Who would you pick to succeed David Letterman?

Sep 4, 2008, 04:22 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Television

Lettermanstewart_l David Letterman rarely grants interviews, so Rolling Stone's lengthy new Q&A with the Late Show host has been getting a lot of media attention, especially for Dave's unexpected expression of empathy for Jay Leno. (Dave takes one more whack at the GE pinheads who booted him in favor of Leno back in the day, and who've now given Leno the same unceremonious ouster in favor of Conan O'Brien. He also effectively invites Leno, to whom Dave turned a cold shoulder after he lost the Tonight Show job in 1992, to be a guest on Late Show as soon as his Tonight stint ends next May.) You can read an excerpt of the interview here, in which Dave discusses some of his more memorable guests. But none of this stuff is what intrigued me the most about what Letterman had to say.

Buried at the bottom of this New York Times summary of the interview is a remark from Letterman about his own not-too-distant retirement. While he expects to stay at least until 2010 but not much longer (my guess is he'll retire in 2012 -- that'll give him an even 30 years in late night, the same as his idol, Johnny Carson), he believes that CBS' transition to a new 11:30 host won't be as messy as NBC's have been. Asked who'll succeed him, he says, "I don’t know this for a fact, but I have a feeling that all of that has been taken care of or discussed."

Really? Does that mean CBS has already picked Dave's successor? If so, who do you suppose it is? At the top of CBS' wish list would have to be Jon Stewart; I hope that's not the case. I like The Daily Show too much to lose him there; besides, he still doesn't excel at interviewing guests, as Letterman does. I'd love to see CBS move Craig Ferguson up from 12:30 -- not only does he do great interviews, but he also has the best monologue in late night (watch some of them here, listed under "Show and Tell"), and he's even been beating Conan lately in the ratings (and Conan would be his competition again by the time Dave departs). Then again, there's one seasoned candidate whose datebook may be completely open in 2012 or whenever: Jay Leno.

Who do you think CBS should hire to replace Letterman? And who do you think the network actually will hire?

UPDATE: NBC informs me that, despite some Ferguson victories over Conan, O'Brien's Late Night frequently beats Craig's Late Late Show in the ratings, most recently, last week (when Ferguson was in reruns). Duly noted.

Craig Ferguson. The man is hilarious. He is the rightful successor and he's earned it. I would hope that Letterman wouldn't let CBS do to Craig what NBC did to him.

Ray Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

No contest...Craig Ferguson !! He's on very late in the east and I TiVo the man every night. He is the most hilarious guy on tv and his interviews are great and usually very funny and relaxed.

And by the way, if you caught his 9/11 show a few weeks ago and his voter registration rant a few nights ago, you would be convinced that he's not just a great talent but a damn good guy to boot

dude Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

i would really like conan, i dont want the show to leave newyork, and i think conan has somewhat the same delivery as dave 15 years ago.

Kathy Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

I have been a daily watcher of Craig since the day he started. I absolutely love his show ITS FANTASTIC! I KNOW! He truly is the best on late night TV and must take over for Dave.

Gretchen Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

I would love for it to be Craig Ferguson! He is the absolute best! Although, in a perfect world, if Craig got the Late Show, he would do it from the same studio he's in now. I like his West Coast humor better than the East Coast humor Dave does.

Chris Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I'd love to stop paying for DVR service which I have just to watch Craig Ferguson at 12:30pm!
He's far and away the best thing on TV and even more hilarious in person. I've got my tickets for his Town Hall stand-up in NYC in November and can't wait!!

Jacqueline Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:07 AM EST

Craig Ferguson is a real cool dude. Think he should put his earring back in Maybe a diamond might be nice definatly not anything dingle dangley. He should chill out a bit and grow up and when Leno retires he goes for that job. He is too poor and Bob Barker doesn't look after him so he should change to another network. lol poor man Jacline

gale graves Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 10:32 PM EST

I believe without a doubt that Craig Ferguson is the most talented, whitty, unique, and intelligent man for the job. He is handsome, fun to watch and a great interviewer. Brings a fresh interview technique. His accents and character skits are light years above the rest. Monologue is the absolute best...true art.

ChocKisses Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

Someone mentioned Whoopi for late night. She used to be on latenight with her own show. It's been quite a while, but I remember it.
I'm a big fan of Ferguson, so my vote's with him!

Midge Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

I miss Johnny! Could we dig him up and give him a chair and a desk? Ok Ok I'll give Craig Ferguson my serious vote.

Glisten Garbor Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Joel McHale is very funny on his E show..I've never seen him outside of his comfort zone..but I do like what I have seen of him..Ferguson though is the best..

Paul Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

I think Craig Ferguson is very funny but it scares me a bit that my wife is seriously hot for him. Then again, if his show is over an hour earler, I may benefit if he takes over for Letterman.

Bruce Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Anyone but Craig Ferguson. His show is awful.

Stephanie T. Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Dave Foley, Joel McHale, Lenny Henry or Chris Rock. Ferguson is a riot, but if he gets promoted to an earlier time, what's going to be on later?

JWALL Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

They need to get Dave Chappelle to fill in. It's not like he's doing that much right now anyways....
Chris Rock would be awesome too!

Snsetblaze Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

I like the Whoopi idea. Why does it have to be a guy, white or otherwise? I watched Craig Ferguson the other night b/c Nathan Fillion was on. I have watched him occasionally. His monologue is funny but I thought his interviews were terrible.
But if you want to stick withthe cranky white guy - how about Lewis Black?

ah Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

I think that it would be a mistake for Jon Stewart to leave TDS. There's no way he'd be able to do what he does on Comedy Central on CBS.

Mike Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

How about Chris Rock! We have 6 late night shows on the 3 big networks and all the hosts are white. How about some diversity in late night. Chris Rock is young and funny!

Dan Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

Stephen Colbert. Make it happen CBS.

Arsenio Billingham Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

What about a brotha? Craig Robinson would be hilarious, assuming his film career doesn't take off (which I expect it will, soon). Of course, we're talking about CBS here, the whitest network of all time, but still, let's think outside the "white male" box for a second.

? Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

Jon Stewart! Although, I would hate to have him off The Daily Show : (

LMB Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

How can you say Jon Stewart doesn't excel in interviewing guests? Sure, he doesn't do the celebrity interviews well but that is because he doesn't really care about them - which he has admitted.
Leave Stewart on The Daily Show so the politicians and blowhards are still held accountable.

Suzanne Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

Oh, please. It HAS to be Craig Ferguson. He's so appealing and, while I like Jon, I think he's turned off half the country with his liberal politics. Craig is extremely intelligent too and I think an earlier show would give him a chance to shine in a whole new way.

Eunice Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

Well, I'm pushing for Craig Ferguson. The man is a good interviewer and he is funny. He really does do great monologues.

I also want to push Steve Carell. He's known, he's funny (given the right material), and he's worked with celebrities. I think he'll do a great job.

Don't take away Jon Stewart from The Daily Show! That's his tower, don't tear it down.

queen of disrepair Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 07:25 AM EST

Move Craig to 11:30 and give Whoopi her own late-night talk show so that The View will finally roll over and die.

Don Barton Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

Don't replace ..take them both off. They are not funny, not funny. Crude, hateful, rude, doopy, disrespectful to the President and my Country. Carson was funny, neither could hold his jock-strap.
Don

Nathan Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:11 AM EST

Jay Leno!

annie Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:56 PM EST

Any ugly idiot that has a 4th grade education and has no feelings for his fellow man. It's made Dave a fortune.

Miss B Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

My first pick would be Jon Stewart. For me he is always on the ball with his guests. My second choice would be Craig Ferguson for Dave's job and the person I would want to take Craig's place on his show is The Daily Show's Jon Oliver. I think he would be a perfect replacement for Craig.

Nadine Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

Craig Ferguson has my vote to replace Letterman!

lulu Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

Craig of course! He humor if fresh and refreshing!

Janet Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

YES, Craig Ferguson!!! And he should bring that picture of Paul McCartney!

F Plecas Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

I would like to see anyone take his place. I NEVER LIKED HIS SHOW ANYWAY.

Rosie Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

CRAIG FERGUSON... He's the funniest man ever.

lei Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Craig Ferguson!!! We watch his show every night at 9:30 pm (on the west coast from a Detroit station) and every night its witty, funny and fresh. Conan adn every other talk show looks blah by comparison. Even with new shows starting we are not missing 9:30 with Craig!

Dottie Gilder Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

ANYONE.....he must be stupid if he thinks talking to your kid for 5 minutes about birth control will keep them from getting pregnant. You can watch them 24-7 and if they wish to indulge in sex they surely will.

Arwen Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

Craig Ferguson, of course, is the only logical successor! ; )

sam Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

Craig Ferguson, the funniest man on TV. And maybe they would finally pay him what he is worth!

crabbie Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

Sarah Palin.

Ilana P Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

What about the hilarious Joel McHale from the Soup? Or even Jimmy Kimmel--he's hilarious! in all these discussions no one seems to remember him!

JCHENNEN Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Craig would be King of late night shows....much better than that weird hairdu conan..conan is a huge fake and
his opening is the worst of all stand ups...his jumping is childish and his act is same as first year. Craig is a natural

Meli Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

I wonder if Dave saying a little past 2010 (like 2012) isn't his anointing of Craig? I figure since Stewart's contract with Comedy Central runs out in 2010 they'd have him locked down with a brand new long-term contract before the old one expires.

Ilana P Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

Rahul Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

I think Jon Stewart would be a great choice, but finding someone who could fill Dave's shoes completely is not going to happen.

Melinda65 Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

I would love for Craig to move to Dave's spot, because he's always funny, and his interviews are entertaining. Now, if Brian Williams weren't anchoring the news on NBC, I'd vote for him, but I'm not so sure that he wants to make that career move.

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Joel Mchale, he would be amazing. Im sure networks would be weary of hiring him since he has made a career out of making fun of celebrities who aptly deserve to be made fun of. He would be so good though.

Liddy Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Craig in 2012 baby. He always makes mee giggle :-)

Bob Saget Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Jon Stewart doesn't excel at interviews the way David Letterman does? ARE YOU INSANE??? Have you ever even watched The Daily Show? Honestly I never found Letterman that funny and I can't wait till he's gone. I'd like Joel Mchale to replace him.

AA Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

*matter (oops)

AA Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Actually, it doesn't mstter to me who they choose to replace Dave. When he's gone, so am I.

Stef Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I love Craig Ferguson as the choice. I hate that here in Houston the local affiliate shows Letterman, Frazier (yes, an old rerun of Frazier) then Ferguson. I'd love to be able to see Ferguson at an earlier hour. He is probably the best late night host in television right now. He's years ahead of Jimmy Fallon, who will end up cracking himself up and no one else. I agree that Jon Stewart does wonders over at The Daily Show and I would worry that out of sheer force of habit The Late Show would have too many political references brought over with Stewart. Please let it be Ferguson!

Ep Sato Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

I was hoping for the return of Pat Sajak. Who'll need Ambien when the cure for insomnia's right there on tv?

How about Steve Carrell? I know he's currently got a real career, but he seems really warm, charming, and capable of getting celebs to act silly.
