Catching up with Whit Stillman

Metropolitan_l Hard to believe 10 years have passed since the release of The Last Days of Disco, the most recent film by Whit Stillman, one of his witty dramedies about young bluebloods swimming upstream against history and navigating the rocky shoals of class, money, and sex. (This one starred a couple of rising starlets named Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale.) Since 1998, we've waited in vain for the next Stillman movie. Last week, he emerged in this IFC interview to explain what he's been up to for the last decade (mostly, living in Europe and seeing various projects stall over lack of financing). Here's hoping that his most promising back-burnered movie, a musical drama set in 1960s Jamaica called Dancing Mood, finds a backer, as I'll be fascinated to see what Stillman can do outside his usual milieu. Meanwhile, he notes, his first film, 1990's thoroughly delightful Jane Austen-esque Metropolitan (pictured), is now streaming for free at Hulu. You can watch the entire movie below, after the jump.

The movie world needs more Will Stillman (amd more Chris Eigeman too, actually). The LDOD and Metropolitan are two of my favorites.

When I saw this post, I was going to not-so-flippantly suggest that each and everyone of us Stillman fans could donate to the cause to get him that much need financing. Sad to see that I am only the fifth one to add comments..and at $1 donation a go, $5 wont even by two double mochas for the director's makeup crew.

I love Chris Eigeman!!!

I agree that Kicking and Screaming is a great movie to watch, especially if you like Chris Eigeman. He gets my favorite spiel in that entire movie, where he talk about being nostalgic for moments that are happening right now.

We need more Whit Stillman. Metropolitan was great, followed by Barcelona, and then Last Days of Disco. I mean, this is clever and witty dialogue. Chris Eigeman rocks the house and Chloe Sevigny fit right into Stillman's world.

If you like his movies, check out Kicking and Screaming by Noah Baumbach. Good stuff.

"Metropolitan" is one of my favorite movies ever! I really want them to turn it into a stage play just to hear that script in person. And although other people didn't, I love "LDoD" too. Any newness from Stillman is good news!

OMG! This is the first time that I've ever been on the exact same wavelength with EW because I just watched "Metropolitan" for the first time ever last night! Freaky!
