You can keep your copy of 'Twilight' -- I have the N to keep me company

Queenbee_l My coworkers keep trying to get me to crack open Twilight, but I have no time to devote to the vampire series. Filling the young adult pop culture void for me (especially with Gossip Girl gone until September) is the N, Nickelodeon's wiser, saucier relative. Its days are filled with a winning combination of original programming, old-school favorites, and Canadian teen soap operas -- enough to keep me and my DVR abuzz through the wasteland that is August TV.

For me, it started with an episode of Degrassi. If the hit Canadian show allowed me to relive my youth in 30-minute blocks, then Beyond the Break was more about entertaining a fantasy -- a fantasy that, for this Syracuse, New York, native, meant living vicariously through a bunch of 20-year-old surfers in Hawaii. About a Girl and The Best Years covered college, and South of Nowhere was there in case I needed to fantasize about roaming my high school halls, gossiping and giggling once more.

Special to their summer lineup, the N has taken the cue from major networks and introduced viewers to fresh reality TV show competitions: Queen Bees (pictured) features seven mean girls that would make the Plastics cringe; while in The N's Student Body, groups of overweight students from rival schools compete to lose weight and stay healthy. With Laila Ali as the host with a Cat Deeley-like compassion for the contestants, you'll feel their plight and the burn from that last lap.

If you don't have a TV package that allows you instant access to Degrassi and friends, you can watch full episodes of many of the shows on www.The-N.com. Are any of my TV-aholic PWers as smitten as I am with the network? I know there are legions of Degrassi-philes out there -- has your interest in that show spurred on a similar love affair with the N?

I love the Twilight series AND Degrassi- but they aren't a fair comparison since they share no similar plot points other then using high school as an occassional backdrop.
I love that Degrassi doesn't shy away from things other 'teen' shows do- Hannah Montana would be a heck of a lot more realistic if they had her discussing forms of birth control compared to wacky hijinx kids haven't engaged in since they stopped wearing...well, clothes branded with Hannah Montana.
And Twilight...What can I say, it's one of my fave books and I've hooked at least 5 people on the series with more converts to follow ^.^

um whatever, twilight books are amazing they are better then television and i LOVE the N and i watch it EVERY day but i also ADORE the twilight series and i can re-read them for my SECOND TIME and still watch plenty enough television. so obvioulsy your to stupid to multi task and all you do is sit on your lazy butt and watch television all day but if you actually opened the book instead of criticising you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT, then you would think differently. and everyone who read it and DIDNT like it, your strange. so yeah, twilight is worth missing and hour of television a day. get over yourself :)

"the N, Nickelodeon's wiser, saucier relative."

Oh, how I wish that were still true. I read this article where the writer made the astute quote, "The N is like HBO's younger, precocious sister." That's what I loved about The N. Pardon me for using their overused tagline, but The N "went there" with their original shows and I loved that. They had shows like Degrassi, South of Nowhere and Whistler that weren't scared to push the envelope. Now it seems since they launched 24/7 they've shyed away from that. Now you'll mostly find crappy tween shows from their sister network Nick like Zoey 101, Unfabulous and Ned's Declassified. While I'm a reality tv junkie, I don't wanna see reality shows at the expense of the good shows they had like The Best Years, Beyond the Break and Whistler. They're canceling all these good shows and diverging from the edgy content that made them popular and going for cookie-cutter fare that attracts the Disney viewers. That's why I now mostly watch ABC Family!

Bloody hell, drop everything else! Twilight is absolutely worth your time & I wouldn't have said that until I read it myself.

i love the-n. i've been watching degrassi: the next generation, since it's inception and now i'm 21 years old. plus, queen bees is genius and i can't wait for south of nowhere to come back. i love the way they portray lgbt issues in such a realistic way.

You're not missing out on anything if you're not reading Twilight, thanks. Twilight is basically a relatively good piece of fanfic that plays on teenage girls' hormones and fantasies in order to get them to love it, but afterwards a hidden peice of them realizes that they just got a lot more dumb and tasteless after reading it.

THANK YOU LISA...for being one of the few ew.com employees who is NOT trying to make me love "Twilight" I read it and thought it was not so great - certainly not the next HP!!!

Mary Cullen Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Yeah, just realized that was a little harsh. The N isn't that bad-definitely better than the crappy stuff on the Disney Channel, I just really don't like GG and love Twilight and I can get a bit touchy...
*sighs* sorry...

Mary Cullen Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

Wow, you actually watch Gossip Girl? I mean, the books were ok, sure but the show? I just "don't have any time to devote" to that show or the N-what with reading the first book in the Twilight series 6 times alone. The stupid CW spends all their freaking money promoting GG and barely any promoting the best show that they have-SUPERNATURAL. and Degrassi USED to be good but it isn't anymore. I'll stick with Twilight thank you very much.

Meg Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Stick with the N, Lisa. If you're like me (a 19-year-old girl who theoretically should be in the Twilight demographic), Twilight will only piss you off and make you wish you had just watched a Degrassi marathon. For real though, I love those shows... they make me relive the drama of high school from the safety of my couch!

Chismism Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

I love the N, and I am a 25 year old college student. It brings to life the inner tween, where I can laugh, and cry as we go through the horrible Junior High years together! Love blog entry!

elena Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

I got hooked on Degrassi first, but that's become way overplayed. When the original kids graduated, that's when it was over for me. Alex and Paige = greatest high school love story ever. Anyways, Beyond the Break and The Best Years (which was the BEST. why did they cancell that thing? the girl who played Sam was phenomenal!) soon followed...and who could forget Instant Star?
I hope Alexz comes out with a rockin' solo cd to make up for my sadness at the fourth season of Instant Star ending. I dare you to find music better than that on Instant Star. I'm talking to you, Disney Channel and American Idol...

Sam Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

Bring back Whistler!!!!!

joules Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

What was that animated show about "The Weirdness"? That was funny, in a post-Daria way. The only other show I watch on The N is South of Nowhere. I thought this show was good for its frank portrayal of Spenser's exploration of her sexuality, and her familiy's reaction to it, but the show jumped the shark when they killed off the adopted brother. However, his spirit has been reincarnated in the form of a very similar character (adopted African-American brother in a family fresh from the Midwest) on the upcoming new 90210 show. see http://cwtv.com/shows/90210/about for more. Fans of The N will see some familiar faces in the cast.

Finally I can admit it - I'm 39 and I'm hooked on Degrassi. When I was a teen in the 1980's, the local PBS showed the original series. Oh, I so wanted my hair to look like Caitlin's! Anyway, I'm still a fan, although less so this past season with all the new faces and the ridiculous Manny & Jay engagement storyline. I've even seen the silly Lifetime movies that the girls who play Paige and Emma have been in (see IMDB.com). One question for Degrassi-philes: what ever happened to Terri after she hit her head on a rock? I know she was in a coma, but did she die? Was there a funeral? Her friends Asley and Paige never talked about her after that, the way Liberty and Toby still talk about poor dead JT. Did I miss something?

Sara Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

The N is a "must check" channel for me when surfing the dvr guide. I HAVE loved Degrassi...now I'm just a little more "in like" with it. And I'm very anxiously awaiting the next and, sadly, final season of South of Nowhere. Hey, N (or noggin or Nickelodeon. Whatever "N" is in charge over there) why'd ya push the start date of the season from the spring to the fall? I need me some SoN!

brandi Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

I love me some Degrassi!! I was a big fan of South of Nowhere in the beginning, but it got too ridiculous so I stopped watching. Then I caught an episode a while back and saw that the black adopted brother was dead and the girl was pregnant with his baby?!?! I was (and still am) confused.

PS Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

I'm actually a straight married male and some of the shows are good. We've been watching Degrassi since the first season, and then occasionally we'll watch whatever comes after. Beyond the Break was a good follower, and the Best Years was decent, too. Not too fond of Queen Bee though.

Sabrina Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

I was furious when they cancelled The Best Years.

Pam Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

hooray for a Syracuse native!

Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

Beyond the Break is rather addictive.

Jackie Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the-n! I fall asleep to That 70's Show now, but it used to be to Daria (once it was off MTV) and Radio Free Roscoe (which I looooove). I used to love Degrassi, but lately it's been lacking most of the characters I used to love, and from the teaser from next season, it looks like we're being introduced to fresh blood. Fresh freshmen blood. (Noooo BRING BACK CRAIG AND SEAN).

Also, is Best Years coming back? It was totallllllly my guilty pleasure.

NineDaves.com Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

um... the N all the way! they had me at degrassi, and kept me with queen bees and the n's student body. i'm sorry - losing weight and trying to be nice have never been so entertaining. way better than any vampire book. lisa, tell me, did you cry a little bit during the degrassi finale? be honest now...

Jennifer Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

I have loved the N for several years now, it's my guilty pleasure, and a way to unwind from a very stressful job that keeps me hopping in the summer.

Jordan <3's Edward Cullen Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

I love Twilight. I think you're really missing our if you don't read the series. I'm absolutely in love with Edward. I know he's a fictional character but he exsists in my imagination. He truly is the most perfect thing out there in my eyes. I still can watch the N though. I like That's 70's Show.

anne Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

somehow i manage both The N and Twilight.

Raven_Moon Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I think I'll stick with the "Twilight" books, thanks.
