'Project Runway' finale (+ spoilers)!

Categories: 'Project Runway', Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion

Projectrunwayfinale_l Sure, the fifth season of the Bravo 24-hour fashion show hasn't exactly been a fan favorite, but you wouldn't know that from the crowd -- 900 strong -- elbowing to get into the tent at Bryant Park for the taping of the finale this morning. (And we're talking 8:30-in-the-morning morning.) It was a fabulous mix of fashion elite, the Bravo Alumni Club (we counted contestants from every Runway past, Rachel Zoe, that Make Me a Supermodel cutie, and so many others) and a few random celebs to light up the front row (hellooo, Michelle Trachtenberg and, uh, Judith Light!).

Once the air kisses subsided, Runway’s own glamazon Heidi Klum took the stage to welcome the crowds, and bade a seemingly reluctant auf Wiedersehen to Bravo and the Magical Elves. She also announced the one surprise of the morning -- all the whispers that Jennifer Lopez would be filling Victoria Posh Beckham’s size 00 sheath as the guest judge at the finale were true...until they weren’t. After a mysterious foot injury (perhaps somewhere between the Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta shows she attended earlier this week?) La Lopez had canceled, leaving Tim Gunn to join the judging panel. For the First. Time. Ever.

After last week’s surprise ankling (that one’s for you, J.Lo!) of two contestants, all six remaining designers showed collections. But it wasn’t too hard to figure out who were the red herrings and who would be joining Jay McCarroll and Christian Siriano (both of whom were in attendance this morning) in the Runway hall of fame. But since it’s possible our crystal ball is a little fogged over this morning, check out the best and worst looks from each designer after the jump, and let us know who you think will be in and who will be out.

[In case that wasn't clear, there will be spoilers galore after the jump. So please don't yell at me when you click below and see spoilers. No, really.]

Now let’s start the show!

Jarrellrunway_l Jerell deserves his own cell in couture jail for his sequin-on-sequin crimes of fashion. Sequined jackets over sequined pants? Maybe for Michael Jackson's comeback tour. But he did have some lovely silhouettes, and his embroidery work was beautiful and intricate and the kind of thing that as the occasional accent would be stunning. Get this guy an editor and then we're talking!

Suaerunway_l Suede introduced his show saying he drew his inspiration from the Bluefly.com challenge. But after seeing his collection, I don't know that the chic-on-the-cheap website will be returning the love. It was candied pinks and blues and the kind of rustly shine that's better suited to Barbie's Dreamhouse than Bryant Park.

Joerunway_l Joe pronounced his collection to be all about "Americana." Meanwhile, I saw a lot of laces and leath-ah. (Any chance former workroom-mate Stella rubbed off on Ol' Joe?) The jeans were quite nice, actually, but has there ever been such a large collection of bustiers outside of a Nashville saloon? (Or maybe even inside of one?)

Kenslyrunway_l Kenley created what she called "her dream wardrobe," so while that, naturally, meant loads of puffed sleeves, bubble hems, and too adorable dresses, I loved it. Her tailoring was superb and her liberal use of color was fresh and fun. I know some people (cough, Tim Stack) found her ubiquitous headpieces as annoying as her inappropriate runway laughter, but I found myself hoping that one will come standard with every Kenley original that will be sold at the Kenley-only dresses store at which I will be customer No. 1.

Kortorunway_l_2 Korto, who's displayed a great design aesthetic all season, ever so slightly underwhelmed. (Don't hate me!) Yes, her designs were lovely and some of them great, but all solids and no prints makes for a slightly forgettable show, no? I wish she borrowed a little from the patterned, pailletted dress she herself wore to say her hellos to the crowd. So: Elegant shapes, tropical colors, love the random crossing-guard strap across the open-back motif, but she (and her too cute daughter) aren't taking home top honors.

Leanerunway_l_2 Because that, my friends, hands down goes to...Leanne. Anyone who's been watching since the first episode knows that this stealth designer has been working on an entirely different level from the rest of the PR gang. In fact, the Leannimal received the one burst of spontaneous applause this morning when her first look floated down the runway. Her drop-dead-gorgeous sea bisque color palette, her exquisite knife-sharp pleats in what appeared to be the softest silks...J'adore, tu adores, nous adorons.

So, if you ask me, it was girls' night this morning all the way. But hey, what do I know? Do you think Suede-licious will be taking home the Saturn hybrid? Was Terri (who made for great company on our way into the tent -- thanks for the tee, T!) robbed? Let's hear it!

I don't feel like anyone was robbed. When it came down to it Leann's designs she shocked a lot of people. She is such the demure type you would not expect such elegant pieces, but she showed and proved.

Leanne was absoutely boring. Kenley did the same thing everytime. Korto was amazing. She was robbed, she was almost always in the top.

susan addison Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

I, like many of the viewers was surprised tha Korto did not win the challenge. It was stated that Korto final designs were all solids and no prints; isn't that the way Leanne designs were. Both had great designs, but think outside the box. More women of various sizes could actually wear Korto's designs than Leanne's designs.
Could it be possible one day to let the viewing audience judge the show and the judges continue to give the constructive advice to steer them in the right direction...... just my opinion!

Theresa Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

I'm sorry 2 say that Korto was robbed last night! Her collection in my eyes was great. Leanna collection was good but it was the same over and over again. i was so sick of the waves! i thought i was going 2 be sea sick! Korto will always be the winner in my eyes!!!! GO KORTO

jaay Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

i cant believe leanne won..
i was rooting for kenley

Terry Karcich Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

Most of the designers were great this year. I must admit that Leanne and Korto were my favorites although some of Jerrell's designs were gorgeous. In any case, they all deserve credit for being so creative and intense.

Julie Poster Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

Love love love Kenley--personality and dresses. Love love love Leanne's talent. Hate hate hate Leanne, Korto and Jerell's mouths and total meanness about Kenley. Silent treatment? Grow up and act 18 please.

Nasty comments behind her back. Geez. Cruel people. Bad season. Would love to see some humanity and bonding next season. Hope to see more fashion spreads of Kenley's beautiful dresses.

lili Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

They should have auf'ed Kenley a long time ago for her nasty attitude. Her designs weren't that good, she only won 1 challenge! The producers only kept her on because of ratings, since she was the one stirring the pot in the show. This season was rather dull compared to previous seasons. The ratings were not very good...i.e.. Not many viewers.
Leeane deserves to win.

Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I was underwhelmed by Korto's collection too. I loved the color palette, but the fabric choices were odd and heavy. And there's almost too much going on...pleats, beads, fans, big buns...they all compete rather than hang together. Leanne's collection seemed to fit together seemlessly, yet each piece is great on it's own. Kenley had some adorable dresses, but I can't get past her awful mememeee persona to care.

jim Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Leanne's collection is the first collection from Project Runway that I'd actually call wearable art. (And this is from a huge and forever Jay fan.) It's so sculptural and ethereal, and yet seems totally accessible. Also, Leanne is adorable! Score one for the art nerds.

Alana Marie Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I really liked Kenley. Her dresses are drop dead beautiful. Plus, if it weren't for her, Keith would not have one the Lipstick Jungle challenge. She edited his design and made it work. Leanne in the same challenge, basically sabotaged Blayne. And she definitely tried to sabotage Kenley's hip hop design. B*tch. Jerell was the only other contestant that IMO did not try to sabotage anyone, except he did not offer any realistic advise to Kenley's hip hop failure. What you see is what you get with Kenley. The other designers are backstabbers.

Christiane Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

Well, I think Korto should win. She has been very consistent. And she deserves it.
Kinley, that b*tch shoulda gone home a long time ago just for her mouth! She is extremely disrespectful to all the judges, and Tim. She cannot take any criticism, and that challenge when the old ppl came back, that purple thing was so ugly!!! She is ugly on the inside and out, and so are her designs.

Leanne has beautiful work, and she didi win 3 challenges... hmmm for me Leanne is pretty good, but as it has been said, she uses a lot of the same colors. If she wins, it would be good, but I really Want Korto to win.

And to the person who said Leanne won cuz she was on the left6 and Heidi looked there, Heidi always does that! In so many challenges, where Korto almost won, she would look at her first but then she would say another person. She always looks at someone who is in the top, but then announced someone else as the winner! So THERE! mwahahahahahahaaaa

Sharon Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

I read the spoiler before when it was posted. I have a pretty good idea that person is the winner. Besides, if you look at the preview for this weeks show, Heidi is looking to the left when she announces the winner. That same prson is on the left.

Tracy Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:54 AM EST

It seems Leanne will win for being the most couture, but ho hum! The collection was boring... same colors, same layers, same aesthetic several times on different model. Only one dress really stood out. I don't think she won; I just think everyone else lost. Snoooze!

Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 01:28 AM EST

Kenley, to me, is the underdog. If you ask me, I feel that the other designers acted petty in more ways than Kenley. There is a lot to like about Kenley. She believes in her designs. I think she has had to fight her way up in life and her defensiveness is just a part of that. I find her "attitude" refreshing compared to the backstabbing, falsely demure designers who'd just as soon slice the opponents open with a seam ripper and the brashness toward her by the other contestants. Kenley is herself and the others are pretenders.

Mary Baker Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 02:50 AM EST

Terri wasn't robbed. I seldom cared for anything she made, and her behavior was horrible. I've always believed Santino was a ringer, there for entertainment value. Terri wasn't entertaining, she was just mean. Kenley is too, but she has the talent to make up for it. I liked several of Jerell's looks on the show; I hope he was the third finalist instead of Kenley because... I can't stand her.

Nona Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:52 PM EST

Terri definitely was robbed of a spot at Bryant Park. Her last outfit was tacky, but not a train wreck. She probably would have done loads better than Suede and Joe.

spoiler Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

Wikipedia has removed the winner and loser for the next two challanges from the PR5 page, but it was there as stated earlier... we'll just have to watch to see how accurtate it was. They also removed the declaration of a winner stating on the discussion page it was pure speculation.

Becky Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Did anyone notice that Joe and Leeanne have switched models????

Spoiler Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Spoiler below!!! Dont read if you dont want to know!!!
I was just checking things out on Wikipedia.org and they list the winners/losers for the next two episodes and declare a winner...
According to them Korto wins this week and Joe is out... the next week Kenley wins and Suede is out. They dont show who loses the final nature themed challenge, but do post that Leanne is voted the winner of the whole season.

ToryWatcher Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

Leanne's collection is beautiful but everything has the same theme, pleats. I also noticed that many of the designs she used had already been shown on the show. For example, she used the white shorts for the Olympic challenge.
I think Korto's collection was the most complete and her designs were just as beautiful as Leanne's. Her collection included everything, even jewelry.
With that said I think either Leanne or Korto will win this year.

Joe Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:18 AM EST

Yes! Terri was robbed! She went all crazy last week, but her designs all season have been gorgeous. And that girl works fast!! She should have shown before Suede.

Melissa A Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

Come on, how could it not be Leanne?

starchild Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Another thing - they really need to ask themselves how somebody like Suede can get to the final six when - Terri, Daniel and Kelli were so much better designers. His designs were amateurish. It makes the show look bad. EVERYONE'S show should be professional. Funny, as I wrote the above designers' names, I notice that they all had major attitude. I also noticed in the show where they were kicked out, there were other designers who were worse and who had a history of designing bad clothing.

starchild Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Bravo seems to think it's a big deal who wins the winner but for me, it's seeing the show. I don't know what they did the first two years but it was a much more enjoyable experience seeing shows that I hadn't seen on the internet. Now we have to go through weeks of shows to see something we know how it's going to conclude. They really need to think this out. There's no way to time the beginning of the show so we can pretty much have the finale show the same week (or day) as the finale? THAT would be special.

duranmom Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

I believe six designers "had" to show as to not give up the final three. It's happened before but is never aired (ie: her name just fell out of my head, but the year Chole won the gal who came in 4th showed at BP anyway as to not give away the final three...Kara?). Top three had to be Leanne, Kenley, and Korto. No idea who wins, especially with Tim in the mix (that's not right-couldn't they have plucked a celeb out of the audience?) he knows them too well.

jen Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

why are there six designers showing? seems like the number to get to bryant park goes up every season. the more contestants they allow to show, the less exclusive it is! and can i say i hate this season? i've loved PR for years, but this season has just been ridiculous.

Elizabeth Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Normally, I am quite a fan of PR (it's some kind of weird fascination of fraudualent-reality inter-sected with diva-esque snappiness that draws me in!); however, this year it is rather a dud. That being said, I think that no one's collection is worth consideration, for artistic merit or otherwise. The personalities of the contestants weren't even any fun!

jenn Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

wooho for Leanne.. she the best of all them,, no one thought tht she has any talent ..i liked kenely when the show frst strted but lately shes been so full of herself.Leanne wins hands down

TO: True Tenor Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

I agree- Some have white gowns, or gowns, that don't seem to fit in with the rest of their collection. It could be coincidence but who knows

Roz Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

I think this challenge will be between
the ladies this year. Leanne, Korto and Kenley are wonderful designers, but I think Leanne's designs are a bit more creative. Good Luck to them all !!!

melmac Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

I think it's going to be close between Korto and Leanne, and don't know who will win.

Kenley has a gorgeous collection, but her attitude could hurt her in the end.

Joe's is neat and fits "Americana" but I don't think he's one of the finalists.

The least said about Jerrell's and Suede's collection the better. That said, I do like a couple of Jerrell's pieces from earlier in the season (car parts and zodiac).

True Tenor Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

Does anyone else think that there is a wedding dress element to the challenge?

MsDaisy Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Bravo has pics from each collection. Korto has one print halter dress that is quite pretty. Maybe Meeta's issue with Korto's solids vs Leanne's solids is that Korto did all one color solids while Leanne mixed 2 solid colors??? I dunno. I did prefer Leanne's collection-her pieces just looked better constructed than Korto's. And Leanne's looked more like a real collection. Kenley had a couple of pretty dresses and some butt-ugly dresses too, and it was not a cohesive collection.

LaT Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Thanks for the overall rundown, but I admit that you've left me scratching my head with the following critique of Korto:

"but all solids and no prints makes for a slightly forgettable show, no?"

When you then go on to lavish praise on Leanne, whose collection, while absolutely gorgeous, was pretty much ... all solids and no prints. I absolutely understand if Leanne's silhouettes, tailoring and garment structure was more your speed than Korto's (and I'll admit that I'd also give Leanne's collection the overall edge, even though I do also love Korto's), but I think it's inconsistent to dismiss Korto's use of only solids and no prints when Leanne did the same thing (and, frankly, when Korto's color palette was the more daring and vivid of the two).

Belle Book Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

I saw the collections. It sure doesn't look like Suede and Jerrell are the ones going to Bryant Park. I doubt Joe is either, although he was the best of the guys (and that's saying something)! I liked Kenley's collection but since it only had dresses and one skirt, I don't think it was versatile enough. Korto's was more versatile and I think it'll beat Kenley's collection (sorry, Meeta). But I agree -- Leanne will be taking home the top prize. Congratulations, Leanne!

Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

has the finale already aired? or when will it?

yaya Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 07:19 AM EST

Who would have thunk that Leanne, so quiet and reserved, would be among the finalists. Just goes to show that talent will win out in the end. I like Kenley and Korto, too although Kenley can be unnerving and Korto expresses little emotion. Three great designers.

Sarah Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 07:12 AM EST

Go Leanne! She has the personality and the talent of a great designer. Kenley is a good designer, but needs to learn how to take criticism and stop acting like a petulant child. Korto has a lot of potential, and will go far. My favorite male designer is Joe, and I think he'll go far as well. Terri had talent, but that woman was mean! I'm glad she didn't go to Bryant Park!

Kai Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST

I agree with Thad. Terri has been awesome throughout the competition except for the last challenger where as suede has been middling at best (except for the first one). Terri would have put on a much stronger show than Suede!

True Tenor Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 12:34 AM EST

Did anyone else notice that every designer had a long white-ish dress and two of them (Joe and Kenley) included veils...which leads me to believe that they had to all include a wedding dress look in their collection.

mathew Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

Leanne's collection was beautiful, original elegant, perfect.

MsDaisy Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

Leanne's collection was fabulous. I'd buy everything if I was young enough (and skinny enough). And Joe - would you let your daughters wear any of your collection? No, I didn't think so.

thad Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

Suede is horrible and should have volunteered to go when Terri was dumped for her attitude instead of her outfit. When guys have attitude they are Santino, if women balk, they are eliminated. Tisk tisk judges.

mangagirl Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

URGHHH!!! I tripped upon this by mistake....MY EYES!!!

dan Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

Terri deserved to be kicked off. Anyone that rude does not deserve to be on the show. I am glad the judges are finally recognizing that some contestants are ignoring the challenges and booting them. Terri can not obviously work as a team.

Rita Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

leanne should win hands down she makes gorgeous designs!!!!! thanks so much for the info & pictures

Kai- Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

It looks like it will be the ladies all the way to the finale. All three looked fantastic!

Jaded1 Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

E online has pics of Leanne's, Korto's and Kenly's collections. All wonderful, but Leanne's takes your breathe away! I was in awe! And I could have cared less about her before seeing the collection. dreamy!

anna Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

Wouldn't it be awesome to have a top three girls? Leanne, Korto and Kenley (though I find the latter to be annoying)?

Leanne's collection is stunning!
