Yelena Isinbayeva: Olympic Stud of the Day

Categories: Olympic Stud of the Day, Olympics, Sports

Yelenaisinbayeva_l One of the Studliest things I've ever read about is Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper falling asleep on the launch pad while awaiting liftoff. Therefore, it should be no surprise that my Stud of the Day is Russia's princess of the pole vault, two-time Olympic gold medalist Yelena Isinbayeva. She didn't even have to compete until the bar rose to 15' 5" — how common are those free passes in the Olympics? — so she just reclined right there in the infield. When she finally joined the competition, she not only clinched her second gold medal, she also set her 24th world record. And she did it all while wearing black nail polish, which I love. (Special shout-out to American beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh, whose black nail polish I've admired many times during close-ups of her blocking. Look for Walsh and partner Misty May-Treanor to be Studded when they win their second gold.)

Now, of course, Isinbayeva would like to make the jump to Hollywood, with a "small but important role." We think she'll need more than three attempts at that. But then again, she would look great next to Jean-Claude Van Damme...

Nominate your own Olympic Stud of the Day* — or second ours — below. (Then click here to check out our winning Studs from the previous days in Beijing.)

* Not just a man or woman who turns us on. (Necessarily.)

I second the Bela offer!

I think Bela Karolyi deserves a stud award for calling it like it is with his gymnastics commentary. Gotta love a guy who will, without reservation, insist that the judges are incompetent (repeatedly) and fight for what's right. Also second the nomination for Debbie Phelps... I don't think any other family member is as big a stud as her!!

jeany Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

Is Kerri's black nail polish this stuff? http://www.manglaze.com It's hard to tell on tv but it doesn't look shiny at all. Anyone know for sure?

Liu Xiang! Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

I nominate Liu Xiang for his courage in standing up to everyone that was supporting him, everyone that was sick of him, an entire country of 1.3 billion people as well as people like me, watching in the US. I'm so proud of him, if he had raced his Achilles tendon would've snapped off his bone. Standing at 6'2, he's very cute but he's given up his entire life to the hurdling cause. This is a good guy: donates money for his teammates at all the track events to pay for their insurance, donated even more money than Yao Ming to the Sichuan earthquake fund, paid for the surgeries of blind old people.

His heart is broken and he feels like he's let everyone down. Let's all rally and let him know that he has never let us down, ever. I know he'll have a long career in hurdling.

Some other choices:

I second, or rather third, Trafton. I would also nominate Jenn Stuczynski, for winning silver in pole vault, and dealing with that tool of a coach she has!

MsDaisy Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

My nominees for NBC broadcast studs...Mary Carillo & Chris Collingsworth. Their segments have been pretty entertaining and at least they aren't blabbing incessantly during the sporting events (maybe because they don't commentate the events, but hey, credit where credit is due).

MsDaisy Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Ditto discus champ Stephanie Trafton. Shawn Johnson should get the nod for tomorrow for finally getting the gold she deserved.

Crystal Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

"she should be a naughty Bond lady in the next movie"

Agreed. She is a bit cocky, but I like her style. Viva Yelena!

seattle_girl Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Nahh, she's a little too smug for me. My choice is Stephanie Brown Trafton, gold medalist in discus. Now she may not be the 'studly' female equivalent of say...Troy Dumais, but this lady is definitely an Olympic hero. First US gold medal in track, and first US gold in women's discus SINCE 1932! Yikes, that makes her stud of the century not just the day.

liz Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

I would like to nominate all the athletess who will go compete and not win any medals. It's not only about winning but just loving your sport and loving your country and going out there to show your all. We should appreciate all the athletes, not just the record breakers. They all train 365 days a year for this opportunity and they deserve our gratitude for getting as far as they did.

anne Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

How about that discus or shot put throwing chick from the USA. First American woman to win that since 1932!

mark Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

alexandre despatie has to be on this list. if you don't know what he looks like, you owe it to yourself to google him lol. soooo fine.

Nat X Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

What about hurdler Angelo Taylor? He looked like such a bad-a$$ running in his sunglasses.

KG Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

keeping composure during unfair moments is one of the qualities of a great champ. my favorite part was when nastia looked at the board and accepted her #2 ranking, then looked at the board again and noticed that she has the same score w/ He, then wondered why she's ranked 2nd. i would laugh if i didn't keep saying "what the frak?" myself... and i still want to nominate debbie phelps as OSD. or principal stud of the day.

BenG Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

Alexandre Despatie of Canada who rallied back from 21st position to win silver in the 3m Springboard diving and Simon Whitfield of Canada who won Gold in Sydney, faltered in Athens and then won silver in Beijing, even though no one thought he was a contender. GO CANADA!

emily Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

she should be a naughty Bond lady in the next movie.

Stanley Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Maybe she will get her own movie also?

mehere Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

Yes, she rocks. Loved the somersault of glee she did afterwards too. Don't hate her cuz she's beautiful ;)

Andie Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

I'm going to throw Nastia Liukin's name out there for keeping her composure after finding out she got screwed out of a gold medal in the uneven bars.

AA Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

Hey v, I second your nomination of Jenkins as OSOTD along with Simon. Although I did read in the Globe & Mail that Simon is going to split his $20K bonus for winning a medal with Jenkins.

v Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

After reading this article on Whitfield, maybe Colin Jenkins should get an OSotD nod.

Gretchen Weiners Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Oh ick no. This woman was sort of hateful in her story piece last night. All she talked about was how beautiful she is and how she only wears designer clothes. No thanks - be humble!

heather Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Simon Whitfield for sure. He was counted out of that triathalon at least three times and made it back into the lead pack.

Marianne Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Chris Hoy, GB cyclist and Scotland's Michael Phelps with 3 Golds from his 3 events. And his thighs have a circumference of 66cms at the widest point...

AA Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

Simon Whitfield!!!! He missed the Triathalon gold medal by 5 seconds (after competing for 55 kms--1 hours, 45ish minutes), but one of the best finishes in the last 200 metres I have seen! Check it out if you can find it!
