'America's Got Talent' recap: Who's going to win it all?

Sep 25, 2008, 08:25 AM | by Mike Bruno

Categories: 'America's Got Talent'

So, your season-long America's Got Talent recapper Jaya Saxena has left us -- left the country, in fact. I don't think it's because of this show -- or the notion that the people competing in it have more talent than any other undiscovered entertainer in our proud nation (shudder) -- but I can't say for sure. In any case, they asked me if I wanted to step into Jaya's shoes for the final couple of weeks, and I said what the hell. Full disclosure: I was not a faithful America's Got Talent viewer this season. I do, however, like singing, dancing, and violin rock-outs as much as the next person. Plus, this is the show with Hasselhoff, and I am flesh and blood after all -- love the Hoff. Let's do this.

Turns out I jumped into this puppy during, as the throaty announcer put it, "America's Got Talent... THE FINALS" -- very exciting. Following a speech on the financial crisis by President Bush that clipped 15 minutes off tonight's show (I guess we know where NBC's priorities are), Nuttin But Stringz got the party started by jamming what they described as "one of the greatest songs we ever composed." It kind of sounded like a string version of Ozzy's "Crazy Train" with a drum machine beat, but they were quite a spectacle, with that rain motif they borrowed from Rihanna's "Umbrella" video and the Cirque du Soleil trapeze work in the background. There's no denying these kids are into what they're doing, and it was all about as Vegas as you could imagine. But it was also more pomp and circumstance than talented performance, wasn't it? I think Nuttin But Stringz spent almost as much time hyping the crowd ("Come on, make some noooooise!") as they did playing the violins. Take away the flash and it was like an act you'd see performed during a timeout at a basketball game that makes you think, "Wow, that's kinda cool" as you head off to the bathroom to relieve yourself. Nevertheless, Piers went gaga and pointed out that by virtue of not being singers, the Stringz were the most unique act in the competition. The Hoff summed up his whole evaluation by simply hollering "Nuttin! But! Vegas!" Hoff rules.

Poor Donald Braswell was doomed simply based on the fact that his Finest Collection of Love Songs vocal performance had to follow violin guys' 106 & Park block party. It didn't help that he had an orange tan and a mediocre voice that screamed cruise-ship singer. Sorry, Donald. No way in hell.

Chubby opera dude Neal E. Boyd was pretty cool. He belted out those big, vibrato notes you think of when you hear the word "opera," evoking cheers from the audience and making the judges look like they might cry (or at least it that's how it was edited). I think opera dude is actually more talented than violin guys, just not nearly as entertaining. He also seems like a sweet guy, and when he teared up after the judges praised him, I thought maybe this kid has a shot at the title. But then I went back and watched the episode a second time and I saw that the show's opening included numerous past scenes of Boyd weeping and hugging and being all sensitive, so I'm guessing veteran Talent viewers are no longer giving him points for that.

Next we had Eli Mattson, who had me worried that his rendition of Phil Collins "Against All Odds" would be about as exciting as, well, an amateur singer doing a Phil Collins cover. Turns out there's something kind of intriguing about him, though, right? He has that skinny-white-boy-at-the-piano thing going on -- like a poor man's Chris Martin -- and his voice sounds a lot like Elton John. Piers pretty much nailed it when he said there's something distinctive about Mattson, even though, overall, I was kinda meh about the whole thing -- mostly because of the aforementioned Phil Collins factor. But my wife said Mattson was cute and that she liked him the best (while Sharon sounded like she wanted to jump the kid), so I'm thinking cutie piano man could pull this off.

Finally, we had Queen Emily, who I was really rooting for after her heartfelt speech about winning the show being her destiny and her sincere desire to pour every ounce of herself into this final performance. Sadly, she just simply doesn't have the goods. Mostly, she seemed like a decent singer trying too hard and playing out of her league. Maybe her raspy, soulful voice would've sounded better on an old Motown joint, rather than Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time," but in the end I just don't think she has the juice to take this thing home. The judges seemed to agree with me, saying things like "whether you win or not." That's definitely not a phrase you wanna hear in the finals.

So there it is. I personally kind of dig Boyd, but if I had to guess I'd say it's between Nuttin But Stringz and Eli Mattson. Pretty apples and oranges, those two acts, which means it could probably just come down to the demographic of the viewers watching -- do Talent viewers tend to dig Coldplay or are they more of Ludacris type of crowd? At any rate, I'm pretty confident next week's winner will be one of those two. Which means that Queen Emily will probably win by a landslide.

I thought that Elli should have won it hands-down actually. I thought that Nutin but stingz was good, but they had some type of attitude that showed through. I think that sent them home. A lack of humility perhaps. I would not pay to see an Opera Singer as well. He has talent but I would not pay to see him- sorry

DENISE Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

You know I am so incredibly disappointed. I take a trip to Vegas once sometimes twice a year and I wouldn't pay to see opera....Nothin' but Strings was the group that I would pay top dollar to go and see...something new something different. I think this guy just won out of sympathy votes! Come on America - BORING!

Hot Rod Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

All I have to say is: I thought this was a show about Americas Got Talent. We all know that America can sing. Every year a person that sings win. When they chose Nuthin but Strings to leave, that was so bias. They are different, and I can't believe that they are off. This has become a spin off joke to American Idol.

calstategirl51 Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

ELI MATTSON all the way. He deserves to win. His performaances are different from week to week. I always thought NBS played the same piece throughout the competition. I can't even hear any classical composition in their pieces. It's all hip-hop and rapping.

Ivan Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

Nuttin But Stringz and Neal Boyd!!!!

vin Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Nbs is by far the best talent. All original music. All the other singers are kareoke type singers. I've seen and heard many kareoke singers do just as good, if not better. There are plenty of people with the same sobby stories in the world. It's a talent show not a soap opera drama show,And or kareoke show. Just keeping it real.

SDBURG Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

I am still puzzled as to why the judges and everyone else keeps talking about what act would do best in Las Vegas. There is a ONE time only show in Las Vegas on Oct. 17th. That's it. It will showcase the winner and other acts that were in the show. Go to AGT web page for the info. Otherwise there is no gig for the winner in Las Vegas unless they get it on their own like Terry Fator did. Or is there something I didn't hear regarding a gig in Vegas besides the one million dollar prize??

Corrine Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 02:41 AM EST

I've been very disappointed in America's Got Talent this year. First of all, they spent so long covering auditions that viewers didn't get to see a whole lot of the top acts and really get to know any of them. We also didn't get to see them grow and mature like we did last year. It's like, "Who cares who wins?" Although all five acts have merit, none of them excite me like Terry and Cass both did last year. I'm also very tired of watching the judges promote certain acts over others. The winner is supposed to be the choice of the American public, not Piers Morgan. I think the quality of this show has seriously gone down hill. As for who will win... It all depends on how many believe Piers and vote for Nuttin' but Strings. There's no way I'd pay my hard-earned money to go watch any of them in Vegas. Sorry!

Barb Galloway Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

Danielle, you are right that Sharon has been very rude to Donald Braswell. Pretending to be so sweet while telling him he is "nice", his voice is "nice", and that she doesn't think his singing is relevant. Is real talent and a beautiful voice not relevant anymore?

bambi jo miller Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

i have been with out electricity for 14 days because of ike was glad to see what happened.all of them are great. can't wait to see next show i think it is oct.1 keep me up dated thanks pasadena, texas

MaryE Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

Steve, I agree with you about Sharon. What does she have against Donald? I think some of her remarks were out and out rude and uncalled for.Oh well,he takes it like the man that he is.

MaryE Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

Steve, I agree with you about Sharon. What does she have aganist Donald? I think some of her remarks were out and out rude and uncalled for.Oh well,he takes it like the man that he is.

Gabrielle Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Nuttin But Stringz is engaging in that Riverdance kind of way: classic entertainment brought up to date, but also very repetitive. I like watching them for about 5 minutes (just long enough to wait for a subway train and throw a buck into their case) and then I start to snooze.

Eli gives a much more satisfying performance (I think I've watched his Walkin in Memphis video about 5 times now, and I actually voted for him twice, something I have never done for any talent performer), but he's not so glitzy.

Unfortunately, glitz may win for Vegas. But at least Eli has launched his career on a national stage and he has staying power.

As for the other contestants... who are they again??

Susie Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

Top three: Eli, Neal, and NBS. They have been my top choices from the beginning for one obvious reason: regardless of if they win this competition, they will all have wonderful careers! I expect to purchase Eli's first CD and hope to see him in concert; If I ever get to Vegas-NBS would be a top choice of show to shell out the bucks on; and Neal will be in demand for an operatic lead, better go buy my season tickets to the opera! Good job guys! Well done!

Arto Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I saw America's Got Talent for the first time this week. Nothing But Strings were cleraly head and shoulders above the rest of the acts but I wouldn't pay my hard earned money on tickets for them either. Last time I was in Las Vegas I saw the broadway show, Mama Mia, Celine Dion in concert, and Cirque De Soliel. None of these AGT performers are ready to go to LV and contend with those types of shows. It's basically a very weak adaptation of American Idol.

Ken0021 Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Ok... Besides Braswell's daughter's coming to his defense at the top of the page... I agree with the bulk of the posts. 1. Eli, just because he is interesting 2. Neal, he has the pipes 3. NBS, can't sing or even shout well, but dang they are entertaining, 4. Queen Emily, only because she can sing.. should do a blues album and SORRY 5. Braswell. I hate it but he is the same each time and I don't buy the vocal chord damage story. Sorry, sounds like a used car salesman to me.

Great show though. First time I have watched all the episodes. Love the honesty of the British guy. Wanted Caitlyn Mayer to take it but he was right, it would be too much for her.

chris Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Hey everyone what a show! NBS & eli have my vote.Im young and love hard rock but all 3 of these young guns deserve to be there.NBS has the better part of my vote as they are true performers and the music from those strings is true, true talent.Eli will also be a sucess regardless of the outcome.I wont be impartcial, and will say the same for NBS.Good luck to both just cant wait.

Tom W. Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

NBS is absolutely boring. Every song is the same. Neal and Queen sing out of tune. Donald is the same emotion on every song. Eli is pleasant, but I wouldn't spend money to see him. Not yet anyway. The entire show was a freak show until the final ten. Get rid of David H. Piers is out in the night on NBS.

Cindy Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Is it just me, or does anyone else find Nuttin But Strings annoying? Two screeching violins emitting the same riff over and over again, against the backdrop of screaming, hip-hop and smoke machines. I’m not saying these guys don’t have some talent, but their act just doesn’t appeal to me. I do enjoy Neal’s and Donald’s singing, however and would probably pay to see them in Vegas.

Jean M Johnson Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

How dare you say that Donald Braswell's woice is mediocre, he has the BEST voice in the competition, range, control and tone. You obviously have not heard much of his music. Listen to his cd "New Chapter" is FANTASTIC. On that cd he sings opera better than Neal. Did you go back and listen to all the performances in the show? If you stepped into this review position that is what you should have done. Listen to Music Of The Night and Impossible Dream. How many other performers have turned an audience around on this program? Only Donald Braswell.

sue Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

A voice like Neal Boyd's comes around once in a lifetime. Now that is true TALENT.

Ronald J LeMin Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

eli mattson is the best. when he sang phil collons it gave me chills. cant white to get his cd. it will not be long his fan Ronald J Lemin

Steve Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

I want to know what Sharon has against Donal Braswell. She never has a semi good comment for him. I don't think he'll win, but I thinke he's 2 or 3. I'm pulling for Neal .Eli is ok and NBS seem to perform the same thing ever night with different back ups.Emily seems fake to me and conned her way through the early rounds with her tears. I'm for NEAL.

paul benton Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

nuttin but strings does nuttin but the same act every week with different backdrops
come on one leans back and the other one screams
eli will get a contract and make a living

Mike Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:06 AM EST

The judges annointed NBS as the winners. They were the first to perform. I guess the other 4 people should have just gone home. That was unfair. I think that Neal has the best God given talent and I hope that he wins. Neal, your the best. Good luck.

rhinoceros Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:43 PM EST

Compared to last year this has all been hyped and disappointing - sorry to say I really wouldn't want to see any of them live for 2 hours. I wish them all luck, but next year, can we please find some performers with genuine charisma, instead of just back stories?

Pink Abby Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

I went to school with Eli Mattson, and he is just an ordinally, polite, and talented individual. He has my vote all the way!

Marsha Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:21 PM EST

I am a 51 year old woman and I just love Nuttin But Strings. They are talented on the violins but there is also something very special about those young men. I am very proud of them

Rudybear Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

Eli has it all. He is the only one who can sustain a 90 minute show without boring the audiance to death

yvette Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

nutting but strings and eli wer superb

youmeandthree Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Last night I thought was entertaining in a "shut off your brain and don't think" type of way. I agree that it will come down between Eli and NBS. The remaining three are competing between themselves for the rest of the votes. Although I find NBS quite talent, once again, they showed me nothing new. That was an original song?? Ummmmm....I couldn't tell what it was other than redundant. Didn't they play the same song the last three weeks. I certainly couldn't tell the difference. And they spent a large portion of the song NOT PLAYING...rather they jumped around stage and yelled at the crowd to get up and get ready...WTF??? The OTT 8 notes they play got on my last nerve. No way could I listen to more than maybe a couple songs from them in a concert before I left. If you've seen one performance from them you have seen them all.

Eli got my votes last night...great attitude, humble, extremely talented and who knew such a hawtie lay beneath that cap!!

Margaret Marshall Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

I like a lot Nutting but Strings but I loooooooooooooooooooooove Eli!!!!! He is so unique...well I guess they should share the first price!!!!!
Anyhow they are already on the go!!!!

april_xf Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

I'm a 41 year old woman and I LOVE Nuttin' But Stringz. They have more than proved they can play, the opening to the top 5 performance was so haunting and then to segue into the hip-hop style and then finish it off right back to a gentle softness. I'm just in awe. The should and they deserve to win, of course I was hoping for a Jonathan Burkin and NBS showdown,(and I would have been torn in that instance) but alas the voting public must think singing is the only talent out there.

baby girl!! Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

I thought nuttin but strings killed it lastnite.. These two young Latino men gave the audience a good show!! Thx god they went first cause everyone that came after them just bored me to death!! These 2 stars are clearly the winners!!! Nuttin but strings ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck!! By the way ya are soooo handsome....

Dave Balz Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Strings was nuttin but hype. Eli has it all. Overall I was very disappointed that the FINAL was more of an NBC promo for it's fall lineup commercial after ad after ad. And next year, lose the Springer spaz.

baxter Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

No great talent here. Everyone's got a gimick. From Donald Braswell and his severed vocal chords to Queen Emily and Neal Boyd with their convenient tears. I wouldn't spend Las Vegas dollars on any of them !!!

Dennis Pike Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Eli is the complete package. He is more than a singing piano player...he seems to be one with the instrument, great emotion and a wonderful performance.

dannah Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I like the judges. Especially pierce. My daughter says he's mean, but I think he just wants to keep it real. All of these final five should win. They're all good.

Ken Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Eli Mattson has it in the bag. He has had it from his first audition. Go Eli!

Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Thanks for the clips EW - missed the show. Seems pretty clear it should be Nuttin but Stringz. Boyd and Braswell re-did songs they'd already done and QEmily and Mattson were okay, but I think they lack the dynamism it for Vegas. Nice to Mattson has hair. Eli's not Vegas, but he should get a record gig out of this thing.

Thats funny about what you said about nuttin but strings. For the last 2 years I've seen them perform at half time at the Nets basketball games. They always got a good response from the crowd. It will be interesting to see if they perform this year.

carol murphy Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

It's too bad there can be only one winner. I think this year
had excellent talent. They should all head line Las Vegas
in one show, now that would be brilliant to do. Think who
could see them there? I think it should be Eli Matteson has
the hole package. Strings are excellent but, what else can
why do?

Stephanie T. Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Mattson and Strings are going to be the final two and Boyd will be third. I am not sure what Piers and crew heard from the stage but Emily was all over the place and pitchy. The song was too strong for her vocal ability.

Joel Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

while donald is good, he's not great. queen emily is entertaining but i couldn't stand an hour and a half of her screaming. the remaining 3 could all win and i'd pay to see them in vegas but my favorite is eli matson. nutn' but string is awesome and will have a show or tour regardless but eli is talented and a good story. only past revealed on the show is that he went from club to club just to make ends meet, nothing specific. just like many small time musicians. neal is awesome and will have a hit or 2 on the radio but again an hour and a half of yelling, no thanks. give me eli or the violins.

jean of ohio Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I HOPE DONALD WINS. I LIKE HIM ALOT.
HE HAS BEEN THRU SO MUCH,ANYBODY WHO HAS BEEN THRU WHAT HE HAS DESERVES TO WIN.IF HE DON'T HE IS ALREADY A WINNER.MAY GOD BLESS YOU DONALD.

RCA Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Neal has this one, however I would like to a Vegas show with Queen Emily opening the show and Neal as the head liner. What a show that would be, cha ching $$$$$$$.

Chris Croxton Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

This is a indirect question, Where can I find an application for a chance to appear on "America's Got Talent" ?

Thank you,
Chris...

labgirl Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I voted for Donald Braswell. He has been my favorite story all year - I feel like he can win since the fans brought him back in the first place. Remember last year the judges told Terry Fator that they didn't think a ventriloquist could win & the american voters totally proved them wrong. Nuttin'But Strings are talented but all their songs sound the same to me. I would like to hear more of their violin talent. It is overshadowed by everything else that is going on. I like everyone else - I wouldn't be sad if they won. But I am pulling for Donald - especially since Piers & Sharon totally dissed him last night.

Dee Infante Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Although Nuttin But Strings seemed very entertaining, there was a lot of rapping going on....the most talented one is Neil Boyd....spectacular voice and such charisma..

Nancy Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

My vote is Donald Braswell. His voice is so wonderful and he overcame 14 years of illiness to get to this point.

KATHY ROMANO Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

I happen to think Nothin but Stringz
rocks. Would love to see them live but my vote would go to Neal Boyd. The man has a most wonderful voice and
personality. He deserves to win the
whole talent contest. The man has
got what it takes in the music (opera)
industry. Best of luck Neal!!!!

Jackie Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Eli has not put focus on his past, which is extremely smart. That way the audience is voting on talent rather than story.

But I remember from his audition that he would work in clubs just enough to get that next bus ticket. Basically, living off of his talent and not getting outside support.

sam Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

What an idiotic review. Come on, Mike. Do some homework before you go off blasting everyone. All performers did well. Some better than others. Definitely better talent than you will ever see and hear at local talent shows and maybe even some professional events. Eli needs to be recording now. I'll buy his music.

jammom05 Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Eli's troubled past has nothing to do with his talent. Coming from a family member (although distant) I don't understand why that should be the focus. He is an extremely talented young man, that is what people should pay attention to, not the problems he may have had in life before the show.

danielle Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

I didn't think any of the acts gave their best performances last night. But I wouldn't count out Donald Braswell. Sharon was downright rude to him last night, which was uncalled for given it was the finals and America obviously likes the guy enough to keep voting him through. He has a huge fanbase to get him the wildcard spot a few weeks back, so maybe Sharon's rudeness will win him some extra votes. I know I voted for him because of it, just to spite the obvious NBS bias.

Dee Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I doubt if any of the singers this year could captivate a Las Vegas audience or entice them to spend their money to see their show. Which leaves Nuttin but Strings. No matter how you look at it these guys have energy and talent.

Shellybean Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Skinny - I don't recall hearing anything about Eli's past either, which I'm glad of, enough with all the tears. Maybe he has tried getting a record deal and all doors closed to him. Just a guess.

Shellybean Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

The judges only gave a standing ovation to Nuttin But Strings. While they are very talented, I know I wouldn't pay to see 90 minutes of it.

My favorite is Eli and he has been since his first audition. Altough, I wish he would have picked a different song.

IMO, Eli and Nuttin But Strings got the most applause from the audience. So I think it will be one of them to win. Hopefully Eli.

Skinny Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

Can somebody remind me what Eli's troublesome background is? They alluded to it last night but, at least when I was watching, I didn't catch what his troubles have been. Thanks!

Melinda65 Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

I dropped this show weeks ago, because I was sick of the manipulation by the bad editing, not to mention the prodigious lack of actual talent in most of the acts. Mike, your recap was entertaining enough to almost make me want to watch the last show. Almost.

Cindy Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

I still believe that Neal Boyd is indeed the most talented out of the final five and he should win. However, the judges seem to favor Nuttin But Strings, even though they played the same 16 notes over and over and over again in their final performance. The sounds coming from their violins actually hurt my ears. I'm rooting for Neal because as one poster previously said - he gives me goosebumps. Only time will tell.
