'Swingtown' recap: Labor pains

Swingtown_l Dear Trudy Janet,
Last night was the season finale of
Swingtown, with everyone's fate left up in the air, and CBS hasn't said whether or not the show will continue. How am I supposed to cope?
-- Mopey in Manhattan

Dear Mopey,
You could start a
Jericho-style write-in campaign. Then again, what would you send into CBS HQ instead of peanuts? Cans of Tab? Pet rocks? Quaaludes? When I want to smooth things over with someone, I usually bring over a bowl of Rosy Perfection Salad, but that seems impractical in this instance. In any case, taking action will feel better than being a doormat. It's not 1954 anymore, you know. Good luck.

Kudos to Janet, by the way, for landing the advice column gig despite every effort to turn it down. (Thanks in no small part to the insistent Henry. Speaking of Henry, those of you who guessed he was gay, good call. Janet seemed surprisingly supportive and unflustered when she found out.) Janet's first impulse was to play the dutiful wife and support her husband's decision to move the family to Cincinnati, where his new job awaited. But after a little feminist pep talk from Trina, she did a 180 and decided that, if Roger were really going to take a job 400 miles away, she might not go with him. Wha?!?!?! Roger didn't help matters much by being a macho jerk and putting his foot down. Again, wha?!?!?! Who are you people, and what have you done with the real Thompsons?

Not that Roger really wants to go to Cincinnati if it means leaving Susan behind. In the episode's final moments, we learned that Roger couldn't bring himself to get on the plane to Ohio, that he was holing up in a hotel by the airport, and that Susan (frustrated by her increasing disconnection from Bruce) had gone to meet him there.

But wait, hadn't Susan just taken the keys of some guy named Tim at Tom's Labor Day clambake? What happened there? Bruce was sitting on the beach, dumbfounded. The whole thing drove him back into the arms of Melinda, where all the trouble started in the first place. Best scene of the episode was Susan's earlier confrontation with Melinda, where the two had a frank talk about Bruce (who, at that point, hadn't actually slept with her yet, despite his obvious lie about the briefcase. All they had done that night he snuck out to see her was talk. Way to wuss out, Swingtown scripters.) Bottom line, as Melinda explained: Bruce felt like Susan didn't "get him" anymore. As Susan later told Trina, Melinda was probably right about that. Still, it's been clear all season that Bruce doesn't really get Susan anymore, either. Alas, I'm not sure we viewers got enough time to get either of them.

At least Trina and Tom seem to get each other, but maybe they don't get themselves. Trina seemed pretty sure, at the start of the episode, that she wanted to have an abortion, but by the end, she was boning up on her Dr. Spock child-rearing tips. Similarly, at first, Tom (Grant Show, pictured) seemed like he'd be happy to keep partying forever, continuing his end-of-summer clambake/key party tradition into infinity, but when Trina finally told him she was pregnant, he seemed supportive and loving and willing to abide by whatever her decision was, even if he didn't know himself whether he was ready for fatherhood.

Laurie and Doug were still something of a mystery, too. (Show of hands: When Doug announced he was going to Guatemala for several months to help with earthquake relief efforts, how many of you hoped Laurie would go with him, so that there'd be an excuse to write her off the show?) It looked like Laurie was about to run away from her senior year, without even telling her parents, to join Doug, but he left early, and she seemed content to stay behind. At least he left her a nice love letter and the keys to his apartment.

Also not sure what was going on with B.J., Samantha, and Rick. The two boys had reconciled after last week's spat, but while B.J. spent a lot of time mooning over Sam's departure for a few weeks to a town 40 miles away, he spent none over his best friend's impending permanent move to another state. (No one seemed to have asked, Rick, either, how he felt about having to move to Cincinnati.) Rick, at least seemed excited about Lisa's offer to "French you goodbye," but Sam was as miserable as B.J., No wonder -- despite Sam's aunt packing Lisa's mom off to Serenity Shores, Gail apparently checked herself out of rehab as soon as she got there, and she was soon back home and doing coke with a couple of guys, in view of B.J. and Rick. Guess Sam's stint living with cousin Lisa in Naperville could last a lot longer than the promised six weeks.

So: Are Susan and Roger finally going to sleep together? Will Bruce and Melinda make it past the make-out stage? Will the Deckers become parents? Will Janet really stay behind if Roger takes the Cincinnati job? (And will he really take it?) And will we ever find out the answers to these questions? If not, will you be upset?

BRING BACK SWINGTOWN!!! IT'S A GREAT SHOW!!!

BRING BACK SWINGTOWN Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 09:11 PM EST

Please. Someone. Someone with a brain. Find a way to bring back Swingtown.

MEW80 Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 09:06 PM EST

I had almost forgotten how much I missed Swingtown when Bravo broadcast a Swingtown marathon today (Jan 2, 2009). I didn't even know Bravo had purchased the rights to the first (and only) season. Suddenly I have hope that some clever tv exec will see the potential in continuing this great 70s soap. If you love the series, post a comment at Bravo.

Lise Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

Does it indicate the mentality of the mass populace that this incredible show gets taken off and other BS TV out there continues on? WHY? I am living in a cultural TV desert with only some classy fellow TV tasters to connect with? What is happening to the world, has all the taste gone? Please bring us another season or 2 of Swingtown!

steve s. Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Why they took this show off the air & left the "garbage shows" on Primetime one will never know!

Ernestine Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

"Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight...get down tonight..."! This former disco diva wants her "Swingtown" back!!! Ooooh, the memories...best time of my life.

Kelly Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

Please consider renewing it for even 6 episodes just so you can close off the storyline for us very devoted fans! (I would of course be very open to renewing it for longer!)

Tam Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

I'm really hoping to see Swingtown return in the Fall. My husband and I really enjoying watching it every week! I'd be very disappointed to see it cancelled!!

Brenda M. Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

This was one of the shows that both me and my husband looked forward to during the summer. I'm in my late 40s and he is in his early 50s ... we appreciate reminiscing with the styles, work habits, "fun habits" :) and just the way LIFE use to be ... just a little easier, right? Please, please don't cancel the show - this is WAY better than any reality show!

Tess Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

I really miss the show and hope it returns. At the very least, I wouldn't mind a one-time extended episode that fast-forwards to the present time to let us know what happened to these characters. Can you imagine? Laurie would be about 49 now (and probably a Republican).

Caroline K. Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

I really enjoyed "Swingtown" very much. Please do not cancel this show.
Let's have a 2nd season.

Nancy Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

The show is tastefully done while being true to life. The show and it's characters are down to earth and all characters can easily be related to depending on your personality. I hope the show will be brought back for another season.

Kim Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

I love this show. It makes you think about that little vixen in you. Please bring it back, maybe HBO or SHO would be a good spot for it.

Connor Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

Trina and Susan are my role models! Tom is sooo sexy!!! Please bring them back to my life soon. I miss them terribly!

Sherry Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

Bring back Swingtown please!

Randy Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Please dont cancel Swingtown, it is so needy for this country.Nothing like it on regular TV..If they cancel this show, it really does show how stupid and behind the United States is lacking...If CBS doesnt want to bring it back, HBO SHOWTIME should pick it up.....

deschen Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

I guess I'm quite naive. I have been waiting and waiting for the new season to begin...not knowing that there isn't going to BE a new season. I've watched the old shows repeatedly just waiting and waiting. How can CBS not have a second season for this excellent cast?

Janet? What a ditz!!! Talk about an ego that won't stop!!!

deschen Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

I have NEVER started out watching a show from the beginning. I LOVE this show and canNOT believe that it's not coming back. If I was out on a Friday evening, it was taped.

PLEASE, bring it back!!!

Crystal Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

The best show ever. I love it. Please bring it back...

Shauna Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

Does anyone know if this show has been picked up or if they cancelled it?
I REALLY DO LOVE THIS SHOW!

May Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

Swingtown was thoroughly enjoyable. I looked forward to it every week. The characters had depth and revealed increased complexity as the show evolved. My husband and I would talk about them as though they were real people in our life and we tried to anticipate how they would react to the situations they were in on the show. We are sane and have both feet in reality and it was fun to do that. The other shows that have engaged me like this have beenh the real biggies on T.V. If it does not return I will be really angry and think the producers really blew it.

sharron Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

I have missed Swingtown for the last 4 weeks. One week its on Friday and then it seem it was on Sundays. All I want to know is are you going to keep it on Friday at 10 or will the show be moved. I enjoy this show and hate that I have missed the last 4. When will you have the first seaon on DVD? This show is on point so please keep it on the air. Thank you.

Michelle Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:46 AM EST

I love Swingtown! I never watch summer shows or post comments about any of them. I was reading the fall line up & am not too impressed with the new stuff! They really need Swingtown!!!!

Cheri Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

My husband and I love this show, we didn't miss a show and think to our DVR we never had to. It was one of those shows you can get wrapped up in and think back to a time that was a little bit more carefree and exciting. We would be so disappointed if it was cancled.

Mike Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

Best new show on TV!Great cast...Great sets....Great music. If CBS kept Swingtown after CSI this would not be an issue. If they can't find a home for it on CBS, I hope it would move to a Showtime or HBO...Then they can really push the envelope. SAVE SWINGTOWN!!!!!

jim Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

I know this may be odd coming from a man but the characters on Swingtown were compelling and likeable. To me their feelings of conflict, passion and caring that they dealt with were tangible and come across as real. The writing and acting was great and even though I was a child in the 70's I could relate to their situations today in my life and felt a connection as a result. It's a shame that in 2008 people are still irrationaly judgmental and the TV execs, sponsors and the religious right don't care what real people want for entertainment. Enough people viewed this show for CBS and it's sponsors to give it a shot but sadly they probably won't. Maybe we will see it on cable or another courageous and intelligent network, we can only hope.

karolplus Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:41 AM EST

Of course CBS would cancel this show... was there ever a doubt?? They think they earn more money pushing crap, but it's not so. "Swingtown" attracts buying viewers too, just more discriminating ones. Perhaps it'll be picked up by another network who will welcome it in their lineup. I'll really miss these folks. Every prediction I've ever made about the plot has been wrong, and I've been pleasantly surprised with the good writing. I'm headed for cbs.com to add my two cents, but, again, I will miss the show.

SAVE SWINGTOWN! Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

SAVE SWINGTOWN! SAVE SWINGTOWN! SAVE SWINGTOWN!

Marsha Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

I love this show. Please please please bring it back!!!!!

Sue Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

I love this show. I graduated high school in 1973, so all this 70's stuff really brings me back. Swingtown is the only show I look forward to watching. I can't believe it will not continue. Get rid of all the realty shows and keep Swingtown on the air!!

stacy Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

My husband and I love this show. It makes me miss the 70's even though I was only 6 in 1976. Please keep it on the air!

Cristina Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

I just signed an online petition to CBS to bring "Swingtown" back. LOVE this show! I grew up in the 70's and everything about this show (except the swinging) really takes me back in time.

Jess S Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

I am a die hard fan of this show because of the great story lines and it is a one of a kind by taking a huge risk. Please don't cancel this show and put it in the fall lineup to give it a real chance!

Lillian Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Must be the curse of Lana Parilla on summer tv shows. Same thing happened to Windfall.

Lulu Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

I'm confused - why does everyone dislike Laurie so much? She's one of my favorite characters. And let me add my voice to the other chorus - this is an AMAZING show. Please do not cancel!!

SAVE SWINGTOWN! Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

SAVE SWINGTOWN! SAVE SWINGTOWN! SAVE SWINGTOWN! SAVE SWINGTOWN! SAVE SWINGTOWN!

Sina Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:21 AM EST

Get rid of Laurie! That's all I have to say about this show. I like when Roger put his foot down with Janet. She runs over him all the time and I liked when he said that to her.

Amy Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:04 AM EST

You MUST keep this show.. Wah about the ratings. Between The Olympics, threats of horrendous weather, etc there is bound to be a drop in ratings. This is an AMAZING show. It can shock me, make me laugh, make me cry, etc. It is one of the few I cannot miss an episode of. Its my dirty little secret and that of so many as well. Give it another chance, more time. Its a beautiful show that is being killed way before its expiration.

P.S. To the people who judge it so harshly.. It is a history lesson no matter how you want to look at it. It is part of the history of our American culture. Alot of what you accuse it of is actually left open to suggestion.. I LOVE THIS SHOW.. PLEASE KEEP IT!!!!

marie Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

finally a show to look forward to watching, and then gone!! nothing but reality shows, so sick of them!!Swingtown was the best thing to hite TV in a very long time!! (so sad)

jenny Wolfenbarger Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:34 PM EST

Please don't let the show end. I have a whole group of friends that just love this show. We are even having a Swingtown Party where everyone dresses up as their favorite character. We have to know what happens!

Fred A Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

Keep Swingtown! My wife and I love this show! I really does keep you wanting more. It brings you real life.

Tanya Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

I hope like hell this show comes back!! I love this show..I got hooked on the first episode..It was one of the best shows on T.V. It kept you wanting to know more after every episode..Especially after this last one..

Bambidoeeyes Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

Great show! My husband and would enjoy it after the kids went to bed so that we could watch un-interrupted.
Hate to see it end and leave us hanging.

LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW

Kristi R. Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

What can I say? I love love love this show! I so look forward to it every week. It is like a dirty little habit. But at the same time there are some positive things that come out of it. The characters have grown so much and learned so much from eachother. I would hate to see it cancelled before we get the satisfaction of seeing how things end between the characters. i'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

daviidsask Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

I am huge Canadian fan, and hope the show lives on in some capacity!

Laura Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

LOVE THE SHOW! I was around Lauries age at the time and love the details of the show and the characters and their interactions. Hope it comes back!!!

JackSparrow228 Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

I just left my feedback at CBS.com too! I NEED my Swingtown '70s fix and am so bummed I won't have it to look forward to every Friday. I'd even watch the reruns if they showed them. They did such an awesome job of recreating the '70s, right down to the box of Freakies on the breakfast table in every episode! BRING BACK SWINGTOWN!

Lisa Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

This show is awesome. Please, please do not leave us hanging! It's a great escape to my growing up years in the 70's... Finally, a show with a plot, decent characters and keeps my interest. Keep it on, please!!!

Lulu Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I absolutely love this show! I would hate them to cancel it!!!

Wendy Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

I freaking LOVE this show!!!! Please don't take it off the air!! I have fallen in love with all of the characters and I agree we need all of the questions tied up and answered!
Much love to all of you who support this show!! Rock on 1976!

Dear Janet, Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Why do people watch shows they think are trashy? And then don't want people who think it's a quality show to be able to watch? Signed, Swingtown Fan

B Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

I would hate for this show to be cancelled, especially with so many unanswered questions! When Doug told Laurie he loved her, I kinda knew he was leaving without her. And I was glad she didn't go because she is hard headed. Let her run away and that be the end of her character. The Deckers, parents?! Not sure if I'll be able to go thru an episode or 2 without a Decker party. Looks like Samantha's character is done from the looks of her mom who at the end of the day could care less about her daughter. I think Melinda and Bruce will get it on now that everyone is frustrated. Susan and Roger, not so sure.

MoroccoMole Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Please bring back this amazing show, to CBS or any other network that will support it.

(And do we think Rick even knows about Cincinnati yet? Did either Janet or Roger bother to tell him?)

Kristi in Oregon Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Well, I loved the last episode! I just don't want it to be the last episode...I want it to stay! Just cancel Laurie! She bugs the living s#!& out of me!

mother2faith Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 06:07 AM EST

This show is so trashy. I hope it is not renewed.

bootsycolumbia Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 05:37 AM EST

DanOregon, you have a fair point about the characters being uptight for the seventies, but things were a lot different in the suburbs and small towns than in big cities. I was fourteen in 1976 and I grew up in a town of about 60,000. Most kids in that era weren't having sex, and the ones that did didn't talk about it much. I knew of only one girl who got pregnant and had her baby. She had to drop out of school and it was considered quite controversial. Anyone who was gay in my hometown was completely closeted. There was quite a bit of pot smoking and drinking, but on the sexual front, things were still uptight and pretty conservative. Jen in WI, you made some excellent points. I agree with you about CBS not being right for this show. At the beginning of the summer I thought I'd watch it once and smirk at its awfulness (based on the title alone), but it quickly became a weekly habit. I hope CBS renews it; they don't have enough quality shows to dump this one.

mizleslie Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 03:42 AM EST

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed:

"Save CBS TV Show 'Swingtown'!"
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/swingtown?e

I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add your
signature, too. It's free and takes less than a minute of your time.

Thanks!

mizleslie Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 03:07 AM EST

I just left my feedback for CBS. Please go to www.cbs.com and scrolldown to the user feedback. Select Swingtown and give them your request to keep the show!!!

Nick Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 02:23 AM EST

I loved this show!! I haved posted on just about every board I have seen to pled to keep this show on. Never liked A.I., Dancing with stars, Big Brother and the rest of these shows. I can watch law and order and csi anytime of the day. It's all cookie cutter shows. Keep the best show on CBS coming.

Tennessean Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

I LOVE this show. Please don't take it off the air. The cast is awesome Great job guys. The creator, writers and to all the ones behind the scenes, you have done an extraordinary
job in bringing 1976 back. I was 8 years old then but remember the time fondly. Please CBS don't cancel the show. There is a place here on CBS for this show. I prefer it on another night but if Fridays it then I'm there.

Kurt Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

CBS has blown it with this show. The time change move came right when people I knew started to catch it. If a show is not reality cheap or CSI connected, they have no patience. They should give it another chance, but they probably won't. The networks have no long-term vision or respect for quality over cost, which is why they're slowly heading to oblivion.

Hayley Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:23 AM EST

Please please PLEASE keep this show on the air. It is one of the best shows I've ever seen. To put this in perspective....I am a TV junkie, and this show makes me feel alive!!!!!!

Peachy Panda Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

I've watched Swingtown all summer long, and I will be very disappointed if it doesn't continue on some network whether it be CBS, Showtime, or some other cable network. As for my predictions: Susan will NOT sleep with Roger... yet. She couldn't do that to Janet. They'll just stay up half the night talking in the hotel room. Bruce will probably sleep with Melinda. The Thompsons will most likely NOT move to Cincinnati, but even if they do, it won't be for very long. They'll be back in the suburbs of Chicago before they know it! Tina and Tom will have a miscarriage early on. You can't have Swingtown without our swingers swinging! Susan and Bruce's marriage will continue to become even more strained and distant. Janet will find out about Roger and Susan's love interest. She'll be devastated and in denial at first. But I think in the end, she'll let him have Susan. He won't have cheated on her and she will honor his loyalty. I would think less of both Susan and Roger if they had an affair.

dublin Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

Swingtown has been my favorite show all summer! I really hope they bring it back next summer.
My favorite line was when Tom told Trina that she'd never looked as beautiful as she did right then. They became my favorite couple towards the end.

Coconutty Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

Thanks SLJ! I just filled out the feedback form on CBS.com. They better not cancel this show!

angela Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

One of my favorite shows EVER. I LOVED this show; it would be such a shame and disappointment not to bring it back.

Pat from NY Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

I agree with Jen in Wisconsin. I think that if the show had been given a different title, more people would have watched. But the initial promotions of the show as simply about swinging likely made many people uncomfortable. In reality, this show had no more immoral behavior than the reality shows that dominate the networks. I too enjoyed the show and hope it returns in some fashion. The quality of the writing and acting was superb.

jcdc13 Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

I watch very few hour long dramas on TV(and none on CBS), but I adored Swingtown. I wasn't even going to check it out at first because CBS has a history of canceling it's good shows. Well, I did, and Swingtown was by far the best TV this summer.

Another Jen in WI Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

I really enjoyed watching this show over the summer just like another summer show from seasons past called Windfall. I try not to get to into summer shows, since they never seem to get picked up but I hope Swingtown changes that. Honestly, I think the series would have done even better if it had a different name or it was advertised as something other than just "that swinger show" since its such a small part of the true show.

RiCk Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Forget just the summer, Swingtown was by far the best show of the entire year. PLEASE BRING IT BACK SOMEWHERE! Showtime would be even better because it could get a little juicier. The acting, the writing, the nostalgia are all wonderful. The attention to detail blows me away week after week. Did anyone else catch when Doug was flipping through TV and they showed the game show clip, there was also a still of "The Young & The Restless" opening from the 70's?! Details like this are what makes the show. Please save us from more reality crap-ola and bring back this smart show that has so much left to explore.

Everybody don't forget to go to CBS.com and let them know!!!

Jen in WI Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Oops, 'contributes', not 'attributes'.

Jen in WI Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

One more thing about the uptight and disco and youth--the punk movement hadn't made a splash yet in suburbia, so that area of freewheeling non-uptight outlook and behavior isn't relevant to this.
One more thing about CBS--eff them. They probably cowered to the rabid evangelicals and moved it to Friday knowing full well the ratings would tank--to give the a bullet-proof excuse to cancel it without the backlash, but still appeasing the nanny-state. This show would be better off on a premium channel like SHO, or regular cable like FX or AMC. FX is probably better since AMC has the 60s period piece (Mad Men).
I emailed CBS about a month ago, doing what everyone is calling for here. But have since decided that they're not right for this show...it won't last even if they did continue it, they'll cow to the bible thumpers.
The other thing is that CBS promo'd it completely wrong, and misleading which I'm sure attributes to the ratings such as they are/were.
These Einsteins make huge cake.

fran Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

Yes I will be very upset. I really liked this show.

Patrick Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

What a terrific show - so great to see it on CBS??? It's literally an HBO-level quality show. Bring it back for another season!

Jen in WI Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

To: DanOregon, regarding: "...everyone just seemed waaay too uptight for it to be the '70s." I think this is a good point, however, the focus of this show is how middle America dealt with the changing social mores. Janet is one extreme--firmly molded by and a remnant of the 50s housewife framework, Susan is the post-hippie now suburban and pre-curser to the Yuppie, and then Trina the other extreme--the free spirit/rebel heading towards settling down to the lives that Janet and Susan lead.
Were it more like Saturday Night Fever, focused on the youth, or the discos only and the sexual revolution's one side, then I would agree with you. However, to every revolution or upheaval in social constructs, there are those that aren't ready for it, and struggle with it as it invades their life, liking/inviting it or not.
When thinking of the 70s, suburban middle America isn't the first thing that comes to mind, but they were definitely affected (as evidenced in this show.)

I love reading y'all comments every week. I'm suprised how many of you with Lori would leave- I have liked her story, especially using her to ask the black and white questions about love and monogmany (back at the cabin) that only a kid could ask. "If you love dad, you're with him only, what's the point otherwise". I also think Gary missed a few obvious things- Janet and Roger haven't told son yet about moving, else he'd be freaking out. Susan grabbed those keys and got out of there with (poor) Tim just to piss off Bruce. I can't believe people are openly routing for Roger and Susan to hook up- of course I love the chemistry but what would it do to Janet!?! The great thing about this show for me is that it took a seemingly one dimensional character (in early episodes) like Janet and made me really care and root for her. I can't bear the heartache and betrayal she'll feel if Roger and Susan really do "Take it to the Limit". Yikes.

Please please PLEEEEEEEEEEZE bring this show back! It's like a little flashback each week - mostly good flashbacks, some sort of awkward and painful. But still, it's a total change of pace from every other show on the air.

SLJ, that's a terrific idea! Please, everyone do the same, it's just as simple as that. It only takes a moment of your time and there is no need for registration! I submitted my plea to save "Swingtown" as a REQUEST, not as a comment.

Please, everyone let's unite and save this wondeful show!

SLJ Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

Please everyone that loves the show go to CBS.com and leave feedback. On the main page, scroll to the very bottom and click where it says "user feedback". Then you can choose Swingtown in the drop down and leave your comments. It's just as easy to do as posting here, and maybe it will save our show!!!

This is the only show I look forward to watching every week. I can't believe canceling is even a question. Maybe people just haven't given it a chance because of its title. It has so very little to do with swinging. The story lines are so great. I will be so bummed if last night was it.

This show is just incredible! I have enjoyed it since day 1, and I am hoping upon hope it returns in the fall! Bump some of these ridiculous reality shows to make room for it. Everything from the stories to the characters, who are all so fascinating, to the music, which I love how they incorporate those oldies but goodies, all of this just makes it a darn good show! Nostalgia at its best! Bring on the platform shoes, the disco, and bring this hot show back!

Last summer Mad Men was the retro show and this summer we have Swingtown. Of the two i find Swingtown to be more relateable. Its themes are more relevant to a contemporary audience. Even though it's very well made Mad Men has a cold and distant feel to it as opposed to Swingtown's warm and familiar feel. I never quite cared for Mad Men's characters, but i care for Swingtown's. BRING IT BACK !!!

Lisa Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 07:19 AM EST

I've been so hooked on this show all summer! I was down all day when I found out last week that Sept 5's episode was the season finale. I've never had such a strong reaction to a TV show. I identify with each of the adult females -- I'm kind of a Janet, feel like a Susan and wish I was a Trina. I really hope CBS renews for next season or even as a winter season show.

Come on everyone -- let's all go to CBS.com and tell them to BRING BACK SWINGTOWN! BRING BACK SWINGTOWN! BRING BACK SWINGTOWN!

Best show this summer. Best new show of the entire year! I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT !!!

Delon Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

The show grew better with each episode and characters and plot lines got really interesting. I invested my whole summer TV viewing in this show and I WANT SWINGTOWN BACK NEXT SEASON !

Diane Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 06:31 AM EST

I'm also hooked on Swingtown. Looked forward to it each week. Didn't know that was the last show for the season. I'll be very upset if it's not brought back.

DanOregon Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 03:45 AM EST

Those wanting to send something to CBS, I'd recommend old keys, as in key parties.
Liked the episode, but the only characters I want to "hang out" with are the Deckers. And why doesn't Janet just go to Cincy and write the column from there? I won't miss it if it never comes back, everyone just seemed waaay too uptight for it to be the '70s. Did enjoy the game show snippet featuring the answer "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice." So subtle.

Riley Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 03:13 AM EST

Ok I really hope the show comes back next summer- it was a fun series to watch- but they need to get Laurie of the Show- she is the most annoying character on TV right now. Thank god for PVR- every episode I just fast forward pretty much all her major scenes.

YooHoo to Bobbie J. James Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

They still have YooHoo in the glass bottles - at least on the East Coast. Another reason that the EC beats the WC hands down!

Kristi Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

I will be very upset if this show is canceled. I look forward to coming home from work and watching it.

Awesome Finale. I want this show back. I was a kid in the 70's and the detail to the time is amazing. Great writers and love the cast.Props also to the filming(love the cutaways from scene to scene and the profile shot of Susan as she entered Rogers hotel room at the end.)Love the developing friendship with Janet and Trina and want Susan With Roger. Susan just lights up the room when she is with Roger. So many storylines yet to be told with this great show.CBS PLEASE KEEP THIS SWINGTOWN!!

Laura Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

I originally didn't think that I would like the show Swing Town but, I am totally hooked. I really hope that CBS schedules a second season!!!!!

Tess Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 11:59 PM EST

At the risk of repeating..THE SHOW MUST GO ON! Swingtown is the most original, thought out, insightfully written show to hit television. The attention to detail just throws me back to the election. We could all send in peanuts..it is Election time 1976 after all!!!!

Randy Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 11:42 PM EST

Swingtown has brought back some wonderful memories for my wife and myself. The characters and story lines have developed so well over the season, and the music is great. We also appreciate all of the attention given to all the little details. "Thank You" CBS for taking a big chance in making this show. We certainly hope the series will be continued. Swingtown is our favorite guilty pleasure.

Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

Swingtown's writers got a little lazy this time. While the newspaper headline regarding Mercury II is feasible, that Guatemalan earthquake happened in February '76, so to be panicked on Labor Day weekend was a really transparent ploy to get Doug outta there. They couldn't have sent him off to campaign for Carter or something?

That said, I'm really going to miss this show. I don't hold any hopes for CBS seeing the light and renewing it, but at least everything was left at a stopping point where imagination (or fanfic writers) can easily take over.

lisa Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

First, if you love Swingtown, be sure to go to the cbs.com website and voice your opinion there. I doubt any CBS execs are reading here...

Second, I just loved this show. I am so conflicted re: Susan and Roger because Janet is my favorite character. But Bruce is such a tool, I would like to see Susan happy. I also thought Tom was sweet hearing Trina's news.

I really really hope this show comes back mid season or in the spring. It is so much better than so many other dramas out there!!
