'Burn Notice' recap: Left hanging 'til January

Sep 19, 2008, 10:47 AM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Categories: 'Burn Notice', Mini TV Watch

Burnnotice_l Yesterday's half-season finale delivered high action (that fab motorcycle chase), great guests (24's John Allen Nelson and Law & Order's Larry Clarke), two character returns (Nate and Carla), a love triangle (Campbell/Fiona/Mike), and some choice Sam quips ("You gotta love it when you tail someone to a place that makes a great mojito"). My only gripe: Not enough closure. I expected cliff-hangers like Mike diving off his front stairs as the loft burst into flames and the screen faded to black, or Nate going to lockup under a Carla-fabricated laundering charge and Fiona continuing to date clueless Campbell. But I hoped to at least learn Carla's true identity and what deadly hijinks she's got up her sleeve (or in her tankini, pictured).

Following last week's revelation that sniper Bill was another of Carla's pawns, Mike and Sam tracked him to a bayside building, where he used episode 2's forged access card to gain entry. Later, while Bill chilled on the Daytona club circuit (mentally preparing for Carla's killing mission, Sam presumed), Mike risked life and limb to sneak in and figure out that Bill's target must be someone riding the daily ferry that passes by the fourth floor conference room window. Then he and Sam stalked Carla (or as the latter calls her, "the burn notice lady" and "tall, blond, and evil") to a fancy-pants hotel where she did a lot of sexy swimming. Whatever she's up to is apparently "big," because between breaststrokes she conducted several poolside meetings with "international types" and installed a facial recognition security system outside her room -- which, of course, Sam found a way to use his masculine wiles to help Mike break into. There Mike discovered a dossier packed with photos of himself, Bill, dead forger Nefzi, sad sack hacker Jimmy (who's now Jimmy Barrett on Mad Men, btw), and one unfamiliar face (another operative maybe?), but no other clues.

Carla, of course, blew her top when she realized Mike had been in the building. ("There are things in the works that are far, far over your head. Stay out of them, or there will be consequences.") When he didn't back off, she retaliated by having Nate arrested -- which may cause Madeleine (who took out a loan to help sonny start his limo business) to lose her bungalow. She also lured Michael, Sam, and Fiona on a fake stakeout, while vaporizing Bill (so much for his sniper skills) and planting explosives in Michael's house. Which makes me wonder: If she knew Mike was eventually heading home to certain death, why did she follow him so fervently? Did she think he was going to Bill's first? Was she going to chat with him first or kill him herself?

More importantly, on the burn tip, we're left wondering what it all means. Who is the unknown man in Carla's file (whom she met with during the episode)? Who's going to be on that ferry that's worth stealing a Dragunov to kill? And once it's all over, will Mike get his job back?

Speaking of jobs, Mike's P.I. gig for the week had more to do with teaching us about his relationship with Fi than the actual assignment (foiling the planned snatching of a Venuzuelan heiress). Otherwise, I think, the plot would have made more sense -- did you understand the stuff about her disappearance influencing the well-being of certain oil conglomerates? I didn't (though I'm assuming they could blackmail Daddy into making certain business decisions). But I didn't care much either. I liked seeing Mike (or Mike's persona, Brad) go head-to-head with Nelson's swarthy kidnapper, Lesher. We also learned something: "There's an art to drinking without getting drunk. Start with a lot of ice to dilute the alcohol. Order a new round before you're done so your half-full drink gets taken away. And, of course, spill."

Yet the most important thing to note is that Mike took the work to protect Fiona, who wanted to please Campbell, who hoped to help Lesher's patsy, Henry (Clarke), get out of this mess. And that Mike used Brad's speech to Lesher about finding God and undergoing life's tests to tell Fiona he basically thought she was an angel (among other great things). PopWatcher Steph, you were right, it melted my heart. My wish: We see them work things out without Campbell getting hurt. He did cook up that tuna tahini for Mike, after all.

In the end, it's going to be a long wait until the show returns in January. Those who live close enough to the Windy City should try and catch Jeffrey Donovan on stage in the comedy Don't Dress for Dinner come November. My colleague Jason Clark, our Footlights theater columnist, says he's not to be missed.

So, what did you guys think? Do you feel satisfied, or are you, like me, wishing the episode had revealed a lot more? And thank you so much to PopWatcher Robin for finding Fiona's fanny pack online. I'm buying one!

During the kidnapping heist that Michael was trying to prevent, he tried to make it look like a 2nd security team was in play just to watch the 1st team (watchmen watching the watchmen). Could the same thing be going on with Carla's operation? They could've killed Carla's sniper when they figured that Michael might jeopardize whatever mission they were planning. Maybe they're trying to "shut down" Carla's team so to speak which includes Michael.

Semity Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

Very enjoying episode and chracter moments.

Was Victor (episode 6) on one of the picutres? Some of them were abit blurry.

JWayneH Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

I'm okay with waiting. I hate it when too much information is revealed too quickly. It ruins shows when the mystery is gone, like when Maddie slept with David, or Angela slept with Tony. I know I'm dating myself. The point is that when information is revealed too quickly the writers have to reach to come up with new episodes and it shows in the scripts. And Burn Notice is the best show of its kind on television.

real_vermonter Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I agree that more should have been revealed in the finale to move the story along. This short season has had less emotion and less romance generally than last season. If Burn Notice wants to be "James Bond" it will work as is; if it wants to keep its female viewers it needs more than good motorcycle races.

CandyMaize Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I'm okay with waiting over the haitus for the info. I guess I'm just a patient person. I thought it was interesting though, that the Mike & Fi non-verbal communication while he was making his "speech" on the telephone .. wasn't actually scripted. According to Jeffrey (check out his "emmy party" video interview with Ausiello on this site if you haven't seen it yet), that just kinda came out as they worked on the scene.

ssa Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Is it possible that the side and Carla's meetings were about the same family? The kidnapping was scuttled and then the sniper was killed..... I have also been wondering if Campbell is an operative for Carla. I hope that Fi make Carla pay for trying to blow Michael away. Can't wait until January!!

SunBurned Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

SOS -- will someone with Tivo please PLEASE post the speech script? One of the best moments in the show by far. And I also loved, in the finale, Michael's question to Fiona, "You really like him that much Fi?" Jeffrey Donovan is a wonderful actor. He doesn't overplay anything.
And The Speech was so Michael Weston: I'm going to say it, because I'm desperate, but I'm going to do it in a coded, self-protective way. Poor guy.
But there's a side of me that's stubborn and wants Fi to hold out for a real, open, declaration. No codes.

Rebecca Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE THIS SHOW! It was PERFECT! I don't want to know why he was burned right now.I'm enjoying the ride.I just hope if Carla gets replaced it is with another female.I think maybe Mike was not REALLY burned.Maybe it is a cover for him to infiltrate this organization.LOVE the Mike/Fi scenes! I think J.D should get a EMMY NOD for well EVERYTHING HE DOES!

joules Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Sam had the best lines of the episode: Sam to Michael: I got one of my FBI buddies to get me the files in exchange for some Sammy Time.... Hey, not all my buddys are guys!" Later - Michael to Sam: "I could kiss you." Sam's retort: "Get in line!"

joules Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

I disagree with all of you who think that if Mike & Fi get together it would spoil the show like Moonlighting and X-Files (or, god-forbid if House and Cuddy ever hook up). Burn Notice is different from those shows because Mike & Fi used to be together (backstory), and they were kinda-sorta together in Season one. She has just been using her relationship with Campbell to get Michael back, otherwise why would she keep asking Michael what he thinks of her new beau and why would she be at Michael's at 3:00 am? P.S. What's with their yogurt obsession? It doesn't seem to be a product placement, so I guess it's just a quirk.

Pepper Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Big disapointment. 'Hate when I watch something all season and then when it ends for the time being (I don't care if it is a "break") NOTHING is resovled. Grrrr... 'Not sure I'm going to play that game with them again when it comes back on in January.

deb Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 05:53 AM EST

I think they didn't go all out for a finale because it's really just a break in the season. But, I was still a little disappointed.
Absolutely loved Michael's speech to Lesher/Fiona. Very hot. It's scenes like that that make me rewatch the episode. Also loved a few episodes ago when Michael was an asthmatic nerd because of the scene where he throws away the inhaler and gets medieval on the pirates' ass.

Jimmy Holiday Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 05:02 AM EST

Do we really think that these world class operatives (Michael, Fiona, Sam)
would let people come into there lives without checking them out. They would always be suspicious of everyone and anything circumstancial. Michael would have Sam check out Campbell the first time he showed up.

Fiona would eliminate Carla figuring an organization with plans for Michael would just send someone else as a contact.

Michael would send Nate and Madeleine
into hiding until the burn notice was resolved, not based on the weekly job.

As for continuing plot, nothing is what it seems. So after Michael finds out who burned him, he'll be back to being a spy, but with personal enemies inside his own agency. We'll learn that who he thinks burned him isn't who really who burned him.

Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

I agree. Mike and Fi can't get together. It's the sexual tension that makes the show so deliciously titillating.

Bill from Las Vegas Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I think Carla did kill Bill the Sniper and tried to kill Michael. Once she realized that Michael figured out what her plan was, she shifted to Plan B which involves the mysterious stranger she let Michael and Co. see at the meeting. I think we've found out from Michael that spys always have a Plan B. She had already set her clean-up plan in motion. Call Bill the Sniper back to meet his doom and force Michael to retrieve his key card, which he more than likely hid in his loft, leading him to his demise. I think Carla was hoping Michael killed himself sliding under the truck because that way his death wouldn't arouse as much suspicion as two men being blown to bits a few hours apart. I think the next series of episodes will focus on Michael and Co. trying to figure out how to stop Carla from completing her mission, helping his Mom and Nate, and finding the people behind Carla.

DN Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

The sense I get is that the producers are 'dragging their feet' in regards to the overall arc of the show. The premise of "Burn Notice" is that the hero got kicked out of the CIA and, while doing job in the process, he's determined to find out who burned him. Just a season and a half into the series, the writers had us on the verge of finding that answer. Did they feel it's too soon so they're abruptly slowing things down by all of the crazy action that happened in one episode alone? For the first time, "Burn Notice" got on my nerves because it fekt like a soap opera making things up as they go along. It was disappointing.

slave2596 Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

I adore Michael. I am very suspicious of Campbell. Fiona needs to kill Carla, even though I doubt Carla was the one who tried to blow up Michael. Sam rocks my world. Nate is an irritant. Fiona and Michael do NOT need to get back together. I also wonder what his little speech in front of Fiona (to Lesher) meant. Her eyes were tearing up... Anyway LOVE THIS SHOW. Can't wait for January.

Alice Meyer Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

I really love this show. I hope it stays on TV FOREVER. I love all the characters, but Nate. Ican't wait till Jan. But I have the first season on DVD. So I can keep watching the show every day.

JB Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

Jonesing for more Fiona, The Spy Helper? Rent "If Looks Could Kill" next time you're at the movie store - enjoyably cheeseball James Bond parody featuring a younger Gabrielle Anwar.

Mozz Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

I for one, don't believe Campbell is a good guy. He totally works for "tall, blonde and evil."

michael Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 03:23 AM EST

The show needs to start focusing more on the Carla thing and less on the side jobs, especially with two (three) parters and season finales. Just for a while because I want to know more about the conspiracy thing. I think we all do. Being fed li'l tidbits is making me crazy.

The show is so full of great advice like "If you want to lose a tail it's not necessary to drive fast. It's more important to drive stupid. Signal left and turn right. Make sudden lane changes. To be successful, it's sometimes necessary to do what the other guy isn't willing to. And, of course, it's all so much easier when you're Mother's not in the car with you."

Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 03:16 AM EST

Can someone PLEASE explain Michael's speech in relation to Fiona? I still have no idea how the speech was directed at her in any way. Was it romantic? Just sweet? I would really love to know. Thanks!

Shara Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

There are some shows that I am glad to see the season finale of...Burn Notice IS NOT ONE OF THEM! I love this show so much! I was not disappointed with Thurdays episode, at all. I'm really looking forward to the winter episodes!

Deb Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

Great finale. I agree with the others that said they didn't think it was Carla that tried to blow up Michael. Assuming she is the one that got his brother in trouble with the police, that was to warn Michael off, so why kill him? If the bomb came from the person Carla is trying to kill, maybe Carla is next on the hit list. Can't wait for January.

Karen Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

One thing - why is Fiona at Mike's place at 3am and she has a boyfriend?

Karen Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I LOVE this show!!! I'm watching the episode again online right now. I would love to see Mike and Fiona get together - they are hot!

Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

If Michael and Fi get together, it will ruin the show...can we say Moonlighting...X-Files...

Ramo Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

I have never watched this show, but given the hawtness of that picture, I might have to start.

Steph Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Aubrey,
I heard that Gary Weeks was only signed for a three-episode arc -- which means his last episode is the first one that airs in January. (And personally, I don't wish harm on Campbell. I just think he's going to split when he realizes how much Fi still cares for Michael).

P.S. - Jeffrey Donovan was golden in that 3:00am phone call scene. Someone give the man an Emmy!

Jill Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Of course we know Mike didn't get blown up. That was sort of a weird cliffhanger. I was amazed at how fast Carla got from the stakeout scene onto her motorcycle in full biker gear to chase Mike around. I noticed the look on Carla's face seemed worried or concerned; like things weren't going as she had planned. Maybe she wasn't the one to blow up Bill or Mike's loft. I just hope Fiona eventually gets her wish and can shoot Carla.

Mells Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Thanks NotBetty!
Personally, I could do without Nate. So far his character has done nothing for me. What kind of a son allows his retired mother to take a loan against her house so he can start a business!?!? For those Jeff Donovan fans check out his small role in 'Hitch' or his old series 'Touching Evil' to hold you over until Jan!

Cookie Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

I love Burn Notice. Mike is HOT!!!!

I was so happy to hear "we will see you next winter for more Burn Notice". Remember Sept 2007. when Mike rolled into the semi-truck, we had to wait for our Burn fix until July 2008. This show rocks!!!

KLF Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

I can wait for January standing on my head. I am a 24 fan and it hasn't been on in 2 freaking years! But I will definitely be tuning in to find out what's in store for the gang. By January, my TIVO is going to explode with all my regulars returning in the fall and now shows like Burn Notice, The Closer and Saving Grace will also return.

Chris Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Does anyone else think that Campbell is one of Carla's guys, inserted into Michael's group to keep tabs on them? Would be a good plot twist down the road.

Kizzy Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I originally started watching the show for "Mom", Sharon Gless, but continued when I saw how good an actor Jeff Donovan was. Add in Fiona, and Sam - - - they got a winner!!! I followed Sharon Gless from "Cagney & Lacey", to "Queer As Folk" (where, by the way, her character's son was also named Michael).

Zale Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

For those in Burn Notice withdrawl, the Burn Notice paperback, The Fix, is as good a time as watching the show.

Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Sam's the best. And Michael and Fi can't get together. That would totally ruin the show.

Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

For heaven sakes...get rid of Nate! He's so annoying.

rubytoo Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

My God does Jeffery Donovan make me want to be a spy- has to be one of the hottest guys on TV- Can't wait until January !!! Warm up the winter with some hot Burn Notice episodes !!!

marilyn olbin Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

I love love the show, i really like Sam a lot, he is so funny the way he acts sometimes. But the whole show is great

TheBookPolice Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Long wait to January...pfft. Try being a LOST fan.

I wish I could remember to watch this show more regularly, but every time I catch up with it, I like it more.

Dorothy Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Love the show,Michael is hot, Sam makes a great side kick, sexual tension between Michael and Fiona makes the show sizzle, maybe they'll find their way back to each other some day, mom, well she's mom, adding Nate, that was a great idea, I agree with Herb above these five characters can carry the show while the guest just do their thing. How long till January?????????

Rory Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I, too, am glad Nate was back. The show "needs" a screw up; everyone is else is so competent. Hate wishing my life away, but wish it was January.

Letty Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Love, love, love the show. Can't wait till January. I also saw clips of a new movie with Angelina Jolie on a true story and guess who else is going to be in it! Jeff Donovan; will definetly have to go see it. I believe it comes out in October or November but can't remember the name of the movie but I am sure it will be advertized!

NotBetty Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

To Mells, me too! That was a great throw away line.
I also don't think Carla took out the sniper or boobytrapped Michael's place. I think whoever they are up against is trying to take out the lower echelon operatives to get the higher ups to back off. It just doesn't make sense that Carla would be following him if she was going to blow him up.

R. Mansfield Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Don't forget that Donovan will also be in Clint Eastwood's movie The Changeling coming out in a few weeks.

herb Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

I think the hanger here is perfect. You really don't know anything and need to hang until Jan. BTW waiting until JAN is much better than another year (the summer). I am so excited to know we can turn in in 4 mos., I just love this show. Michael needs to take Carla out though. There is now way someone as good as he can "live" with her. Bringing Nate back was a great decision. I think he really needs to get more time with Michael (perhaps mentoring him) to assist with "cases" would be a good thing. And as usual Mom was great. The 5 characters plus "guests" as in the original is just perfect. THese 5 can carry the guests

Kay Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

1st time watching this show, and I really liked. Guess I'll be watching all the re runs until January, since I started at the end! Glad I read the wikepedia description cause I wondered what the deal was with Micheal and Fiona.

jj Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

I keep thinking the Premises of this show will get old - I'm happy to say it hasn't yet - I'm still completely hooked.

Kirsten Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

See, I didn't think that Carla planted the bombs for Bill and Michael. I figured that maybe Michael's actions had tipped off whomever Carla's people were up against. Mostly, I liked the idea that the good guys and bad guys might not be so hard to figure out.

LisaMama Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

Great episode, but the cliff-hanger seemed a little pointless. Michael can't be dead in there's a whole bunch of new episodes airing in January! But my husband said "geez, I hope they don't give Mike amnesia". Now that would be bad!
Loved Sam in this episode and of course, the interaction between Fi and Michael. At one point I thought that this guy can't be a very good spy because you can see every emotion on his face when it comes to Fiona! :-)

Mells Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

When Sam referred to Carla by saying "She's a machine" - a lovely nod to her Cylon days - I laughed so hard! Naturally, my husband thought I was nuts.
