'90210': Schoolyard sex too much for TV's 'family hour'?

Sep 3, 2008, 12:35 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Hell to the no!, Television, Those Crazy Kids!, You know you're getting old when...

Ethan_l Am I the only one who was aghast at seeing, just four minutes into last night's premiere of 90210, two teens having oral sex in the school parking lot? Okay, we didn't actually see a sex act, but we saw newly arrived Kansan emigré Annie spotting her old beau Ethan (Dustin Milligan, pictured) through the windshield of his parked car as he sat in the driver's seat, and then we witnessed Annie's horror as she saw his partner's head popping up from below the dashboard. (This was the pilot episode's "We're Not in Kansas Anymore" moment — which, not coincidentally, was the episode's title.)

Now, I realize the new 90210 has to make a splash on the CW, a network that also airs Gossip Girl (and in this regard, it seems to have succeeded, according to early ratings estimates, drawing better numbers than the GG season 2 premiere the night before and holding most of its audience for all two hours of the pilot). And I realize that the show's creators must have wanted a "This is not your parents' 90210" moment in there in order to seem cutting edge. (Even returning 90210 alumnae Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty told EW they found the moment shocking enough to make original 90210 producer Aaron Spelling spin in his grave.) Still, this scene was kinda gratuitous, no? For plot purposes, Annie needed to see Ethan cheating on his girlfriend Naomi, but spotting the illicit pair making out would have worked just as well, as illustrated later in the episode where Naomi seeks revenge merely by kissing Ethan's lacrosse teammate. Besides, the offending incident aired just minutes after 8 p.m. (Or, for many viewers, 7 p.m.) Here's a show clearly designed to attract both kids and their parents who watched the original show back in the Mesozoic Era 1990s, and here was a situation that would surely make both kids and their parents wince and squirm if they were watching together.

Am I being a Parents Television Council prude here? Is this really no big deal, just a matter-of-fact depiction of the way many teens start off their school day? Or were you taken aback as well? And do you think the shock tactics will continue past the pilot, or have the writers made their point, leaving only relatively tame content, in the vein of the pilot's second hour, from now on?

90210 Lover Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

I think its ridiculous how you people have no lives but to sit here and comment on a television show. If you actually watch the show you would see it has nothing to do with sex. If ever person was like you people commenting on here, no show would make ratings. I say you people need to get a life.

John Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

I watched the clip on YouTube and didn't see what all of the fuss was about - the music was hokey at best, and we should all remember that TV IS NOT REAL LIFE. We watch it to 'escape' from the real world, in which students rarely drive Ferraris and Lamborghinis or have oral sex right before going to class! Geez!!! ;-)

Brandon Ladner Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

I am only 15 and I agree. When I heard that this series was coming on Mum went out and bought the first two seasons of the original...NOTHING like this!
I think, that if this keeps going on it will reach a higher rating and it's not going to reach their target audience.

It's the CW that are doing this, they get skinny girls, blowjobs in the parking lot, dry sex gang bangs, what'll be next? Graphic sex in the shower? I wouldn't rule it out. I have no idea what happened in the last episode because I live in Australia and we had our football brownlow awards so it didn't air...but I will see it next week and I have an idea of what to expect. The O.C wasn't even this bad.

90210 has stepped over so many boundaries and if they don't stop it's dead.

Belinda Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

oh, yeah...
i didnt even watch the show! I saw a clip of that scene and decided at that moment I was not going to tune in and give them their ratings. I have a 16 yr old daughter, and even though they know what's up and things like this are happening, it does not mean I have to condone it and I do not like that this kind of stuff seems to be constantly put into their heads. What you put into your head daily is what comes out (of your thoughts, heart, words, actions); no wonder there are so many teen pregnancies, sexual assaults, rapes, child molesters, etc.
Look around--that is what society sees and hears all around them! The days when they wouldnt dare put that kind of scene on TV or sexual stuff on the radio there were alot less divorces, more obediant children, and evident morals with people in general (or so it seemed)

Belinda Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

I totally agree! I think it is ridiculous that everything has to be about sex these days! Sex and innuendos are on TV sitcoms, commercials, music, ads, movies, billboards, and sex has become casual conversation and acts amongst our kids at a very early age. To think this show is aimed toward high school age makes me so mad. What message do they think is being sent! Things like this tell teens that this is what they do in HS and it is totally ok. I cannot express my frustration enough about how sexuality is portrayed in the media and the age group that is watching and hearing it on a daily basis. Geeze, a Red Bull commercial is on at this very moment and even that is sexual! What the heck man...

ll Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

i agree that it was a bit gratuitous...but not over the top...i mean it lasted for less than fifteen seconds and was implied more by movement and shocked looks than anything. but i do disagree that spotting the pair making out would have worked just as well. her (and the audience's) shocked reaction hinges on the gross icky factor that the nice boy she seemed to be so friendly with years ago was getting a bj in his car in front of school in broad daylight. she had never met his girlfriend at the time so if she saw him making out with a girl she (and we) would have assumed that was his girlfriend. and while walking in on the couple making out would be awkward there is nothing essentially too inappropriate about a couple making out (in that setting) so it would not have ellicited the same reaction that the bj scene received. however, maybe 8:00 is a bit early for that kind of action...even on the cw.

rob Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Just look at everything on TV or Movies, there are no boundaries, TV is littered from dusk to dawn with an onslaught of male genatalia jokes, male genatalia on, and on and on,
I am 43--this has gotten so bad it is revolting -it is now the norm to use language of any kind any place in front of anyone. The FCC is a joke. It has gotten to the point of OLD. I served 14 years in the military and never heard have the stuff I here on TV, look at where are culture has gone?? South Park ? The Comedy Channel, Sex in the City ? --Just stick with baseball games or something , maybe AMC turn the rest of it off

Daniel Semsen Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

It was too much, for sure.

kill bill Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

one of two entities influences the owner of the media who puts this in front of the minds of children and young people. guess which one

sarah j Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

I don't think anyone's worried about the 6 year olds. It's the junior high kids who know what oral sex is, and see that kids are doing it on tv. I admit, I probably had sex too soon because I watched all the kids on the first version of 90210 doing it. Donna was portrayed as being weird for being a virgin. Yeah, I think we should be worried about a show aimed at young adults showing oral sex on a major network at 8:00.

m Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

parents need to realize that this stuff is GOING ON NOW! heck, i was in high school 20 years ago, and there were gals blowing boys in the parking lot THEN...as parents, we need to TALK to our teens about this, how to handle it, and whether or not it is acceptable for them, NOT pretend it's not happening. cuz it IS. and sitting at home with your fingers in your ears saying 'LALALAI'MNOTLISTENING" isn't helping anyone.

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

i watched it with my 6 yr old sis. dont think she understood the scene at all. dont see it as a prob.

Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

Do you wonder why women and children are the victims of sexual crimes? Take a look at these television shows and movies that portray sex and crime. Come on writers, producers and directors! Not everyone out there is sane, and you know it. And you contribute to the insanity going on, by planting in their minds thoughts of what "they" will and can do to others because of what "they" get turned on by seeing. Where's the respect and believe in God and all that is "good?" You hypocrites! In way or another, you assisted in a crime against a woman and or a child.

Fed-up Parent Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

If you're concerned about this, then please file an indecency complaint online with the FCC at:

http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm?

Lana Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

I've sat behind writers on the sets of TV shows where the topic was, "How far can we take this without the 'groups' coming down on us". Perhaps it's time the writers find out how far they can't go.

Dave Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:57 AM EST

Unfortunatly, ya, this type of stuff goes on in school. Has been for a long time. And I grew up in the 70's. But I do think showing a situation like that on a show like this where younger impressionable preteens are watching is just a BAD MOVE.

spmsmith Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

I don't think anyone's shocked and appalled that blowjobs happen, and hey, maybe they do happen at 15. (Judging from the teenagers I know, I think this is more fantasy than reality for most of them, but whatever.) It's the ratio of girl-serving-boy to boy-serving-girl that concerns me. It's just part of a bigger picture teaching teenage girls that the largest part of their worth and identity, and therefore what they should be most concerned with, is how freaky they're willing to get with the boys.

If they'd shown two teenagers talking about sex rationally and thoughtfully, and then engaging in oral sex where *each* partner sexes up the other one in joy, and love, and with an eye to safety, that would absolutely be something worth putting on television (whether overt or covert). It's the whole American attitude of "Sex!Sex!Sex!WantSex! - but remember, it's dirty and shocking" that's so damned frustrating. I don't mind seeing sex on my television screen, but can't it be *positive* sex?

jabby Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Absolutely not a 7yr. old should should not watch this show after last nights episode. In the past channel 4 has been child friendly and I am saddened by their choice to change their lineup of programs. We should all write the station and at least protest the hour that this show is being shown. How does every one feel about this? I bet we ould fill out an online petition.Personnally I think this should be in the 10:oop.m. timeslot. Thanks for listening.

just a thought... Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

Too bad it has to rely on shock-value to get ratings...It was stupid and shallow the first time, and now is stupid, shallow, and obscene. Surprized? No, not really. They aren't the brat-pack, they are just generation-xxx-er's!

jr Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

did not see it, but the issue of making it known in news medias has peaked my interest.

Liz Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

A 7 year old watching this show? Even without the initial and unnecessary shocking scene of Ethan in the car, do you think 7 year olds (boy or girls) should be watching this show?
Also, the nutrition (or lack of nutrition) message send to young viewers is terrible!

Stef Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

Since you mentioned that Shannen and Jennie found it shocking, no, you're not the only one. I thought it was pretty ridiculous too. It was a really awkward scene that was obviously going for "edgy" and landed at "trying way too hard". When I was 15, I was a pretty big prude and I probably would have had no idea what was going on!

Mary Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

That is sick!! What is this world coming to? Is there no innocence anymore?! I feel so bad that this is the type of entertainment we are giving to our children. They will be leading this nation someday. Just sad. Everybody is turning into perverts. Turn to God people, or he will destroy this Nation.

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

I agree with those who say that this type of thing is totally offensive and over-the-line for fifteen-year-olds (for that matter, I have no interest in watching adults do it either). To those who say get with the times, if these trashy scenes are so hip and contemporary, how come they are SOOOOOOO archaically and outrageously sexist, i.e., always girl-on-boy? Fine thing we're teaching our girls--forget your own sensitivity/needs/self-respect, honey, you're nothing but a sex tool for guys to use/abuse!

jabby Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I think we all need to remember this hour alot of small children are still watching tv as my granddaughter was. She is only 7 yrs. old and had been very excited about this show due to all the previews. I did not see this. I only just saw the inappropriatnas on this page and will certainly let her mom know about it. I think it should be on at a much later time slot or be much tamer for our childer. It has nothing to do with being a PRUDE!

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I agree, it was a bit much.
Kind of like trying too hard.

ak Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

Yes, other shows have violence, and I'm aware of that...that's why I don't watch most of them!! I was wanting to watch 90210, thinking it might be like the way it was when I was younger. I thought it would have fresh faces and new topics/plots, but was not anticipating a BJ thrown in my face!

Till Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

I still don't understand why so much people are more aghast by suggested 'sex scenes' than by violent scenes. Torture, gratuitous violence, blood scenes (so common in shows like CSIs, Criminal Minds,...) are less shocking for you than supposed oral sex? Come on, don't be so prude. (An advice: don't watch 'Skins', you could be more than aghast!)

ak Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

Althought this might be something that teenagers are doing and be a popular thing, that doesn't make it right! Having it portrayed on TV at 8pm where many kids are going to see it, (and parents too being all nostalgic) only makes kids think, "see, it is something that is done by most kids and must be okay, it's on TV"

I was only watching it with my husband, thankfully, but even still "I" don't feel comfortable with that being portrayed on TV. Put that stuff in cable movies or something, not on regular TV at 8pm!

JerseyGirl Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Did anyone actually like the show? I saw 20 minutes and had to turn it off. In those 20 minutes there were about 5 cheesy overplayed plot lines that I could spot a mile away. And talking with my mother, sister, and best friend, none of them liked it either.

rockgolf Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

If these kids are 15, how are they driving to school? Completely inappropriate for the time slot, but tame compared to TV in most of the world.

80224 Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

@Kathleen - if you missed it on Tuesday, I think it's on again tonight (Thursday).

Mat Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Sadly this is the state of teenagers today. Having worked at night clubs that have 18+ nights you'd be suprised at what goes on. *****Most of your daughters are doing exactly what that girl was doing in the opening scene and worse.***** It's time to wake up parents, you're children aren't as innocent as you would love to believe.

Sandy Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

Very inappropriate! We were not happy to see the show start out that way. What a huge dissapointment to begin a "family hour" like that. And no, not good to be watching with your teen during this.

VID Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

there was nothing especially gratuitous about the scene. It was brief, not graphic whatsoever, and fellatio does happen people. Every day, all the time, everywhere. Deal with it.

Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Too bad 90210 couldn't take a lesson from "The secret life of the american teen" a show that portrays high school sex AND ITS CONSEQUENCES. Finding the gratuitous sex scene inapropriate isn't puritanical its sensible.

bootsycolumbia Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

You aren't being a prude. Very disappointing debut. The producers are trying way too hard to be controversial, and all they are is pathetic. The blow job was ridiculous and gratuitous, and the rest of the premiere was recycled storylines from other, better shows like The O.C. Too bad Shenae Grimes left Degrassi to be on this. I hope she has a chance to come back.

I'm a fan of the original (still watch re-runs) and wasn't planning on watching just because I feared they would turn the remake into a sexed out, trashy show..(thinking the OC) Now after reading all this I REALLY have no desire to get caught up in that crap. My time is too precious to be wasted that way.

I am saddened that this is what is being marketed to kids these days. Edgy does not mean shocking. Let's have a little bit of responsibility in TV land and cut out the gratuitous sex acts. What a shame on the CW. You're a trash heap of stupid, sexed-up garbage.

this is way out of line. Real life or not - and this is mostly not - the fact is if we are to ever imagine there is a future for this country and our kids, we need to stop this kind of hedonistic instant gratifiication brain-washing BS. TV may imitate life, but kids imitate tv, and this is wrong. The network should be spanked Hard.

I didn't watch it because I knew about that scene beforehand. Gross. And if it's "ok" to be skanky, than it's certainly ok to be a prude.

The problem here is that the fans who were teenagers when the original premiered are a full 18 years older than the kids who are watching it now are. I know a lot of the 30/40+ people are shocked by this, but you're forgetting that explicit sexual talk is a formative aspect of our generation. We were 12 years old when the Lewinsky scandal happened so oral sex is as American as apple pie to us. Add to that the premiere of "Sex and the City," the final word on uninhibited female sexual expression, which also coincided with the start of our teenage years and you have an entire generation to whom sexual depiction and discussion is mundane.

I agree that Annie's ridiculously paltry lunch of a tiny Styrofoam bowl with a few lettuce leaves in it (not one of which she ate on-screen!) is the real problem here.
