If Ricky Gervais hosted the Oscars, would you have a laugh?

Rickygervais_l As Hollywood Insider reported this week, the Academy could be courting Ricky Gervais to host the 2009 Oscars telecast. He's got movies out (Ghost Town) and in the works (This Side of Truth, costarring Tina Fey), and his off-script "Give me back my Emmy" exchange with Steve Carell marked one of the few bright spots of this year's Emmys. Gervais justified his going wildly off-script with typically self-effacing reasoning: "I've got nothing to lose here -- I'm a nobody here." Hardly, but someone relatively unconsumed by the Hollywood bubble -- and not afraid to pop that shizz -- could make Oscar night an unpredictable, brilliantly subversive mess. Want to see Gervais host? Let us know in the below poll.

I believe ricky gervais would be a fantastic host for the oscars, not too give him a chance to prove himself would be a great shame. If Hollywood want entertainment at its best, then ricky gervais is the right man to give it to them.

susan firth Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

You are like a fresh gust of windy laughter clearing

the dust and elements of musty blank away.

Great intro for american spot light.
I personally live where TV reception is not available
so miss out on your past performances here in U.S. of A.
Greatly impressed by your humor.
An artist. You have my vote on anything.

Jo Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 02:20 AM EST

I think Ricky Gervais would be the ideal host for next years awards. He's a comic genius and EVERY minute of the show would be entertaining for a change!!Maybe Steve Carrell as co host!look out Hollywood!Put your therapists on speed dial!

rickygervaisfan Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

Don't do it Ricky. The Americans love to build you up so they can knock you down. I love that you are unique and special. They will suck that right out of you. rgf

fancypants Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

diablo cody? no. she's too self-obsessed and her humor is cheesy and immature. wanda sykes is a great choice though, but all are second to STEPHEN COLBERT!!!

Robin Cattani Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Yeah I think Ricky Gervais would be perfect for the oscars, Maybe with Karl Pilkington!

queen of disrepair Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

The Oscars, like the Emmys and all other award shows need a successful maitre'd to host, not a "performer". A host needs to move action along, make sure people who are waiting are happy and people who aren't happy, are made so. If a host can fill in with the quip or be quick-thinking, that's another plus. But, no one likes a snotty maitre'd who makes them feel looked down upon. You can be "too" clever to be successful, at least at a hosting job. That's what makes Carson, Bob Hope and Billy Crystal legendary at the gig. They knew when they should come forward and when to respond to the customer (audience) needs. Gervais is not self-deprecating enough to handle all three (or more) tedious hours of the broadcast they way these things are traditionally done. I'd like to recommend Craig Ferguson, Tavis Smiley, Kristen Chenowith, Neil Patrick Harris, Alan Alda, Taye Diggs, Diablo Cody, Wanda Sykes are all solid performers who understand timing and pacing. All would be great hosts.

I would love to see Steve Carell host, but I doubt that he would do it alone. Now if you teamed him up with Ricky Gervais, that might, work. If not them then the teaming of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert would be great!

orville Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

I don't know. I think that in situations like this, he's better in small doses. I love him to death, but I'm not sure how his type of humor would go over during a long, self-important awards show. Over here, he's still an acquired taste, not the huge star he is across the pond. He does have a bit of insider status though--most of Hollywood was lining up to be lampooned in "Extras." So who knows--maybe he would do well.

keiren63 Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

"off-script"? Are you kidding? Steve Carell just happened to have an emmy under his seat? 'Cause we're supposed to believe that he actually walks around with it. I can believe that they improv'd it...but it was planned.

Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:33 AM EST

Just because of one funny, off script joke this guy made at the emmys makes him the prime candidate to host the oscars? Cmon! Not a lot of people even know who this guy is and judging by the box office of his latest film, the ones that do know arn't many. Where's Billy Crystal when ya need him!

fancypants Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

i like gervais, but i would really, really prefer to have stephen colbert host instead. i mean every single little thing colbert does is hilarious, even the most subtle facial expressions. plus he'd be more familiar to the audience in the kodak theater and the audience at home. plus, imagine all the hilarious taped bits he'd do.

DanOregon Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

This guy busted the chops of Prince William and Harry during the Diana tribute concert, Hollywood "royalty" would be a piece of cake.

Marie Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

It would be GREAT if the powers that be do not try to reign him in too much!

Matt Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

Honestly, i would love for Gervais to host the Oscars, but i don't think i could watch it if he did. Finally watching a funny edition of the Oscars would probably make my head explode.
