The Jonas Brothers shut down NYC's Apple Store! (Squeeeeee!)

Aug 14, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Tanner Stransky

Categories: Music, On the Scene, Those Crazy Kids!

Jonas_l How does one go about shutting down an Apple Store in Manhattan without a computer virus? Duh: Just import the Jonas Brothers.

Tuesday night—the day the band’s third album, A Little Bit Longer, went on sale—the trio drew the masses to NYC's SoHo Apple Store for a "secret" performance. And as EW's go-to reporter for all things Jonas, I was sent downtown to take a listen. Okay, not to listen to the Jonas Brothers, per se, but rather, to listen to hundreds of girls screaming at the top of their lungs (while listening to the siblings Jonas).

Interestingly enough, the hour-long set wasn’t announced publicly until Tuesday morning, yet insatiable fans had been lined up since Monday night. The gals put their dedication on display: While the Brothers sang "When You Look Me in the Eyes," one group of rabid fans held a sign that proudly screamed, "Here since 4 a.m.!" The crazy thing about all this, too, is that most of the attending fans had already seen the JoBros somewhere else during the week: The Apple Store show merely topped off a week of Jonasmania in NYC, highlighted by the band's guest-hosting stint on TRL, a Good Morning America concert that drew 15,000 eardrum-busting fans into the city's Bryant Park, and three sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden.

The Apple Store event, however, was intimate—and a fitting celebration at the end of a day that saw the new Jonas album strike No. 1 on both Amazon and iTunes by early morning. (Their first, out-of-print album, meanwhile, now fetches up to $350 on sites like eBay. We’re guessing that’s approximately three months’ worth of the average tween’s allowance.) Just 450 fans—including a Croc-wearing Harry Connick Jr. and his smitten daughter—were allowed inside (free of charge) for the 12-song Apple Store set, set-off by "That's Just the Way We Roll." Hands down, though, the screaming throngs—most of them wearing puff-paint covered t-shirts, while nearby adults inserted ear plugs—most enjoyed "A Little Bit Longer," the ballad Nick wrote about his battle with diabetes. Several diabetic girls were in the crowd, as evidenced by shirts that proclaimed things like, "I'm Not Diabetic! I'm Sugar Challenged!"

The night’s final tune couldn’t have been more fitting: Summer anthem “Burnin’ Up” (yup, Big Rob was there and got his rap on, wearing a "Big Rob's For Real" t-shirt) brought up the rear as two ambulances outside treated a slew of fainting gals, who had, predictably, overheated. Perhaps the Brothers need to remind their fans they’re just lyrics—not words to live by.

But PopWatchers, weigh in: Have you ever seen the Jonas Brothers live? What'd you think? Are the Jonas Brothers are ambulance-worthy? I mean, I'm talking about actual humans in need of medical attention here.

Me Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I dont think they are ambulance worthy. I mean they are three normaorl kids, well except the millions they have. They are a fad, they well pass. Such a fad in fact that I am not bothering to buy a tee shirt, and i buy every band tee there is. I 20 years teen well ask who they are. I am not saying they are not talented, cause they are, specialy Nick, but they are a Disney group, get picked up by someone else, they my have a chance.

Jomeo Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

Just an observation...
When we saw them 6 months ago, the fans were teen girls & younger. When we saw them a few weeks ago, the fans were older and there were a lot more guys there. When we saw them this week, there were a LOT of older fans and a LOT of guys there having a great time jumping and singing every song! Looks like the JB audience is broadening pretty quickly. Good for them! Maybe soon people will stop calling them a tween group! My friend (a guy) was blown away by what an amazing & energetic show they put on. And this is from a guy who used to tease me about JB love! Now he has their CDs and wants to go to another concert! Seeing/listening is believing!!

Jolishus Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Our family drove 8 hours to see them in March. Our family saw them again & MET them 2 weeks ago. Then my mom and her bff went to a concert the other day without us kids!! They're 42 and sang & jumped the entire time! My mom was so tired the next day that we thought she would need an ambulance!! lol

lisa Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 02:50 AM EST

Christina Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

Lindsay Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

I have seen them live and they are totally ambulance worthy!!!! I was sitting close enough to touch the ceiling at the Hannah Montana concert, and I thought I was gonna faint. I can't imagine how the people in the front feel. I don't know what I'm gonna do with myself Friday when I go see them in Cuyohoga Falls!!

Kimberly Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

They are so definitely ambulance worthy.
I saw them last night at Bethel and they were amazing.
It was ridiculous, they did amazing flips & Nick did back flips/round off things ALL THE WAY DOWN THE CATWALK!
And Kevin can spin like, thirty times in a row while playing guitar and then stop and keep playing like he hadn't just done something that would make any other person pass out.
And Joe let this little girl who got lifted onto the catwalk (LUCKY!) sing with him & she was hysterical & then my friends and I were all hysterical at how cute we were & how jealous we were.
Overall, I'm so depressed the concert's over & I would pass out thirty times & get arrested to meet them :]

Emi Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

LOVE the Jonas Brothers! I saw them back in March with my friend and we were jumping up and down and singing along the WHOLE time! And, to top it off, I won a contest so before the show I got to meet them! I think I fainted when Nick wrapped his arm around my waist for a picture.

joes_lovebug Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

my mom & dad approve of them, cause they are not rap gangsters, they dress like humans, and speak English not slang. They are great role models wearing their rings, and decent lyrics. I can not wait to see them live or the new tv show.

Tate Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

Funny Chris Hansen post. But, in reality, they would never bust an older woman with an underaged guy. That, somehow, is viewed as cool in our society. When is the last time you saw a female perp on "To Catch a Predator"?

Taylor Hanson Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Sorry the irony in my comment was lost on you, harika. Obviously you are pretty young. Do me a favor, go look up Taylor Hanson on wikipedia. Hopefully, you will understand my joke...

ha Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

um. well its just that

THE JONAS BROTHERS ARE AMAZING, AND YEAH, THEY ARE AMBULANCE WORTHY. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SUPER TALENTED, AND THEY ARE SO AMAZING AT WHAT THEY DO!

Kelly Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

The Jonas Brothers are well worth the wait, even if you have to be taken out in an ambulance. They're performances are beyond amazing because of everything they do. I'm 17 and I love the Jonas Brothers. I'd do anything to see them.

Emma Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I have been to 4 concerts, and each time, at least one girl has passed out. Obviously, at the TX State Fair, there were over 20 girls who had to be taken away for medical help.

IT IS SO WORTH IT! they do so well each show, and they are so unique from other bands.

Devan Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

THAT WAS SO WORTH THE WAIT! they were amazing on tuesday night and im so gald i waited 10 hours for them!

Chris Hansen Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

I hope all those of you gushing about the youngest Jonas are all underage.

Otherwise I might have to ask you to take a seat over there.

Linda Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

hell yess!
it was deff. worth the wait.. i was one of the girls holding the "4am. sign" too,
i love the Jonas Brothers<3

joejonasrocksmyworld Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

the Jonas Brothers are ABSOLUTELY 100% AMBULANCE WORTHY!!! I've been to seven shows this year! and I'm going to one on August 24th!!!!

harika Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Taylor Hanson Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Jonas Brothers suck. I mean, three young, cute siblings playing music? What's so great about THAT?

NAYLYNN Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

i have seen them 5 times, and everytime i have waited more than 8 hours in the florida heat! they are ABSOLUTELY AMBULANCE WORTHY! they are great performers and just have so much fun, we have fun too! i (along with other fans) have waited ten hours just for 2 songs....thats dedication. lol

Erika Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

Hello? Of course these guys are ambulance-worthy! They're AMAZING! and gorgeous and totally talented :] I'm a 16 year old girl who's been a huge fan since 2005. and every year I just start to love them even more! These boys are beyond amazing. They're amazing entertainers. I just went to the August 7th concert and it was BEYOND amazing. Safe to say, I lost my voice due to all the excessive screaming that was done. but hey, sooo totally worth it! They did great, and heck, they looked mega HOT! I was burnin' up for those three :]

jonas brothers equals NO Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

G Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

I took my daughter to see them for her birthday in July, and we sat in the seventh row. Gotta admit, we had a blast. They were great live, and she was mezmerized by Nick. I, however, woke up with a migraine-worthy headache the next morning, thanks to the throngs of screaming girls.....

Skip Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I am a 55 year old father of a 13 year old. We took her to a JB concert in Dallas and before long I was screaming like the rest of them. They are great entertainers!

Abbey Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Those boys are amazing...they are so great and so talented! My opinion--they definitely ARE ambulence worthy! I went to both of their concerts in Anaheim on July 13-14 and they blew me away both times! But the 2nd time, I was part of the casted audience so I was right by the catwalk. Not just standing around the catwalk, but I was actually right by the stage and not behind anybody...so I got to touch all of them and watch the show up close! It was amazing....they really are the best...they are worth a trip to the E.R. :) i wouldnt mind! I love them and they are such a great influence to me and to others. They're different from the rest of hollywood and thats what i love about them! God bless them and their family always! :)

zz44 Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

Are they ambulance worthy? Ummm, YEAH!! Have you SEEN these young men?! What's not to like? They're polite, they make their parents proud, love their friends and family, and each other, they write beautiful songs, and always make their fans feel appreciated. I can't see anything wrong with any of that. And did I mention they are VERY, VERY easy on the eyes? My teenage daughters are obsessed with them and if I was a lot younger, they would be fair game ;-) We've been to 2 of their concerts - Atlantic City and Hershey Pennsylvania, and we waited more than 8 hours in line to see them in Bryant Park in New York. It was worth it - they did not disappoint. They are a talented group of guys and they are living the dream. Good for them!!

Tarra Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Yeah, they rewally are ambulance worthy to some girls. I've been to a couple of there free concerts at the one in Universal Orlando of 15 girls were pulled out of the crowd that day. Then the next one for The Disney Channel Games they stopped counting when they hit 50 pulled out of the floor. And at both concerts they had to give water due to de-hyrdration. But they have always been amazing preformers...... so yeah.

clarus Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Girls fainting at concerts is hardly new. My parents' generation reacted that way to Elvis.
I don't think I'm completely out of touch: I have little kids, I watch several popular prime time TV shows and still listen to music on the radio in addition to my iPod, but today was the first time I ever heard of the Jonas Brothers. I expect my daughter will be introducing me to their music some day soon.

Ricky Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

no not ambulance death worthy ...they are not god .... i like the jonas brothers alot but girls fainting for them that is just stupid i mean i knwo some jb fan wil ltry and get my message removed but serisouly a girl going to a hopstial because she "over heated"

oh boy the people in the e.r. room will have a good laugh that night !!

Lmao .....

Liz Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Adult perspective: Completely ambulance-worthy.

I think they sound great live (NO ONE sounds just like a record, peeps - in their case, that can even be a plus!! Even so, they often sound remarkably close...)

The energy at their shows is transcendent...I've seen them do a free mall in-stores acoustic set, a short set on radio tour, and on their last 2 solo tours. I am always blown away by their showmanship and fan-love. (The closer to the stage, the better, of course...)

Bottom line: Adorable, studied but not contrived stage manner, fine musicianship and an easy, fun vibe all around.

JB FanOld Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

Hey older girls down here, 28 year old superfan here - it's all good!! They are simply amazing.

K Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

yeah. they are ambulance-worthy. jonas brothers are the best!

Naomi Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

I love the Jonas Brothers so much!! They are such awesome guys. I think I would have fainted to just to see them play live would be amazing! I LOVE their new CD. Yeah sure I get made fun of by people in my class for liking the Jonas Brothers, and I am only 13, but I know good music when I hear it!! Nick Jonas rocks my socks I love him!! <3<3<3<3

Lizzy Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

I saw them in Anahiem, CA. I was at the show that they filmed for the 3D movie....It was great. I am 19.

Sophia Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

They really don't sound that good live though most of their songs are quite good - but then again, a lot of pop sensations don't have the best voices but their music is still great isn't it?
They give new meaning to the meaning of POP(ULAR) music :D
Though nobody should be faint-worthy... that's just worrying.

Lisa Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

They have such high energy, and they put on a wonderful show. You will definitely have a great time.

Darby Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

Never seen JB but they are everywhere & it took my 5 & 7 year old daughters all of 30 seconds to learn the whole song Burnin' Up...guess I'll be heading to the store to buy that CD...

April Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

Ahhhhhhhhhh! i can't believe i got to see them live! if only i could of met the band hottie Nick

Lauren Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

Winona Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Wait... Harry Connick Jr. was there?!?! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah... sorry. Jonas Brothers. I've only seen one live television appearance (Idol finale, I think) and I wasn't really impressed vocally. Probably because I couldn't hear much, but they did put on an entertaining show. Their new album is getting very positive reviews, though, so I should check it out.

Jackie Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

My friend and I saw them at MSG on Monday night (I'm 20, she's 18), we even though we were totally embarrassed at first, we felt better when we saw a bunch of other girls our age. And once they started playing, we couldn't care less. The Jonas Brothers were AWESOME. They are SO high-energy, so terrific, they play AND write their own music? Can we even call them a boy band? They are in their own category because they are SO much better than anyone else.
And ambulance worthy? If I had been 14 and that close to them? I may have fainted too. I'm not ashamed to say that I now LOVE the Jonas Brothers. (And it's totally fine - Kevin is 20 too, so I don't feel like a creep for liking them).

tricia Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

We have seen the JB's twice in the last year - once in October opening for Hannah/Miley and recently last month. They rocked - and this from a Bon Jovi and Def Leppard devotee! Have already swiped their latest CD to load on my IPod!

Of course, let's see if in 20 years they still rock like Bon Jovi does now - Also took my daughter to see Bon Jovi this last year - and they solidly remain her number 2 band behind Joe, Nick and Kevin.

And I thought I was Joe's future MIL!

Joe's Future MIL Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

Moms love the JoBros. Cute, respectable and they sing "our" eighty's syle music!

nicky Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

I took my 12 year old cousin to see them in April, we sat in the boonies, and it was still a good show. After that, I was hooked!! We saw them in July in the 6th row and it was an amazing concert!! I'm 23, so it goes to show these guys can appeal to all ages!
