Letterman vs. McCain, Round 2

Sep 26, 2008, 05:21 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Celebrity Feuds, Current Affairs, Paris Hilton, Politics as Entertainment, Television

Davidlettermanparis_l You'd think the David Letterman-John McCain mini-feud would have blown over after a day, with both sides having better things to do (McCain had an economy to fix, Dave had to interview Paris Hilton), but on Thursday, neither side was shutting up about it. On the candidate's side, his spokesperson Nicolle Wallace went on NBC's Today and claimed the senator had bowed out of the Late Show at the last minute because he "felt this wasn't a night for comedy." Which was not the false excuse McCain had given Letterman. He'd told Dave he needed to fly to Washington right away to help solve the economic crisis, but he actually remained in New York until the next day and had been getting his face made up for an interview with Katie Couric during the Letterman taping he'd skipped, as Dave revealed via live feed. For his part, Letterman continued zinging McCain for weaseling out on him on a way that seemed inconsistent with his straight-talking war hero reputation. (Watch the meat of Letterman's mean but funny diatribe here.) Dave even brought up McCain's snub in passing during his chat with Hilton, who mentioned having been dissed by McCain herself.

Meanwhile, the fallout continued. Reaction was apparently mixed at CBS; Letterman employee Craig Ferguson backed his boss in this Late Late Show monologue, while CBS News staffers were reportedly livid that Letterman had embarrassed McCain (and, by proxy, Couric) by hijacking their feed. More than one pundit has suggested (here and here, for instance) that Dave's continued lampooning of McCain could have a real-world political effect; not that Dave's rants will persuade voters to pull the lever for Obama, but they could make voters see McCain in a less flattering light. A more cynical view suggests that Letterman will keep milking this feud for as long as he can, as he did his one-sided feud with Oprah, culminating in an eventual conciliatory visit from the senator which Letterman and CBS will hype for ratings, after which all will be forgiven, and Dave will go back to making jokes about George W. Bush's stupidity and Bill Clinton's libido (still comedy gold, even all these years later).

What do you think, PW-ers? Will Letterman's continued pounding have an effect on potential McCain voters? Is he just drawing this disagreement out for ratings' sake, or does he have a valid complaint? And if it is valid, has Dave gone from legitimately aggrieved to merely petty and petulant, or is his lampooning of the candidate still funny?

Letterman lost all credence when Brother August, his Catholic teacher,
did bad things to Dave.
This is why Dave is so heterophobic.

David Letterman is no longer funny. His attacks on McCain (especially on the age issue), Pallin, and Hillary Clinton only demonstrate that he is willing to demean women and older Americans. Why doesn't he treat Obama in the same manner? Is he afraid of him? Is Obama that perfect? As an entertainer, he should treat all candidates the same. We don't need celebrities to force their opinions on us. They are supposed to entertain (something Letterman has been failing at), not beat up on certain political candidates. Yesterday I read an article which told how many jokes were made by Letterman and Leno
at the expense of McCain and Pallin as compared to a mere mention of Obama. What a shame!!! Not that he cares, but he has lost another fan.

Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

Obama can't be open about his citizenship AND is actively being sued. Here is the Penn docket: http://dockets.justia.com/docket/court-paedce/case_no-2:2008cv04083/case_id-281573/

Richard Campbell Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

The country has enough political pundits attempting to ask relevant political questions. This guy who intends to vote for Obama thinks Letterman should stick to his core competency, which is humor. I thought the tone set by Mr. Letterman was unseemly. I watched a few minutes and was so repulsed I turned it off. Too self-important for me.

Chuck Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

It's awesome that it takes a man like Dave to confront McCain on honest to goodness dishonesty and lying. His excuses were "I screwed up"..."lots of word are said". Which (if you need a translation) means "I lied so look at how honest I can be about being dishonest". Then "lots of lies are said in a campaign!"... It's insulting to americans for him to lie so bald face.

Charlie Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

McCain should reschedule and show up at the Leno show.

Dave Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

I have to admit I have always liked watching David Letterman going way back when he jumped on the wall with the velcro suit, but in the past few weeks he has changed my opinion permanently. The "great moments in presidential speeches" never bothered me (I thought it was one of the funniest skits on the show) but his past comments and his nastiness veiled by "humor" is not funny to me. It is amazing in such a short time I see a person I used to like to someone I can not stand watching. If they cancelled his show (which I am sure would not be immediate), it would not bother me. He has lost this once very loyal viewer.

k. smith Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 02:26 AM EST

From now on I will be watching Letterman instead of Leno and everyone I have spoken to feels the same. I hope he keeps on reminding his viewers what kind of man McCain really is. The live feed was not a "mean" prank, it was very informative; One picture is worth a thousand words. David Letterman, keep up the excellent work!

DP Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Uh, Master June, McCain isnt a governor. Do you even know what his policies are if you don't know what he does for a living?

art davidson Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

I donot feel Letterman should be cencered in any way. His right to free speach has been paid for By Men and Women like John McCain. I would not vote for McCain for Dog Catcher. In My opinion Obama is just another Socialist. As always were given no real choise. There is Nothing We can do about that. But I can do something about Dave. I will not buy any products advertised on CBS.

Karen H Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

Dave is no longer funny. He went on for 15 minutes the first night and almost as long the second night. One or two jokes, but going on and on - enough. It looks like Dave's ego was crushed and he is out to get even. Through the whole campaign, Dave has hit Hilary, McCain, Palin - but stays away from Obama - I feel he is afraid to go there. If he is such a comedian, then why no jokes about Obama. I thought Dave was suppose to be an entertainer. He forgets that both parties watch him - we watch to be entertained. There are many entertainers that stay neutral while performing - not Letterman. - I think it is time for Letterman to step down - he is no longer funny - rudeness is not a sustitute for humor.

Marvin Martian Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

Go Dave!

Bad idea for McCain to lie to him. Dave's humor has always tended towards beating a dead horse. This is not going to just "go away".

And honestly, why the heck would McCain not just say "bad time for comedy Dave, sorry, I'll make it up to you?" That's the BS Express for you!

Debbie Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

From a Canadian point of view:

Some Americans' are loosing their mind. How in God's name are they considering to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket? Listen, so many problems are surfacing with the economy, the global FrontPage and you people must understand that whatever happens in American affects all countries in the world. America and Americans is a nation that many people globally grow to admired and respected. Now after BUSH violate the UN and other governing bodies to create a war that weren’t warranted just to complete what his father started (his father had every right for that war) so now the country’s assets is depleted and more people are suffering and living on the street. I can’t believe this is the country that I love and most of my family lived heading downhill. The views on the world front are disastrous. After 8 YEARS OF HARDSHIP BOTH LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONAL you people are thinking of electing another set of baboons? Come on. Hi Dave Letterman we love u.

JohnK Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Who's the idiot,Linda? Letterman's not funny anymore? America's no longer respected because people like Letterman "teach our young ones to bash our leaders." First, Letterman's still funny. Second, America's not respected because people like you helped install a moron like Bush in two terms as president. Third, McCain's not my leader...I'm not an Arizonan nor a Republican. Fourth, "bashing" politicians is OK (sometimes essential) in America. Babe, if anybody's an idiot it's you.

Linda Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Dave, you are not funny anymore. Talk about beating a dead horse. Get over it and move on. It is people like you that America is no longer respected. Teach our young ones to bash our leaders. You are an idiot.

master June Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

If John McCain pick Paris Hilton to be his vice president, all the democrats will switch team. Hey, I will vote for her.

Master June Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

I guess David Letterman is running out of jokes to tell. Give Governor and soon to be the next President of the US McCain a break. He fought for you while you are learning your corny jokes. If he can raise his right hand, I will bet with John that he can knock you out in two rounds. LOL!

to Liar Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

McCain stayed in NYC until the next day, he went to speak at the Clinton global conference and Dave rules, he stood up to McCain and his blatant lie and just like Stephen Colbert's brilliant performance at the Correspondent's Dinner where he stood up to the Bush man and his cronies TO THEIR FACES, Dave's performance spoke volumes and yes, his honesty was truly a patriotic act!. McCain is so desperate, he chose that unqualified Bush wanabe for his vp and now nothing he can do will save his campaign, not even the fundamentalist christian right wing voters he so desperately wanted to appease by picking the cougar to begin with, maverick/schmaverick enough is enough of his circus sideshow! move along and send the ruski spy watcher back to the frozen trundra where he found her.

Bobby Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

We gave Mr Bush eight years and we see exactly what he did with it. The war, not taken care of our troops whenever they come back to the States, most of them are homeless. It will be a devatating situation if we elect McCain because He voted 98% with Bush in everything. We need some one who will not associate with Bush cause we have too much of Bush.

Bobby Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Sara Palin,
We love Sara PAlin and we respect her. It is ggod to have a woman running as vice president, but Not Sara Palin. She can't even keep her children under control, how she's going to keep this big United States under controle.

I would denied my mom if her name was Sara, and the worst thing in life is to have John her running as vice president.

Raven_Moon Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

I think Letterman is great. McCain should not have lied to him.

Independent Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 02:37 AM EST

By the way pecanpii, McCain announced his run for president on the Late show. Maybe Letterman should be on your list. Also, you're in a whole lot of trouble if you're still deciding who to vote for president based on your party affiliation - we see what good that did you!

daliana Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 02:28 AM EST

I disagree with you pecanpii. Letterman has been nothing but objective throughout every interview with McCain in the past. I'm an avid Letterman viewer & I can tell you first-hand that there are very few instances when Letterman has been this upset. It had nothing to do with narcissism, politics or celebrity - McCain stood Letterman up and lied about it. Last I remember, that kind of behavior tends to piss most people off.

Sara Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

I love Dave Letterman, and this coverage just makes me love him even more. He continues to prove how to be funny AND irreverent. The fact that McCain canceled the day of is pretty bad...

kennyb4@bellsouth.net Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

I was looking at the Memphis TN news paper, "The Commercial Appeal" dated Wednesday, Sept 24,2008 (commercialappeal.com),page A1 & continued on A2, has an article reguarding the McCain family deep Mississippi roots. It's my belief that McCain was trying to hide his Mississippi roots when trying to bailout and not go to Ole Miss to debate Obama. And he also stood you up to avoid any questions conerning Mississippi. After reading the article, what do you think?? We want to know more about this?

pecanpii Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Letterman is a narcissist just like Obama and they both belong to the party of as... I mean donkeys.

CBS says Letterman does as he pleases--we conservatives do as we please too when we choose which programs we prefer to watch. He won't be on my list. He joins a host of MSM for their donkey like behavior.

Nicie Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

the problem is, instead of having their own ideas and truth telling conservatives attack the messenger and change the subject. The McCain of 2002 is NOT the McCain we have now, he's totally sold out and Letterman knows it, and he's angry...that makes two of us...

Deb Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

As a non American, I can just give you my slightly less politicized view: That whole segment was one of the funniest things I've seen on Letterman in years. McCain knows he's under media scrutiny, and he should have been up front from the start about his reasons for cancelling the Letterman appearance. You can't blame Dave for milking it for as long as he can. Lighten up, people! And, while I'm at it, McCain's actions on this occasion shouldn't skew your opinion of him. Let his record and policies speak for themselves. If the U.S. lets this kind of amusing kerfuffle influence their elections, let me tell you: you're doing it wrong. Palin's disastrous CBS interview? Now *that's* something you should all sit up and take notice of.

Nicie Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

one more thing, you don't like the media deciding your vote, so when you vote for McCain, its because of the nasty media! when our leaders actually start telling the truth, maybe the media won't be so mean, huh?

wow, logic works wonders...

phil Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

@Fran
I'm sorry you have such high standards in determining who is or isn't a hero. Maybe you should actually learn about what happened to McCain and hopefully you would reconsider your position. Or you could get off your high horse and not let the 'hero' label bother you so much. I'll take the overall character of McCain over a has been gapped tooth hack. It's thinking like yours that drags political discourse to the level of a Yankee fan arguing with a Red Sox fan. Blindly loyal and completely idiotic.

Nicie Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

I concur, Marilyn is an idiot... given this level of intelligence, pretty safe to say she's wrack her brain and decide...McCain is getting her vote!

jeffb Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

tell letterman to get a life. Leno beats him every day.

TheU Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Democrat or Republican, just take a look at the facts. Letterman's not being sued for libel or slander and hasn't been presented with a gag order, so I assume he's telling the truth about McCain lying to him. Letterman is a comedian by profession; so what type of response did you think he'd give about this matter? I'm guessing this whole thing could have been avoided if the truth had been told. Anyone ever hear of the saying "the truth shall set you free"? Now for my opinion and a question to my fellow Americans: If a man will willingly lie about the simplest of matters, what will his stance be on more pressing issues?

Michelle Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

David Letterman is a comedian! If comedians had so much political influence, Pat Robertson would've been our president 4 years ago!

Allan Hunt Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Ricky Stevens Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Fran Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Why the incessant "hero" label? If all who fought in the war are to be called heroes, fine. But being shot down and imprisoned does not make you a hero, it makes you a victim. Heroes have a choice and choose to do what they feel is right no matter how hard it is; and excuse me but they do not beat it to death to market themeselves every chance they get!

Fran Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

I think he should make as much noise as he wants to. There was no reason for McCain to lie to him, my guess is that his campaign came up with the "not a night for comedy" excuse to cover his butt. I mean, he called Letterman personally! This wasn't a case of miscommunication, he LIED. He will say or do anything to further his campaign, and anyone who believed he "suspended" it for evern a minute was not paying attention. He just moved it to DC where it plainly got in the way. Then when he saw that the debate sponsors were going go go on without him after his little grandstand attempt, he changed his mind again but tried to make people believe he was responsible for "progress" that "allowed" him to attend the debate.

He has as many stories as the Arabian Nights, and they are all just as fictional.

Marilyn Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

I was a Hillary Clinton supporter who is undecided and things like this don't help, it just reminds me how badly Hillary was treated by the media because of Obama and now its been happening all over to John MCCain and I don't like the media trying to make up my mind for me. I used to watch letterman all the time it is over not again and if it keeps up I will skip NBC, CBS, and ABC forever and I happen to know a lot of people that feel that way. Thank you

Katherine Mourselas Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

Let Letterman say what he wants. I think he's great, someone else may not. That's the idea of freedom of expression. If you don't like it change the channel.

Europe Calling Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

McCain is tactical and erratic. Obama is Strategic and calm. Letterman is funny. Go Dave. keep your poker hot for who ever is in power and the powerful. that's what comics, critics, journalists should do.... instead we are given "expectations" by the conventional media... ....

Jake Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

McCain 'sounds like a little troll' because of torture.

I won't excuse McCain, but come on, Letterman! You compared McCain not appearing on your show to a president not appearing for work. Get over yourself, man! You aren't being funny anymore.

Jon Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

By the way, you do realize the "one-sided feud" with Oprah was deliberately one-sided, right? THAT WAS THE JOKE. He kept on and on about it and made it into a big deal, even though it wasn't. Dave obviously leans left anyway, so he probably hated McCain before any of this went down. Now this just gives him an excuse to skewer him, and that's a good thing -- because McCain looks and sounds like a little troll and he's comedy gold.

Cyndi Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

Dave is an idiot. He does this for publicity and it gets really really old. Who gives a sh!t why he came or why he didn't come. And to call him a liar? That is not right as you have no clue what really happened. And again WHO CARES!!!!!!

Al Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

McCain is a lying old fool. He shift his position a couple of times each day. However, it is Palin we will be voting for - a 1 in 3 chance of being President according to the life insurance actuarials.

slstevens Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

As funny as Letterman's rant can be at times, he is running the risk of just seeming like a Jr. High girl.

real_vermonter Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

McCain's action was a stunt. Letterman's response was funny because he was pointing out the inconsistencies (for example, McCain could have walked to Washington in the 22 hours it took him to get there after cancelling on Letterman) and does not want to be used as a part of the fallacy. Craig Ferguson's monologue on the subject is, as always, hilarious and accurate.

Patriot Of Reality Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

McCain was grandstanding when he went to Washington, that's all the value he add to this ridiculous bailout plan!

He's a Bushie and Bush wanted his buddy in the Senate there for a photo op! Bush was hoping that Obama wouldn't show up if he was invited to the White House, too!

Letterman is saying what a whole lot of Americans are thinking...why end up in NYC at Katie Couric's when, it was critical that he be in Washington? I'd be upset if McCain disrespected me, too!

McCain doesn't have to worry...Palin is the REAL comedian of the pair! Palin has proved a major point in the game of presidential politics...that the political system can take just a “nobody” and with enough money, public relations, hair & makeup, attitude development, and ability to confuse people...you can create a “tabloid legend” that can be dropped right into the position! I mean, look at this “high-functioning moron” that has had this office for the last 8 years!

It's like watching an old Abbot & Costello movie!

dawn Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 07:11 AM EST

It doesn't matter what Dave says or doesn't say. The Republican Machine that gave us the Bush Horror Show for the past 8 years will make sure we have 4 more years with McCain. They will convince the less intelligent people of this country that he will be the one to save us, and then our country will no longer exist as it once was. 4 more years in a republican regime will kill our already weak country. And those less intelligent people won't know what hit them. It's all about keeping the educational system down so that the greed of the republicans can remain. Listen, we just gave up 700 billion dollars of OUR TAX money. The end of the Bush era goes out with Fireworks. Yeah, let's give it to McCain, and make this country even worse.

Herunar Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 06:43 AM EST

Quite a few people here have tried to find explanations to McCain's disappointing lies. But there isn't one, or McCain's campaign would have offered it already instead of insulting Letterman. What happened was an unnecessary incident caused by unnecessary and transparent lies. I always respected McCain until recently. It has been very disappointing. This incident tells us something about the way McCain runs his campaign - lie, even when you don't have to.

cris in texas Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 06:42 AM EST

this is not new for letterman. this even predates his current gig. anyone remember his long-standing feud with the city of houston and kprc, our local nbc affiliate? it was hilarious.

and another thing.... Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:58 AM EST

do you really think that McCain himself called up David Letterman and cancelled? I would imagine his publicist or scheduler did that.

Liar? Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:53 AM EST

People have no idea what really went down. I thought it was funny of Dave to interupt the Couric feed, but let's be realistic- do you think maybe McCain just bumped up his schedule? Maybe he was already going to do the Couric interview after Dave and moved it up his schedule instead so he could get out of town earlier. It would make sense since they are the same network- and if he was trying to pull a fast one would he do it with the same network?. So all you liberals that are calling him this liar- I hope you are taking into account that Biden has been spouting off lies about a drunk driver killing his first wife. Now THAT is sick. Please consider that at election time since truth matters to you so much.

OOPS - LEFT OUT A WORD IN MY LAST POST

This week, McCain came across as an aging drama queen. His "I'm suspending my campaign" antics were not only unnecessary but a transparent political gambit. Amazingly, most Americans were NOT fooled by his BS. Letterman called McCain out on his behavior and his lies ("I have to run to catch a plane" - please). McCain may have been a war hero, but he comes across these days as a pompous blowhard who has no respect for anyone else. I was once a McCain fan but I am so disappointed in what he has become.

Did a paper on Bill Clinton in college and yes he was impeached but acquitted

Peter Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

Ummm, Terence, you might want to check your facts again. Clinton was impeached. Being impeached is like an indictment. The House impeached him on obstruction of justice, and the Senate acquitted him.

daliana Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

As an undecided voter, stuff like this does matter. I said this in the first round of the Lettermen-McCain feud; it's not about Letterman's comedic diatribe against McCain, it's the point made about Palin's absence in the campaign. Letterman is turning lemons into lemonade by taking McCain's actions & creating funny little quips about the whole thing. The debates, interviews & V.P picks were among the key factors in deciding who I was going to vote for. So far, Palin has only given three interviews since being announced as McCain's VP & doesn't seem trusted enough to carry McCain's campaign. Moreover, the interviews Palin has given have demonstrated a lack of knowledge regarding basic political fundamentals. If you don't agree, read Kathleen Parker's recent article. Parker, who is a conservative journalist, states "Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves.." Questions on Palin's eligibility could be a voters trump card against the McCain campaign.

comans Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

Actually Terence, Pres. Clinton WAS impeached. He wasn't removed from office, but he was indeed impeached. They're different.

And yeah, McCain lied to Letterman; Letterman's a comedian- what do you expect? Letterman laid into him. And it was hilarious and rightfully deserved.

possible US future Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

Classic example of what's in store if McCain is elected. If he needed to appear on Couric ASAP, he should have negotiated with Dave and asked to reschedule. This guy is on the better side of seventy and he still can't say, "I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you. But I can't make it tonight." and has to LIE to resolve a simple problem, that says a lot about the way he's going to deal with problems that are bound to come up if he's elected to office. I hope voter know better...

terence Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

This discussion isn't about Clinton, and for the record he was NOT impeached... Get your facts straight! Yes he lied but also finished his two terms without f*****g everything up. It is none of our business who he sticks his d**k in. McCain is a liar, and the lie was not even worth it. GO OBAMA!

john Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

letterman, not mccain, is a hero and patriot for exposing an unnecessary lie - and viewers and voters deserve truthfulness from politicians especially when attached to an election trying to come to terms over a lying, manipulative president and high-ranking public servants creating the war in iraq thru lies and distortion - LETTERMAN FOR PRESIDENT!

Bob Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Too bad more people don't hold lying politicians accountable for their outright dishonesty. I can't understand how anyone could stand behind Senator McCain in this circumstance, unless you support his lack of integrity.
Give 'em Hell Dave. America still upholds Freedom of Speech as one of the greatest gifts to mankind..... at least until another Republican gets into Office.

Please explain to me why celebrity opinion seems to be the guiding principle of American life (trends in fashion, plastic surgery, exercise, books, diets...), yet when a celebrity expresses a political opinion, he's "just an entertainer"? I also wonder why many dismiss the insights of celebrities despite the fact that these people must be fairly intelligent, talented, charismatic, and hard-working to attain their success. They also travel the world and interact with power figures, which must result in some wisdom and sophistication. Those in support of Obama also seem undeterred by his plan to increase taxes on salaries of more tahn 250,000 a year which I would think affects their wallets more than it does most. Could they be willing to make this sacrifice for the good of the nation? Do people like Letterman have the right to express an opinion? I think so!

McCain is a conniving, old codger for pulling his "I'm suspending my campaign" stunt. It was pure politics and manipulation of the media and American people. So Dave has every right to lampoon him til the cows come home. And Jesus be praised if it causes people to see what a real d*** McCain really is.

shawn Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

If McCain had told the truth about why he wanted to skip the show, then Dave wouldn't have a leg to stand on. As it is, the Straight Talk Express took a detour and got busted. All's fair in love and war veterans...

juju Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

Dave is right.

TraceyC Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

Dave has every right to be angry about this... if McCain had begged off for the reasons he gave Dave - then he shouldn't have been giving an "exclusive" to Katie Couric *in New York* when he claimed he was jetting to Washington - and then staying in NY an additional day campaigning to boot... if he didn't feel it was "appropriate" to appear on Letterman, he could have postponed the appearance or told Letterman the truth about why he wasn't there and postponed... to *lie* and cancel showed no respect for Letterman, who was the first to break the news of his candidacy.

John Mccain was out of line. I haven't been a big fan of Letterman over the years, but between this and the fact that Conan O'Brien is taking over the Tonight Show - I may start watching him again.

No offense to Conan - but I don't think he's *that* funny. Letterman is, and he gets good guests. What McCain did was just plain RUDE... and shows signs of the same bait and switch tactics and secrecy I don't like currently.

def Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

Letterman's funny and charming, and I expect him to continue to be well past retirement. McCain acted like a d*****, and Letterman called him on it. When you do what McCain did, you deserve it.

LJF Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

It's classic Dave!

It is what it is. Busted! It was a major bonehead move by McCain... it was very, very bad "strategery" on so many levels.

But, it's Letterman. Who suffers no fools. Bottom-line -- it's a bit. It's funny, it plays, and as long as it plays it will live on and on and on and on until it's done.

Go Dave!

Linda Bux Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

Come on people, all McCain had to do was tell the truth. He blew it and Letterman has every right to be upset. It just shows that McCain has no respect for anybody. Another would be president who does whatever he wants, just like Bush. He chose Palin and he probably laughs at all of his followers.

Shea Taylor Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Letterman is out of line, McCain is right in focusing on the economy instead of campaigning, either on the trail or on an entertainment talk show. Appearing on the news is understandable. Get over yourself Dave - this is about what's best for America, not your enormous ego.

andy Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

Letterman is a overpaid retard.
His jokes are not funny and he is retarded.

James D Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

Letterman has always been a radical leftist and is totally out of touch. It surprised me that McCain would actually bother to appear on his show.

Letterman, the f'ing billionaire who's basically stealing CBS' money with his low ratings, constantly bashes Republicans and never says anything negative about Democrats.
Letterman just runs bits into the ground and he hasn't been funny since '94.

Joe D Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

I'm not typically a huge fan of Dave's work. Yet, when he shouted, "Hey Senator, do you need a ride to the airport?" I laughed as hard as I have in years.
Having someone ditch you and/or lie to your face is always a sad experience, and so to see Dave milking this one for all it's worth is downright hilarious.
McCain -- in this case -- deserves every last bit of humiliation and mocking that can be thrown his way.

Cheers to Dave!

recreant Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

Dave had every right to be pissed. McCain left him a great big gap in his program. Do you people dissing him have any idea of the pressure-cooker behind the scenes?

I am still waiting for the Republican definition of "elitist," by the way. Apparently it is code talk for "educated." To say that Dave, Michelle, or Barack emerged from an "elite" otherwise is dishonest...what famous/wealthy/powerful forebears do any of them have?

melinda Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

it's a legit complaint and of course, david letterman being david letterman, went on and on about it. he did praise the guy continually before finding out what was really happening. i'd be upset as well. david letterman would have been a good way for mccain to reach the voting public. but, instead, he went on the lowest-rated national evening news show. smart move, CBS. smart.

chicagopearl Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

Letterman needs to first wash Obama off of his nose and mouth. Then maybe - just maybe - he'll be ready for an evening with John McCain.

hondo Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Sigh. I remember when Dave was funny. Now, he's just a grumpy old man. Dave making old jokes about McCain is the pot calling the kettle black. Stay classy Dave.

Cheesehead Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

McCain should not underestimate Dave. His audience is a highly educated, well-informed demographic who have accurate BS detectors and are sick and tired of McCain portraying himself as a "maverick". The Straight Talk Express is now officially off the rails.

As for the CBS news division---this part of the network, with the exception of the superb Bob Schieffer, lost its relevance long ago. Thought Couric handled the interview with the vapid Sarah Palin skillfully (I'm sure she couldn't keep from laughing) the Evening News and its morning counterpart which seems to reinvent itself every few years are ratings duds. CBS bosses can whine all they want, but they should realize who sells the ad time.

Liz Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

It's sad the lengths David Letterman will go to get ratings for his out-dated, unfunny show. We all know he's in the tank for Obama, so anything he says or does re: McCain is tainted anyway.

Folks get lives or go to bed, stop watching this jerk!

Josephine A. Short Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Letterman is a pompous ass who thinks he is far more importmant than reality dictates. He's like a 3 year old who was told he can not have any ice cream. Go home Davy, change your diapers and try to put this behind you. Then, try to act like an idiot in the process. I don't ever watch you and don't ever plan to. Let us know if anyone slights you again. We'll kick in for the box of tissues, jerk

Paz Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

Letterman wasn't just ranting about McCain not showing up. He was ranting about his supoosed "suspension" of the campaign.
A long running feud with McCain would seem lame, but I'm glad Letterman spoke his mind. It's rare to see that on network TV nowadays because of the need to be PC about everything.

joe dirt Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

you people better leave mcbain alone, i hear he shoots bettr than cheney

Lance Kellogg Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

Who is David Letterman?

Nightmax Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I was surprised at how offended David Letterman seemed to get until I really took the time to listen to what his whole problem with John McCain really is. John McCain has unfortunately gotten quite wealthy hanging out with the Bushes of America, so much so that he seemes to have lost touch with what really is important in the lives of the American people. I agree with Pat above, he is a liar on many accounts, and although I stomached the Presidential Debate the other night, I still say Barack Obama will be our next President. I don't have to wait for the next debate. McCain is so out of touch with so much in America and so hung up on keeping our troops in the line of fire. I hate seeing so many people affected by the housing debacle, the Medicare problem, the extreme poverty, the lack of jobs, factory closures, and businesses moving across the ocean into other countries. I'm not worried about the four houses McCain he could lose and not sweat it. But for those with one I am.

Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I beleive that McCain didn't want to be on Letterman and didn't want to do the debates. He is showing his age big time and you could see the angry old man looking out. I am surprised that he didn't stomp out of the debate. It was only Obamas' good manners and maturity of character that held the thing together. Dave has a right to express his opinions. Go Dave!

pixiechic Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

there are many ways to skin a cat....but what's underneath all that skin is just the same....Just like what happened here with McCain & Dave...No matter how you try to see it...McCain got caught flat on his face...HE LIED!!!! A LIE IS A LIE IS A LIE!!! How can he get away with that? I'm looking it as an outsider..that's plain and simple..why people have to defend McCain? He's running out of time..so much more with Palin...If he's trying to impress...well..NOT!!!!

Lloyd Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

The facts are obvious. McCain definitely lied for no reason, as most liars do, they can't help themselves and it is habitual. Fact number 2, Letterman is a comedian, and thus is milking the incident for all it's worth, way past the importance of McCain's foolish lie. The difference is McCain is running for president and Letterman isn't, so it doesn't matter if Letterman is wrong. The important fact to take away from this is that a man running for president of the United States is unable to tell the truth, no matter what the circumstances. Through humor we have seen the real McCain exposed. We all know people like this, blowhards who start to believe their own bs after a while. My late father Leonard had this disease, so whenever anyone in my family runs into a habitual liar or storyteller, we say he/she has Lennyitis, the disease where the brain and the tounge are not necessarily working in unison. My father was not presidential material and neither is McCain. Case closed.

crm Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Um....Clinton was impeached for lying about cheating on his wife....at the request of his overpaid advisors and attorneys. Did we really impeach a man for lying about his sex life?? BTW...I live in an area that's run out of gas...do you think I really care if the next president cheats on his wife and lies about it JC? In fact quite a few president's have cheated on their wives...it's too bad the economy is about to collapse and we're still judging Clinton. We need to worry about what the next president does with regard to fixing what's broken...not who what and where he sleeps with...(and then lies about...)

NobodyYouKnow Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Letterman's been a bore for years, and who listens to him anyway? In fact, his stupidity is probably a plus for McCain, so I wish Letterman would shut up (and please don't endorse Obama, Dave; it's not a help to him or the Democrats)

nwgal Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Having a conservative complain that David Letterman isn't funny is like listening to Bush trying to explain economic policy by talking about how he's going to "make the pie higher." They so don't get it that they don't get that they don't get it. It'd be funny except when you remember that these people have the right to vote...

victor daltorio Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Dave's comments about McCain are absolutely fair and VERY funny. McCain is a habitual liar who pretends to be a straight-talker, and that's what Letterman is lampooning--his blatant hypocrisy. Keep it up Dave. Somebody has to call bull---t on this guy, because the news media doesn't have the guts.

To Steve-o Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Way to take down JC. Wait, what I mean is, way to accuse JC of saying nothing in a post in which you say, um, nothing. Typical liberal - all in favor of the truth, unless that truth is turned against liberals.

Letterman And The Liberal Media Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

That is what I read- that he said it wasn't a night for comedy. You obviously read something different. Do you even realize how packed their schedules are? Who could even blame a presidential or VP candidate wanting to stay away from the liberal media unless it a legitimate news program? The media is using their clout to smear him. Google Zucker ( NBC head) and the anti McCain ad about his cancer? If you want to talk about liars why don't you google Joe Biden and how his first wife was killed by a "drunk" driver? How come the media is not making a big stink about THAT lie?
