Remembering Pink Floyd's Richard Wright

Sep 15, 2008, 03:46 PM | by Adrienne Day

Categories: In Memoriam, Music

Pinkfloyd_l I was a teenager once, which means that I owned the biggest album of 1979 -- Pink Floyd's The Wall. I first got hooked as a wet-behind-the-ears high-school freshman when my best friend dubbed it for me on cassette, then bought the vinyl after seeing the film and fully embracing my addiction to their gravity-defying psychedelic rock. I soon graduated to 1975's Wish You Were Here and 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, which went on to sell over 40 million copies and spend 14 years -- years -- on the Billboard 200 album chart. Later, in college, when trying to impress the gatekeepers at my school's radio station, I whiled away hours decoding 1969's sticky, experimental Ummagumma. Had I logged as many hours studying for my chemistry Regents exam as I did at New York's Hayden Planetarium for "Laser Floyd," or dumbly plucking away at the Pentatonic scale on my friend's electric guitar, it's possible I'd be an entirely different person today. A slight exaggeration, maybe, but it's hard to overestimate the influence the titans of U.K. space rock have had on my life, and the music that so frequently guides it.

Richard Wright, who died today at 65 after a battle with cancer, was a founding member and keyboardist for Pink Floyd. While not as famous in his own right as the late guitarist-vocalist Syd Barrett and bassist-vocalist Roger Waters, he was instrumental in the development of the iconic Floyd sound -- the anthemic organ swells, the layered synth riffs. He wrote a few of their big hits, including Dark Side's "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us And Them," and worked on songs such as "Atom Heart Mother," "Echoes" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Waters famously fired Wright during the recording of The Wall, and Wright was relegated to session-musician status for years, during which he released two solo albums, Wet Dream, in 1978, and Broken China, in 1996. But even from the sidelines, Wright devoted most of his musical life to Pink Floyd.

Chances are good that you or your friends experienced some sort of Pink Floyd phase when you were younger -- my PopWatch colleague Gary Susman calls them the "Holden Caulfield" of bands -- so it seems appropriate to open up the message boards and hear what you all have to say. All I will add is, thanks for helping open those doors, Richard. And hope to see you one day at that great gig in the sky.

For more on Pink Floyd, check our coverage of Roger Waters at Coachella this past spring, a review of Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey and of the 1995 music documentary Pulse.

I can't remember ever reading such an amazing outpouring of emotion by so many different people across the globe. It's incredibly moving and inspiring to realise that others feel pretty much exactly the way I do about Rick Wright and the indescribably sublime music of Pink Floyd. The best band of all time by far.....Shine on Rick!

Laser keyboards drilling into your brain and soul. Stare into the night sky and see forever. Bye.

Kannan Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 03:11 AM EST

His keyboards lent Pink Floyd its melody. He was an esssential part of their musical succes. I guess his quiet nature and no nonsense attitude made him leave Floyd(though it is perceived he was eased out). He was not the guy who could take any nonsense from other band members especially Waters.
He came back with a bang to reproduce the old floyd magic with Division Bell.

He will always Shine through......
May his sould rest in peace.

Carl Lategan Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 03:06 PM EST

I grew up in apartheid South Africa where we were “protected” against bands like Pink Floyd. However, just like any teenager in the late 70’s early 80’s, don’t tell us we can’t. I went through the biggest “changes” in my life and along with my friends grew up and went through our hormones on Pink Floyd lines and rhymes. While I was in the army, it was songs like the final cut, wish you were here and the wall that kept me sane and reminded me about my home and friends. I never got to see the greats like Wright in live concert, the closest I came was to see Roger Waters when he toured South Africa a few years ago. What I would have given to see the entire band live.
Rick, dust to dust maybe…. But your legacy and influence will live on forever. What you created will never fade.

I am so upset. I just found out 4 days ago. I wish

I had someone to talk to instead of my tears

floating alone in space. This hurts so much. Pink

Floyd was my 1st major group. My mind merged with

the sound of this group. I did have hope of new

music or a tour and that desire is will not ever

live now with your passing.

Rest in peace Richard Wright. I wish you knew my

thoughts before you past. I saw you twice in 1988

and 1994. I read so many nice things about you. I

am sorry your other band members were not kind to

you but you are a class act.

Let your spirit live in all of us buddy. :-)

Mike Eldridge Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

In 1975 I saw Pink Floyd at Boston Garden. I often tell people I went in straight and came out pink.
God Bless Rick, u were and are much loved...

Tears on my keyboard. The Floyd is no more, Long live the Floyd !

Suzanne Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Thank you so much for giving us the beautiful music you have made with your colleagues of Pink Floyd together but also all of your solo work. I will miss you being around here and especially your influence on many many good songs you wrote.
You will be deeply missed.
We will remember you forever.

Thank you Rick Wright, for Versailles, for my freedom, for our freedom, for my heart, for my live, for your amazing music, for your kidness....I'll never forget you!

Pink Floyd is the soundtrack of my life. Even i knew there was few chance the band produce another album, I secretly kept on hoping be surprised again... Since Rick's death, I cry and burry this hope definitively as I burry in mind our regreted Rick. Thank you so much Mr Wright. You were the cement of the band, the sweet harmony, the gliding organ and keyboard which fits so well with David's Guitar. I'll miss you. If there's a place looking like a kind of paradise, I hope to deserve to go there and they play Pink Floyd music... Maybe Dave, Nick and Roger will be already there and the music you didn't do here on earth, you'll make us listen up there... Your memory will always shine in me.

Thank you for giving mr that music that makes life sometimes easier for me

mike Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

I am sad to hear of his passing but I am more upset that it has received so little coverage in the press. A legend of his status deserves a lot more credit then he has gotten. Thank You Mr. Wright for giving me the music that takes me to another place every time I hear it pulsing through my ears. Your talent will truly be missed.

acotton Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Richard will truely be missed. I had the pleasure to see him perform several times over the years. It's a sad day for rock and roll when one of the best passes away but thoughts and prayers for his family and hope someday i'll see you on the dark side of the moon.....RIP

My first exposure to Floyd was at 15 and Ummagumma. They instantly grew on me in 1970. 3 years later it was the Dark side of the Moon concert in Detroit MI at Cobo Hall. It was a knock out concert that I think was their best ever. They blew up the stage somewhat with a couple canon fireworks halfway into the concert. They had to halt the concert because some amps were knocked over in the blast. Everyone was just STUNNED and STONED. Probably all 20,000 or whatever the seating was there.

Anyway, Richard Wrights keys were the grounding and mesh that made Floyd. Very unmistakable and so very musical. Long after we are gone, Floyd and Wright will be still rocking the people.

Julio Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

Estoy sin palabras, Ve con Dios Richard.

beverly Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

This is such a terribly sad time for all of us true Pink Floyd fans. I can only say they are clearly the best band of all time, always have been and always will be. No others even come close. You are truly missed Richard, and David and Nick, we love you guys.....

DJ REBEL Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

I was fortunate enough to see all of you perform and close enough to see the sweat form on your foreheads from the intense lighting. I enjoyed your props as well. My favorite of all time was the one i saw in i believe in 1987 at the Orange Bowl in Florida. The exploding pig was awesome. I know Richard Wright will be missed by musicians from all over the world, we as DJ's will also miss him and we grieve along with your loss. My heart and prayers go out to the band and his family. Mr Wright may have left us but the songs that he wrote will be an everlasting image in our ears and our minds. God bless!!!!

Umar Anwar Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

i'm sure even God is seeing him performing Live on the Great Gig in the Sky..

RIP Richard Wright.. your music surely changed my life...

Lindsay Jones Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

Richard Wright will be missed... what an iconic ledgend!!! I have adored Pink Floyd since I was a little girl, and I am saddened to hear of his loss... The day I turned 18 I had Pink Floyd's ledgendary album "Dark Side of the Moon" tattooed on my back... Pink Floyd opened a door for me, a door that no other band has ever come close to opening. They are iconic, and rightly so. So much of todays music is influenced by their sound, style, and basic notion.
My thoughts and prayers will be with Richard's family during this difficult time... God Bless.

Paul Foxx Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

I first met richard and the boys back in the 70s and he was one of my influnces in learning keyboards, my thoughts go out to all the other members at this time. The Floyd have shaped a generation or two with their music and the ethos of making it a "SHOW" not just playing the music.
As time goes on we lose that which makes our lives better through the bad times by giving us the means to lift our spirts with their music, i cant see many of the current crop of bands leaving the kind of legacy of great music the floyd have left to future generations.

Richard making great music in the hereafter we will remember you.

JEFF Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

Literally, as far back as my memory can go, I have liked music. I say that to say this: the first time I listened to "Dark Side of the Moon," I knew I was hearing MUSIC in all its fullness for the first time in my existence--LITERALLY!!!

In a similar way and in the deep way that Pink Floyd's music moves me, I am moved to real sadness to learn just this evening of Richard Wright's death. I know I cannot even imagine how saddened his family and his musical family, especially his good friend, David, are. I feel with them, though I confess in the same breath that my sadness must pale in comparison to those who knew this gifted musician so personally.

I can say this: I am thankful that Richard was with David on the "Remember That Night" tour! I have watched intently and listened intimately to that DVD numerous times . . . and I will again tonight . . . with gratitude that those moments were captured for all of us to share and experience--repeatedly.

Thank you, Richard and David!!!

Darren Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Wright Family, and to the Members of "The Floyd". To all the fans, we have lost an original. Rick and Syd will orchestrate "The Great Gig In The Sky" melding into "Astronomy Domine" May Heaven Welcome You Home

Brian Urso Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Man....I'm speechless, I was hoping Dave and Roger could bury their axe (eugene) and get back together. Rich to me was the true musician of the group with his great jazz-like chordal arrangements, using major and minor sevens (unheard of in rock except for the beatles) in such beautiful haunting tones. And what a wonderful voice he had, soft but chilling in the same breath. Shine On Richard you will be missed.

The Echoes of Eternity.........

joe Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

the gentleman and true soul of the band discreetly kept the flow of the bands music. provided harmony and melody to the otherwise harsh and cynical waters' rock melancholy. a ray of light to the cryptic and at times desperatly alienated floyd.

Ozzy Ventura Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

My Prayers to Ricks family.

Never knew him personally, But without him Floyd would have not been ! It took 4 of them to make their Wonderful Sound ! RIP RICK !!!

Brett G Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Pink Floyd was the bets!Good by Rick Wright. You will be missed

Pete Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Vastly underrated. Wright contributed two of the highlights ("Us and Them" and "Great Gig in the Sky") of the Floyd's best record, Dark Side of the Moon. Let's not forget his wistful early songs "Remember a Day" and "Paintbox." I'll always associate Pink Floyd more with Rick's melodic keyboard playing than guitar. Sad to lose a wonderful musician like Rick Wright. Wish you were still here, Rick.

Phil Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Rick was truly the overlooked talent of Pink Floyd. The wonderful music he created, and the brilliant way in which he played, added an undeniably irreplaceable element to the Pink Floyd sound. His contribution is immeasurable. But more than just a tremendous musician, he seemed like such a sweet and gentle soul. Definitely someone I wish I knew personally (though in certain ways it feels as if I did). Having Rick leave us is SUCH a devastating loss, but the music he made will continue to spread joy and light for years and years to come. I miss you Rick. God bless.

Robert Victoria Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

The band has been a part of me since my high school friends first popped the Dark Side of the Moon 8-track (yes THAT ancient technology!!!) into the slot and I heard 'Breathe' for the first time. It has been a love affair with their music ever since. I saw them on June 19, 1977 in Chicago, on April 5, 1994 in Houston and finally on Live 8 on July 2, 2005. The dates are forever stamped in my psyche. On that Live 8 show I was watching it on the AOL webcast (forever grateful to AOL for making that moment LIVE) and as I watched it the welled-up emotion of that historic moment was simply too much, prompting my kids to ask: "Are you OK, Daddy?". I guess that last show has more meaning now that Rick is gone. But The Floyd, and especially Rick live on for the band is and always will be an integral part of me. Shine On Rick!

nahi Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

I really have a sad day since rick die. they realy change my life.. there's no band ever born like pink floyd..every piece of music they did is perfect and real..I'll never forget them even for one day.. pink floyd can't be pink floyd without the four masters, rick dave nick and waters.richard death cut the dream for complete reunion legendry pink floyd, but we still have a hope to see them trebute a tour for rick...
the pink floyd music will continue played every where houndreds years from now....
have a great gig in the sky Rick
and shine on ...................

Chipsy Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 06:40 AM EST

Pink Floyd never were just about Roger and David, they were always a band in it's proper sense. Rick added the style, the jazz progressions and the introspection that just added so, so much. No Rick, no Floyd. Simple as. See you at the great gig...

mike Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:51 AM EST

summer of 68, us and them, atom heart....brilliant. such a huge impact on my life. No music affects my heart and soul the way pink does. And now, I have been a punk rocker for 15 years. Yet floyd trumps all. And what funny about that is ALL PUNK FANS KNOW THIS! Ha! they all dig floyd....its the weirdest thing.

As for Richard, the keyboards pulled it together. Seriously, the most underrated musician in the biggest underground band of all time. gravity defying for sure. we love you rick.

Elaine Squires Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

Keep on making that great music, wow what a band...

Mark Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

What a loss. From day one when I became a Floydian I quickly enjoyed Rick's low key persona & his little smiles & gestures during concerts. I'm pretty bummed. Just recently watching a docu on the latest DVD from David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall, there are sceens with Rick & Gilmour that are priceless. The music world has lost a LEGEND. Sid, you are now in GREAT company.

Janet Mills Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

I have heard some aweful news today,
A well loved man of many has passed away. We wish you were still here. We all wish forever. But one day We all will see, your face waiting for me.

OMG another one has left me ohh what pain for me. Another I will always love and never meet.

Pink Floyd has always ment the world to me. I have seen them only 2 times. Makes me sad to say I'll never see them again. For I am in the USA and it's been 14 years since they have been here. I wish I had won the lottery only to go see them. When I go and meet him one day we will sit togather and play the music we both love, for when I die as I have always said, I want a player of some sort playing in my grave nothing but my all time favorite, all day and all night (with a few hour break) Pink Floyd. With all the love and respect to him and his family, my family loves and will miss, and NEVER forget you.
Sincerly,
The Mills

Michael Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Wright’s love of improvised jazz as well as his passion for cohesive classical music very much led to the creation of the "concept album." The gravity of his musical contribution is understood by few but appreciated by all. A true force behind Floyd, he really was about making the music paramount; he let it stand for itself. He had no qualms about contributing fame and renown to the icon that Floyd had grown into. Unlike many of his band-mates, he was proud of what they built. He also was a good person. With Syd’s passing went any possibility of revisiting Floyd’s early years. With Wright, we’ve pretty much lost the rest of Floyd. Goodbye talented friend— Gone to the Great Gig in the Sky.

I have, as many people have, enjoyed...no loved...the music of Pink Floyd. I have followed them from the early days, through the fantastic stadium concerts and their individual careers. I too was disappointed when rumors of a "reunion tour" turned out to be just that- a rumor. We are all getting older and so are the people we have enjoyed for so many years. I am just glad to be able to say "I saw them in concert and they were fabulous!" Good luck Richard where ever you are. And , thanks.

maureen bensinger Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

As I was so happy to hear there may have been a reunion tour- my heart is broken that a member of the floyd family has passed. I have been a fan since the 70's and no band can take you on a journey with them better than pink floyd. My son will finally meet/greet Rick on the other side as he past in 2000 and loved floyd as well. Wish you were here is our song and we would like to dedicate that one to Rick from us. May he rest in peace.

It was very sad to hear about the passing of Richard Wright. I'm sitting here listening to PULSE from 1995. More than ever, I appreciate the breathtaking quality of this band's music. Right now it is a strange thing to listen to it, knowing that Richard is not with us any more. But the music lives on, and Richard is with us in spirit for new generations of Pink Floyd fans. Right now I'm listening to the guitar solo on "Money", with Richard's magnificent keyboard pitching in. It is pure magic. I wish you were here, Richard. Know that you touched millions of people like me.

This is definitly a sad day! I was hoping that after seeing all the original members of Pink Floyd (on t.v.)perform in England for the G8
Summit show, that just maybe they got beyond all their differences and would produce music, again, together.
A "Farewell" tour to Richard would be such a tribute and as a fan, an honor to attend and witness. Pink FLoyd is the best band there ever was and will be.

I'm the ultimate Pink Floyd fan and it's a sad day to hear of the passing of a member of the greatest live band ever. My first concert I ever saw was The Dark Side of the Moon tour and I thought I was in heaven. I always say to people that seeing a Pink Floyd concert is like you went to heaven and back. Richard will be missed I wish that the rest of the group could get together and go out on the road for a farewell tour and make Richard smile down on them. They should reunite and show people that they are the greatest live band ever for themselves, there music and most of all, us fans that would love to see a final Eclipse of Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd was a band about music and they should go out and play to the world that is waiting to hear it. Richard Wright you will always be remembered by fans all over the world. God Bless

I've been listening to my Pink Floyd cds at work today and in remembering Richard Wright, it's occurred to me that THE DIVISION BELL (1994) is a very sad (still excellent!) album. If I were to completely lose myself in it right now, I would definately get all choked up.

Hayley Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

So sad. Thank you for the music, Rick. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Srdj Brown Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Goodbye, Rick, and thank you for the fantastic music I've been listening to for nearly thirty years. You shall never be forgotten. It will be incredibly sad watching you play on the upcoming Gilmour CD/DVD but I shall rejoice in your musicanship. Thank you for making this Floydian happy throughout the years. You shall always shine on.

Who the hell would take the time to read this? If youre going to blog condense your atricles, the attention span of an average adult is roughly 2 min.

I wonder if it ever really sunk in Richard's mind, the breadth, and the depth of his mark on this world? Pink Floyd is in ways, so unlike any other band. I don't know if any musical artists in the last century have made such a profound connection with the listener. For many, DSOTM is not just an album, it's a state of mind (pardon the apt cliche). There is a specific set of values, as well as a common empathy that speaks to all people, housed within the work these men created. that work in particular is the most timeless piece of music I think we've seen in the last century. Richard's stamp on human history will live on for as long as we love music.

Rest in peace, Richard...

This was a shocker, and a sad one.

Floyd has been a constant sonic refuge in my life since 1978 (when I was 12) and not a week goes by where I don't at least pick up one of their albums to escape with, if only for a little while.

Obscured By Clouds, Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals (my favorite), The Wall and The Final Cut are always just a mouse click away from me at all times, and thank goodness.

Thank you Richard for all of your amazing talent and artistic boldness. You will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

This looks like the only place I can post my grief at Richard Wright's death. What a loss to us all. Behind all that glamour guitar and stellar drum work was Richard's intellegent and often touching piano and synthesiser work. I'm listening to Animals as I write. This man made the sound complete and often seemed the most sensitive of the crew,no wonder he gave Waters the finger.Good.I could ramble on as to the impact of his music, but as a consumer, the passing away of the legend that Richard was will stay with me for some time. "You came, you changed things,in most cases everything and nothing will be the same without you" thanks, Dirk.

That was a beautiful tribute, Adrienne!

It was meant to be a holiday
Building castles by the sea
Another way to live for you and me
Time to pause, consider what we've done
The wind is blowing, so come,
Let's take a holiday

How was I to know quite so soon
That dreams can turn a life,
Around it seems
There is no single way to live our days
Between these lines I know you see a man
Who's not quite sure who he is
Or where he stands

Sail on
Sail on, across the sea
Ride the waves, feel the breeze
Sail on
There's no other way I'd rather be

Destiny, reality are just a dream
Raise the sails, the wind is free
Every day I become more confused
Which way to go, how to choose

Back at home, what holds me here
Shut in not moving, only half a life
Clouds hang heavy, they leave me cold
It doesn't have to be this way
The wind is blowing, so come,
Let's take a holiday

Sail on
Sail on, across the sea
Ride the waves, feel the breeze
Sail on
There's no other way I'd rather be

-Richard Wright

I am not going to say what I did to Pink Floyd's music... Let's just say I had a good time. All my memories growing up revolve around "The Floyd", especially the slowly fading in of the keyboard on Wish You Were Here. My favourite album of all, and today a sad reminder of what is lost. Thank you, Richard.

mexican pink floyd Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

When pink floyd is mentioned for any reason or cause ,Richard Wright without question comes to mind along with each of the other original members. To not have a picture including Roger Waters is an insult to true PF fans. There is no such thing as PF without associating a PF band member to each other.THANX RICHARD WRIGHT.

Paul Appleyard Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation
Is the English way
The time has come
This song is over
Thought I'd something else to say....

You'll be very much missed Rick...

macy saenz Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

For the sake of Richard and all floydians please, remaining members put all your differences aside and let Richard Wight rest Comfortably Numb by getting together to pay tribute.Pleeeaaasse

mario montoya Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

I just wanted to add that for respect and honor to Richard Wright and as a floydian myself.I pray that the remaining Pink Floyd band members unite to pay tribute to him ,who had so much influence on so many people around the world and a key ingredient for the band itself.

clark williams Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

richard wright quitely saw pink floyd through some difficult times. like charlie watts of the rolling stones he stayed out of the public frays within the band and just kept on contributing some great music. i am surely grateful that we have pulse on dvd. and to the "modern" music crowd; yes you actually have to sit down and listen to groups like pink floyd. it is not a song and dance routine with a DRUM machine. the thumpa thumpa groups will be in the dust bin of music history while groups such as pink floyd will continue to inspire listeners and musicians.

legga Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

first i must say IAMOSM YOU ARE A BLOODY LOOSER I THINK YOU MUST BE A TEENAGER WHO LISTENS TO THE CRAP MUSIC OF TODAY AND WOULNT KNOW GOOD MUSIC IF IT HIT YOU IN THE FACE, i agree with David Rhoads you can only wish you will be missed as much as Richard is. Ive been a fan for 23 years ever since i first heard DSOTM at the age of 10 i have every album made by PF and the solo albums made by the other members, i have not worn a PF shirt for a month and this morning before hearing the sad news of his death i put one on, now i know why i put it on, sounds weird hey.
Im always asked which is my fav PF album but i can not choose cause they are all great, i have not had the pleasure of seeing them live which is a shame as now it will never happen until i get to go and see the GREAT GIG IN THE SKY.
may the music live in our hearts ECHOES in our minds forever.
Richard we all WISH YOU WERE HERE still among us, my you SHINE ON forever

I have been a Floyd fan for as long as I can remember. I was fortunate to see David Gilmour and Rick Wright at Radio City for the "On an Island" tour....Having never seen the Floyd before, it was the greatest show i've ever seen....I was lucky to obtain an audio copy....So much for a FLOYD Reunion.....Very sad indeed..

BobbyC Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

I don't know if there is a song that can elicit a tear like Great Gig in the Sky. So I played that song last night and shed a tear, for Richard, and his family and friends.

mario montoya Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

Never again will A band like Pink Floyd come around. It is a great loss and a painful reality when a member of your favorite band has gone especially when you uderstand and relate to what they stood for and expressed in their music. Across the black and white effortlessly magic fingers slide. Thank you for those awesome years,R.I.P Richard Wright.................................

Eric Friedmann Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

You know, it's absolutely amazing and refreshing to see so many fan tributes for Richard Wright and Pink Floyd posted on a web site that primarily dedicates itself to the likes of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Justin Tiberlake and reality TV shows. I guarantee you, you'll never see this kind of heart-felt emotion when someone like Britney Spears kicks the bucket (which probably won't be too long from now, given the way that crazy skank lives her life!).

Jonathan Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

I was fortunate enough to catch the final perfromance of "The Wall" in the U.S. in 1980, and saw Richard several times since, including their reunion @ "Live-8" in 2005. As a keyboard player myself, he was a huge influence on me directly.... Richard, Shine on at that Great Gig in the Sky.

Robert Hilstrom Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

I first remember hearing Pink Floyd when I was in 7th grade and "The Wall Part II" became our anthem. My brother bought the album and we soon started to wear it out, exp Young Lust, Hey You, and Comfortably Numb. Then it was my turn and I went way back and bought "A Nice Pair" (their first two albums) and what a difference. My friend and I were acting crazy when we heard the duck calls and all. I thought all of this was cool but did not know what I was in for when I caught the BBC playing a concert of theirs from around 1970 and heard "Echoes". I became a Floydian after hearing Rick's swirling Hammond and synth sounds along with Dave's delayed guitar. I knew this was what I was looking for! I started to learn Rick's keyboard parts and Dave's guitar parts and would also play drums to the records. I do not see how Floyd could have been possible without Rick, his playing was very different from others at the time (Keith Emerson in Floyd, forget it). Now the gig is in the sky. Shine On.

Ice Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

What can I say about Richard Wright and the influence that he, and Pink Floyd have had on my life? "See Emily Play" was the first 45 I owned. My very first LP was "Piper At The Gates of Dawn". While my parents were paying for me to learn Bach, my practise time was spent on the songbook for "Dark Side of The Moon"?

Pink Floyd's music has marked so many milestones in my life. I heard the US radio premier of "Dark Side of the Moon", and have seen every tour, USA and UK. I am an "original" fan of these masters of music.

I am glad that Richard is out of pain, but I grieve for David, Roger and Nick. I also grieve for us, for a loss that cannot be regained.

Yet, I can hear "Signs of Life", as in my mind's eye I see Syd, young and healthy, waving happily as the boat approaches that Farther Shore. And, as his feet touch land, the tired soul that fought bravely for so long is once more renewed, at the tolling of the Island bell. Shine on, Richard. We shall see you again, by and by.

Francis Attard Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

The loss of a member of a band like the great Pink Floyd isn't easy to forget, and Richard Wright's isn't an exception.
How can anyone forget whoever contributed to the fantastic music, which many times helped each and everyone of us to forget, even if for a brief time, the problems we faced during our daily life.
Dear Richard, you may rest in peace because your music will surely continue to be of such a help forever.
May the lord have mercy on
your soul.

Nelson Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond

Nikki Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:19 AM EST

So sad to hear this... Rest in Peace Richard. You will never be forgotten!

I think it may be time for a Pink Floyd tattoo in honor of Mr. Wright. I've been wanting another for some time now, but I didn't know what to get. It all seems clear now though. Very clear.
