2008 Emmys: Who got snubbed? Which winners delighted you?

Sep 22, 2008, 01:28 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Lost', 'Ugly Betty', Emmys, EWwys 2008

Zeljkoivanekvanessawilliamsemmys_l Look, I didn't want to have to run another photo of Ugly Betty's Vanessa L. Williams on PopWatch this week -- okay, that's a blatant lie -- but after she got snubbed by Emmy tonight for the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy statuette, I had no choice but to vent. No disrespect to Jean Smart, who's a terrific actress, but let me just say that Samantha Who? rhymes with "get a clue!" I know, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I just finished four hours of grueling live blogging, my brain aches a little, and nothing makes sense in a world where the woman who has given us two seasons of Wilhelmina Slater awesomeness still doesn't have a freakin' Emmy! So yeah, Vanessa (L. Yeah) Williams is my pick for the biggest Emmy snub of 2008. (First runner-up goes to Lost, naturally. The show's total shutout on the Emmy telecast was completely screwy, though a well-dressed birdie tells me the ABC drama could still take home a little something from EWwy when those winners are announced right here on EW.com at 10 a.m. EDT today.)

It wasn't all bad, though. I let out a little "squeee!" when under-the-radar (but totally worthy) Zeljko Ivanek took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for his work on Damages. When you look at this fine character actor's IMDb page, you realize he's been in pretty much everything, without ever managing to become a household name. And so a night that finds him taking home one of his industry's most prestigious prizes can't be all bad. Not to mention that shows with small (but passionate) audiences like Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, In Treatment, Damages, and Mad Men got the kind of recognition that -- while it doesn't always lead to increased audiences -- can help to keep the Grim Reaper at bay for an extra season or two.

Anyhow, I'm wondering what you all thought of the 2008 Emmys telecast. What were the biggest snubs? Which winners had you cheering from your living room? Vent or celebrate or do a little of both on our message boards right now!

And if you're hungry for more Emmy fare, check out EW's complete list of Emmy winners, a groovy gallery of celebrity photos (that you can buy on eBay!) taken at EW's Emmy party, a big, juicy lineup of Emmy red-carpet videos courtesy of Michael Ausiello, our PopWatch live blog of the Emmy ceremony and the painful E! pre-show, and much more coverage (updated all day Monday) at EW's Emmy HQ. Plus, after the jump, see what happened when The Office's John Krasinski and Lost's Evangeline Lilly got together at the Emmys to talk romance on their shows. Fun!

I love Micheal Emerson on LOST and I am sad he didn't win BUT he did lose to Mr. Ivanek, who truely is a great character actor. Therefore all is forgiven.

Hi. I on numerous occasions scan this forum. This is the oldest period unqualified to ask a topic.
How numberless in this forum are references progressive behind, knavish users?
Can I worthiness all the advice that there is?

The Wire- Snubbed again- but then it is about disadvantaged black people living in a forgotten city isnt it! the civil rights movement died with martin luther king!

Sam Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I'm glad Samantha Who? won an Emmy, but that Emmy should have gone to the amazing Christina Applegate. The supporting Emmy should have gone to either Vanessa Williams or Amy Poehler.

Api Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

I'm not going to give a s***t about Emmys next year.... I mean, have you seen Michael Emerson in LOST??? He's just perfect, perfect!!!!! The way he acts is amazing!! And LOST's 4 season was brilliant, with episodes like "The constant" and "the shape of things to come"... LOST won to Mad Men is SOOOO unfair, does anyone actually watches Mad Men??? BORING!!!!!!!! LOST is so unpredictable, emotional, with a great cast.... LOST and Emerson were robbed big time!!!!

Also, Hugh Lorie should win the Best Actor emmy, i'm amazed by his portrait of dr. house and now that he changed his team, he's the only reason why i watch house.

Truth Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 05:45 AM EST

It is nice to see someone in the mainstream media call attention to the sad state of Vanessa's loss! It is mind-boggling to me that she did not win last year and again this year. This isn't to take away from anyone else, but Wilhelmina has to be one of the wittiest, most outrageous characters ever to have graced the screen. And Williams deserves the Emmy. Here's hoping for next year! PS...GREAT write-up!

echo Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

I scared the hell out of our cat by screaming "YES!!!" when Brian Cranston won an extremely deserved Emmy for his work on Breaking Bad. I was convinced he wouldn't get the award, so I was delighted to see him win! For those of you out there that don't get AMC or don't watch Breaking Bad, find some way to see it! Brian Cranston does incredible work as a dying chemistry teacher who turns to making crystal meth in order to secure his family's financial future.
The Emmys are, sadly, predictably out of touch when it comes to what is awesome on TV; when they actually get it right, some rejoicing is in order.

Jimmy Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

kmy fav moment was Tina Fey everytime she was on stage I love her!

and Betty White getting a well deserved standing O the woman rocks is well into her 80s and dosent seem to be slowing down, maybe next yr they can get the golden girls ( the remainging ones) togerther to present something that'd be fantastic

MS. MURPHY Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

I am very angry and disappointed for
the fact that Tony Shaloub did not win for his role as Monk. That is the best show on TV, and he really should
won. Just about everyone on MySpace
has watching Monk on their profile in
the TV section. There must've been a mistake. Could we have a re-count?
I love Monk, and since I am for real
COD, he shows me how to handle a lot of things. There has been an injustice
I LOVE MONK!!! thank you,
MS. MURPHY

If we are going to discuss the number of people of color being numbered, let's not forget Sandra Oh! She's Korean. And Phylicia Rashad and America Ferrera. The first time ABC aired the episode she submitted, I knew that was going to be her Emmy bait. I know there aren't many people of color nominated but I don't blame the Emmys. The blame should be put on people who cast and produce the shows... they have the ability to choose who they want and they stick with what's mainstream - meaning White. There are tons of barriers that still need to broken down. However, there are shows/actors that deserve recognition like "Everybody Hates Chris."

dana Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

It's funny. The ratings seem to indicate that TWO AND A HALF MEN is the most popular sitcom on TV. But somehow they didn't win anything. The Emmy's used to be able true talent. Not parading the same people up there even if they aren't very good. Tina Fey doesn't even play a character. She plays herself. How did she win an acting emmy? Over Julia Louis Dreyfus AND Applegate? I don't take the Emmy's seriously. 30 Rock will lose steam this year. I hope Pushing daisies and New Christine get their chance after that.

anna Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

lewis walburn, you're an idiot who apparently believes whatever nonsense the wingnuts tell you. the rest of us like to use our own brains instead of letting others think for us.John McCain is a mere shell of who he used to be and has forsaken any honor he may have had in his quest for the white house. He picked the most wholly unqualified one in the running for VP in order to pander to women but if they took the time to look past the line of bull they're giving about her they'd see that it would be an incredibly insane and dangerous thing to put this person in the second highest office in the country. They are hiding her from the press because they know she can't handle tough questions, as she showed during the interview with Charlie Gibson, when they finally allowed her out from hiding. Her first meetings with foreign heads of state was also shielded from press. If she can't handle the press, how do they expect her to handle anything of importance? This country will be in deep if they win

lewis walburn Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY THOSE DIE HARD DEMOCRATES ,WHO WOULD VOTE FOR A DEAD HOG ,WANTS A PRESIDENT WHO WONT SALUTE OUR FLAG ,AND RIDDACUES THE NATHANIAL ANTHEM AND STILL BELIEVES IN THE CULT SHURCH HE ATTENDED FOR OVER 20 YEARS ,AND STILL BELIEVES IN IT,AND MOST LIKLY THE MUSLINS HAVE SUPPLIED HIS CAMPANGE MONEY

Loved the political satire. Need Stewart and Corell on prime time network as well as shows like "That Was The Week That Was' and The Smothers Brothers.

patrick berg Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

best moments for me were:
tommy smothers getting his just due and what a terrific speech

ricky gervais steve carrel crack me up

jon stewart steven colbert, are there another pair of fake newcasters that can do what these 2 can do...i dont think so.

say, maybe u could get jon stewart or stephen colbert or steve carell or ricky gervais to host next years show.

to Libby Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

OMG I was thinking the same thing! Not to be catty about MTM's arms but honey, women of a certain age need to start coverin' it up... I mean, there really are things the world does NOT want to see, and that was one of them. yikes!

Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I still cannot believe the Wire was not nominated for Outstanding Drama and did not win for writing

Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Not worthy of the time spent reading.

Chris G Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

don't even get me started on Laura Dern's shocking loss. I was pissssed. At least Recount won for best movie.

Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

**threatening

Stephanie T. Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Best momnets:
1.Don Rickles getting a standing ovation
2. Dick Martin/Laugh In 40th anniversary Tribute with Ruth Buzzi, Alan Seuss, Gary Owens, and Lilly Tomlin. However, Alan looked a bit out of sorts.
3. Ricky Gervais threating Steve Carrell. That was hillarious!!
4. Tommy Smothers honorary emmy award
Worst:
Josh Grobans television theme song montage.

colly Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

VANESSA WILLIAMS WAS ROBBED!!!!! BIG TIME!!!! I WAS SO HURT, I STARTED TO CRY!!!

Sarah Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

The Office didn't win any of it's nominations!! This is obviously a travesty.

Coach Taylor Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Never any love for Friday Night Lights. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Peter Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

To Kathy - please try to not state YOUR opinion as fact. In my opinion, Mad Men is the best show on TV. I always watch it and so do many people I know. Otherwise, I think the EMMYs are a joke.

June Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I know the award was already handed out at the creative arts ceremony, but Will Arnett should have won Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. I barely even remeber what Tim Conway was doing in the episode he won for, while Arnett's performance was just hilarious and I want to watch it over and over again.
But, we all know that he already should have won a while ago for something called "Arrested Development".

Jon Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

dude, i love tina fey and all, but come on, julia louis dreyfus deserved that award. and christina hendricks shpudve been nominated for best supporting actress drama for mad men. shes great and so is the show

Kathy Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

The Emmys are a BIG JOKE!! The Best & most loved shows are hardly ever winners!! Look at MadMen the producers spent so much money wine-ing
and dine-ing just about everybody trying to get a win for this show NOBODY watches, while more worthy shows get passed over. I don't care who wins top show. I will keep watching the BEST SHOWS: Burn Notice (USA) Dexter (SHO)etc....

JIM Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

The whole sense of "liberal lovefest" that permeated the entire evening. You knew that everyone was going to spill their political leanings since Nov. 4th is approaching - and you knew that McCain or Palin were going to be mocked to a thundering round of applause.

Woody7 Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Hey Snape! I am pretty sure Hugh Laurie didn't show up because he was ill, not because he is a sore loser.

Libby Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

Not a winner or loser per say irked me, but I was horrified at the state of Mary Tyler Moore's body. True, she has always been thin, but her hanging gobble gobble rail thin arms grossed me out

Nix Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

I always root for the serial killer to win.

Sally Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 07:26 AM EST

I had very few favorites in this year's Emmys, and not a single one of them won. I'm glad I started watching late. Looks like I didn't miss anything.

Did like Kathy Griffin presenting with Don Rickles. Highlight of the show for me. I don't like Kathy Griffin, but she got some points with me for her "Get Up!". And the audience lost a few points with me for not doing so automatically.

Erin Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

I thought the choice of hosts was pretty terrible. They should have brought back Conan O'Brien, he was an amazing host. But in terms of winners I was really pissed that Kristin Chenowith didn't win for Supporting Actress. Pushing Daisies is amazing and she's the best thing about it, thats saying a lot. I also think Dexter or Lost should have gotten some kind of recognition but both were shut out. Overall the show was just not as good as previous years.

Zach Reisfeld Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:32 AM EST

I was so happy to see Brian Cranston finally get the emmy he has deserved for so long and for what better a show than Breaking Bad, which he is incredible in. I hated how people were cut off by commercial breaks and um Kiefer Sutherland definitley got cut of almost entirely by a commercial.
oh and WTF is with the LOST snubs???

Brent Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

Mad Men deserved all the awards it won, and it deserved one more -- best actor for Jon Hamm. The show is "boring" only to people with the attention span of a puppy. (Bryan Cranston? Really?)

Neil Patrick Harris should have won. I like Jeremy Piven, but come on!

Thank God Vanessa Williams didn't win! Ugly Betty is one of the worst-written and acted shows on TV. Kristin Chenowith deserved the award, not Jean Smart.

I was happy for 30 Rock, but I hated to see The Office get slighted again. Ditto for Lost.

Blair Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

Man I thought last year's Emmy awards were awkward, but they didn't hold a candle to this year's! What were the producers thinking getting the five reality show hosts to do this when Ryan Seacrest sucked last year? Anyways I agree that Lost was absolutely robbed, especially when considering that The Constant was their entry and was AMAZING and emotional. I don't think any of the acting winners deserved it with the exception of Tina Fey. I don't know what they're problem was, but the entirety of the 60 year annivesary was horribly represented with the exception of Josh Groban - that was funny!

J.R. Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

I thought for SURE Two And A Half Men would sweep the awards with wins! How disappointing.

bootsycolumbia Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Audra MacDonald (sp?) not winning for A Raisin in the Sun was really disappointing. I thought she was even better than Phylicia Rashad in that movie. Lost not winning was a downer (even though I knew it was Mad Men's year, I'd have still liked to have seen Lost win). Jean Smart deserved that Emmy--she got screwed when she didn't win for 24, so good for her that she finally won. And I feel the same about Bryan Cranston. I've never seen Breaking Bad, but whenever I watched Malcolm in the Middle, it was always only to watch Bryan Cranston as the dad. I was always royally ticked that he never won an Emmy for that role, so I'm glad he finally got one. And Neil Patrick Harris should definitely have won for HIMYM. Jeremy Piven is turning into Tony Shalhoub or James Spader: winning year after year for the same role but not bringing anything new to the part.

olivia Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

So much time was wasted on the so-called opening number. The show was really rushed at the end. Poor Kiefer Sutherland and Tom Selleck (whose looking might sexy these days) had to rush through the most important awards of the night in order to finish on time. Announcing the reality host award took way too long and took time away from more important awards. Next year we need a hire a real host...alrighty?

Ed Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

I don't watch TV except for news and sports.

Jon Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

I don't like the winners for supporting actor and actress in a comedy. Neil Patrick Harris SHOULD have won. I'm so over Jeremy Piven already. He deserved his first Emmy. But three? Two is even iffy. Rainn Wilson and NPH should have won the last two years. As for the supporting actress, Jean Smart? Really? I thought Kristin Chenowith had it in the bag. But I would have been fine with a Vanessa Williams or Amy Poehler win. But Jean Smart? Really? And Amazing Race???? Again? I would have gone for Project Runway or even American Idol. I agree with Jeff Probst. He deserved it. So did Zeljko Ivanek.

pgv417 Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

how on EARTH is it possible that LOST submitted 'The Constant' (the second greatest Lost episode of all time, and one of the greatest hours of TV I have EVER seen in my life) and lost to Mad Men!??!

Is this a freaking joke???

Seriously. Emmy voters. Is. This. A. Joke.

I think all television fanatics everywhere should completely boycott the Emmys. This is nonsense.

Jeff Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

More Don Rickles...less prewritten crappy banter. They should ask him to host next year.

dikembe Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

the show itself was terrible...but in retrospect we should have saw that coming with the best shows not even nominated--the wire, friday night lights, battlestar gallactica, flight of the concords...come on!

Arlosmom Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

Awkward, that would be how I would describe the Emmy's last night. From the horrible group of reality hosts to the uninteresting acceptance speeches, to the uninspiring pairing of presenters (exception being Rickles/ griffith), this years show was the worst yet. Why not get one host that's actually funny (Conan,Kimmel, Whoopi, etc) and present the awards in some kind of order. I kept getting confused as to who was winning what award. Also, pair up unexpected people. Like Colbert and Oprah, Tracey Morgan and Candie Bergman. Do we have to see all the Desperate Housewives together on one stage to finally prove they really all do get along??? And Colbert with Stewart was predictable and lame. The only funny moment was Ricles and Griffith who both didn't follow the teleprompter.

MaryUtah Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

LOST had the best season since season one - it should have won!

Nance Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

Lots to love, lots to hate. My biggest disappointment was not seeing Neil patrick harris sing something from Dr. Horrible!

Jessica S Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

I was very happy that Mad Men won. Yes, I was rooting for Lost but if it had to lose then I'm glad it was to another show I love.

The biggest diss of the night? Buffy! I spent weeks voting for "The Gift" to win that Most Memorable Moments thing...and it did:) After refusing to bestow the best show ever with a smattering of statuettes, the Emmys also failed to recognize it last night. The winners (one for comedy, one for drama) were supposed to be announced during the telecast. I sat through that entire show to see it-when I would have normally given up after Michael Emerson lost. This is egregious...Anybody in agreement?

Kevin Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

Best Moment of the Night: Don Rickles winning! He has deserved the Emmy for so many roles, but was snubbed every single year.
As for Vanessa Williams: was not a huge snub, since Wilhemina is basically a mixture of her role on Soul Food, and Miranda Priestly from DWP. Vanessa brings NOTHING creative or original to her character.....and did NOT deserve the emmy.

Christina Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

I really thought it was Hugh Laurie's year. He is so clearly overdue, he submitted a fantastic tape, and I really doubted Spader would win again. I just really got my hopes up. And then when I found out Hugh would be absent because of the flu, I thought now that he isn't there he will win. I'm sad I was wrong. Now I doubt he will ever win. They only seem to like him enough to nominate him. I think it's ridiculous to not award an actor for playing an "unlikable" character. I even would have been happy to see Michael C. Hall win. I wanted Dexter or House for Drama, but Mad Men is a great show, so I'm not complaining. And Neil Patrick Harris should have won, not Piven. Robert Sean Leonard should have been nominated for Supporting Actor and Hugh Laurie should have won for Best Actor. Period. Not rewarding these two men is criminal. And they couldn't even do a small tribute to The Wire? But congrats to 30 Rock and Greg Yaittaines(sp?) for directing House's Head. This was a painful Emmys.

The Screwy Dame Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Dude!! Michael Emerson was ROBBED!! Can't believe he lost to Juliet's ex-husband. Doc Jensen - I think there's a theory in here somewhere!!

Sharlin Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

Yeah and 3 years in a row, Colbert looses to some old timer who should have won emmy's years ago. Come ON. Please don't turn into the Grammy's.

Sharlin Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

I immediately saw and episode of Mad Men after the Emmys since AMC was doing some sort of marathon... yeah BORING. How could it beat LOST! Especially with The Constant as its episode entry!!

Ann Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I'm sure Alec Baldwin is wonderful on 30 Rock as "caricature of Alec Baldwin," but no love for Lee Pace? Really?

AJ MacReady Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

The highlights were anything that didn't involve those five d-bag hosts.
And "squeee"? "L Yeah?" Good god, man. I would feel shame for you if not for the obvious fact that yours has been surgically removed.

CandyMaize Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

I agree with seattle_girl's 4 highlights. I actually enjoyed Josh Groban's performance though.
Neil Patrick Harris was robbed. There's no plainer way to say it. Nothing against Piven or any of the other nominees .. well, except for the fact that I obviously think NPH should've won.
I was thrilled with Zeljko Ivanek's win. (though I would've enjoyed John Slattery winning too)

Lydia Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

Boo-Hoo Tina Fey you make more per episode that most make in a year
so, why the "turkey burger" comment!!? Life is rough for overpaid actors!!

seattle_girl Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Highlights:
1. Tina Fey/Amy Poehler
2. Kristin Chenowith/Neil PH (Bitter, party of 2 - hehe)
3. Colbert, Stewart and the prunes (dump the rest of the never-ending political commentary, ugh)
4. Gervais (first 4 min, then it drug on)
The rest of it was either weird (Josh Groban's medley, huh?), disappointing (no Hugh again?) or just plain bad (the 5 hosts and Heidi's rip-away tuxedo).

Andrew Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

I don't know if the people who voted have ever seen Dexter. The last season of it (season 2) was easily the best season for any show. Every single week was a thrill as Dexter came closer to capture. What show has ever made you root for the serial killer to win? With the writers strike last year, I was sure Dexter would win something. It's a travesty they didn't.

Kaite Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

I love Piven, don't get me wrong. But 3 consecutive years? really? Ari hasn't changed, give someone else a chance. Like, maybe NPH!?
I'm totally glad Zeljko Ivanek won. Totally deserved it!!!
Bryan Cranston is pretty awesome, but where is the Hugh Laurie love, people?? He's been awesome forever, why has no one piked up on this!?

snape! Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

okay the emmys are so not fair Lost didnt win ANYTHING and Hugh Laurie didnt even bother to show up because he knew they were gonna suck. OH and can i please get a little love for ralph fiennes people??? jeez was he even there either? i think only like 4 people actually came, and they were the "hosts". if you could call them that

salemor Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

who cares about tv! didn't even watch the emmys

Zach Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Right on, Slezak. Smart winning was stupid when competish was Williams & Poehler, both of whom make me laugh and actually play characters. What was with MTM not getting a standing O but Betty White mustering the crowd? I was happily surprised for Probst, but then Survivor invented the genre and I was happy not to see Seacrest win for a lackluster season (it was Bergeron's year). Chandra Wilson's loss was criminal; her witty, emotionally gripping turn is everything the Emmys (and TV watching) are supposed to be all about. Welcome to the Little Leagues, Dianne Wiest, you no-show! And Piven winning three is a bit much (thank goodness no Boston Legal repeats this year!), and sad when Rainn Wilson and Sean Hayes are much funnier (and only have 1 award between the 2 of them). But at least he made up for it by criticizing the hosts' stupid monologue. Sketched bits were bad; Groban awkward; Laugh-In cute if long; Rickles stole show; Oprah unprepared; Julia LD had the line of the night!

Solsbury Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Watch Episode 3, "...and the Bags in the River," and tell me that isn't a powerful performance.

Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

No Michael Emerson? No way! Insanity.

Kali Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

I cannot begin to describe all of the dissapointment that the emmy's were this year. I will mention a few. If they are going to cut out some of the best awards, then give the award winners more time to accept their award rather than playing music during a 70 year olds speech. Also, if they cut out even 1/3 of the pitiful banter that the writers call comedy, they could have made enough room to add the tv's most memorable moments. I'm tired of great shows such as Joss Whedon's Buffy and David Crane's Friends getting snubbed because the writers feel they must make the presenters ramble on. It is time shows such as those get the attention they deserve. One last thing...Stop trying to turn an awards show into your own political advertisment. It's rather rediculous.

Solsbury Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Bryan Cranston sooooooooo deserved to win.

Neener, I'm wondering which interviews you have listened to or read, because, as an avid House fan, I have been following HL in his interviews and I have not heard him say any of these words. He is extremely brilliant and hilarious when he speaks, a pleasure to listen to.On the other hand, the Daily Mail frequently reports the same news about the man's depression, his problems with the American accent and, when they have nothing else to write about, his thinning hair. This, I think, is your primary source of information.

I don't watch a lot of the nominated shows, so I can't say if the winners are undeserving, but I wish The Office would have gotten more love.
Who I would liked to have see win:
-The Office
-Steve Carell (or Lee Pace)
-Chandra Wilson
-Neil Patrick Harris (he is seriously so awesome! But Rainn Wilson would have also been good)

I have to say that I loved the Ricky Gervais/Steve Carell bit. It was hilarious!

Peter Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

What is "Mad Men"? Sorry I never heard of it before last night.Seems to me the problem is there is just so little from which to choose! Too bad the days of M*A*S*H, All in the Family, and The Waltons are so long gone !

Isabel Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Hugh Laurie is amazing. His show hasn't been amazing lately though. He should have won when he was nominated a few years back. He was snubbed then. Bryan Cranston deserved it this year. I didn't agree with most of the winners. But Cranston and Mad Men were spot on. I didn't agree with anybody that won for comedy. I like Stephen Colbert a great deal-- even though I'm a conservative and not his target audience. But I agree that Conan O'Brien is a sure thing. He's mostly unbiased. His show isn't soaked in politics. He's wonderful. I would have been thrilled to see Conan win something. I also agree that he should have hosted. He was amazing last time.

Mia Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Excuse my typo in the last post.

Felicia Rashad had won for her role in A Raisin in the Sun.. she was awesome in it. Hugh Laurie should also have won for his role in House.

Mia Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

I wish Felicia Rashad had one for her role in A Raisin in the Sun.. she was awesome in it. Hugh Laurie should also have won for his role in House.

elizabeth Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

my biggest objections are jeremy piven and tina fey. predictable choices and they are not outstanding. tina fey is a brand name now. i'm not saying this because she's been sick recently, but christina applegate does an oustanding job on her new show. i wouldn't want to see her win out of sympathy. but she is surprisingly talented on her show. julia louis dreyfus of course earns every award she gets. she was a good sport about losing and then being referenced in fey's speech. im sick of the daily show winning the talk show category. that biases nonsense show sucks. conan o'brien is a genius and got snubbed big time

bimpski Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

So Neener, you are saying this is a popularity contest and has nothing at all to do with the actual quality of the work being produced?

I think there are some other winners last night that might take offense to that (Mr. Cranston for one).

And you are also saying the David Shore and Katie Jacobs and TPTB are cowering, spineless, wimps that are too weak and afraid to take control of their own production?

I'm sorry but David Shore has never given me that impression, in fact just the opposite.

I think they know that even when Hugh is at those moment of being riduculously perfectionistic they know that although it is rough, the end result is worth it.

To me it is refreshing to see an actor putting so much care into his work. Not settling for second best just because he can. That is what is called integrity. I guess that's not a popular thing in Hollywood.

And how do you know what was said by on the set last fall? Do you believe everything you read?

heidi Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Julia Louis Dreyfuss deserved the emmy! She's an expert comedienne. She delivers every time. Tina Fey is not the highlight of her own show. Sorry. She's boring. The characters around her shine brighter. I love Alec Baldwin's character but I think Lee Pace from Pushing Daisies should have won. He's a great actor. I realize Pushing Daisies is a very subtle comedy but it's still brilliant. It wasn't acknowledged properly. Hugh Laurie deserved an emmy a few years ago. Brian Cranston deserved it this year. He was so humble. I loved him so much in Malcolm in the Middle.

Bethann Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

For me the biggest snub was Neil Patrick Harris once again being passed over for his portrayal of Barney Stinson. He is consistantly hysterical and even though his character is a slimeball, he has just enough heart that you still love him in the end. Jeremy Piven was probably given the strongest story lines on "Entourage"'s miserable season, but it was still a generous gift for him to get that Emmy.

Emilia Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Conan O'Brien should have won best variety show, and best writing for a variety show. He also should have hosted. Pushing Daisies should have won best comedy show. Julia Louis-Dreyfus should have won best actress for comedy. Lee Pace should have won best actor. I'm glad Mad Men won best drama. I was also happy to see Bryan Cranston win best actor. He was so gracious and surprised. Overall, the winners were disappointing. I don't like Tina Fey anymore. I'm over her.

C C Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Outside of Mad Man winning Drama Series and Writing for a Drama Series (five years from now everyone will look back and see how undeserved they were), I was pretty happy with who got Emmys. What's funny is I knew that Breaking Bad would get a major Emmy, but I was expecting it to come in Directing. And I was expecting House to recieve an Emmy either in Drama Series or in Lead Actor in a Drama. Well, I was sort of on the right track. Breaking Bad's Emmy came in Lead Actor and House's Emmy came in Directing.

DanOregon Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

While I wouldn't have had a problem with some of the other folks winning, I defy you to say Cranston or Ivanic were unworthy after seeing their shows. My biggest beef is Piven winning again. Give me a break.

DM Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

Does anyone realize that Sam Waterston from L&O gets snubbed every year? He plays McCoy with such grit and intensity and has for so long. He is ADA Jack McCoy. One of the best characters in the history of TV.

Heather Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

It's bad enough NPH lost, but to loose to Jeremy Piven? Double harsh. And can Hugh Laurie please win something? And I would have loved to see Cheno win it.

S Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

The best part was the photoshop of Conan O'Brien and Angelina Jolie with all the kids for the writers nomination for comedy, variety or musical show. That was priceless!

Four Leaf Clover Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

I'm almost glad Lost didn't win anything. It's just too good for the Emmys. I don't understand how a show that is so intricate, complex, intelligent, emotion-packed, and ridiculously layered as Lost can lose after coming off a fantastic season. Ugh.

Then there's Emerson. What a crying shame. Man got robbed at gunpoint. No justice people, no justice!

peaches Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Mad Men deserved best drama but the ladies of Mad Men should have been nominated as well. I love Jean Smart but this should have been Vanessa's year.

Marilyn Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Amy Poehler was robbed! Amy Poehler was robbed! Vanessa Williams cannot hold a a candle to the sweetheart of SNL! The EW editors thought Amy should win, the EW readers poll thought Amy should win. I say it again...Amy Poehler was robbed!

On the drama side...Michael C. Hall was robbed too! He as Dexter is pure genius....Mad Men gets tedious, but Dexter never fails to impress. Michael C. Hall...we love you!

Cory Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

Also, Lost was robbed. I wanted either Lost or Dexter to win Best Drama, and I also wanted Michael C. Hall to win Best Actor in a Drama.

Cory Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Pretty much no one I wanted to win actually did. I like Jean Smart, but I wanted Kristen Chenowith to win. Also, I wanted Lee Pace, Neil Patrick Harris, Michael Emerson, and either Sandra Oh or Chandra Wilson to win.

simpsonite Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

The only award that made me truly smile was Barry Sonnenfeld for directing "Pushing Daisies." It's a unique show (unusual these days) and very clever and fun to watch. It deserved more Emmy love. Disappointments were Hugh Laurie(when is he going to get an Emmy already) and anything Lost.

cndwelch Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

Wow, worst Emmy's ever! LOST!!! House!!! NPH! all should have won. I just don't get it.

banco Bantu Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

After they had the cops chase the black choir off the stage during the Josh Groban segment and i picked my tongue off the floor from my anger I turned the channel. The Emmys are officially the b-S award show of hollywood.

DL Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Even though it's completely irrational, I was bitter about NPH losing to Piven again until I watched this week's Entourage- possibly my favorite over-the-top Ari performance.

Heather Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Laurie still didn't get the Emmy but I was pleased that Cranston did. Good for him.

Jeff Probst? Did you see his repartee with Mandel? Most annoying thing of the night.

Also I am very very mad that Piven won again. Next year, I should hold a chant around NPH related merch and pray he wins, if nominated.

ouch Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Snubs: Micahel Emerson. His performance this year was flawless. When you play a character that is a villian, but he is so ambiguous that you don't really know where he stands. That is acting. Ben Linus will go down as one of the best villians in television history. This snub is unforgetable...

Now LOST: was it snubbed? Yes, LOST should have won the emmy, but at the same time Mad Men is another fabulous show, albeit its nowhere near to LOST level of greatness... But it won simply due to the fact that it was the new shiny-cool show in the emmys that had "buzz" around it. I am glad of its win, but at the same time LOST deserved it.

NPH... you were snubbed.

The Wire: It's pretty obvious the emmys do not like you. YOur snub alone pretty much ruins the credibility of the Emmys...

Michael C. Hall... ouch. i really wanted you to win. But the Emmys are still a little Old Fashioned... {see: Mad Men win}

john Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

tom bergeron got robbed - the other hosts basically repeat their established repartee where tom is constantly improvising and being really funny while being a classy host; am really happy bryan cranston was recognized in his little but terrific show!
