David Blaine's Dive of Death: I don't get it

Davidblaine_l During my lunch break today, I decided to walk up to Wollman Rink in Manhattan’s Central Park to check out David Blaine’s latest stunt. I have better things to do with my time, to be sure, but I’ve always been curious about David Blaine: Not in that “Oh, he’s so amazing” way, but in that “What is this guy’s deal?” way. Apparently, I’m not the only cynic around. I overheard a few middle-aged ladies walking ahead of me, saying, “He’s just doing a stupid stunt; he’s not a magician.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. And it isn’t a matter of stripping Blaine of his magician-ship, it’s that this particular event — Blaine suspended upside down, in the air, for 60 hours, the two-hour finale of which will be aired on ABC tomorrow night — is not magical. It’s a stunt. For publicity. (In the last 24 hours, I’ve received at least four press releases about the event.)

Before you call me a hater, this was the scene at the rink: Scaffolding everywhere, people snapping pictures, at least seven camera crews standing by for a press conference, security guys in suits with Secret Service-like earbuds, and red rope separating the public from Blaine. Meanwhile, the stuntman was not hanging. Nope.

More on David Blaine's stunt after the jump...

When I got there, Blaine was taking a break. He was thirsty. And it was time for the doctors on hand to check his vital signs. So there he was: standing upright, drinking bottled water. There was no diving and no death (though the former, which is supposed to be some sort of 44-foot plunge, is to take place tomorrow). One guy on his lunch break said to his friend, “Dude gets water breaks?” while another man nearby said, “It doesn’t count [if he isn't doing it continuously]. I could do that.”

Finally, after 15 minutes or so, Blaine went back to being upside-down. There wasn’t much to see. He just hung. If you recall Christo’s Central Park installation The Gates in 2005, the saffron flags just hung too, sometimes fluttering in the breeze, but at least the latter was sort of mesmerizing. One young woman standing next to me was just as perplexed: “He’s just going to hang there?” Eh, yep.

After checking Blaine’s vitals, Dr. Massimo Napolitano (who was asked by the network producer to be a “scientific adviser”) held a press conference. I’m paraphrasing here, but this is basically what he said: "David is doing very well. His vital signs are stable. This is an incredible feat for the body. Don’t underestimate what he’s doing. He was sort of sluggish last night. He has to urinate against gravity, which is not good for the kidneys." You don’t say. The doc said he should be checked on every hour, because this stunt needs a lot of monitoring -- which in my mind sort of defies the meaning of a spectacular act, doesn’t it? There’s no need to worry about Blaine’s ongoing exposure to the sun, either: When it gets to be too much, Blaine’s harness is lowered so that an umbrella man can protect him from the rays. Seriously.

I suspect Blaine needs attention to subsist (both mentally and financially) — and I’m not saying this to be a jerk, but perhaps I’ve failed to understand Blaine. On the surface, this stunt doesn’t prove much of anything, except that maybe Blaine is improving his stamina for all things physically counterintuitive. Simply put, this stunt is not motivated by passion. If you want to see passion, go check out Man on Wire, which is still playing at some theaters. It’s a documentary about French high-wire artist Philippe Petit, whose dream it was to walk on a wire strung between the Twin Towers. It was on his wish list for about six-and-a-half years before his team actually planned out how they would illegally gain access to the roof of the towers and then rig the wire. It took eight months to map it out, but on August 7, 1974, they prevailed: Petit walked, danced, and even lay down on a wire suspended 1,350 feet in the air. He did not alert the press. He did not have a two-hour primetime special. Doctors weren’t there checking his vital signs, advising him that this could be the ultimate Dive of Death. He just did it -- a true stunt, and for those who saw it, a magical one at that.

Did it ever occur to you or any of you that maybe for being suspended up side down for a period of time can have an affect on the brain? And as for it's just for the lime light nonsense he first started out as david blaine STREET magic he started on the street. I doubt he walked up to a camera crew and asked them to follow him around he was noticed for OBVIOUS reasons. Can't anyone enjoy things anymore or always try to find a reason not too. The only waste* is the stuff yours saying. If you really had better things in life to do you would've taken the time to write about something you enjoy or love instead of knocking down lose who live thier passion.

Truthfully,
A Disappointed teen.

I think a lot of people are completely missing the point of WHY David Blaine actually does what he does. Whether a fan or not, check out this post: it offers some great insight!

Elma Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

I think you guys are ridiculous. If you don't like him, don't watch him. You try hanging up there for 60 hours. It's humanly impossible. He puts on a show and he entertains. In case you forgot he held his breath for 17 + minutes. Ya'll try doing THAT!!! He is an endurance artist and he creates art (images) that will withstand time.

Chris Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:05 AM EST

Actually, I don't watch what he does. But I here about it a lot on the news, online, etc. And from what I hear, he is an idiot. He pretty much lied to everybody and disspointed everyone [except, apparently, you.]

David Blaine FAN!! Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 04:06 AM EST

I you people think you can do what David Blaine does please do. You are all haters. And if you dont like what he does dont watch, is not so hard.
David is great and he is only human. Så please can you all just shut up.

nonya business Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

To the writer of this article:
wow, you are a hater. his stunt was to HANG(take that word HANG into consideration)Upside down. no one demanded "YOU" to go see him HANG and if you really had better things to do you would not have gone.

A Magician Named GOB Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Thanks for the heads up, Sheriff. Time to buy stock in tomatoes. I once saw David Copperfield make a woman's wedding ring move from a table to an hourglass 20 feet away, and the ring was wrapped around the narrow part of the hourglass. I consider that an illusion because it's physically impossible (but very entertaining!). Blaine, on the other hand, appears to do things that are difficult. Note the difference. It's still an illusion - he doesn't really catch bullets in his mouth or go without water for 40 days or hang upside down for 60 hours straight. Whether he makes it easier (like breaks from hanging upside down), or whether it's fake altogether (like the cup with a charge in it to mimic a bullet), it's an illusion. And because it doesn't seem as impossible as the Copperfield trick, people don't think as critically and are more willing to accept it as real. If he gets a heart transplant on live TV and it looks a lot like ER, it's probably because they're using the same tricks.

Erik Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

I found this pretty much lame. He hung upside down for a little bit. Then he had a nice slow glide down with a bungee. I just don't understand. He is exciting when he does his street magic. Card trick and stuff like that. The stuff he has been doing is more like stunts and not magic. I still like him but he should call himself a stuntman instead of a magician.

dave Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

wasted 2 hours of my life watching this "stunt". I was a big fan of david blaine but will probably never watch one of his "stunts" again! just aweful.

Kevin Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

It's sort of funny how many people say they hate him and then say they went down to Central Park to see him! All the street magic in the special was awesome and I can't wait to see what he does next. I'm sure it'll be something crazy to make up for this. He explained what went wrong on Regis & Kelly this morning.

OH, C'MON! That was one of the greatest illusions of all time! Sure, we all saw the cord, but what was it ATTACHED to?! MAGIC! Sure, we saw him bobbing up and down with a not-so-bright look on his face before he was finally dragged away like a drowned cat, but why couldn't we see him once he was off camera and the lights went out?! Magic! The Pledge: I will hang upside-down like an idiot for 60 hours nonstop, except of course for all the many, many stops! The Turn: the dive of death, which will bear an uncanny (dare I say magical?) resemblance to an elementary school production of Peter Pan gone awry! The Prestige: I will reappear on the next season of The Real World, where I will dazzle my roommates with the greatest rigged juvenile card tricks of all time! I, for one, do not regret watching your amazing program. Thank you, David, for one of the most hilarious blunders in network TV history. We may never see it surpassed, and therein lies the true magic of David Blaine!

Casey Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

ABC just made an announcement that they were shocked to see the debacle that was David Blaines Dive of Death. Executives at ABC are reportedly looking into legal action against him for misrepresentation. ABC has scheduled a press conference this afternoon to publicly apologize for this event. Looks like ABC isn't to amused by David Blaine blatant lack of professionalism and integrity in this matter. David Blaine was reported to have told some producers and staff at the event last night that it was his show and he would do what he wanted, he was very rude and reportedly high on some controlled substance. We can only hope that he hasn't hurt his career with this stunt.

The Truth Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

Damn.... I actually made my girl stay up to watch that last night. I was like, if you don't believe in magic, you will after this. I mean how do you bend a quarter, how do you move treasury marks on real money? If this stunt would have never went wrong I would have never known. I would have never went on the computer to find out what went wrong, and I would have never found the link to the page that tells you all about it. For that I thank David Blaine, and am going to use his foul up for my publicity. I poster the link to his "tricks" on my myspace. Listen to my songs and then check out the secrets to his "magic" just type a slash IanTrue after the dot com on myspace.

ROFL Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

For those of you who want to know what happened in Central Park there are some youtube videoes. People say he was lifted up by black balloons and then cabled across the park behind where all the people were standing.

ManhattanLady Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

This "Death Dive" was obviously a stunt that went horrifically wrong. I am sure DB is quite chagrined. I doubt if his cables were supposed to have been exposed to the public, making his dive look like a rather tame bungee jump. Instead of the evening being his night of entelechy, he did indeed look like Geraldo on the night he opened Capone's vault. I am surprised the media has not more widely picked up on this fiasco. It was confusing to the anouncer, so maybe the "what the?" will allow the "stunt gone awry" to fade away... and DB's career won't suffer. He knows what happened and I am sure he is crestfallen, no matter what his payday. It's about "hubris."

Tom Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

I thought the show was excellent. David Blaine always puts on a good show and shows us why he is one the best in the world.

It would have been more entertaining taking a $hit then watching his last bs he claims was a illusion. What was so good about it? He didnt hang upside down for 60 hours. He was caught each hour standing upright. Then the final stunt. Was the stunt that impressive? You get paid to be on tv to hang from a bungee cord? Come on now people booed all night cause you failed and didnt do what you said you would do. Once again more people would have been impressed to watch that bungee break or for you to take a $hit upside down then instead of you floating away on balloons attached to a crane. You just ruined your gig with abc with your dive of shame.

In the 1970's we had Evel Knevel jumping over 50 busses on a Harley that was never meant to jump anything, risking life, breaking limbs over and over again....,cut to 2008...we have David Lame.....hanging upside down in a park (yawn) and getting up every hour to sit up and be checked by a doctor. Get the picture...the times we live in really suck.

I didnt get it either. You know what he should have done? He should have just had a 2 hour, or 1 hour tv program with him doing street magic, and doing things like taking the punch, and visiting those neighborhoods. That stuff was amazing and very entertaining and make you sit there wondering how he did it.

I was robbed. I didn't want to see a man die on TV, but seriously, "Dive of Death" hardly lived up to the expectations. The only impressive thing (or magic) is that Blaine does not have paruresis.
