Bits and Bobs (Vol. 12): 'Torchwood' DVD Exclusive

Sep 15, 2008, 09:51 AM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Categories: Bits and Bobs, British things

Confession time: I preferred Torchwood’s star-packed, single-minded second season to its innovative, low-key premiere year. I was totally taken by the life-and-death saga of Burn Gorman’s Owen Harper, and glad to see Doctor Who’s Freema Agyeman temporarily join the team. My top episode: "Reset." Favorite character: PC Andy (yeah, I’m a softie). Must see guest star: between Gavin & Stacey’s Ruth Jones and Buffy’s James Marsters (I know, I know, bad Brit accent and all).

I’m also worried that next year’s five-show season three, Torchwood: Children of the Earth, won’t be enough — so I’ve been devouring the series two DVDs (out tomorrow). Enjoy these exclusive outtakes, below, before running out to buy your own copy. And then share: Did you rock with season two? Who’s your favorite Torchwood character, guest star, and episode?

For more info on Torchwood: Season 2, check out my review here. And take note: Children of the Earth isn’t the only promises-to-be-good show hitting Brit TV in the upcoming months.  In case you missed it, check out last week’s Bits and Bobs for the lowdown on future U.K. TV (David Tennant in Einstein and Eddington! Kenneth Branagh in Wallander! Richard Armitage in MI-5!).  Or go to TV Fan and debate the possible merits of season 3 with blogger llkane

Your Bits and Bobs-recommended calendar for the week, after the jump!

Monday (September 15th): Ricky Gervais guests on Late Night with Conan O’Brien at 12:35 on NBC.
Tuesday:  The must-get of the week (besides Torchwood, of course): The British Cinema Classic “B” Film Collection, Vol. 1. With Carol Reed’s Girl in the News, staring Margaret Lockwood, this is an essential for British film fans. Add Diana Dors as a sexy vamp in Tread Softly Stranger and this really is a golden set.  Must-listen of the week: The Ricky Gervais Show podcast returns on iTunes and Audible.com! (And House premieres on Fox at 8pm.)
Wednesday: Stephen Merchant stops by Jimmy Kimmel Live! at 12:05 on ABC, while Ashley Jensen visits Chelsea Lately at 2:30am on E!
Thursday: Ricky Gervais continues his week of Ghost Town promotion on Kimmel.
Friday: Pick up Peter Cook and Dudley Moore: The Best of…What’s Left of…Not Only…But Also…on DVD.  Like the “B” Film Collection, this is a must for anglophiles interested iconic British entertainment (and anyone who can’t wait for the September 28th premiere of Little Britain). Support Ricky Gervais on the big screen by seeing Ghost Town, even if, like me, you're terrified it might be rubbish.
Saturday: Catch the Primeval season 2 premiere on BBC America at 9pm.
Sunday: Watch Billie Piper in Ruby in the Smoke on PBS at 9pm.

I love Torchwood! While season one had its great moments and its not so great moments, I thought season two was wonderful. I too was taken by Owen's storyline. Exit Wounds left me gutted (and crying like a baby) as Owen and Tosh were my two favourite characters, but their final scenes in that episode were my favourite moments of the whole season. I'm a little leery about season three, mostly because it's only 5 episodes. I want more!

actually the scotsman rated James accent fairly high recently ! Itake thier word of EW any day

Amanda Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I loved the secon season of Torchwood. My favorite characters are Rhys and Tosh. I loved Rhys in the second season, and hated to see Tosh die.I didn't like Owen much, but I started to love him right before he dies. Small Worlds,Adam, and They Keep Killing Suzie are some of my favorite episodes.

Daisy Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

James Marsters' English accent on Buffy was extensively coached by Anthony Head aka Giles~ you'll notice it slips a LOT after Giles leaves the show. I guess for Torchwood he didn't have much time to practice, because it's back to the bad accents for him. But he can take comfort in the fact that his accent will never be worse than David Boreanaz's Oirish. Yuk.

BTW: Ianto all the way....

Sarah Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

Ianto is my favorite character and Fragments my favorite episode.

Of course I like Jack a lot, but Ianto was the reason I kept watching after episodes I didn't like in s1 and he only got better in s2.

Letishue Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

My favorite character was Owen. The show's not going to be the same without him. I loved "A Day in the Death" last season, as for guest star I loved Freema's chemistry with the cast. I wasn't huge Martha fan over on Dr. Who, but she was awesome on Torchwood.

Raven_Moon Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

Unfortunately, I don't get the BBC (America) channel. I have watched the James Marsters clips on YouTube, though. I mayu have to check this out one DVD.

Favourite Character: Ianto

I have yet to see season 2, so...
Favourite Episode: Captain Jack Harkness, talk about a hot kiss!!!!

Nina Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

Without Jack there is no TORCHWOOD. Barrowman is what makes the show so much fun to watch. Without John's persona guiding the show, it's likely the character of Ianto, would still be just a butler/tea boy or have been killed off in the first season. Sad about Owen and Tosh, but as long as there's Jack and Ianto, I'm watching.

Favorite episode: (two, equally...Captain Jack Harkness and Fragments
Favorite guest: Marsters (no contest)

Monica Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

I liked season two better, also, although I felt that a lot of the episodes started strong and ended awkwardly, such as 'To the Last Man', 'Adam', and 'From Out of the Rain'.

My favorite characters are Ianto and Tosh, and I can't tell you all how sad I was to see Tosh die. I felt her character was never fully used. Rhys is another favorite, and I was happy he got in on the secret of Torchwood.

Both seasons of Torchwood had their ups and downs. Best eps: "Out of Time" (s1) and "Fragments" (s2). Which should tell you I'm an Owen fanatic. And I'm so irritated about what they did to Owen that I had the dubious distinction of telling BBC Exec Julie Gardner face to face at Comic-Con that I would no longer be watching Torchwood again because of Owen. After a moment of looking shocked she asked 'surely you'll come back and watch again'. I looked her straight in the eye and said "No. No Owen, no reason to watch Torchwood."

I've never understood the fans who were so attached to one character that without that character the show was unwatchable. After the season two finale of Torchwood, I finally understood.

That said, a few minutes later I ran into Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto) at the con and he was so charming and delightful that I may break my resolution after all. Sigh. I didn't use to be fickle.

James Corns Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Ianto seems to be the favorite on this board, and he is my favorite, too.

As for episodes, my favorite is "Captain Jack Harkness," in which Jack met up with his namesake.

I also hope to see James Marsters make a return, and Seasons 1 & 2 were bother great, IMHO, so I hope season 3 is comparable or even better. (Though, at only a handful of eps, that seems impossible.)

susu005 Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

I was priveledged to see Gareth-David LLoyd, Anthony Lewis and James Marsters at Dragon Con in Atlanta.. I think my favorite guest star is Anthony Lewis, I loved his 2 part episodes. The stories they told in the 2 panels I attended were loads of fun..

Jonas Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Martha won't be in Torchwood series 3, she signed on th do law & Order:UK instead.

My favorite episode is probably "Countrycide" or "Small Worlds"....or maybe Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang with James Masters (favorite guets star).

Cristina Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

I agree - Ianto is my favorite. I always have a soft spot for those organized people who don't seem to get much recognition but actually do most of the work (see: Pepper Potts, Pam Beesly, Alfred Pennyworth) - maybe because I can relate to them! Anywho, I love Torchwood and didn't mind the second season but I hated to see Owen and Tosh go. I thought the first season was much more fun but Marsters added a great WOO-HOO to the show. I hope Martha and Ricky do join Torchwood. Although, I have never been able to figure out why they got rid of Martha in Dr Who. I liked her there! Anyone know why?

alyson Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Hated series two overall - hated what they did to Tosh, hated that they basically ignored the Gwen/Owen storyline from series one; John Barrowman could have chemistry with a paper bag, but I never bought the attraction between Jack and Gwen and it irritated me. Best episode of the series, for me, was "To the Last Man," going away.

Jill Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Ianto is the best character. End of story.

But I will definitely miss Tosh and Owen. I don't doubt the miniseries will be great since it is being written by Russell T Davies but I can't imagine the show without them. I would loved to be proved wrong though.

Torchwood is the only sci-fi I can sit through. It is so incredibly well written, I forget I am watching a show about aliens.

e-z-e Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

I preferred series 2, and I will agree with the love for Burn Gorman.

Based on their talk with Jack at the end of DW series 4, is there a chance that both Martha and Mickey will be joining the team in the upcoming miniseries?

Jonas Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Some of you might have missed "Dream Team" on Fox Soccer Channel. It is not Footballes Wifes, but a quite fun soap about a football team.

Snarf Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Haven't seen it, yet but the hot and heavy kiss between Barrowman and Marsters will probably top my list. (Saw it in a commercial) Yowza.

MM Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

My favorite Torchwood character is the late Owen Harper. I thought his character really developed this season and I was very sad and frustrated to see him go. My favorite episode is "Adam" because I couldn't see how the Torchwood Team was going to get out of that one and my favorite guest star was James Marsters, if only for that HOT kiss he shared with Jack.

Alli Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

While I think season 2 had the better overall story arc, season 1 definitely had the better stand alone eps - "Out of Time," "Countrycide," and "They Keep Killing Suzie" all spring to mind. That said, I loved Alan Dale's guest ep in "Reset" - that man just keeps popping up in all of my favorite shows!

Heleno Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Has something gone wrong with Marsters' English accent since Sunnydale? It always completely convinced me in Buffy and I live there. In England, that is. Not Sunnydale. Which is a shame really.

Leigh Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Ianto Jones is by far my favorite TW character. I'm pretty excited that he'll be getting a bigger role in the next season! But I definitely have a soft spot for both Rhys and PC Andy. My favorite guest star is James Marsters and my favorite episode is Something Borrowed.
