure I just read a comment about "offshore drilling"...WTF.

I made a point of watching the show last night, and couldn't believe people were actually offended. I was actually a bit disappointed by how much Brand held back, trust me, you haven't seen anything yet. Some of you seriously need to get a grip and lighten up, you'll give yourselves a heart attack if you worry about what some "lymey comedian" has said so much. There's even anti brand groups on facebook, how funny is that!! I can imagine the headline, "facebook ruined my life, by Russell Brand", Oh you lot make me laugh.

Jigglypuff Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

open, you have to be one of the most misguided, misinformed bloggers in history. Global warming is a "natural occurrence"??? Guess you're the only one on the face of the planet who hasn't seen An Inconvenient Truth. Come out from under your rock and join the human race.

Jigglypuff Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:29 PM EST

No, Pat, Congress only became a Democratic majority within the past year, you know, when people finally got fed up with all the abominable crap the Republicans were pulling for seven years. Obama's a step in the socialist direction? Exactly how did you come to that conclusion? McCain's sure as hell ain't a step in the right direction. His choice of VP is a glaring example of that.

Dominic Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Russell Brand is god!!

Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

to open is an ass pube: you have a lot of anger. you should calm down. this forum is made for angry people. i dont even know why i'm here. democrat or republican, everyone is narrow minded and stubborn. global warming is not caused by human habits...it is sped up by human habits

open Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

global warming is a natural occurance. its the cycle of the earth. its not caused by human habits.

Pat Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

Wow, for the last 7 years we've had a republican congress and president? im pretty sure the democratic congress came in in 2006 making it 6 years... I but blame on bush without a doubt. his spending during the war was waaay too liberal for the tax cuts along with the war. we need a fiscal conservative to step into office. Im not sure if Mccain is that guy but Obama would be a step in a socialist direction. Without a doubt that is the direction the democrats are moving in.

Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

I think mtv pretty much sucks anymore all they show is crap. when mtv first came out it was awesome now its pretty much a waste of time!!

RussellBrandIsAMoron! Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

Apparently the definition of “joke” to some people is different than what it really is. I don’t think a “joke” is defined as slamming someone on their faith or beliefs.
And as far as Jordin Sparks comment, she said what she said out of anger. I think she had a right to defend her beliefs. (she was provoked)
Idiots, she didn't mean everyone that has had sex before marriage is a slut.
Those of you taking offense to the 'slut' remark, you probably are one.

Jigglypuff Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

open, I just don't understand how you can't blame the Republicans for what's happening. They're the ones who made all the decisions that have lead us to this economic disaster. I'm curious as to how you're deciding whom to vote for if you think no one is to blame for the woes of this country.

I am the mystery smut blogger Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

if im so boring than why must you go as far as engaging me?! YOU are the reason we havent left the office for happy hour yet! its people like you that keep US entertained, so continue responding because we love getting a rise out of anyone that is willing to go out of their way to tell us that we are not worth their time. come on now, got anything else? pleasssse? if not then have a nice time wiping your vaj before dinner!

open Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

jigglypuff - you are right, i am throwing my hands in the air on the save the planet issue. i guess sometimes i do that, but always in the back of my mind i believe in saving nature. i just think its going to be VERY difficult for other countries and other people to help and i am lazy, but i guess its good there are people out there to help keep me motivated to recycle and to buy a smaller more efficient car, i do my part, i just think that global warming is a natural occurance, but i hope the human race is smart enough in this era to stop it...there are just so many things in history that are unexplainable, how do you think that we are going to be able to stop nature from destroying itself (which is what global warming is) . i am not making sense to you. go ahead and say your hurtful things now (btw you dont sound like a pokemon fan)

Kirk Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Who the heck what that putz hosting the VMA awards. Not only does he need to fire his hair stylist, he would do well not to come off as a gay version of the Monkey's Davy Jones. Rather than spend any oxygen on criticizing our President, he should turn his attention to fighting for better dental habits back at home.

How did I twist your words by saying you don't think we can save the planet? That's what you said! You're throwing your hands in the air and saying we can't solve this problem, so why should you support a political candidate who says we can.

Show Blows: Russell Brand, but, more like Russell BLAND. This guy strayed so far from funny with his incoherent banter and gimmicky lines. Please stay across the pond.

Show-Ups: Lil' Wayne and Kanye West. Loved Kanye's Beijing Olympic's inspired performance. It complemented that awesome track nicely. I suppose everyone has a love/hate relationship with MTV. And Lil' Wayne never disappoints.

open, quite honestly, I have no clue what you're saying because you make absolutely no sense. You're saying we can't do anything to save the planet because you'll never buy a hybrid. You're saying the Republicans have nothing to do with the economy being in the toilet, but they're the ones who sent us to war and created a bad banking/mortgage system and sent all our jobs overseas and gave the oil companies all the power. You have nothing bad to say about the Democrats, yet you still won't vote for them. You. Make. No. Sense.

Thank you to 'stanky whiners' for your message, i agree. you all sound like a bunch of pansy a$$ whiners. they put him on there because no one else was willing to host the show, and he prob found it to be a golden opportunity to reach a HUGE audience for the purpose of saying the things he did... not for our entertainment, but for the people in the UK!!! dont you people get it? there are opinions outside of our country, about our country!!! and we are supposed to have freedom of speech right? we should welcome outsider's opinions, because no offense to the people of the USA, but we dont always have it right and frankly with our influence on the rest of the world it is in our best interest to listen more to others thoughts and opinions. aside from that, brand was brilliant for being so brash. it shows that the people in the USA are still to uptight and its amusing to the rest of the world. go wipe your vaj america!!!

and jigglypuff - it's not the human specie's choice if the planet dies..do you think we can stop the cycle of the planet? there are too many of us, and too many of us whom are lazy and not motivated enough to get educated even if we could work as a human race to stop it. you are a prime example of an argumentative, stubborn, "liberal"

Russell Brand did a fantastic job of hosting the VMAs. He did just job and did it in his classic nature: loud, rude and crude. MTV knew damn well fine how controversial he is and that he would be risking as a host but he pulled it off brilliantly.

And if people are really so offended by his comments then they really need to get a life and a sense of humour. Especially Jordin Sparks, turning a joke that was a bit risky into a serious matter. Thumbs up to Russell for having the guts to do this, I was getting fed up of the squeaky clean presenters that America usually has.

you are putting words in my mouth jigglypuff. don't tell me what i "propose". the economy has gotten worse in the past year anyways (the worst it has been since the 1930s).. so what have the democrats done in congress since they've been there? i love nature, i dont want the world to be sabotaged by today's society, if i could choose to be live in solitude in the middle of yosemite national park, i would. dont' tell me that what you think i'm saying.

stanky as whiners!!! Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

heres a message to anyone who was upset by Russell Brand's political commentary... go wipe your vaj.

MTV award show is so NOT cool anymore. Boring. And Brit for "best video"?? Please. LOL...Russell Brand was hilarious, but a stupid choice for an American audience. Then again, having anyone call Bush a retard was worth it!!

britney was made in a MTV test tube Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Britney is not back biotch... she never left! What I mean by that is the fact taht we have to see pics of her everyday on the tabloids... her music is still aired and remixed at clubs and on the radio... she never left. Just because the scripted and now cursed VMA's gave her 3 awards doesnt mean that shes back, all it means is that they crafted the whole award show to make it seem so to the people that watch and believe that there is no order to the way MTV crafts their marketing. Now they will prob try to push more britney on us and im not buying it. I hope MTV burns in hell!

For the last 7 plus years, this country has had a Republican President and Republican Congress. The Democrats have only taken over Congress in the last year. There have NOT been checks and balances during the Republicans' reign of Congress, they've been running rampant. Exactly whose fault is it then? And you're speaking against "going green" because "there's nothing we can do"? So you propose we let the planet die, then? Awesome.

Kim Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

I agree w/Open... checks and balance.

open Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

jigglypuff - republicans have not been in control. there is such thing called CHECKS AND BALANCES.

i'm not democratic. i don't think this way because of propoganda, if anything i should think the other way because of propaganda. i agree with saving the planet, but what can we really do. did you know that 80% of drivers would have to stop driving in order to help global warming? (which is a natural thing anyway, it might be being sped up a little bit, but not enough to make a difference...) also, there is a car coming out which runs on compressed air, i will never buy a hybrid, or an electric car. i'm not opposing going "green" i just think that is a fad and people are stupid. i am an environmentalist, i am a republican, i am american. i do think for myself, so stop attacking me like a mad little girl

Jigglypuff Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

open, you know why we can blame the Republican party for the woes of this country? Uh... BECAUSE THEY'RE THE ONES WHO'VE BEEN IN CONTROL FOR THE LAST 8 FRIGGIN' YEARS! I'm shaking my head in pity at you right now.
