Still scarred from 'Fred Claus,' but willing to give 'Four Christmases' a chance

Loyal PopWatchers might recall that it was after seeing Vince Vaughn in the horribly unfunny holiday movie Fred Claus that we coined the term 'nut guard': "The credit on an actor's résumé that is so beloved it stops fans from wanting to actually kick him where it hurts after sitting through his latest stinker." (We were unable to physically harm Vaughn because he has a nut guard for Swingers. For a gallery of other actors' protective wear, click here.)

So you can understand why we were a little nervous to see the trailer for Four Christmases (below), a festive comedy starring Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as a couple forced to spend the holiday with each of their divorced parents.

Though the trailer doesn't 100 percent sell us on the Witherspoon-Vaughn pairing, Vince did make us laugh. Particularly with that "I'm gonna do it, too!" line.*

What do you think? Better than Fred Claus?

* Okay, maybe that was just me.

i don't know. i need to see a few more scenes before i can officially decide, but i don't generally watch christmas/holiday movies in theaters anyway.

I come from divorced parents. I understand the four christmases and I likey the funny!

This will definitely be better than Fred Claus. No digital elves!

Will it be funny? It looks mildly amusing. Witherspoon helps, so it's an interesting pair-up.

Definitely looks better than Fred Claus. LOL

Raven_Moon Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

I'm not sure. It does look better than "Fred Claus," though I never actually saw it. Also, I think Vince says, "I'm gonna do it too!" not "I'm gonna do a 2!"

Is the guy at the airline ticket counter Peter Billingsley? (The kid from "A Christmas Story")

Al Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Looks like good fun, but I think that Vince says, "I'm gonna do it too!" instead of "I'm gonna do a 2!"

Either way, I chuckled!

it's not "i want to do a 2", it's "i want to do it 2". & by it he means vomit. funny tho.

I love Reese. Vince, not so much. But, I'll still see it. Looks cute.

The poster made me cringe, but the preview doesn't look half bad. I'm sure my wife and I will end up seeing it when we need a break from Christmas shopping.

The general rule is the earlier the release of a holiday film, the more it sucks. Beware Christmas movies released in October.

Maybe it's because I had such low expectations, but that acutally looks pretty funny - good stuff for around the holidays...

E Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Since I adore both Reese and Vince, I'll be there for this one. I think it looks pretty good anyway.

Mandi, we're on the same page today! (see my comment on "The Women". I can't help wondering if you're commenting on this trailer because you saw it before The Women, as I did.) It actually looks like something I'd like to see. It may have something to do with my undying affection for Reese Witherspoon, though. I swear, I'd follow her off a cliff.
