Kevin Smith's Banned-in-the-US 'Porno' Poster: Exclusive first look!

Sep 3, 2008, 12:00 AM | by Marc Bernardin

Categories: Advertising, An EW Exclusive!, Film, I'm Just a Geek

Zachmiripornposter_l You know what's so special about this, the first poster for Kevin Smith's new flick, Zack and Miri Make a Porno (due out October 31st)? It's not that the one-sheet drops just before the movie's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (which it does), or that Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks look so surprised, or that the chocolate-mint color scheme is making me a little hungry for Friendly's. No, it's that you'll only see this poster in Canada.

Even after winning an appeal to overturn Porno's NC-17 rating, Smith says the MPAA won't give their blessing to the image shown here—which is eyes-only for our neighbors to the north. "When you've got the word 'porno' in the title, naturally, the marketing materials are gonna be scrutinized more closely by the MPAA," says the director. "I understand they've got a job to do, but c'mon...this image isn't that dirty; they're both fully clad."

We can just add this to the long list of things we have Canada to thank for, like William Shatner, Michael J. Fox, and the fittingly monikered Peter North. "I've always loved Canada and Canadians for giving us hockey," says Smith. "Now, I love 'em just a little bit more. For allowing tufts of hair."

hahahah your kids will not even understand what it means unless you have already exposed them to explicit material..

Disgruntled Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

I have no opinion on the poster itself, but those of you who are whining about it being banned are total hypocrites.

"It's just a poster! Why is the MPAA so offended?"

If it's just a poster, then why are you so offended that it was banned? You can find the poster here and elsewhere on the web!

The comments near the top are even worse.

"Get over yourselves, or get eaten by bears, either way I'm happy."

"Ted, you should cut your children's eyes out if they offend you."

Honestly, guys. Your main argument is that nobody cares about what the poster depicts. Somebody who does care comes along and disagrees with you, and you tell him to mutilate his kids and kill himself?

So, we know the MPAA's reason for banning the poster, but why do you want the poster so badly, huh? Like I said, you've already seen the poster here. What does it matter that you won't see it elsewhere? Just so that you get to snicker at it and pass a juvenile joke to your buddy in an AMC hallway?

Brady Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Hey Ted (the overprotective guy with his kids), the rest of the world isn't going to adorn itself with protetive wall outlets and corner covers for you and your shitty little kids. Get over yourselves, or get eaten by bears, either way I'm happy.

kevin_Smith Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

i made this movie so i could show the world elizibeth's boobies.
srsly, it's a kevin smith flick, what did you guys expect? driving miss daisey ?

Brice Gilbert Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

Has no one even noticed that "coming soon" part? That to me is the entire joke.

@Ted Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:00 AM EST

But the poster doesn't depict oral sex. It suggests oral sex, but only to people already familiar with the concept. And if your kids already knows what oral sex is, then this poster won't do them any harm.

Connie Dobbs Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Ted, you should cut your children's eyes out if they offend you.

Ted2 Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

Ted Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

Chris, if you're in america, move to Canada. I don't want my kids seeing posters depicting oral sex.

Chris Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

it is sad to see the USA not all being a country of free speech.
the ideas remind me of the taliban!
really!
Taliban dont allow women to show skin but like to marry 8yrs old girls.
USA doenst allow nudity, free speech and like but advocate violence and use of weapons.

to me THAT is retardation by fundamentalism...be it christian or muslim.

Daniel Sorknæs Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 07:53 AM EST

You poor people are being morally herded around by extremist Christian values, like europeans during the Middle Ages. I feel sorry for you.

Obstacle Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

The honorable members of the MPAA got so perversely turned on by EB's facial expression that they banned the poster to protect the innocent 40-year-old virgins in the U.S. from having similar sinful thoughts, and took home with them the review copies so that they could engage in their own re-enactment of this unspeakable form of carnal gratification.

Crystal Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I agree that the horror movie posters out there are WAY more disturbing. That being said, EB face cracks me up here. Enjoy, Canucks!

Rabbit Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Oh, but note to 'please no more'; I happen to like guys who are less than "perfect" (those type are usually full of themselves but then men are in general) so Seth Rogen as a romantic lead doesn't disturb me at all.

Rabbit Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

God, I'm naive! I was viewing the hair at the bottom of the poster as if the computer had regenerated the photos/headshots and it was a glitch of sorts. Hooo, boy!
I get it now, of course, but sheesh! Everyone got all up in arms over something that will probably not even go noticed by the general public?

Mr. President Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

My name is Bush.

Kelsey Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

Why don't just cut off the bottom of the poster so you don't see tips of their heads. There are ways to work around that. I mean come the movie is about a porno, the MPAA should have guessed they would do something like this.

Bosephus5000 Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

@ @Bosephus5000

Thanks for the clarification.

And here's to you getting that stick out of your ass real soon. Cheers.

Shasta Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Seth Rogan's FACE should be censored! YEAH!!!

@Bosephus5000 Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

A regular turd is just a sh*t of a person. An anal turd is a sh*t of a person who anal retentively obsesses over other people's typos... like you. Now, shouldn't you be off scrubbing my floors you little b*tch?

Sarah Palin Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

OMG, this is incredibly offensive !! We need to ban this and the movie itself from America ! And ban all books that I don't like too ! Trust me, I'm a woman.

myspace dot ryzatamusic Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Well, i don't see a big deal about the poster, not worth the fuss they are making. I agree that violence should be monitored more than sex as far as public displays go. I mean would you rather have your child wetting the bed in fear or maybe waking up to a little sticky in their pants which is going to happen eventually anyway.
To the guy who can't get hot girls, just turn up the confidence, believe it or not personality goes a lot further than looks in the long run, and I'm proud to say that I got a little of both going on.
Health care, yea, I live in the US and I think Canada has us beat on that front for the time being. I know that I have trouble paying for things not covered on my state insurance.
IE: they'll hollow out my teeth for free, schedule a follow-up to finish the procedure and then call me a few days prior to the appointment informing me that it's not covered. At least I can get my scripts dirt cheap which would otherwise destroy my bank.
Poster should say "Cumming Soon"

chicka yeah Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Go canada!

filmboymichael Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

I believe in the movie Seth Rogen's character and Elizabeth Banks' character are best friends who are roommates....

house015 Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

Do you people think that the Bush administration set up the MPAA?? Are you that retarded that you can't Google and find out it's been around since before Kennedy? On the other hand, yeah, torture porn posters are OK but mock porn posters with fully clothed goof-balls are out of bounds. Whatever. Kevin Smith directed it so I've as much as bought the tickets already.

fab Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

Canada ROcks(maybe not 'cause winter is coming)...so anyways! can't wait to see this movie! I don't think the poster is offensive..but after your nipplegate I can see why this poster is banned!

Josef Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

Don't blame the King of Queens, blame the Flintstones! What did Betty and Wilma ever see in those two?!?

Silent Screenwriter Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:14 AM EST

Kevin didn't think ahead in my view. He could have slipped past all three neurons at the MPAA by doing what we do on teh interwebs. "Zack and Miri make a pr0n." Then the MPAA would have thought, "What the f*** is up with that s***? It's not a daily serve of violence and grotesque gore for the kiddies to protect their innocence. I don't understand. Eh, let it pass."

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:27 AM EST

The more the MPAA messes with this film, the more I want to see it. Twice.

Tom Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:12 AM EST

A guy like that can certainly get a lady like that - I'm living proof! :D

Jake Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:55 AM EST

It doesn't matter. It's a stupid poster anyway. Where do people get off thinking a fat stoner guy like Rogen gets women like Banks in every movie? I think people have been watching King of Queens too much and now think this is the norm. It's not.

The MPPA is a group of puritanical, whinning Republican, tight
ass's,who would not recognize talent if it climbed in bed with them.
It just shows you what 8 yrs. of a tyranical, oppresive administration can do to damage a country.
Lord knows what can happen after witnessing the Vice Presidental candiate from the party in powers selection.
The crowd to which she preached the rep.creed, stood there,mouth-breathing

Gorilla Burger Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

Nowhere else in the Western world is more prudish about sex than the US. PG-13 flicks can have the most horrific violence, yet show so much as the crescent of an actress' nipple and its R. Yet sex is generally far more commonplace than violence. What would be more disturbing to see in real life, 2 people killing each other or 2 people having sex (Michael Moore with Amy Winehouse doesn't count)?

The further Kevin Smith and the Weinstein company push the envelope here the less money it will make at the boxoffice. Didn't these guys learn anything from SNAKES ON A PLANE. Movies can count on FANBOYS alone. I really believe the mainstream movie goer will reject this big time!

mscisluv Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

LOL @ Greg - "Zack & Miri Get a Piggy-Back Ride" - Love it! I've definitely seen movie posters worse than this (and yes, the Good Luck Chuck poster was basically identical). And I agree that the worst offenders are the horror movies. That poster from the movie Captivity (with the woman's bloody finger sticking through a cage) was nightmare-inducing. What harm is this going to cause?

@Bosephus5000 Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

WHY ARE THERE A BUNCH OF WHINY BABIES COMMENTING ON THIS POSTER? ITS NOT BAD THERE IS NO NUDITY. SURE, IT IMPLIES SOMETHING BUT SO WHAT? IT HAS THE WORD PORNO IN IT I MEAN HELLO! HELL A FEW PEOPLE WHO DID COMMENT THINK ITS BEING BANNED FOR THE USE OF THE WORD PORNO. AND AS FAR AS PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT KEVIN SMITHS AWESOME MOVIES (JERSEY GIRL EXCLUDED) WHY ARE YOU EVEN ON THIS ARTICLE PAGE? AFTER ALL IT IS TITLED, Kevin Smith's Banned-in-the-US 'Porno' Poster: Exclusive first look! ......IDIOTS

Bear Is Driving! Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

The only really offensive thing going on here is Kevin Smith being given the money to make another one of his, ahem, "films."

I hear the next one will be a "Saw"-like horror movie featuring similarly exotic methods of torture. I understand that one segment involves a man who's forced to push himself away from a dessert tray.

Jason Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Oh yeah... Kevin Smith is a no-talent hack and I won't touch this movie with a ten foot pole.

Jason Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Rebekah, I wouldn't be too proud of Canada. We're one step removed from Bush cronyism with a conservative majority government just around the corner. And "to Lucy", while our health care system is not perfect and under attack, it remains accessible to all citizens and not just the rich.

Broadway Baby Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I'm with Raven_Moon on this one. Horror movie posters are far more offensive. I had to stop going to public places with my kids while the advertising for One Missed Call was out. When my oldest boy saw it he immediately started crying and it gave him nightmares for several more nights. Is anyone at the MPAA currently parents of YOUNG children? The MPAA has its role - it just doesn't play it very well - at all.

please no more Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

I love rogen, but seeing him in any romance part, much less a porn, almost makes me throw up in my mouth, please god, from one of his biggest fans, no more romance! spare me!

Joseph massimino Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

That poster is mild in every way. Have you see n the beer commercial that is going around the net. That has truely 10,000 percent more porn in its attributes than this poster. Not to mention that the movie doesn't look like anything I ever plan to see. There are so many good movies hitting the big screen in the next month or two. This one will be on DVD in 4 months.

Rich Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

"The idea is okay, but the execution sucks."
Now THAT's funny.

JJ Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Forget the poster. I agree with Delon; I've had enough of Seth Rogen's one trick characterization. When will the whole "how cool is the slacker dude" trend come to an end?

Beverly Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

The MPAA needs to lighten up a little---or maybe they just need to get out a little more...

Rebekah Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

And that's why Canada rules! It's basically the US with minus the conservativism.

Amanda Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Am I the only one who thinks this poster is not very good? The idea is okay, but the execution sucks.

I hope the non-banned poster is more clever.

Wil Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

OMG whats the MPAA thinking? every one knows that Seth Rogen is to ulgy to be in a real porno, maybe thay are just trying to help out with ticket sales- Keven Smith should thank them!!!.

steve Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

A great movie poster. After seeing the trailer, I know that this movie is going to be classic. Looks like a laugh a minute and its 3 short months away. Looking forward to it.

Peter Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

Uh, no, The Tudors is NOT uncensored on CBC at 9pm.

They've made cuts to help reach a more mainstream audience.

I believe the reruns on CBC-owned Bold (a digital channel) are uncut, though.

to Lucy Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Hey Lucy, here in the U.S. we can schedule a medical procedure the exact day we need it. Keep the Tudors on the CBC, and I'll take not having to wait 9 months to schedule a biopsy. :-)

Bosephus5000 Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

@ go MPAA!!!

I love it when people attack others' intelligence, and then misspell "retarded". It's right up there with "Your an idiot!", hahaha.

Winona Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

I wish I still had it (I'd kept it in my office cube for years), but several years ago, the Chicago Tribune put on the cover of its Sunday magazine a game picture of Dick Butkus with the head of a Packer player in a very similar position.

go MPAA!!! Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

Nobody would have cared about this poster. By banning it, they've assured it gets a featured spot on movie websites everywhere, and an extra-long look by everyone who will now be curious to see why it's banned in the USA (evidently the first amendment can s*ck the MPAA's b*lls). You'd think these nutty right-wingers who want to ban everything that their prudish mini-brains can't process would have learned a lesson from the record stickering fiasco in the 80s (remember they'd put that "profanity" label on the record that guaranteed the artist sells a million extra copies... so much so that artist started going out of their way to make sure they got stickered?). Oh well, just goes to prove what i've always said, conservatives are mentally retarted.

Greg Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

So would the same poster be banned in the U.S. if the title of the movie was changed to "Zack and Miri get a piggy-back ride" ?

Tom Strong Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

I saw the trailer for this and it is the most unfunny thing I've seen all year. Kevin Smith has no talent.

Nonnie Mus Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

We're violent psychopaths down here in the good ol' US of A, but at least we're not fornicating perverts! Oh, wait . . .

BrandonK Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 06:11 AM EST

Nick, it's not like it's even actually showing sexual activity...it's just suggesting it. The MPAA is definitely screwed up.

I find it amusing that Americans are so goofy about sex. Here in Canada we get the Tudors uncut at 9pm on the CBC.

wasnt there a poster just like that for that jessica alba and dane cook movie ?

Nick Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 12:21 AM EST

I never understood people's lines with violence vs. sex. Saw can have broken teeth, and real blood on it but normal sexual activity is banned?

John Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 12:19 AM EST

The poster is banned because you see the top of their heads at the others pelvic area. Think about it.

Carlos Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

Wow. Because the word "Porno" is in the title it's banned, but the MPAA doesn't mind images of violence, murder, blood or horror. Ridiculous.

saybo Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

Seriously? The MPAA is such a joke sometimes...

Raven_Moon Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

I can't say that I love the poster, but it's not that bad. Honestly, I'm more offended by poster for "horror" (torture porn) films like Saw & Hostel.
