Can Britney's good-ish fortune continue?

Sep 16, 2008, 09:21 AM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Britney Spears, Music

Fresh off a hot streak of not being a huge disaster for a few weeks, Britney's decided to release her upcoming album, Circus. We might have gone with Frappe, Blackhole, or I Had the Most Unbeweavable Year, but Circus really is quite apt. It'll come out on Britney's 27th birthday, December 2, which seems a little early, as her last effort dropped only last fall. Blackout sold almost 900K copies, nowhere near the haul of Brit's previous megamillion sellers. (Ugh, I hate when horrible people like me point that out. I'm always like -- in the voice of Ms. J -- "Girllllll, I'll TAKE the toy car load of royalty money from one of those "less successful" albums if you don't want it! Betch.)

Anyway, give us your fall music forecast in the poll below!

circus tour? now christina aguilera didn't do a circus tour, but her "back to basics" album was something like a circus theme. copy cat?

Stephanie T. Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Ria is right. I don't think she can sing. But in this post modern era of people who can look good on the camera, dance, but are weak singers, Brit is the queen. She can host and act in comedies, that I'll give her credit for. She did a fabulous job at the 2008 MTV Music Awards.

Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

I loved Blackout. There were some really great, catchy songs on there. I have a feeling the new album will do just as good as Blackout and hopefully even better. I am not a big pop music person (listen mostly to classic rock), but for some reason I love me some Britney. I am so happy to see her doing so well. Hopefully she will have a kickazz comeback and get her life even more together!

Classy Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

She did more than not avoid being a disaster at the VMAs-she owned them. She looked fantastic, and the ratings went through the roof b/c of her. As longs as she actively promotes the album (performances, interviews etc.), and acts like she actually gives a damn about the record, it will be a smash. She's gonna use the other chicks wigs to mop the freakin floor. I mean what other female artist is soooo huge that they can still go (certified) platinum with no management, a deplorable public image, an embarrassing tv performance, no tour and zero interviews? Britney sold almost a milli, and all she did was sit on the beach and smoke cigarettes. There's no question as to what she can do if she actually puts forth some effort!

ltat Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

okay whatever

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

You so crazy, Brit.

Sarah Palin Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

pre-marital sex and listening to pop music are sins!

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

lmao :)

Britney Spears Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

love y'all

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

no, I was talking to itat

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Comeback to what??? you didnt say anything in which i felt the need to "comeback" to. Check your posts sweetie.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

I wish Britney a lot of luck.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

lol thats your comeback? Britney fans are hilarious.

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Ria, you're the type who comes on these sites just to start sh*t.
I'm done with your stupid as*. Nobody cares about your opinion, as you can see, nobody has agreed with any portion of the crap you've spewed out.
Take care.... see you in line when Brits CD drops on December 2nd!

ltat Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Ria r u a guy or a girl cuzz its sounds like u r a guy

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

whoa are you feeling okay? Overall, Britney is the main discussion. If you can't handle it, then go to a Britney fansite if you only want to hear positive things. And I don't hate Britney. Just because someone points out that she doesn't have the best voice, does not mean they hate her. Someone can point out a person's singing ability or even a flaw they may have - it doesn't make them a 'hater.' This is a blog and a discussion about the singer since we are talking about their new music and what they will release in the future.

ltat Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I LOVE BRITNEY EVEN BEFORE BLACKOUT I KNEW SHE WAS GONNA HAVE A COMEBACK. SHE CREATED A BRAND NEW POP. BRITNEY IS POP AND FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT HAVE SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY,WE HWVW A WORD FOR YOU ITS HATERS IF YOUR A GIRL HATIN ITS BCUZZ YOU DNT LOOK AS GOOD AS HER AND IF U A DUDE HATIN IT'S BCUZZ U COULDN'T GET A GIRL THAT LOOKS HALF AS GOOD AS BRIT SO GET OFF HER CLI*

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Stop trying to make "butthurt" work.
No Ria, this isn't a discussion about Britney's talent. It is a discussion about her upcoming CD and whether you are excited about its release. You are obviously not. Therefore, you have made your point, now go away.
We get it, you don't like her.... why are you still here defending your rather weak position? Sad case.
Its funny how you judge Britney, who is obviously successful and must possess some form of talent, while you can't get a point across and cant attempt to do so without resorting to childish names and bewildering retorts.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

um ok

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Srsly: it's been used as almost every part of speech. I'm even including Object Complements here. This kind of grammatical wrecklessness has GOT to be stopped.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Well a lot of my comments were about her talent. That was the discussion. And I guess other people got upset because I said she wasn't that talented and decided to shift the conversation elsewhere. And ia, I think the word butthurt is suppose to be a new cuss word, lol

GeeMoney Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

I never said anything about Britney not being able to sing..... all I said was if you don't care about her, why waste time talking about her?

Not to mention, these catty comments going back and forth.... totally love it! What's a "butthurt"? Maybe it's a new cuss word.... :)

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

huh? Of course Britney Spears still has fans. Its great that people are looking forward to her music. This whole discussion was about her talent. Wasn't it? It seems like you're the one who still is 'butthurt.'

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Poor Ria, you're outnumbered girl.
Take your "butthurt" home. The majority of these posts are in support of Britney, so take your negative crap elsewhere.
BTW - Britney is not only teaming up with JT on this one, but also the Pussycat Dolls... sweet!

Rion Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I am very very excited for this album. I'm a huge Britney fan and I want Circus to do extremely well for her.
FYI: Blackout was her best album, and the only reason it didn't sell was because she didn't tour or promote it.

Brian Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

The whole "she just released a cd a year ago" is just a pathetic thing to say. who cares? ne-yo did the same thing last year (may 2007) and just dropped his new one today. so what? music is music and there we no complaints about blackout except the lack of promotion. deal with it :)

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

Don't like what? This whole thing is funny. I must have hit a nerve when I said Britney can't sing. And why make a big deal out of this? This is a blog, right?

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Okay, great. I just need to know one more thing: is this something you conjured up out of thin air, a la "Hey Girl Hey!," or does this originate somewhere? I really did not want to have to go down this winding road.

Trex Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Ria...if you dont like it, stop participating in it. You have yet to form any solid argument other than "butthurt", which I too cant understand.
Meh, leave britney alone, the girl has been through enough

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Is this suppose to be a fansite of Britney Spears? We are allowed to discuss her. You can't expect positive praise from a simple post about Britney on EW. And butthurt is similar to the word upset. Trashy pig, lol, sounds like you got upset because you expected to hear only good things.

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Ria you're so condescending. I hate people like you who come on here and go on and on about their dislike for the topic of the original post.
If you dont like her, thats totally fine, but dont waste our time and space by going on and on about how she has no talent. You're not a fan, great! So go write about someone you are a fan of! Stop wasting my time and space.
Oh and by the way, you've been asked for the definition of "butthurt"? I assume thats a negative slang/title.... so you can add hypocrite to your list of attributes, for you as well name-call.
(I would assume "butthurt" to come from a 10 yr old, not trashy pig)

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

I know I'm not a rude person, but you're showing how rude you are by throwing around names. Are you 10? Saying someone can't sing is not something to get uppity about. But its ok, I know I'm not a trashy pig. Those words sound like it would fit someone else but I won't mention that person because I wouldn't call someone a pig. Take a deep breath and relax, and understand that not everyone thinks Britney Spears is the most talented person on earth.

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

But what about butthurt? Why is it okay to say that, assuming it has meaning? Am I alone in this? Should I know the semantic origins of butthurt? I can't even piece together a solid pronunciation.

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

I wish she was! Im not getting upset about the topic, Im getting ANNOYED at how rude and spiteful you are. And yes, I feel "trashy pig" really sums you up. Doesnt feel so great being ridiculed does it? Especially since I dont even know you.

Thanks for the spelling correction Dennis.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Trashy pig? Wow, you do seem upset. This is a discussion about pop music and you're calling people names? You're showing how tough and mature you really are... And yes you do seem 'butthurt.' Just because the world doesn't think Britney is talented, really is not a big deal. Please finish your morning coffee and relax. Its hilarious how people get upset over something minor like this. Is Britney at your door or something?

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

grammar*
Almost, TruBlu. Almost.

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

"butthurt"??????????????
Nice demonstration of both your intelligence and grammer. Bravo princess.

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Ugh Ria, who the hell do you think YOU are? Some trashy pig who spends her time discussing things she dislikes? Im not upset, I just find you incredibly ignorant and annoying.
And sweetheart, Im aware of the topic of the discussion, I dont need your rude-as* to inform me.

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

butthurt...alright.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

lol TruBlu, you are so butthurt. If you can't handle a simple discussion, then it proves how easily you get upset. This is a discussion about Britney Spears, not the Holy Bible.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

GeeMoney - saying that Britney can't sing is not bashing. Some of her songs are hot but I'm not delusional. People know why shes famous. Where is the harm in pointing out the truth on why Britney is still relevant for all these years.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

lol Fatima, I'm actually a huge fan of hers. Her last album was really good and highly underrated. I am looking forward to hearing her new material.

GeeMoney Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

The fact that people are going out of their way to bash Britney on this blog should be telling you that her album will sell (and hopefully it'll have some good tracks on it to help it sell big). People on this blog shouldn't get upset over negative comments that other people make about Britney.... if you truly didn't like or care about her, then why would you take five minutes out of your day to blog about her?

Anyways, Blackout was a fantastic album... I hope that Circus is just as good.

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

My one wish before Circus comes out:

Make Radar a single first!! Pre-packaged success!

sgs Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

I not or was not a Britney fan until I won 'Black Out' at a disco I was at where they had a drawing! To be fair and honest (and I'm 40 years old), I LOVED the CD and I still play it. Come on, 'Piece of Me' is a great song (among others on it)! I look forward to hearing Britney (a 'freakshow', that was a great song off of Blackout too) with her new CD 'Circus'. I bet it will do well on the charts! Can't wait!

Josie Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Love Britney!!! Hope her album rocks (unlike my former faves Madonna, Janet, and Mariah).
Also, totally agree Fatima : love Brandy's new song and really lookin' forward to her comeback!

TruBlu Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Shut up Ria. Your comments are so negative and pointless. Who are you to judge what kind of artist she is and the type of people who enjoy her music. Have you ever heard of "to each their own"????
Just because you dont like her, doesnt mean you should attempt to ruin it for others.
You're the type of b*tch that always rags on other women, you're the reason we dont get anywhere. always bringing others down, never providing optimistic or creative criticism.

Fatima Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

There are far too many actually talented popstars releasing albums this fall to care. I wish someone would hype Brandy's return a bit more:(

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

There are people who are WAY more talented than Britney and there are only a few musicians out there who write, play, and SING their own material. Britney can't sing nor does she write the MAJORITY of her songs. Do people really think that Britney is responsible for the material itself? Her producers are the ones who create the catchy beats that grab people's attention. People need to stop acting as if she isn't some manufactured industry created star. Her whole career has been based on lip-syncing, dancing, and looking hot. People know this by now. Only her rabid fans believe otherwise.

Elena Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

Britney doesn't do all the writing of her music. But she has helped with the writing of some of the songs. You can't tell, songs like Why Should I be Sad or Everytime or even Piece of Me doesn't have some contribution in some part. Other people's names are given the credit. But Britney has helped with certain songs. She is talented. Wish her songs sometimes were so computerized. I can't wait for the new music.

Kat Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

900,000 is nothing to sneeze at given the status of the music industry and all of Britney's issues at the time. And plus, didn't her CD leak before hand. So shouldn't you add all the downloads of the CD until the final LOL. So it's possible she did much more... But hopefully the new one is a hit.

Ria Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Britney doesn't contribute anything to her music. So of course the cd will be good. The producers are the ones who create the hot beats and then they computerize Britney's voice - since we all know that she can't sing. The cd might do well but its not like Britney is responsible for the content of the music.

Patti Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Blackout wasn't released the day after the VMA's. It was released on Halloween. Early, because it had leaked or was in danger of being leaked. But Gimme More was newly out when she did the infamous performance at the VMA's. I agree, lack of promotion and her mental state and personal issues were a big reason why people ignored "Blackout" even though it was a fantastic CD. Britney is one in a million. She truly looks to be getting her life together, and I truly hope this next CD is a huge success for her...

Lauren Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

Blackout is an awesome dance album. I find more listenable than all of her previous albums put together. It's unfortunate that the charades in her personal life gave people a reason to shun her best musical effort.

Stephanie T. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Brit did no press for Blackout so the sales tanked. Her phopa from the 2007 MTV Music Awards did not help either. People forgot that Blackout was released the DAY AFTER the music awards. I am glad to see her recover ala Mariah Carey style with a new producer, etc. Still while I still think that she can't sing, if you have a good audio team working with you, anything can happen...and it did.

graeme Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

As long as the album is as good as "Blackout" was, then it will have no problem selling.

Dennis N. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

Blackout woulda been slammin if Britney was, oh-I-dunno-CONSCIOUS during its promotion and ENTIRE run on the shelves. I hope she promo-teases us until December with a few almost-disasters (i.e. a well-documented trip to a suspicious orthodontist, coming out of Starbuck's with, gasp, no whip!). I mean srslies, my heart can't take any more rehab or baby-dropping scares, but I know for a fact imma gonna needta be weaned.

PS- Annie, I absolutely CANNOT wait for DWTS to premiere; not because I enjoy near-octogenarians testing their bone density on a weekly basis, but because of DWTS Talk! My fave!

wakeforce Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

The only reason Blackout did not sell well is because of it's lack of promotion. Brit didn't do any press for the album. The mtv wins seems to be a publicity stunt for the new album. The people who say that no one cares about Britney? Everytime she is on the cover of a magazine, it sells through the roof!

VanMan Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

I love how people always complain and begrudge Britney Spears. Obviously, somebody is listening/buying/cares... she continues to sell albums, videos, perfume, and magazines. Plus, the haters still take the time to discuss her in chatrooms and blogs. If you don't give a sh*t, why are you so adament about voicing her dislike?
Personally, I'm looking forward to it, just as I have with her past albums. As has been mentioned, Britney is good gym and club music, her form of pop music is always a good time. Plus, sounds like she has some major production on this.
Good for her, I'll for sure buy it (and nor am I a "redneck" but rather a university educated individual who happens to enjoy something you dont)

susan Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

I think how well Circus performs depends on whether Britney can actually perform and how well. As far as the VMA wins, the fans voted for the nominees but mtv voted for the winners except for best new artists. Thats the only category the fans voted the winner in. Britney's winning was nothing more then gratuitous on the part of mtv since Piece Of Me was a piece of crap compared to her other videos. They were just making up for letting her perform last year when they had to know she wasn't up to it.

kaf Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

Although it did have to grow on me a bit at first, I now think Blackout was her best album. I can't wait to hear Circus! No one's music is better for getting me fired up at the gym!

Stacey Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

Generalize much? And weren't the VMA's voter based this year. So it was the fans who voted for Britney. I admit she had stronger video's in the past. But given some of those nominees, "Piece of Me" was steller in comparison. I do think MTV manipulated Britney last year, but I don't think they gave to her as payback. Now, I am excited about her new CD. And I am not red neck. I love her music. She was never the strongest singer but she's talented and I love her CDs. I thik one of the reasons her last CD didn't do as well because her personal life was a distraction and her fragile mental health and a lack of promotion. This time she is looking well on the way to recover and this might do well. Even though "Blackout" was exceptional. A critical success for a change. Can't wait to see what this first new single, "Womanizer" sounds like.

Cheezbloc21 Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

OMJONAS, Brittney your pretty much only going on now with the millions of rednecks who actually buy your CDS and the only reason you won any VMAs was due to the fact MTV feels bad for bashing you last year. Its sad that you even pretend to be popular based on your music!!!THATS THE KICKER!!!ahhahahahaha

Annie B. Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

Vacation! I've missed you too, anonymous.

confidential Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

When will people just let Britney go!! She never could sing and her version of pop is sooooooooo done. She doesn't have to do much and the media goes all nuts for her. MTV gave her those awards she didn't deserve them and what does MTV know about music anyway. They should have given the 2008 Hot A$$ Mess award.

Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

Where have you been, Annie? I've missed you!
