Russell Brand's VMA hosting gig: Career suicide or star-making turn?

Sep 8, 2008, 12:16 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Hollywood Hate Crime, Politics as Entertainment, Video Music Awards 2008

Russellbrandvma_l Let me see if I understand the rules: If you're an American celebrity, it's permissible to criticize the president, but not if you do it overseas (see: Dixie Chicks). Now, it appears, there's a converse rule: It's also not permitted for a foreign celebrity to come to our shores and criticize our president and tell us how to vote. Judging by the firestorms that have erupted on our comment boards (here and here), that's the gist of the complaint against VMA host Russell Brand (pictured) for his blunt political advocacy during his opening monologue and throughout last night's show. In particular, he urged Americans to vote for Barack Obama and called George W. Bush a "retarded cowboy" who, in the U.K., wouldn't be trusted with even a pair of scissors. (Doesn't he know that you can't say "retarded" in this country anymore?) The anti-Brand complaint seems to be: You have no right to come over here from Limeyland to tell us how to vote or to mock our president -- that's our job. Then again, many commenters thought Brand was hilarious and spoke truth to power.

Brand also courted controversy by repeatedly making fun of the Jonas Brothers' virginity pledges (and using them as an excuse to make teen pregnancy jokes about Bristol Palin and her fiancee). He issued a sort of non-apology apology about that later in the show, as if someone had twisted his arm backstage, but then threw in an R. Kelly joke, as if to say he wasn't repentant at all. Finally, in stepping on Robert Pattinson's introductory remarks, he alienated untold numbers of loyal Twilight fans.

Now, while I actually agree with most of what Brand said about politics, even I thought his remarks were tacky. So were his jibes at the Jonas Brothers (though Jordin Sparks' response, that promise rings are okay because "not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut," was equally tacky). Still, complaining about tackiness at an MTV production is as futile as complaining about lip-synching or product placement. And Brand's political remarks seemed to play well in the room. Which is why I predict that his controversial emceeing turn may actually have done him more good than harm.

Brand has a history of destroying his career through his own outrageous behavior, and if public sentiment is any guide, he could have done it again last night. But the Hollywood types in attendance on the Paramount lot last night seemed to enjoy him, and their opinion may matter more than ours in terms of his job prospects. Besides, last night's VMAs were as mediocre as ever, but no one can stop talking about Brand, who two days ago was a virtual unknown in America. He'll certainly be a solid test case for the theory that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Tell us, PW-ers, did Brand commit career suicide last night, or will his controversial performance serve as the calling card that lands him bigger and better gigs on this side of the pond?

laughpeople Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 05:07 AM EST

seriously Russell Brand is a genius and I thought he really proved how hypocritical americans can be. I was in Europe watching the VMAs and I just thought how ridiculous when I came back and heard all this news coverage about Russell and the Jonas Brothers comment while the BBC is covering important issues to Americans, like what was happening in Iraq. That is what is down right awful. So case in point, Russell Brand was extremely refreshing and while Paris Hilton publicly supports the Jonas Brothers on their promise rings (seriously true story) people should lighten up and stop being such puritans.

alex gladman Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

russell brand is s genius who probably has an IQ of about 200. If you don't think hes funny then just check out some of his material on youtube.

aubrey Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

I have a really hard time grasping the fact that this guy has a job at all - I mean, really, how hard is it to be an a-hole? Can't we just find someone with better hair to fill this position? There's gotta be some volunteers out there....

Do people really believe this guy is funny?

lokisez Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

russell brand -some nerve. doesn't he know that america is alone on the planet, that nothing we do or say has any affect on anyone else because we are the only nation on earth - or at least the only nation that believes in god? in god and celebrities?in god, celebrities and violence as a lifestyle?

who does he think he is, coming over here and not taking our sacred rites of the VMA awards program seriously? these award programs are like going to church - we worship all those incredibly, amazingly talented geniuses who run our country and determine what we do, say and discuss.

Cheers to Russell Brand. I think his commentary was quite spot on and certainly anything but inappropriate. How is it wrong that a world citizen be concerned with a world superpower? Perhaps my fellow Americans are simply threatened by anyone who has more political sense and concern than themselves. They just do not want a limey who knows and cares more about their state than they do. Either way, nothing he said crossed some imaginary line, his opinions are his own and he may express them. If you don't like it, change the channel.

katie Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

i didnt mind russell, but i was mad when he cut off robert pattinson! :(

buzz Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 02:42 AM EST

I am amazed that in 2008, it shocks some people in USA to learn that, everywhere else in the world thinks Bush and MCCain are a stinking rotten joke. Also, if you are going to use chastity and wholesomeness to promote yourself as an artist, they need to be prepared to roll with the punches. Brand happens to be a genius who has spoken at Ivy League Universities on politics and sex.

Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

Russell Brand is an idiot. He has some nerve to come to America, where no one even knows who he is and insult OUR government. I know people in America make fun of our President too, but its like in elementary school when you made fun of your brother/sister all the time but if anyone else said something about him/her they would be beaten up. The same should be done to Russell Brand. Oh, and why is he telling us how to vote when he knows nothing about politics? He should stick to what he knows - comedy, even though he isn't even funny.

Trip Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Some people take themselves a bit too seriously. He's a comedian, not some head of state. Why do people even care what he says? I found him hilarious. If you don't like him, don't watch him.

Teee Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 09:37 PM EST

Oh Dearrrr...what is up with you americans?!?! Everything he said was not only TRUE, but was also funny! I didnt think much of him at first but now I love him..! Hes so funny and from what ive seen in interviews he has a wicked personality...Maybe the americans just need a bit more time to make their minds up : )

amy Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

ha and good point andy. russell has if anything made us all like him even more, and america has certainly gone down in my estimations.

amy Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

my lord the USA needs to take the stick from up its ass! if some american comedian came to the uk and started ripping Gordon Brown, the entire population(including Gordy) would be weeing themselves with laughter not thinking about banning the comedian from the country!
its surely mental times if people cant even make jokes freely.
and of course a sex addicts gonna make jokes about some wangs wearing chastity rings! perspective?

Andy Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Lol, I love you Americans! How can it be career suicide if he's already huge in the UK? Get over yourselves.

MelissaJ Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Russell Brand was the only entertaining part of that lame excuse for a music awards show.

Some of the world's best comedians--George Carlin, Richard Pryor--said taboo and offensive things. But good comedy often pushes the limits of political correctness.

Brand didn't say anything I found that shocking, but even if he had... they're jokes people! He's a comedian!

Sheesh.

red Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

quite frankly if you are going to be so stupid as to talk about your sexual choices- expect them to be ridiculed. Especiallly if you are some kind of outdated puritan suggesting that "sex is evil"- do what ever you want just don't ram it down my throat; as the righetous godly way- get some life experience boys before you think you can preach
As for the cries that russell isn't PC- well it is what the rest of the world thinks! so right on.

I, too, can not believe people are still bashing him!
It was a joke, yes does anyone know what that means.
He didn't bash Americans, he did a whole political party that many Americans totally agree with his views. He didn't do a thing to me, but made me laugh.

This whole thing he is from another country he has no right. Big whoop! So what are people that blind that they don't realise who is in our political offices effect everyone, even in other countries.

I think he is funny, charming. I can't wait to see more of his work.

JeriKratzhole Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 06:50 AM EST

Krystal, honey, you just keep telling yourself you're not racist. If that's what you need to do to get by, so be it. But I feel sorry for you if you think a video like that one has any validity in today's world.

Paul Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

As a lawyer, I think it's safe to say that your legal system (and therefore government) are based on the Common Law Legal System of England. So yeah, don't all go saying about how great your legal system is, when it's just the aborted fetus of ours.

BUSH FOR DEATH - BRAND FOR LIFE!

Krystal Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Dear JeriKratzhole, Only a person so Liberal and so open minded that the wind blows through his head would get so angry. Just because one disagrees with black politics doesnt mean they are racist. Thats a catch phrase intended to try to demean someone...sorry not here.

Sam Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

Dear god, you would think a country that lectures the world on democracy would understand the difference between criticizing an administration and attacking a country as a whole. You're returning to the McCarthy era, you do realise that, don't you?

James LAnce Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM EST

Really, you people are ranting about the fact that russell brand a comedian might i add made a joke about bush. BUSH!!!! of all people. along with that you're angry because he gave us a suggestion ... a SUGGESTION on who to vote for i think i smell conservatives...... clowns rather.

aS sOUL Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Free Speech was made so that people can say things that we don't agree with. If you're only for the type of speech you agree with, you are not an advocate of free speech.
However, anyone who thinks bush is not retarded, is truly sleeping while their bed is burning!
WHAT HAPPENED TO N.O.R.A.D. ON 9/11?

Jackie Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

It was definitely not an awesome move for him to tell people how to vote. And it annoys me whenever people bash Bush, so he irritated me, yeah.....I saw an Australian on here say they like America; I love Australia too, mate. xD

I hate him. He's a fool. Robert Pattinson was IN THE MIDDLE of talking, and that IDIOT cut him off! I mean, what a stupid, rude jerk.

Mike Cowap Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Here's a comment from Melbourne, AUSTRALIA. Believe it or not, America, the VMA's were screened here as well. I ONLY watched them because Russell was presenting. I saw him live in New York recently and he was just as charmingly bonkers. I love America and the American people. (Anyone know how I can get a visa?) A nation that can laugh at itself, or enjoy having fun poked at it, is happier and healthier. Thanks to MTV for choosing Russell as host. Australia loves Russell.

kctjohnson Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

I thought Brand stepped over the line by bringing in politics at the MVA's. It's just the wrong place. I don't agree with U.S. policies and I personally would make fun of Bush myself, but I just thought the MVA was the wrong place to make those jokes. Given the event, the jokes didn't come across as funny. I actually thought Brand was a rocker, but when I was told he was a comedian, I thought "The man had better quit his day job." In addition to his off jokes, he interrupted Award Presenters which is taboo as a host. He may be popular in Britain, but as for the U.S., his act was definitely career suicide. I am not an American and I appreciate English humour, but Brand simply was not funny at all.

Ahahaha Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

You Americans are so up yourselves.
CALM DOWN. Russell was just having a laugh and you took it far too seriously! He has every right to comment on the American President because whoever is in office effects the whole world, NOT just your country. "Ooohh the Jonas Brothers are so hot, they don't deserve that treatment". SHUT UP. Both their music AND their looks are overrated and personally I feel they are only wearing those purity rings as an attempt to start a trend. Russell is one of the finest comedians Britain has ever produced, so leave him alone and get over yourselves, yeah?

Harry Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

There seems o be a few regular themes popping up on here, from Americans of course. The first is that you think Russel Brand dislikes you or has some agenda with politics, if you ever listened to his regular shows, then you would know he just doesn't care! he was having a laugh, why can't you have a laugh at your quite frankly laughable president, he was right after all.

the second theme is that Brand didn't/ doesn't have a right to broadcast in America on MTV. The VMA awards were broadcast worldwide, it's international for goodness sake!!!

and thirdly, he actually was funny, so so so much funnier than the American rubbish we so often have to put up with.

mike s Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

I went to England in Nov 06 and all of the newspapers had photos of him where he had some ridiculous look on his face. People in other countries HATED George Bush. They should because G.B. Jr stands for everything that is wrong with this country; self important, idiotic, dopey and spacey as he lives off daddy (and America's) money, criminal and pathetic. Trust me, not one country besides the U.S. cares about the complaints on this (or any other ) message board. Remember "we" Americans put him in office...AGAIN.

Cap'n Slappy Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

LOLLLLLLLLL, you think Palin is hot and smart? Wow, you must be one of those geniuses who thinks Britney is an "artist". Congratulations. You win today's Monumental DumbAss Award.

Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Don't forget to watch Russell Brand in the new Disney film, Bedtime Stories. Disney loves Russell; why can't you?

WOW Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

Dear M
We brits have every right to comment on your goverment as it affects us as much as yourselves most of the time. So you will forgive us for showing an interest as previous results from your country havent exactly been wise ones.
Secondly, ooohhhhh Russel made a joke about the jonas brothers, GOOD! They are hardly role modles in my opinion, other than teaching kids an idealistic imaginary way of life and managing to avoid what the real worlds actually like. Its nothing to be admired.
Lastly, Russel made jokes about his own hair which were way funnier than your attempt a comedy, so leave it to the proffessionals.

LOLLLLLLLLL Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

haha, all you liberal hippie pussies are just pissed that McCain and a hot chick who is smart, that none of you liberal fags could ever get, are going to win the white house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

seriously rytin on here aint gonna solve anything. get a life all of u fightin over whats alredy bin sed!!! cant take it bak can he . if he had the chance he wouldnt so whats the point in arugin ??

JeriKratzhole Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

Dear Krystal, to clarify, it's just your moronic McCain who cares about the lipstick on a pig comment. And how obnoxiously stupid and racist are you to recommend that piece of trash video equating Obama's name with Islamic terrorists? Get your head out of your arse, Krystal. You are offensive, ridiculous, obtuse and woefully undereducated.

M Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:33 AM EST

It seems Russell Brand might have at least Thought about what he was going to say in presenting the musicians, at the VMA Awards. Though I am 50 and have a young teenage daughter - and we enjoy the music of today together - I lost interest because of the nasty and inappropriate nonsense in promoting politics (This guy is Brit, and he is telling the U.S. how to Vote?!) - simply ludicrous! -and ridiculing young people in choosing abstinence, masturbation, etc. rather than Music to young people - Russell Brand's continuous Spewing and attacks on the Jonas Brothers was disgusting, inappropriate and like a damn Chihuahua continued badgering and making a mockery of young people choosing abstinence from premarital sex (which is to be respected and admired by the way) I thought the MTV Awards forum was about Musicians and Music - not Russell Brands' witless, inappropriate agenda's. It seems that MTV's powers that be need to take care in their choices who presents these VMA Awards! Mr Brand owes The U.S.A., and the young people of America an Major Apology!! Good on Jordin Sparks who stepped up (the only one by the way to the plate in her retort on Brands' nonsense. Now THAT was Funny! Someone give Russell Brand oars to cross back over the pond and leave the USA - He is completely out of his league here in comedy, self respect, class, and Please - what the fire was that Rats Nest on his head all about?! Sheesh!

fidgited Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 04:39 AM EST

Gee...I cant believe people are still commenting on this too...

Since when is MTV or the VMA's American or owes anything to the USA??? They are a truly multi-national broadcaster with more viewers outside the States than inside...

why do they need to SPECIFICALLY listen to American's opinions on who presents and how their shows should be produced??
If the rest of the world liked him (as I did) then stop your whining and laugh at yourselves for once...

crissakes - everyone else is laughing at you so you might as well....

GETALIFE Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

Dee Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

If Brand hates our country and leadership, then what the heck is he doing here, and why is mtv letting him host the vma's. Whats the problem mtv -- you can't find an
American to host it???

He likes the money everyone pays him - which as u are commenting u are increasing his profile and are therefore in effect contributing to! He also doesnt mind an american women or 3 ! Love the dumbass comment from the guy/girl who noted obahma should be cotton picking. Im sure you are doing really well in life and are in a position to be so small minded in your comment

Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

Can't beleieve people are still chatting about this. I thought he was really funny, I think that maybe perhaps some amercians just arn't ready for him as a comedian yet they obviously just don't have that sense of humour!

Zuzu Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Russell Brand proves the statement "There is no greater shame than no shame."

Amanda Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

MY GOD PEOPLE! I say again, Bye the way the whole purpose of this article and blog is to ask the question did his hosting gig on MTV VMA cause a career suicide or make his career! I think he did a great job getting us to recognize him, because if you didn't know who he was on the VMA's, well you sure do now!!!
p.s. if you don't like him then shove off....

Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

i want to comment on the first comment
by the way tony blair is not the priminister of england moron

Peanut Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

So...you brits whine and complain about the US not getting involved in WWII earlier, but then whine and complain that the US is policing the world and getting involved in foreign affairs. U all suck

BTW Ur Tony Blair didn't seem too opposed to the Iraq situation. Maybe u should elect Russell Brand to Parliament, since he obviously represents your morals and intelligence.

HAHAHAHAHA

BUT IN ALL HONESTY, EVERYONE HERE IS A MORON JUST FOR CONTINUING TO WATCH MTV!!!

Krystal Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

JeriKratzhole, by the way i never once stated that i was for McCain. In actuality they both suck and have nothing to offer this country. They are both horrible politicians and will bring our country and economy father down than it all ready is. Maybe you should watch this video, http://www.eyeblast.tv/Public/Video.aspx?rsrcID=2036

Krystal Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

Dear JeriKratzhole, who really gives about some dumb lipstick on a pig comment, i think our country has a little more to worry about than that since were falling apart. and Jon, you must be an Obama supporter.

Jim Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Ive been to America and all over the world, and ive got to say i felt least free in America! I cannot beleive how ignorant americans are when a lot more that half of them havnt been out of there own country and then you have loads of americans saying they live in freedom as if nobody else does in the world! They dont realise how indoctrinated they are about there own country

lam Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

This Russell Brand (who I'd never heard of before this week) is a wonderful performer who I'm really looking forward to seeing & hearing more from. From the little I saw of the VMAs (would have had to kill myself if I'd watched it all) he was refreshing but not quite at the top of his game that night. Where he hit it hard was on Craig Ferguson's "Late Late Show" on Wed. Quick, funny, open, smart, high energy & no, I not related to him. If he's famous at home, I get it & welcome his talent to our fine if clearly conflicted country.

Amanda Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Why Lisa, your so wise!I agree, and thank you. I too can't Waite to see Bedtimes stories with "THE SANDMAN".

Lisa Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

Dear, Sweet Amanda. Please try to keep in mind, we must suffer the fools. As hard as it is, remember you will always find a little black ink stain on the most beautiful white linen, a glaring scratch on the shiniest hardwood flooring, bird crap on your newly washed windshield.... er go, AJ. You bring up the most important point - RUSSELL BRAND will have Americans right where he wants us once Forgetting Sarah Marshall hits stores on 9/30. He has been on every latenight show, some twice, since May and he just keeps getting better and better at it. He's brilliant. All the VMAs have done for him was make him an American household word whereas before, he was the UK's very own best kept secret. I can't wait to see Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler or Get Him to the Greek, which is now in production. If you want to see something really sad, go to youtube and look up drinkingwithbob on Russell. What a buffoon!

Amanda Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

Mike, Lisa! THANK YOU! I have been fighting with this guy over just what you were discussing and completely agree! Please AJ move on or blog elsewhere. Bye the way the whole purpose of this article and blog is to ask the question did his hosting gig on MTV VMA cause a career suicide or make his career! I think he did a great job getting us to recognize him, because if you didn't know who he was on the VMA's, well you sure do now!!!
p.s. if you don't like him then shove off....

Lisa Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

Dear Mike, you're very welcome.

Lisa Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Dear AJ, I notice that every time someone posts something you disagree with or construe as an attack on 9/11, you question their nationality. I'm an American, a little hillbilly in WV actually. I won't respond to you again, and hopefully, neither will anyone else, as it is painfully obvious to all that you're simply not eating the right kind of bread. You cannot be mentally well. You post the most ridiculously irrelevant and repetetive posts that I have ever seen anywhere. What Russell Brand may or may not have done 7 years ago on 9/12, whether or not in bad taste, is done and most likely, he feels badly about himself. I for one can think of many things I've done in my life that seemed like a good idea at the time but make me wish now I could wave a magic wand to make them disappear. Please go away, you're terribly boring, and quite apparently, a very sad little creature. I bet you wish you looked like Russell, could get the ass he gets when he wants it, and had his $$$. Be gone!

Mike Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

Thank you Lisa.
Why does 9/11 come up on the topic? Only to affirm that Brand's comedy is cruel, maybe even awkward at times? When asked who he was, Brand replies, "I was involved in 9/11...the clean up and investigation." Certainly, his unique appearance allows people to find that funny.

Seven years ago, I don't think Brand fully understood the severity of the 9/11 attacks and the emotions stirred about when in discussion. I think he does now though. I forgive him and people are able to forgive such an unimportant detail of his past. We are capable of forgiving much worse events.
I could not imagine if AJ were my judge. Most of us would be guilty of worse offenses than taking 9/11 "too lightly."
I know 9/11 is a sensitive topic because it is still fresh. Most people don't consider crimes against humanity that have occurred all throughout history and some are taken entirely "too lightly."
Brand is humorous and until he does something TRULY wrong, I won't be indifferent.

AJ Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Lisa.. the fact that Russell Brand intentionally insulted America after 9/11 doesn't bother you in the least. So one can only assume you are not an American. Are you a Brit?

Lisa Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

AJ, how many relatives did you say you personally lost on 9/11? You obviously were deeply traumatized that day seeing as you can't get past it. I'm thinking the actual widows and widowers are dealing better than yourself.

AJ Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Mike and Lisa... did you love Russell Brand mocking America's dead the day after 9/11? Wasn't it great? Do you hope he mocks the women and children who died on 9/11 every year? What a great role model he is. Maybe if you're lucky, he will urniate on the graves of our soldiers next time he is in town. Would make a great MTV show. Disney should do I pilot. Quality stuff.

Lisa Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Mike, please don't forget the American Indians. I wonder if they have received their apology in the mail yet? Just sayin'...

Mike Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Russell Brand owes no such apology to the United States. Such a request is ludicrous and perverse. The US is a country that has yet to have a public, nation-wide apology for the enslavement of Black Africans. Yet, Russell Brand owes American citizens an apology?

Pertaining to President Bush, Brand's observations are clear and true. The US has to ask the question (based on what, race?) if the brilliant Obama, with degrees from Harvard, editor of their law review journal (it doesn't get more prestigious)--is capable of replacing a president whose IQ is estimated at about 90, just below normal. I wouldn't trust Bush with scissors either.

Also, Brand was hosting MTV's VMAs. I never knew that MTV was a network that boasted manners of good nature, with such shows as "Shot at Love," "Busted," and of course the "Spring Break" specials.

Also, you can catch Russell Brand in the new DISNEY film, Bedtime Stories, coming out soon. Adam Sandler is co-star. Disney loves Brand.

Amanda Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Irrelevant, was 7yrs ago and people make mistakes, God forgives Why cant you?Let the dead rest in peace!

AJ Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Was he funny on 9/12?

Tina Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

It's too bad that Russell's first impression to most Americans was the VMAs. It wasn't his best night by any stretch but neither were the VMAs. Look up youtubes. He's incredibly funny. AJ - get back on your meds AND HURRY!

Leigh Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 05:39 AM EST

Hah. I love Russell Brand to pieces. Yes he may have gone a tad far with his jokes but THAT'S WHAT HE DOES. Look at all his stand up comedy/radio show/Big Brother UK/newspaper articles from the past. He's not afraid to give his opinion. The producers knew what they were getting into when they asked him to host. He's been so successful in the UK for a reason.

FrankSyntax Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 05:18 AM EST

Kitty: 'he hasn't received ANY press' - he was on Leno, Kimmell and craig ferguson last week, x

fidgited Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:35 AM EST

Ive only seen snippets and what I saw was funny (scissors!) and rubbish at the same time - unfortunately the 'Y'/new MTV generation seems to be split between protesting virgins and howling nymphos...so hard to market that content to everyone...MTV tries to stay controversial and rock n roll but in line with the marketing dollar...

But the bit i find most funny is Americans becoming so puritanical about 'coming over to our country and telling us how to vote" when America's foreign policy for the past (50??) years has been exactly that (and so much more...)

WOW Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:31 AM EST

Good God People

I live in England and seriously you need to chill out.

All this HOW DARE HE and general disgust.... THEY WERE JOOOKKKEEEESSSSS. Russel is huge in the uk and I agree, I think he should come back to where people take him for what he is and dont over analize the hell out of it.

I thought Americans were suppossed to be the outrageous ones.

I only tuned in becasue of him, and he rocked as ever and im proud that he is from our country. Charastmatic, excentric and outspoken and every bit hysterial. Yes on occassions he mocked you a bit, but dont take yourselves so seriously.

I dont belive all Americans are like some of you and to those who got him and had a chuckle at the worlds more serious points good on ya, we all deserve a break if ya cant laugh at yourself what can ya do.

Kitty Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

Russell is not funny nor entertaining. The audience seemed more stunned than entertained! In addition to Brand being non-entertaining, he hasn't received ANY press, let alone good press. NOT A GOOD SIGN for a "personality"!! We won't see him at the next award show. I predict he will end up like Boy George.... rock BOTTOM.

Amanda Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

WOW!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe you went there,I at least thought that we as a people or as AMERICANS were at least beginning to get past such racism, it just goes to show you that we have a long way to go..

Amanda Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:34 PM EST

Bye the way this thing we are doing back and fourth, arguing our sides, having an opinion... That is what is called the Freedom of speech,Freedom of opinion,Freedom to do and say what we want, that is the American way and you like I, do this every day..In a world where other countries don't have that freedom. In regards to 911 any negative talk is distasteful in my opinion, but it is his right to do so in any way...I choose however to honor there deaths by being grateful to still have a choice, opinion, or to simply be alive..Let the dead rest and don't use them as an excuse for close mindedness...

momo Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:24 PM EST

well, after watching the vms for 5 minutes, brand got very annoying, he doesnt really have the right to tell americans who to vote for, he was just supporting the niggers cause its something new to do.

The people Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

By the way the name is "AMANDA"

The people Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

Moka is it??? You know there is this thing on the dish or direct TV called parental control!!! that you should have used and if not available then the use of common sense or as they say View discretion advised....If you didn't want your child exposed to the freedom of speech. By the way haven't you learned by now that tv is now not about what is right it is about getting you to watch and clearly it did do that..And to your statement on the holey Jonas brothers, clearly they are human and as a mother myself would love to believe there good intention, I believe they are human and in this day and age sex has become very common in our young ones and we can't put our children's faith in actors or singers as role models, we just have to hope that we have instilled in our children the knowledge and hope that they make the right choices in life and that includes sex...

AJ Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

Andre... not on a high moral horse. Just the most basic of morals and reason. Something long gone for MTV apparently. I will say.. for MTV to hire someone who is known for mocking the families of 9/11 victims speaks volumes about MTV, Pepsi and Verizon. For the people on this site who support Russell Brand anyway... all I can say is... have some sort of standards. I know MTV has lowered the bar a few notches.. but it doesn't get any lower... and many of you are applauding. Simply amazing.

AJ Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

TO THE GREAT UNWASHED: Do you support Russell Brand walking up to the 9/11 memorial tomorrow dressed as Osama Bin Laden to mock the families (like he did 7 years ago)? If your answer is yes... you are not a person... you are a turd. If you would find that offense (like normal people), then join me in boycotting MTV, Pepsi and Verizon for hiring this filthy subhuman drug addict to infect our TV shows. Other than that... I have no strong feelings about the matter.

Moka Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

This is a response to the Nameless one below whom 'FORGOT' apparently to place an identity by their dimwitted comment.

Oh, and by the way - if there is an Video Award Show, and the Jonas Brothers are performing, and I have a teenager who wants to watch it, HELLOOOOOO - it should be about Videos and Music, NOT about the following -

How disappointing to have to Stomach and Endure this Nonsensical and Inappropriate Russell Brand Spewing's!! Taking shots at our Commander in Chief, making a mockery of young people who choose abstinence from premarital sex (which is to be commended and honorable), and continuing like a rabid Chihuahua attacking such great role models like the Jonas Brothers is deplorable and unacceptable!! Russell Brand's continued sexual comments about masturbation and his political musings in telling us who to vote for when he doesn't have the privilege or right to vote in our country is absolutely ludicrous! All of this my 14 year old daughter was exposed to!! How can MTV Sanction This?! Russell Brand owes this country and especially the Young Americans a Major Apology!! Somebody please give this moron Russell Brand oars to cross back over the pond and go back from under the rock he came out from! We are so done with MTV, and the VMA Awards. Looking at the complaints posted here, seems this station is about to go belly up! Good riddance!

Andre Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

Wowie AJ has some bile in him. Russell Brand wasn't particularly funny but I don't think it's worth giving sanctamonious speeches about the man-with crude emotional blackmail about 911 and an obsession with his former drug habits. And it's pretty tiring to hear the knee-jerk "he's got no right..." because he's British. In England we've at least come to learn that everyone has the right to say what the like and make jokes about what they like. There are no sacred cows-please disembark the moral high horse AJ.

The people Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

AJ, you ignorant ass! Point blank the beauty of the USA is the freedom of speech and your an idiot if you think that a comment or two from someone like Russel Brand can actually sway the people of the USA to elect a president of his choice. Seriously, like any self respected American would let an actor or famous person for whatever reason effect your decision of the person you elect for president. You make me laugh, if it bothers you so much, ignore it! plain and simple! it's you right to ignore it or your right to say it or your right to do it!!!! That's the beauty of the USA...When it come down to election day, the people will vote for who they favor, not you or I or Russel will decide for them. GET IT!

Becky Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

hah, it's absurd to me that people are saying that Brand "has no right to come over to our country and say his opinion!" I didn't know that foreigners weren't allowed the freedom of speech that everyone else allegedly has the minute they set foot on US soil. Russell's a hoot.
