In Defense of Rihanna's VMA outfit

Sep 8, 2008, 07:26 PM | by Tim Stack

Categories: Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion, Music, Video Music Awards 2008

Rihanna_l I love Rihanna.  I love her fashion sense.  I even loved the loony ensemble she wore for her "Disturbia" performance at last night's VMAs and I don't really understand all the criticism she's getting for it. It's not like she wore this outfit to accept the Nobel Prize; she wore it during a performance at an awards show where spectacle is everything. And it was a themed performance. She was supposed to be scary! The song ain't called "Adorablia." She looked like a sweet girl who, clearly from the tattered ballerina-esque train in the back, was attacked by the people of Disturbia. Or was she their queen?  Oh well. It's okay, Rihanna.  I understood what you were trying to go for. And that's really all that matters.

At least you didn't decide to show up channeling Linda Hogan as Christina Aguilera seemingly did.

Wow, Dahlia. Your link was hilarious. Lady Caca...haha

You are so right! Christina is ripping off of Lady Gaga and Gaga sucks!

Anyway, I was searching for the tights because Rihanna's outfit is awesome. Found some at goelle.net

Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Yeah she looked good, ot sure about her new style but it certainly fits her new song, Why do people have to have such an opinion on the VMAs its crazy!

Dorian martin Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

people, people Rihanna is a fashion icon, what ever she wears is hot, she could even wear a sack and make it look killer sexy, her profromance wasnt the best but the outfit was off the chain, from the detailing of the feathers to the tattred white portion at the back screams creativity. rihanna has a excellent sence of style, let's not judge her because we all fail to think out side of the box. rihanna is trend-setter and has grown fasion wise to her hair stylist i tip my hat the mullet was diffrent and i loved it. it is because we are so use to seeing little pretty girls in pretty dresses the reason we can our moreso you can not accept fasion or edgeiness when you see,the whole rocker/dominatrix outfits is rihanna's style, besides xtina was wearing a sink uitard and i guess that was fashion and creativity at it best, right! rihanna you are so awsome, good looking and sexy, everyone here thats hating wants to be just like you so haters piss off and go get some style your biggest fan.

sunshine Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

The movie women seems to be put together great. I love each of the stars

Jamie Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

I thought Rihanna's performance sucked. I could barely hear her. I think she should have wore the outfit in her music video. Christina performance rocked. Everyone knows that she can sing besides this VMAs sucked so bad this year it didn't even deserve a brilliant performance by her.

Armenia Kiso Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

i love rihanna. she is always amazing. i love her songs!!

PRETTY GIRL Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

I'm not really a fan of rihanna and i still think she looked nice.Y'all should stop HATING

Britant Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:57 AM EST

She looked beautiful, her outfit was fine, its her voice that sucked, maybe she was nervous, but that what she gets for laughing at Britney last year.

raven Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

well, considering that she came out of a giant black cake (well, at least i think it was a cake) at the beginning of the performance, i'm gonna say that she was kinda homaging the whole britney, madonna, christina thing from a few years back (since it was the 25th anniversary of the vmas)only making it all dark and with no awesome, shocking kiss. and the vmas sucked out loud this year. rihanna wasn't too bad though. well, i like the song anyway.

Maria Rivera Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

RIHANNA LOOKED NASTY IN THAT OUTFIT. her thighs are so big and her calfs are little its so unproportioned. oh, and there are so many other black girls out there that are prettier than her and in shape!!!

Rihanna's biggest fan Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

I agree with RayT. I'm obsessed with Rihanna as well. I'll admit that she did not sound her best at the VMAs but I feel like she just had an off night. The outfit was hot. It was a reflection of the song. My theory is this... if you're a female and you don't think Rihanna's hot, you're a big time HATER! If you're a guy and you don't think Rihanna's hot, you're G@Y!!!! Point Blank! Hate it or Love it!

helen Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Rihanna is AMAZING!!!!! she always looks pretty and she wouldnt wear that outfit for getting her award she has got comon sense anyway its nice

shantel toombs Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

all you haters can literally go to hell her, outfit is gorgeous and sexy for her new release!!!!! she's a true rocker chick.what do you expect

will Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:12 AM EST

rihanna is mad hott she can do wht she wants people just lay of her who cares what she wears

matthew harris Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:44 AM EST

i like u new song its amasing xx

Philip John Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

Haler!!!!! Christina doesn't have to prove she can sing...and what's with the comments that she's copying Lady Gaga, hello?!? is Lady Gaga original herself? NO. No one is original anymore. and oh Timoy Stack, you're defending Rihanna and yet you're criticizing Christina. How silly.

jah blum Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

RIHANNA WILL U MARRY MEEEEE!!!

R Rothchild Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I don't understand why everyone thinks Rihanna is hot. I mean she's attractive but definitely not Maxim Hot 100 material. So will everyone please quit gushing about this girl. Her music's nothing to write home about either.

NYCFLOWERS Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

I thought her legs and hips looked fat in that get-up. I also didn't understand why she had what looked like toilet paper hanging from her butt.

Stephanie T. Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

Rihanna can't sing high note ballads. The dominatrix outfit was awesome and it highlighted her best feature-her legs. Any woman would kill to have those stems.

fancypants Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

let's be honest. you may be a huge rihanna and/ or britney fan and acknowledge that they're very successful, good looking, make great songs and can put on a great show w/ great production values, but THE TRUTH IS THAT THEY CANNOT SING!! AT ALL! can't we expect more as consumers? to me, if you're not bringing it with the vocals like christina, alicia keys or beyonce, then you will be expendable in a matter of years. or become sexually overt and desperate like madonna.

shaun scott Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

i love rihanna she has a good voice.
she must be proud of her self.

by shaun scott

Amanda Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

She's getting criticized for this? But Rihanna ALWAYS wears crazy dominatrix outfits. It's, like, her thing and it's one of the greatest things about her (the other being her ability to pick out slick, hooky pop tunes).

Stef Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Gail Riley is drinking the kool-aide...

I prefer to listen to singers that can hold a continuous note, not have to break up the note (a la 'Umbrella') in order to disguise the fact that they can't actually sing.

daliana Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

To Keisha:
Maybe she should have chosen a different song :)
I think she is talented but somehow everything she did on Sunday was actually disturbing.

Keisha Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

Rihanna did a great job and duh the song is called "disturbia" thats why she wore that kind of outfit...So anybody that didn't understand it is simply close-minded and have nothing else better to do than to hate off some one who isn't afraid of taking chances...so while yall on the computer saying hateful remarks about her, she's actually living her life to the fullest with no regrets obviously

gail riley Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

I don't know what's up with Rih and the haters. She is just as good a singer as Britnet,Miley or any of the others. They just hate her because she's beautiful and not afraid to be herself instead of pretending like Miley and the others do. What you see is what you get. I still hate the fact that hse is dating Chris Brown, I love him to death, but to each its own.

dcet Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

Rihanna cannot sing...
That's all I'm saying

Jen Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I don't know why there's even an issue with Rihanna's outfit? THIS IS THE VMAs!! It's not like she wore the Lil Kim pastie outfit? I thought it was appropriate to her performance and she looked hot - and I'm not even a fan.

And by the way Britney fans, Brit may have looked great but she came off like a quasi-rehearsed broken record. She's got a weird look in her eye. Maybe it's madcow?

RayT Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Sorry that posted twice. My browser crapped out and I thought I had to retype the whole thing!

RayT Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

I don't love Rihanna. I'm OBSESSED with her! I already thought "Good Girl Gone Bad" was the best mainstream album of last year, and that was even before she rereleased it with the amazing "Disturbia." It's a shame people are hating on her VMA performance. It's very rare that a black artist is allowed to move outside the bling and Cristal-themed style of videos/performances/etc. (I think their record labels force them to conform to the standard.) While I'll admit she's not vocally flawless (she's a performer, not a "singer"), RiRi should be praised for putting together a phenomenal performance that expanded on the incredible, David LaChapelle-helmed video, let us see her in a different light image-wise, and was remixed to include elements of "Seven Nation Army" and "Sweet Dreams." She could've just stood there in a Juicy Courture sweatsuit and lip-synched. Viva la RiRi!

While I'll admit she isn't vocally flawless (but again, she's a performer, not a "singer"), it's so annoying how people are hating on the style of the performance. SAVE SWINGTOWN!SAVE SWINGTOWN!

shut it Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

Who really cares, because Pink stole the show anyway! She can really sing and looks HOT. She was the only thing worth watching on the VMAs.

Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I thought Britney looked so great. I loved seeing her like her old seft again. Hope it continues

Nikki Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

I'm not the only one to say it but Christina was totally ripping off Lady Gaga. And I thought she looked awful in the skin tight pants she was wearing. I know she had a baby but her legs and hips looked bad in such tight pants

Dahlia Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

I was disappointed by Rihanna's performance vocally and her energy was zapped but some of you seem to have a personal vendetta against with girl. Damn! Chill out! Why are you wasting that much energy on someone you hate so much? Grow up!

And Christina (bless her)is totally ripping off Lady GaGa:
http://neonlimelight.com/2008/09/08/fashion-notes-christina-aguilera-reveals-new-look-at-vmas/

Her sounds and look. Sad!

Sarah Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Ha! I came in late for Christina's performance and I though it was Brooke Hogan on the stage!

mitzy Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

can't stand her

Rachel Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

who cares what she wore, she is the worst singer ever, why has everyone gone crazy for her! Everytime I see she is on the tube I cringe! What is wrong with everyone, have we all just settled for this horrible singer??

Nancy Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

Oh, snap! on the Christina A. comment. Sad but true. I love Christina A, but between her "look" and the lip synching, the performance was a hot mess.

Rihanna's outfit was great. I don't get the criticism.

JoeC Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

I like Rhianna and Britney on the uptempo numbers, especially. 'Disturbia' is a cool song. As for the outfit, I've seen it before, lol.

LK Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

Xtina was channeling Lady Gaga not Linda Hogan

Samantha Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

Did anyone watch the Project Runway last season when Michael Kors commented that one designer's dress made it look like she was "pooing fabric"? That's what I thought of when I saw this outfit! Otherwise I agree that it was an extension of the video.

Jael Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

It fit the theme of the song. My only issue is the bustle. Even so, it's funky and fashion forward. Cheers for the Rodarte tights. Her red carpet dress, however, was lacking her usual spark. http://fashionmefabulous.blogspot.com

Chyna Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

I dont c wat da big deal is her outfit was her choice to xpress herself. So 2 all the ppl hatin on her let it go,she is entitled 2 wear wat she wants, now as for Britney dnt make me go there. The 1st time in a year she dont appear insane & ppl are on her like hot cakes.I don get you ppl.Mayb if you we should go back to baggin on Britney that was fun 4 me.N 4 da person who compared Rhianna 2 Chris Brown,PLEASE,just because they come in the pair doesnt mean they can be COMPARED!Bt neway I think her performance and chioce of clothing was a gret match, she's gettin sumwhere,n 4 that Im proud of her.Wat have u ppl done LATELY?

coco Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

For rihana's second performance it seemed that she was more concerned about not flashing her boobs that about performing. She was grabbing her jacket all the time. Should have wore double side tape and perform.

coco Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

Rihanna- great performance and the outfit matched the song. It was not a runway people!!!!
Xtina- it was like a bad mix of Maddona and old Britney. I liked her new song, although it is very different from typical Xna which is OK because change every once in a while is good.
Whoever compared Rihanna with last year's Britney is so wrong, not even close. Last year Britney f*7ck-up and this year Rihanna rocked.

just a thought Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

Rihanna is pretty, sings fine, her zombie looking dancers were cool..but I thought the white clump of fabric hanging from her backside looked out of place. She should have ripped that part off and went with her basic outfit. But in the end it's just another award show, another weird outfit...gotta love it.

Winona Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

Only Rihanna could've gotten away with that outfit. And for the record, I thought Xtina was pulling a Donatella Versace, not Linda Hogan.

Cocoa Queen Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

Get a grip people. Her outfit was very theatrical and if you saw the video an obvious extension. No she isn't the best vocalist...but on the whole the entire show was kinda blah. The could've put Christina Aguilera's performance at the beginning because it was interesting.

wendy Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Didn't mind the outfit but she did look like a horse with the hair and tail and all.

lynx765 Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

im not upset at the outfit, because that was the look she was going for...but vocally her performance was a letdown...collectively w/ the dancers and everything it didn't fit the bill...

jarhead Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

rihanna sucks very very bad singer cant sing and dance bad performance she will be forgotten over a few years

Christopher Kalie Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

Rihanna had less energy than Britney did last year! For the opening act it was an incredible let down. She even proved that she has no rhythm during her 2nd performance.

Overall the VMAs sunk to a new low - can't believe it was supposed to be a 25th anniversary celebration! where were all the big hitters this year???

Michael Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

I turned the VMAs off after seeing Rihanna. Can we please stop the homage to MJs Thriller? Except for her singing that who bit was terrible.

Silv Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

Rihanna looked gorgeous. Her performance was an extension of the video. It's all for the show, for pete's sake, not like she goes around looking like that every day.

Djole Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

Rihanna je najbolja, i uvek ce biti!!! Rihanna rocks, and she always will!!! Live your life, ain't got no time for them haters!!!!

PeterBilt The Nature Boy Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:22 AM EST

She used to be gorgeous on her first two albums, then she cut her hair and now she looks like the alien from 'Mac and Me'.

Jeta Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 06:05 AM EST

I saw her both performances and they were the best perfomances ever...Rihanna always looks perfect♥

suzette Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:31 AM EST

Rihanna was on point! Both performances rocked and there's no criticism here. That performace with TI solidified her rockstar status and clearly it struck a note with the hateration out there otherwise you wouldn't be commenting. She's unique and doesn't have the same R&B modus operandi and that's why I respect her game. BIg up RIH RiH.

Springbreak Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 04:26 AM EST

Rihanna's VMA outfit = FUGLY! Nuff said!

bruno Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST

ohmygod...aguliera was TOTALLY chanelling linda hogan.

Staci Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

What brand is TI's white jacket?

I Adore Rihanna Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:11 AM EST

All of you are DUMB. all u ppl talkin trach about Rihanna are wacked out. You think she really give a rats ass if u like her Disturbia outfit, or her nasel'd voice or if u like her being with Chris Brown?! helll to the NO! she doesnt give a &*(^ she doesnt even kno yall. She has more money than you.. she certainly has more money than you mom and dad and whole family tree combined.. so stop talkin trash... chris brown loved her performance (He was seeing along) and he loves being with her obviously.. so stop HATIN.. yall will never EVER have him or Have her FAMe, soo like really wtf is all thw HOopla about. Remember Rihanna is soo BIG because she has Fans... its ppl like (the above) who keep her going... jus to prove yall wrong =)

Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

wow...why is everyone so harsh? thank goodness someone finally noticed how awesome rihanna's outfit was.
christina was lip synching! at least we know rihanna isn't faking it.

obviously you rihanna haters dont follow fashion.

ARE YOU SERIOUS???? Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

OMG!! She looked like an idiot in the opening act. What a terrible performance on her part. She looked like a wanna-be chris brown thriller remake. She needs to face the fact that she is not as talented as her beau. And I have to mention WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH THE MULLET???? Are you serious? What a weirdo i can't believe she walked out with that fake ass crap glued to her head. How riDICKulous! Thank god she redeemed her self with the 2nd performance because the 1st was a terrible. It was so bad I am surprised it didn't get as much coverage. Everybody is still talking about Britney......

confidential Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

I have absolutly no idea what people are talking about in concerns to Rhianna or Britney talent. Neither have much. Britney can't sing and I don't care about dancing and Rhianna is smoke and mirrors... Pretty girl pretty clothes, no talent. Why O Why won't the world just let go of its obession with Britney so we can focus some media attention on singers whom actually sing?

Diamond Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

Rihanna may-not be the best singer but her performance was REALLY GOOD! That's what counts anyway, if you can't deliver a performance then you might as well just walk off.. But Mrs. Rihanna did a good job! Even when she was on stage with T.I. (The best song/perfomance throughout the whole show) was VERY GOOD!!!

Linda Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Rihanna's outfit was hot. Quite hot, it fits her body like a leather glove-BUT-her voice not so much. Rihanna always has sort of a nasaly tone to her singing, even though her voice is strong. You can hear that and her voice cracking during her performance at the VMAs, overall: her voice couldn't match her rock'n outfit. :(

Ames Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

There's nothing wrong with Rihanna's outfit. Fits the song and the video.

But Xtina...don't diss her. She freaking rocked.

Ames Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

There's nothing wrong with Rihanna's outfit. Fits the song and the video.

Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

They were tights you retard not jeans.GOOSH YOU GUYS ARE RERARDED?As my friend napolean would say

Melanie Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

I didnt see her first performance, but I really have thougth for some time that rhirhi is more looks than talent or even stage presence. The peformace with TI proved that because after the great pose to begin it all, she looked awkward the entire time.
The outfit however is ok, as its supposed to be dramatic.

Ms. Aguilera on the other hand looked like a weird combo of Paula Abdul's wacky perfomance VMA outfit & that mom & walmart thats wearing the too-tight jeans

bootsycolumbia Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

God, what an fugly outfit!!! Those boots are hideous! But so what--it's the VMAs. Who cares? Aren't the performers supposed to dress like that?

Snarf Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

Gotta say - she knows how to make an enterence.

Raven_Moon Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

First off, let me say that I do not like Rihanna. I've never heard a song by her that didn't make me cringe. That being said, "Disturbia" is the first song by her that I find tolerable & honestly I didn't see anything wrong with her ensemble. I've certainly seen worse, especially on the VMA's.

Aldous Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

What kills me is that her outfit (or her performance) wasn't any better than Britney's last year, yet we were allowed to crap all over Britney. God forbid we take down Rihanna. Who's half as talented and has about a quarter the staying power.
