PopWatch Previewer: 'Milk,' 'Ghost Town,' and 'Passengers'

Sep 4, 2008, 07:09 PM | by Adam Markovitz

Categories: PopWatch Previewer

Sure, choosing the next leader of the free world is important. But choosing your next trip to the multiplex? Now that's a decision that deserves some thought. Take a look at this crop of candidates, then let us know who you'll vote for when the time comes.

MILK
November 26

Plot: The true story of Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), who became the first openly gay public official in 1977 when he was elected to San Francisco’s board of city supervisors.

Looks like: Mr. Smith Goes to San Francisco

Verdict: The season’s first wow-inducing trailer boasts a powerhouse performance by Penn that could make Milk an award-show staple. One complaint: Where’s the steamy Franco-Penn canoodling we’ve heard so much about?

GHOST TOWN
September 19

Plot: After dying for seven minutes, a curmudgeon (Ricky Gervais) develops the ability to see ghosts.

Looks like: The Sixth Sense, rewritten by James L. Brooks.

Verdict: An old set-up (remember Heart and Souls? How about The Frighteners?) meets a new comic talent in Gervais, who seems to be in top form for his first starring role. Also, welcome back Téa Leoni! We missed you.

PASSENGERS
October 24

Plot: A grief counselor (Anne Hathaway) discovers that a plane crash survivor (Patrick Wilson) may have psychic abilities.

Looks like: A thriller in search of a plot.

Verdict: Hathaway and Wilson are no lightweights, but it’ll take some major dramatic muscle to ground a story this hokey.

Your turn, PopWatchers: Will Passengers drive you to the multiplex? Does the Milk trailer do a body good? And will Ghost Town make a killing at the box office?

when I first saw one of the Milk trailers it seemed like they were trying to make it seem like it was a lot more funny than it is. It's not a dramedy--that was weird. But learning that Harvey is such a great guy will make it that much harder to watch when bad things start to happen.
Passengers: I thought that looked really interesting, but I'll probably watch it at home.
Ghost Town: I just don't believe that Tea Leoni and Ricky Gervais would ever hookup, so it's hard to process. But he cracks me up. I'm watching the first season of Extras as we speak.

Milk looks amazing. Can't wait.

CAB Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Milk looks fantastic, I teared up a bit during the trailer.

Ghost Town looks funny here, but I watched the clip you have posted elsewhere, and it is freaking hysterical! My co-workers are looking at me oddly because I was laughing so hard, and it is not even Ricky G's character. I have high hopes.

bootsycolumbia Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

I agree with Ceballos. Anne Hathaway looks too young for that role, and the movie doesn't look all that great. I love Ricky Gervais and Tea Leoni, and Ghost Town looks like it might be charming. But I have to go with Milk. Sean Penn has been really overacting in his most recent movies, but he looks really good in this one. Plus, I think this might be Josh Brolin's breakout role--the one that gets him an Oscar nomination. So yeah, I'll probably go see Milk.

Something about seeing Anne Hathaway referred to as "doctor" made me laugh so I guess that's a bad sign. "Milk" looks amazing but an actual gay person in the cast would have had me lining up right now.

Ceballos Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

Adam hit it right on - "Milk" is the first real "wow-inducing" trailer of the fall season. I've been pretty iffy on most of this fall's movies, but I can always be swayed by a great trailer, and "Milk" delivered.

"Ghost Town" looks like it could be a cute date movie and, while I LOVE Anne Hathaway (and Patrick Wilson), she looks like she's WAY too young for that role and "Passengers" looks like it'll fall too much on the cheesy side (unintentionally) and not enough on the scary side.

paige Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

that milk trailer is so well put together... oscar bait or not- i am so there!

Martha Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

"Milk" looks good but also a bit like obvious Oscar bait. "Ghost Town" looks charming and funny...but I could be biased, given that I love Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear and lines like "whingeing zombies."

Kisha Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST

I really like the "Milk" trailer . I know nothing about Harvey Milk but this trailer has peaked my intrest .I am somewhat intrested in "Passengers" because Anne Hathaway and patrick Wilson are two of my favorite actors . But something in the trailer screams predictible . I may see it . "Ghost Town" is something that looks like I can wait for DVD for.

Kirsten Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

The ubiquitous "Ghost Town" trailer has ceased to be funny for me- it'll take some REALLY good reviews to get me there. "Milk" looks fantastic, and I agree that the trailer is extremely well put together. I really want "Passengers" to be good, but it seems like lots of predictable casting and it will probably not be, unfortunately.

Raven_Moon Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:32 PM EST

"Milk" & "Ghost Town" look pretty good. I'm not sure about "Passengers." I might wait for some reviews. It sort of looks like a rental or wait until it's on HBO kind of movie.

Al Fredo Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

It looks like Penn has Harvey Milk down pretty well. Of the three I would opt for Milk.

Snarf Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

My money's on "Milk".

BrandonK Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

Wow, I'm actually going to see a Sean Penn movie! The last one I saw was "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
