Anthony Edwards to return to 'ER' despite his character being dead

Sep 4, 2008, 05:13 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Dude, THAT's your plot?, Press Release of the Week, Television

Anthonyedwards_l Well, PopWatchers, I gotta say I didn't see this one coming: Despite my hopes that the upcoming final season of ER would bring a slew of guest appearances from some of the approximately 2,560 actors that have graced the halls of County General over the past 14 years, Anthony Edwards' Dr. Mark Greene never quite entered my consciousness. Not that I didn't love the guy -- his bespectacled bald head and befuddled inability to get it together with Sherry Stringfield's character were my favorite non-Clooney-oriented parts of the show's early years. But, um, HE'S DEAD. (You remember: Brain tumor. Hawaii. Profanity on prime-time TV. Etc.) (What I didn't remember: How ahead of the curve they were on that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole ukulele version of "Over the Rainbow." Nice.)

And yet, there it was, in our inboxes this afternoon: NBC ANNOUNCES GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER AND EMMY NOMINEE ANTHONY EDWARDS TO REPRISE HIS ROLE AS DR. MARK GREENE FOR ONE EPISODE OF 'ER' FOR ITS 15TH AND FINAL SEASON. (Caps NBC's, not mine.)

Wow! Bombshell! And one that, I figured, would take some doing to work. But it turns out it's happening the only way it possibly could -- on November 13th, in an episode called "Heal Thyself," we'll get a new flashback courtesy of the other big returning character, Mr. Noah "Dr. Carter" Wyle, whose story line, it turns out, will constitute the bookends of this show's epic run. A call over to the network confirms that the flashback will take place in a time right before Mark's second bout with the brain tumor, and give some insight into the past of Dr. Cate Banfield, a.k.a. "that lady Angela Bassett's playing."

What do we think, ER fans? Yea or nay on the bringing people back from the dead here? Does this mean we can expect a Dr. Romano return, as well? Who else are you hoping to see back in ER's halls one final time? And honestly, if Clooney doesn't show, how bummed will you be?

Leslie Sat, May 30, 2009 at 02:06 PM EST

wow an emergency came up and I didn't get to watch the last episode. So how can I get my hands on it or see it somewhere. Also I have the dvd series 1 thru 10 I can't find 11-15 any idea. I loved all the episodes and characters. I do have to say that I always wanted Carter and Abbey together forever. But thats the way it goes. I LOVE ER

ibrahim Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 02:59 PM EST

anthony edwards is the best actor in the whole ER.You can see by his emotions, comedy and sadness
i wish to see him in any other movies or episodes

Aya Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 08:35 AM EST

i love the character d.Greene & Anthony Edwards is the best.

Katie Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

I as pleased with the episode where he make his return, although I do have to admit it did make me shed some tears. The episode was not what I was expecting though, I was thinking they were going to bring his wife and maybe another 1 of the original cast members back and they were going to remember him.

I would like to see her come back, Elizabeth I think was her name and I would also like to see Juliana Marguiles who played Carol, the nurse. She was one of my favorites as well as Abby and Luca.

stella Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

I saw it, and I loved. He was always my favorite character... I like that they also had Romano, Weaver, and Jerry guest star.... especially Jerry, he was so under-appreciated as an actor and character in that show. Although the actors have aged created some issues with the script, it was still an excellent episode. There are so many guest stars I still want to see before the show ends though.

nancy Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Actually, the film, A Perfect World, from 1993 used the Over The Rainbow song. Directed by Clint Eastwood, starred Kevin Costner.
And i see someone is mixing up Kovac w/ Karev. wrong show!!!I enjoy Grey's Anatomy but it'll never be an er!!!

nancy Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

I love Tony Edwards! His character was my favorite. Glad they have found a way to bring him back.MichaelCrichton said from the beginning, his focus was on Carter as a newbie, his path of learning etc. It'll be great to see Carter again! I'd be thrilled if Clooney would show up. HE is a great prankster so it could happen! This series has had ups and downs but I will always love it.

jennifer Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

I just found out about this and I am so excited about it!

Robin Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I'm excited to see this episode not only because Anthony Edwards will be back but because my daughter is on this episode! WOOHOO!

Lyss Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

I'm actually kind of excited to see him come back but not in this capacity...I wish it was for the very final episode and something to do with Carter...actually that was what I really wanted was for all these characters that had such a big influence on Carter over the years and have them show up while he's in a coma and have Mark say "You set the tone, Carter." and then he wakes up...and something happens.

Mom2gtj Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

My thought - everything that's happened for the last 15 years has been in the head of Nurse Hathaway. Remember how in the first episode she took that over dose and it all looked so bleak that she'd survive?

kind of 'a-la-St. Elsewhere'.

blaneyphoto Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

I think they borrowed the idea of using that version of Over the Rainbow from the movie Finding Forrester, but it still works.

Joe Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

ER is on TV?!

I thought it went off around 1998!

Is Chicago Hope still around as well? That was slightly better.

Kate Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

There are so many great drama shows out there. But, I love ER.Watched it from the very beginning.Wish it would air on weekends as well as weeknights.ER shouldn't end after 15 years.Keep it on Forever.. I love all the cast from past ,present & future to be. Bring them all back for the remaining season or seasons. There will be a 16th season for sure. Each cast member made me laugh & cry.I love ER.
Your forever number 1 fan. Kate. Will buy their DVDs from season 1 to 15 etc.years. I love ER & I'll admire the cast who I will never forget but, always remember & love.

Ronda Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

My husband and I have started purchasing the ER DVD Series. I watched it occassionally before but we are totally hooked now. I hope the whole cast makes an appearance in the season to close it out right.

llama cass Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

i think it would be neat if they just totally wiped the slate clean and brought back everyone for another 14 seasons. what if abby and greene were together? clooney w/ the drug problem, and weaver attacked by the chopper? there were so many great story lines and characters, mixing it up and doing it again would be great!

foggy Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

I can't stand the Clooney years, the best were with Carter and Benton, I also loved watching Green and Cordea together too. Although I don't think the current cast has the chemistry the others had I do hope Luka and Abbey get back together.

I'm a long time fan and I'm totally sad to see this show leave. :(

lou borders Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 12:39 AM EST

I can hardly wait for this season to begin. I'm anxious to see who all they bring back. I've loved this show and will be very sad to see it go. I'll have to start watching it in reruns again.

Amy Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

I didn't even know the show was still on TV. I stopped watching after Clooney left.

Tamr Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:14 PM EST

I can't believe this 'old groaner' is still on network tv. It is soooo '90's.

Charles Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Perhaps it was all a dream, ala Dallas

or-gal Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Maybe we will finally find out who attacked Dr. Greene in the mens room. It drove me crazy that they never closed that storyline. And, if Noah Wyle is coming back, then I would love to see Eric LaSalle back, for being two men, the chemistry between them was amazing.

Maggie Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

i love the idea of bringing Carter back, they should bring Lucy back too, that was the saddest episode beside Dr. Greene dying. they should bring them (Clooney, Carter, Romano, Lucy, Corday, Benton, Boulet..on and on) all back for that flashback episode.

Trish Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

If you bring back Romano, you have to bring back his nemesis, the helicopter. I'd tune in.

DanOregon Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Given Clooney's repeated public statements of gratitude for the launching pad that ER gave him, I'd be surprised if he turns the show down. Make that really surprised. The tough part is, is that he really has no connection to any of the current characters. I thought a great final season storyline would have been an old lawsuit against the hospital bringing in old characters for depositions would have been a natural, but I guess that was a little too optimistic.

MsDaisy Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Nobody wants Laura Innes to come back to reprise her role as Carrie Weaver? Yeah, me neither.

joules Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Yes, bring back Kirsten Dunst as Charlie! and Wm. H. Macy as Morganstern. In a kilt, please, with a side of Haggis. And Mariska Hargitay as Cynthia. And Trevor Morgan, as Scotty Anspaugh (also dead). Chad Lowe and Kellie Martin. Not Ray Barnett, (Shane West) though. ER's writers are SICK! for what they did to his character. SICK!! And could we please find out where Tag went when he disappeared? Thanks!

joules Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

The show stopped being as good once Juliana Margulies left. If Carol & Doug Ross come back with the twins for a visit, I'll be happy I kept watching all these years. What I notice most when I watch the old reruns on TNT is that each episode used to have a heartwarming or funny B-story line to balance out all the death & gore of the A-story line. The friendship between Doug Ross and Mark Greene was often the source of the humor. At some point soon after George Clooney left, the show became grim and humorless. How it managed to grind on year after year is a mystery, given all the great shows that get cancelled after one year.

Dan Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Also Kirsten Dunst as the messed-up girl Clooney tried to help. And us Lost fans would like to see Daniel Dae Kim (psychiatrist), Elizabeth Mitchell (psychiatrist), L. Scott Caldwell (NICU nurse), and Sam Anderson (surgeon) in the same scene together just as a nice joke for us to enjoy. And I think Sam and L. Scott's characters should be married.

Dan Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

William H. Macy please!

Laura Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

As a continual watcher of ER (only missing 1-2 episodes) I am so looking forward to this final season, I'd love to see anyone from story arcs past; Dr. Benton, Nurse Hathaway, all the nurses, esp. Halleh, Randy the desk clerk - and now that Men in Trees is off-air, Jerry.
I fell in love with this show in '94, I love it now and it will always be in my Top 5 of all-time fave shows.
THANK YOU for so many great years!

Jackie Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I was never a huge fan of the show, but I've caught the re-runs on TNT. A few years ago, I was in Hawaii on vacation. One evening, it was raining really hard, and I didn't want to venture out, so I got some food and turned on the TV in my hotel room. It was the episode where Anthony Edwards' character died in Hawaii, and I cried my eyes out. Next day, I ate dinner at a place where they were playing that version of "Over the Rainbow," and I got teary.

Would watch if Noah Wylie's character was back, but not Clooney. I know it's against the laws of womanhood, but I don't find him attractive, and I don't think he's a very good actor. Wylie, on the other hand - total cutie and a good character.

djm Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Is ER still on? Why haven't they put this show out of it's misery? It stopped being good years ago.

Eric Friedmann Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

What the hell are you so damned shocked about? Doesn't anybody else remember the pathetically-infamous Bobby Ewing resurrection on DALLAS back in 1986? It was all just a dream.

If television writers and execs took even a moments to use their brains in any logical circumstance, then TV shows probably wouldn't even exist today. Hey, now THERE'S an idea!!!

Sara Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Oh great, thanks for reminding me of that scene and how I, too, sobbed like a baby when he died. I always associate that song with that moment. I'm sorry, it may have jumped the shark years ago, but I still love ER.

bootsycolumbia Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

I have to confess, I'm not happy that Noah Wylie is coming back. I hated his character. The episode where Carter and Karev duelled over Abby was the episode that jumped the shark for me. I started watching it less and less after that. And But if Julianna Margulies and George Clooney came back, I'd be really happy. And Eric LaSalle. I always liked his character. Especially after he became a father.

littlenicola Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

Shoot - somebody beat me to the snowglobe comments. I am definitely curious as to how this will be treated. I watch the show more now out of habit than an active appreciation for the show.

Tim Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

This show should have died with Dr. Greene at least 5 years ago. NBC is so lame.

St. Elsewhere Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

Just so long as County General doesn't turn out to be a snowglobe.

Gre Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

I predict Clooney will be back in a super secret cameo. Then again, I predicted the same thing about Liam Neeson in REVENGE OF THE SITH, so what do I know?

pat Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

It reminds me of the end of Homicide:Life on the Street when all of the characters who had dies during the season were gathered in the squad room to greet Gee in the afterlife. It's cheesy but it gives the loyal fans something to latch onto. I'm all for bringing back whoever they want to include. Edwards, Wilie,Margolis, Clooney! bring 'em on!

coco Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

When Dr.Green died I cried like a baby. I was sobbing and devastated. It is the first time that a TV character death has an impact on me. It was the setting (Hawaii), the song (every time I listen it I think about that scene), the father-daughter moment,oh, it was perfectly executed.
I stopped watching two years ago, I'll be watching this season.

nycgirllms Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

Let's not forget people..Doug was not there when Carol gave birth to the twins. I know they probably couldn't get Clooney to do it but I thought it was so out of character that he wasn't there. But the Ross/Hathaway twins birth did introduce us Abby Lockhart who was a nurse in maternity ward then.

Kathleen Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

ClaireNYC - YES. James Lipton and the whole cast. That would be amazing.

Mushy alert - My mom passed away ten years ago, and one of our "things" was to watch ER every night. So I have a feeling I am going to be a weepy mess every Thursday at 10 for the next few months, but it still makes me all warm and fuzzy, especially knowing that some old characters are coming back. And Clooney better show!!

lindsay Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 07:26 AM EST

I am sooo excited!!! I love this show and never stopped watching it. I would love to see Clooney and Hathaway again, and what about the nurses and EMT crew???

stephen Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 06:08 AM EST

This is really nice to hear. So fitting and cool that we'll see the ER from 6 or 7 years ago.

Kurt Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

Jorja Fox would be a nice return. Also a moment with Glenn Headley and Noah Wylie would be a nice surprise. Plus, I think William H. Macy's character made it out of the series alive. But it Carol and Doug we all want to see. I was disappointed they didn't appear for one shot at Mark's funeral... although the episode was still fine without them.

ClaireNYC Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

Jeanie Boulet already came back in a great episode last season. I'd love to see all the regulars return, and I think a Mark Green flashback makes a lot of sense, so yay on Anthony Edwards. It became pretty clear after his death that the show was really about Carter's arc, so I'm pleased they are keeping their promise to bring Noah Wyle back. I'll never forget the episode when he took Green's stethescope from his lcoker and passed Green's advice onto Gallant (who should also come back--I smell a dream sequence!) Ming Na, Kirsten Dunst as Charlie (all grown up now!), loved when Red Buttons came back and Carter confessed. Definitely Benton, Ross, Hathaway, more Anspaugh, Weaver (maybe visiting Alan Alda's character), Bill Macy as Morgenstern for SURE, Maria Bello as well (Cooler reunion alert!) can we get Sally Field back from CBS?, if we're bringing back Edwards, Kellie Martin, too, and PLEASE, now that NBC and Bravo are one umbrella, a finale postshow roundup with James Lipton!

Luis PJ Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

Zombie Doctor or maybe a flashback.

Cheri Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

I can't even listen to that version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". It reminds me of Dr. Greene dying and I get upset all over again. I gave up the season after Noah left, and haven't watched since. I'll give it another shot this year, I guess.

sylvie Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

on the final episode of Carol's character when she goes to meet Doug (Clooney), he had previously said he hadn't been invited to participate. He's saying that again so who knows. I haven't watched much since Noah Wyle left but I'll watch the last season for sure.

Raven_Moon Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

I think it would be pretty cool to see Carter & Green, again. I would very much love to see Clooney & Julianna again. That would be fantastic.

Mags Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

I had a brain tumor in real life the same time that Dr. Mark Greene died from his. I survived - but his character holds a special place in my heart. My husband and I watched his show from Day 1, and to go through the same thing as this beloved character was hard. I'm excited that they can include him in the final season - even if only as a flashback.

Mike Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

I would love to see Dr. Greene again. As for other characters returning, how about...

Dr. Peter Benton-Eriq La Salle
Dr. Elizabeth Corday-Alex Kingston
Dr. Jeanie Boulet-Gloria Reuben
Dr. Susan Lewis-Sherry Stringfield.

Laura K. Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

I absolutely sobbed when Dr. Green died. It would be nice to see him again.

Dr. Zaius Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

Ugh Julianna must come back! She's the only regular who ever won an emmy for acting.

Bring her and Clooney back in some non-soap opera "OUR DAUGHTER IS DYING WE NEED YOUR HELP" way and that will make my year.

to meredith Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

I distinctly remember seeing this when it aired because it surprised me so - he had fallen onto the floor and was having trouble getting up, he banged the floor hard and dropped the "s" bomb.

Dr. Greene was one of my favorite characters, but damn I'm tired of Anthony Edwards making me cry every time he dies!

Ana Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I love ER!!! I will love to see that one... I'm a fan so, if Dr. Green comes back,Carter, & everybody they want to bring back.... I will love to see the story.

mscisluv Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

I've never seen a full episode of ER, but I would tune in just to see Clooney!

meredith Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

I just rewatched the clip (so sad!) and I couldn't remember or hear any swearing. Can anyone help me out?

Ceridwin Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

Since Clooney didn't return for Mark's (best friend, remember?) funeral/memorial, I highly doubt he will be here now.
But I say any and every oldtimer should return. I still love this show!

Martha Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

I'd honestly be more excited to see A.E. return from the dead in "Top Gun 2: Grumpy Old Airmen." Hey, kids, Goose didn't *really* die in that accident, it was all a dream! Then he and Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer can all be retired Navy pilots hanging around Lauderdale or Virginia Beach and pinching waitress' butts or something. Who's with me? C'mon, it'll be *awesome*.

JENNIFER Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

If Clooney doesn't show, I will be way, way bummed. But I mostly like Mark, so I'll tune in to watch him.

Kitty Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I still watch this show! Clooney showed up for Margulies' exit, I bet he makes a cameo - he's that kind of guy!

Snarf Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

Is this still on? (Sorry couldn't help myself)

BrandonK Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

How many people still watch this show?

dave lowe Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

I will defintely be there glued to my tv. His final episode where he died was only a couple of months after my father died of the same thing.

Babs Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Geez, how about a spoiler alert for those who don't know the character died?

...

*snerk* I couldn't really keep a straight face on that one. I kid!

BJohnson Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

All I can say is it better not be any St. Elsewhere crap. Or any made up flashback. Goose is dead! Greene is dead! Don't drag us back to score good ratings at the end.

charles mann Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Hell, yeah, bring back Rocket Romano! He was one of the best things on ER, back when it was a show worth watching.

mgm Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

I think of it too everytime I hear that song! I balled my eyes out when I saw that episode! I'm gonna love seeing Noah Wyle more that I would if I saw Clooney.

Melinda65 Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Well, having not watched ER for years, it doesn't really matter to me if Clooney is there or not (but I would probably watch the episode he's in, were he to return.) I'll most likely try to catch this episode, since I miss "old-school" ER. As for Iz's "Over the Rainbow," I think of that episode of ER every time I hear it.
