Shelly-Ann Fraser: Olympic Stud of the Day

Shellyannfraser_l I remember hearing once that some Olympians will go into a depression after the Games. Why? After finally achieving their goals, they can't escape the overwhelming sense of what now? I wonder if viewers can experience that, too... I've spent so many hours watching swimming in the last week that when I go to turn off the air conditioner in the wall just above my bed in the morning, my right arm actually swings around to tap the off button as if I were finishing the 100M free. Though NBC did its best to keep the feel-good Phelps-story alive on Sunday (I'm convinced the network will now track down the kids who bullied him when he was younger), I was definitely feeling a bit of a letdown.

The equestrian team jumping event, aired in the afternoon, provided a few awe-inspiring moments — how high are those jumps and how awesome is it that Brazil's Rodrigo Pessoa rides a horse named Rufus? But it was as though the evening broadcast wanted to break my spirit. Two of the favorites on the men's floor, Romania's hunky Marian Dragulescu and Brazil's inconsolable Diego Hypolito, sat down. Alicia Sacramone finished fourth on the vault (cue uncomfortable scoring rant by Bela Karolyi). Alexander Artemev fell off the pommel horse and ended his fairytale. Shawn Johnson took silver on floor (okay, that's not so bad), and China's Cheng Fei left the mat in tears. Over at the Bird's Nest, native Kenyan Bernard Lagat, now competing for the U.S., didn't even make into the 1500M final, and China's 110M hurdler/hero Liu Xiang had to withdrawal with an injury.

Luckily, I got a morale-boost from 21-year-old sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser (pictured), who led a Jamaican sweep in the 100M and celebrated accordingly. It looked like she passed out, but no, she just collapsed with her back on the track, put the flag over her face, and kicked her feet in the air. After so much  heartbreak, it was nice to see pure joy. (See also: China's men's badminton champ, Lin Dan, a.k.a. "Super Dan" to Bob Costas, who threw his racket and sneakers into the stands when he took gold.)

Now it's your turn: Nominate your own Olympic Stud of the Day* — or second ours — below. (Then click here to check out our winning Studs from the previous days in Beijing.)

* Not just a man or woman who turns us on. (Necessarily.)

definately Usain Bolt he has proven beyond any doubt that he is the best ever. I like his vibe, he is surely a good dancer doing the gully creeper and the nuh linger two popular jamaican dance.

Usain Bolt ****number one*** and stud of the day.

Daniel Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

If we're determining studs based on attractiveness, I'll nominate Marian Dragulescu, Aaron Piersol, and (my favorite) Ous Mellouli.

Alex Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

I have to second AC and say that Oksana Chusovitina should be the Olympic Stud of the day. 33 years old and with a son and she won a silver against 16-year-olds. You rule Oksana!

Jennie O Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed that NBC is using the "Adventures of Briscoe County Jr." theme song as background music for the Olympics. I realized it one day as I found myself humming along.

Fan Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

Shelly Ann Fraser -- what a joy to watch her fly across the finish line -- almost like she was aided by angels. She is the stud-ess of the day. She's awsome -- and her impoverished roots gives other poor people hope.

AA Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

What happened to the Usain Bolt OSOTD thread?

Alison Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

I vote for a different stud of the day...or should I say studs. The mixed doubles badmitton (sp?) team from Korea won the gold in 2 sets. They weren't even ranked, and went on to defeat 2 top-ranked teams before upsetting Indonesia in the finals. They were amazing! It was a pure display of teamwork paired with the type of joy that can only come by hearing the announcers trying to tiptoe around the word "shuttlecock."

alicia sacramone was robbed. i feel sorry for her, she just couldn't catch a break. what's up w/ the weird judging for gymnastics? i feel nastia liukin was robbed too, she should've won gold. in other news, shawn johnson is an adorable bubble of joy haha...

seattle_girl Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I think you called this one right. She exuded so much joy after the race - what a sweetie. Another adorable candidate was the short American sprinter (from the same race I think) who was asked what she missed most during her Olympic experience. Her answer, without hesitation...BACON. With the biggest grin, she said she could eat a whole package herself. Ha!! Haven't been able to find an actual badminton game, drats. Saw the shots of Super Dan's reaction though, that was pretty hilarious.

I third the Ian Millar nod...he truly is an amazing horseman, I couldn't think of another team I would've liked to get silver to than the Canadian one. But, my second nomiation for Stud of the Day is truly the whole US show jumping team, who simply got the job done and got the gold in amazing fashion! It kills me that the equestrian events don't get more coverage; they are easily as exciting as most of the "big" sports and more exciting than a lot of other sports that get more coverage.

Lauren Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Bela's judging rant wasn't uncomfortable, it was justified. Alicia Sacramone earned the bronze. Alicia had two little jumps at the end of her vaults, Cheung Fei LANDED ON HER KNEES. I was disgusted she got bronze. I can't believe coaches can contest races (especially when touch pads are involved) but not massive judging errors. After seeing that I turned off the television for the night. Completely killed my Olympic-watching buzz.

Christina Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I just read an article about tonight's Olympic coverage (stupid me but at the same time I am glad I read it - I needed a warning for this one); Gymnastics scoring is going to drive us all crazy again. Certainly, it's not going to bring much Olympic joy. And Alicia was robbed of the bronze medal; I totally agree no one who completely falls on their vault should receive a medal, no matter the start value, particularly if another competitor does not fall at all!

Jenn67 Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Shelly-Ann's joy was infectious. I found myself laughing right along with her. Her big metal mouth was ADORABLE and just everything about her was so wonderful. Congrats to her. I agree about a nod to Oksana, the 33 year old who competes for Germany in gymnastics. What an accomplishment for her and what a sweet story about how she left her home country to seek medical treatment for her son. I hope he stays healthy.

idigress Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Shelly-Ann was great! I was just talking about her with a friend of mine that missed the race!

Tipper Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

I loved watching Romania's Constantina Tomescu-Dita win the gold in the Marathon! I think they named her the oldest medalist and she has a teenage son! Add to that all the negative energy the announcers kept throwing at her ("she'll never keep it up." "She's really struggling." etc) and I just loved that she proved them all wrong and triumphed! Yay Romania!

Celimene Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

I'd like to co-nominate Fraser and Rafa Nadal. Unlike Roger "I don't want to take pictures with the other athletes" Federer, Rafa stayed in the Olympic Village and really seemed to relish the experience of representing his country and meeting athletes from around the world. He's a worthy world no.1. That said, I have to give some love to Shelly-Ann Fraser. She was adorable in interviews, and was clearly thrilled to have won the title. Her joy was palpable.

RMG Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Rafael Nadal or the Williams sisters.

AC Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

The German (formerly Russian) gymnast Oksana Chusovitina who at 33(!!!) got the silver medal on vault. An amazing feat for anyone, but especially at that age in gymnastics.

Christina Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

I second the Ian Millar nod. At 61 in his 9th Olympics he's finally got his first Olympic medal

Danica Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

How about Ian Miller (Canada) who, after 9 Olympics, finally has a medal.

x302 Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Loved her smile, she was so happy!!!! That's what the Olympics are all about-way to go.
I have to say, that is one of my favorite moments of the games. I also liked to see the joy and pride in Debbie's voice :)

donner Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

I loved seeing the BRACES shine bright on the big smile after Shelly-Ann won...and she was really fast! I think she coulda pulled away even further if she had farther to run...

Loved the Phelps interview with his mom...how cool is it that she's a principal? Can you imagine how neat it'd be if Michael attended an assembly at her school this year? Awesome!

Alicia was robbed of a medal - the Chinese gymnast landed on her KNEES...you shouldn't win a medal if you can't land a vault, no matter how high the start value is...

mehere Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Good choice of Shelly-Ann. Her joy was wonderful to see.
Canadian men's 8 - aye aye.
XD

KG Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

debbie phelps :D i loved the interview w/ michael phelps and his mom. especially the last part when she kissed him on the cheek. aww...

Gymbo Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Debbie Phelps

AA Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

My vote is for the Canadian Men's 8 Rowing.

jr Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

Stud of the Day should remain Michael Phelps. ew.com was a little premature in it's naming Phelps SOTD on the 16th. This shouldn't negate the above's accomplishment. Phelps is, however, @ this juncture, the greatest athlete.
