PopWatch Previewer: 'Role Models,' 'Rachel Getting Married,' 'The Informers,' and more!

Categories: PopWatch Previewer

Ruddhathaway_l It’s still mighty toasty outside, but the fall movie season is already revving up with trailers for Oscar bait (Rachel Getting Married, starring Anne Hathaway, pictured), prestige pics (The Informers), and box-office hopefuls (Quarantine and Role Models, starring Paul Rudd, pictured). Check out the clips and let us know if any of them will get you in the theaters.

THE INFORMERS (Warning: NSFW trailer)
November

Plot: You tell me. Judging by the loosely connected scenes of sex, drugs, and self-hatred, my guess is it’s a pitch-black ensemble drama.
Looks like: I Loathe the 80’s, Brett Easton Ellis-style.
Verdict: It might be set during the Reagan administration, but Informers’ cast is straight out of 1994, with Billy Bob Thornton, Winona Ryder, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke, and Brad Renfro all sharing the screen. (My colleague Sean Howe points out that even Chris “Wicked Game” Isaak has a part, so fingers crossed for an uncredited Heather Graham cameo). Even so, the promise of bad hair and great New Order tunes is almost enough to get me in the theater. Almost.

More previews after the jump...

QUARANTINE
October 10

Plot: Horror ensues after the police mysteriously barricade a news crew inside a house-cum-deathtrap.
Looks like: The Ruins set in a building, with some Blair Witch-style shaky-cam shots.
Verdict: Ah, the timeless appeal of watching no-name actors get picked off by freaky, bump-in-the-dark boogeymen. Quarantine has all the hallmarks of a modern horror movie: Cloverfield-esque POV footage, crazy monsterchildren (think the creepy girl in The Ring), the dragged-from-behind shot (One Missed Call), etc. And despite the clichés, it still looks pretty darn scary. Count me in — for a matinee.

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED
October

Plot: Angsty black sheep Kim (Anne Hathaway) raises hell on her sister’s Indian-themed big day.
Looks like: Margot at the East-Meets-West Wedding
Verdict: Everyone loves a good family drama in the fall, and it’ll be fun to see Hathaway finally tackle a meaty leading role — even if her character did somehow scalp Tilda Swinton in Constantine. Plus, Debra Winger! Long time no see! (If you’re about to mention Dawn Anna… don’t).

ROLE MODELS
November 14

Plot: A pair of man-child beer reps (Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott) grudgingly enter a court-ordered big brother program and (shocker!) end up learning some life lessons.
Looks like: Wedding Crashers meets Big Daddy.
Verdict: You may be surprised to learn that this is actually NOT a Judd Apatow movie. It certainly has the plot — schlubby guys coming of age — and the goofy, loose-lipped tone of one of the laughmeister’s creations. Even the cast is made up of Team Judd regulars: Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad’s McLovin), Jane Lynch (Andy’s randy boss in The 40 Year Old Virgin), and Elizabeth Banks (Virgin's kinky superfreak). But Role Models was actually helmed by Wet Hot American Summer vet David Wain, which might explain why — despite packing more clichés than a Mastercard commercial — the trailer actually got a few laughs out of me.

Your turn, PopWatchers: Should Quarantine (and/or The Informers) be declared off limits? Does Role Models set a good example for fall comedies? And are you in the mood to see Rachel Getting Married, or would you rather just hit up the open bar at the reception?

It will be a nice change to see Anne Hathaway break away from her girl-next-door image, so count me in for "Rachel Getting Married." And Paul Rudd has had my attention since "Clueless," so I might make a trip to see "Role Models."

Mel Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

The presence of Debra Winger and Bill Irwin will compel me to see Rachel Getting Married. Plus, I'm a sucker for those sorts of indie flicks.

Role Models just looks funny -- anything for Paul Rudd.

Catherine Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

I love Paul Rudd ever since he charmed us in Clueless and made the last Friends season watchable!!! So Role Models looks good to me!

Tim Duffy Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

bobby jay thompson sold me that role model movie.

Nee nee Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

None of them look especially good to me. Quarantine just makes me think of Cloverfield. I was sick for a week after watching that movie. Seriously bad motion sickness. Isn't there a way of making a movie look realistic without filming it that way?

Brucecampbellsrighthand Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 06:44 AM EST

Quarantine is a remake of a very good, scary Spanish film called [REC], which is coming ou tin a few weeks. Skip the bad (it's gotta be right?) American remake and check out the original when it comes out. It's worth seeing in theaters.

Rebel_Joo Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 12:36 AM EST

i'm interested in "Rachel Getting Married" because it seems like a hipster version of "Margot at the Wedding". Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio in a film is most intriguing.

informers looks pretty horrible. quarantine doesn't look good. you'd think they could get you to jump in the trailer at least for a movie like that.
rachel- not really for me. but looks interesting...maybe
role models- maybe. probably not. when it gets to cable...yes. i only laughed when the kid called paul rudd ben affleck.

Cristina Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

I could not get through the entire Rachel Getting Married trailer. Nope, not for me.

Nix Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 10:24 PM EST

You mean "Rachel Getting Married" isn't the Friends reunion movie? with nazi zeppelins? darn.

give them a chance Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I think Informers looks interesting. I think the trailer is trying too hard, though. But the cast looks cool, the vibe is dark, and yeah, it seems pretty "sexful."

I will wait to see all on ppv. thats television not a disease.

Well if my boyfriend tries to drag me to Role Models, I won't object too much. The Informers looks awful--and that is NOT a good look for Winona Ryder.

Leah Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

Midge from Mad Men is in Rachel Getting Married! I'm not sold on Anne Hathaway, but I'll check it out to see how she does. Unless, the reviews are awful.

Stevie, I'm pretty sure they were saying Hathaway stole Swinton's hairstyle.

Snarf Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

All look like great renters

stevie Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

um... Anne Hathaway wasn't in "Constantine." Rachel Weisz was though!

Raven_Moon Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

I might consider seeing "Role Models." I do love Paul Rudd, after all. "The Informers" looks kind of awful. I'm not sure about "Rachel Getting Married." Anne Hathaway looks like she'll be pretty good in it, but I'm not completely sold yet.

On the Dark Side Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

Informers reminds me of Eddie and the Cruisers, but way darker and more sexful. Yes, "sexful" is now a word.
