Olympic Stud of the Day: Matthew Mitcham

Aug 24, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Olympic Stud of the Day, Olympics, Sports

Olympics_mitcham Join me in a splashy round of Paula Abdul seal claps to congratulate OSOTD Matthew Mitcham, who single-handedly thwarted China's much-publicized chance at a diving sweep! Running on a precise power hybrid of solid, focused dives and OVERWHELMING ADORABLENESS, the 20-year-old Aussie struck gold in the men's 10-meter platform finals, tossing goofy "looks like I'm actually in the running, mate!" mugs to the camera all the way. Mitcham, a former world double mini trampoline champion at 15, is the first Australian to declare his homosexuality before going to the Olympics. Cheers queers!

Other studly beasts from Saturday's telecast: Sanya Richards made up for a disappointing solo race to anchor the U.S. women's gold-medal 4x400 relay -- and the U.S. men won, too, setting a new Olympic record. U.S. Women's Basketball trounced Australia in a gold-medal game made most memorable by the Australians' unforgiveable spandex uniforms. Canadian rower and extremely hot man Adam van Koeverden won silver in the K-1 500, after a crushing eighth-place finish in Friday's 1000 that had him profusely apologizing to viewers ("I was a spectator," he said). Oh, and speaking of sitting on your ass in total disbelief, I watched synchronized swimmers and rhythmic gymnasts for hours -- a fun quatra-annual Saturday tradition involving my utter shock that a select group of physiologically advanced humans actually can and do...do that. You know? Why? How? Wow.

I now feel compelled to create an evidential collage of Matthew Mitcham's cuteness -- not our standard operating procedure, but what the hell, it's the weekend and here I am.
Matthew_mitcham_collage

Well, that was fun and time-consuming. Co-endorse Mitcham, or nominate your own Olympic Stud of the Day, below!

Totally agree with you! Matthew is just too cute/hot/adorable to put it into words. He totally deserved the gold after his awesome performance, especially that superb last dive.
Kudos to him for coming out before the Olympics, that's enough proof that he's happy with himself and strong enough to handle any kind of pressure. His win surely will help to bring down those stupid prejudices and stereotypes against gay people.
I <33333 Matty!

For me he deserves the title of Olympic Stud of the Year!

Chanelle Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

I was all "awwww" when he waved to the camera and started to blow kisses. He just made my day with his adorableness!

This guy is beyond perfect: lovely, funny, humble, perseverant, courageous, genuine, smart, outgoing, articulate, charming, charismatic...Plus he's a terrific athlete who always performs breathtaking dives.
And of course he's bleeding hot/gorgeous like whoa.
I've got this major crush on him right now. His bf is srsly one freaking lucky guy!

rusty Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Glad you'all yanks loved our Aussie Matt's dive, but cut the comments about our women's basketball outfits. Those dreary baggy dags the rest of you wear, God knows what's lurking under them. At least our girls are proud of their bodies. It's typical that women swoon about a man's body, but make bitchy comments about the women showing off theirs.

Jen Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Heh. I googled Matt Mitcham just now simply because I felt the need for a dose of cuteness, and found this site--guess I'm not alone! I'm Canadian and a straight woman to boot (sigh...)but for me he beats Adam Van K any day. Kudos to the CBC for full coverage of his post-win adorableness.

chris Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 02:57 AM EST

That was definitely a happy moment for us Aussies.. Matt is really cute too and what a body! Anyway, a lot of Canucks keep mentioning Adam van Koeverden - who was the favourite for a gold but lost to an Aussie as well. I dont mean to be rude, i just thought that was funny to mention!

claudenorth Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

Such a cutie!

kevin Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Hey Janette, do you ever talk about your boyfriend? Well, so would I, if I had one. :| So there.

RJP3 Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Saying you are GAY is not talking about your SEX LIFE BTW.

It is talking about WHO YOU ARE, WHO YOU EMBRACE, WHO YOU LOVE ---

Janette's ignorance is shocking and beyond common.

RJP3 Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Hey Janetter you ignorant ....
Bet you did not squirm when we had to hear about the married lady who lost her wedding ring in the sand (that proclaims her SEXUALITY). I bet you did not squirm when stories about straight Olympic coverage was aired (that declares their SEXUALITY) ... but when ONE and ONLY ONE out of thousands of stories about the athletes mentions HIS sexuality - you are sick of it.

That makes you a Straight Supremist - or just common and base.

Janette Murphy Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Who cares whether he's gay or not? I couldn't care less what he does in the bedroom - I'm sick and tired of having to hear about absolutely everyone's sex life. What does it matter? He's a wonderful diver, which is all we really need to know. Many, many congratulations to MM for just that.

Clay Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:10 AM EST

It's mind-boggling to me that Matthew is the ONLY out gay man in this year's Olympics. Shameful of NBC to edit out his partner -- this is a positive example television viewers need to see.

Diego Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

I admire Matthew cause people like him bring down the sterotypes about gay people

Claire Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

I whole heartedly agree with your choice for Matthew. As a young gay women and an Australian myself Matt has done me and my 20 million countrymen incredibly proud. I had never heard of him until I was watching him dive and though I appreciate his openess about his sexuality as a wonderful thing (and deeply lacking in Australian sporting culture) I admired that in the end it was his ability that did all the talking for him.

An anonymous donation IN HONOR OF MATTHEW MITCHAM has been made to the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund at Fresno State. ~ Give today. For tomorrow and beyond. ~ www.bulldogpride.org

Anne Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

Matthew is definitely my pick too. So adorable and so cute. I didn't know he was gay but my gaydar was going off something fierce so I'm glad its still in working order. He did so amazing in those last dives. HOORAY!!

Fasty Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Mitcham was awesome. Shame on NBC and the mainstream sports press in the U.S. for largely ignoring his huge upset and fascinating backstory.

Bethann Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Annie--while I applaud the majority of your choices for SOTD over the duration of the Olympics, I have to say that I am acutely aware that there have been more male selections than female ones. What up with that?!?

Pablo Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

He was my pick for the day, too,at my blog: OlympicBoyfriendOfTheDay
http://olympicboyfriendoftheday.blogspot.com

Jelana Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I'd like to put in a bid for Sammy Wanjiru as an honorable mention OSD. He is the first Kenyan to win gold at the Olympic marathon, and he did so by taking 3 minutes off the best Olympic time in 87 degree heat. Ok, so he's not dishy, but still a remarkable accomplishment.

Huffybike Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

I put up MP3s from his interview: http://www.entertonement.com/collections/2431/Matthew-Mitcham

What a lovely story. Good for him.

Martha Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

MM was amazing - I was worried when he stood on the platform for so long before his last dive, but he nailed it. He didn't even realize he won the gold until someone told him. Very exciting, though like Carli I felt bad for the Chinese diver who screwed up his final dive.

carole Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

he is the epitomy of cuteness - a canadian cameraman when in for a close up on his gold medal and after two seconds, he dipped his head down into the shot and smiled and waved - soooo adorable.

Snarf Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Good for him. I agree, on a scale of 1 to 10 on the adorable meter, Matthew Mitcham is an 11.

Gymbo Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Yay for Matthew! Agree about Adam as well. Actually ALL the rowers were pretty studly!

Joey W. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

As a young gay guy growing up in Indiana, I can't tell you how overwhelmingly cool it is to see Matt tear it up on the 10M. I read his cover story in "The Advocate" and worried the pressure of being out might take its toll on him ... and now I couldn't be prouder for his achievements! Matt is an inspiration for all of us.

Dave Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

CONGRATS MATT! Awesome win!!

Mike Ryan Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

The old gaydar went into overdrive alright.....Thomas Finchum of the US seemed to stand out at the gayest diver of all...but hes young...give him time and he will come out of the closet too

Joey W. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

I second that nomination for Olympic Stud of the Games.

hanie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

Yes, Matthew was adorable beyond words! Poor Chinese dude who will forever be remember as the one who was not able to deliver the 8th gold. As for the uniforms of the Australians, I think they've always worn that. It wasn't the first time I saw it so it wasn't as funny. But I have to agree with you about Synchronized Swimming and Rhythmic Gymnastics. Those routines were just breathtaking.

CB Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

His story is wonderful. He fought his inner demons and goes on to win the Gold. The video's below are touching.

A retrospect of his dives in Beijing, including his Gold medal dive and the medal ceremony (15 min video) can be found @ http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6iyuo_matthew-mitcham-medaille-dor_sport

An brief interview after the ceremony, where he is seen with his mother and partner can be seen @http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tm33-KoxXA

Deb Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Thanks for these Olympic posts, EW! It was fun. Matthew Mitcham was tremendous. I, too, got sucked into rhythmic gymnastics yesterday and watched in awe. What they did with the ribbons - it didn't look real.

fred Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

You can see videos of matt at :
http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/video/-/sports/diving/

David Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

I nominate Matthew Mitcham as Olympic Stud of the Games -- Michael Phelps is so last week. But Matthew came from behind, thwarted China's sweep of the diving medals, and posted the highest score of any diver in Olympic history. Now that's an Olympic Stud for the Ages!

MJ Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

This guy is adorable but Reid Priddy from the Gold medal winning US men's indoor volleyball team has to be there also. Amazing verticals, crushing kills and super hot bald head!

Rebekah Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

That was the perfect choice. When he started crying last night, I teared up too. It is so exciting to see true emotion from the athletes. Many congratulations Matt!

LaT Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Completely agree with Mitchum as OSOTD. He was terrific and consistent and just plain fun to watch.

T-Dot Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

Adam van Koeverden is so worthy of OSOTD! He's a class act all the way....Canada is so proud of him! Yay for Annie to recognize other countries studs. Great job :)

James Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

Matthew is so cute, and one hell of a diver. I love the two-handed wave! So adorable!

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

Adorable yes, talented yes, with an awesome bod, YES.

My gaydar went off through the diving finals so much, I had to drink several glasses of ice-cold water. Thanks to him for representing.

Go Annie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

Annie, I love your posts so much, you always throw in a silly extra image but they are usually links so I'm glad this awesome montage is visible on the page...his OVERWHELMING CUTENESS must have insisted on it. Love you and GO MATT MITCHAM and all gay Olympians!!!

Maria Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

"Canadian rower and extremely hot man Adam van Koeverden won silver in the K-1 500,"

Oh Annie. As a Canuck, giddy that you mentioned Adam. But Matthew is beyond cute for words too.

Kel Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

I 100% endorse Matthew as Stud of the Day! I watched him dive last night...I love when an athlete is super excited to win and he was. so adorable and a fabulous diver!

Betsy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

I definitely second your Stud of the Day!! Matthew Mitcham is just the cutest thing ever. He just couldn't believe that he got gold. And many kudos to him for having the courage to be out. :D

jaime Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

I SAW IT LAST NITE. . .WOW WAS I JUMPING UP AND DOWN! HE NOT ONLY SINGLE HANDLY DERAIL THE CHINESE FROM SWEEPING THE DIVES BUT HE ALSO SCORED THE HIGHEST SCORE EVER FOR A DIVE IN OLYMPIC HISTORY! THE FACT THAT HE IS GAY AND IS OPEN ABOUT IT INSPIRES ME AND WILL INSPIRE ALL YOUNG GAY ATHLETES WHO FEEL THEY NEED TO STAY CLOSTED! ITS OKAY TO BE GAY. . .AWW THIS IS A MOMENT OF PRIDE FOR ALL AUSSIE's AND THE GAY COMMUINTY!

AA Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

I didn't catch much of his event (argh!), but I agree, I think his adorableness clinched it (at least from your gold-medal-worthy montage, Annie). And thanks for the AvK shout out--I know we Cdns have been nominating him since the beginning. And thanks also to EW for all your hard work spending so much time finding the OSOTDs for us! Enjoy the closing ceremony--I watched it on CBC this morning, and it was a great show.

Meredith44 Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

I ended up having to download a Firefox plug in and watch on the NBC website, as the Aussie one said I wasn't authorized, but it was worth it. He did some great dives (especially the last one), and he was so adorable! Also, the earlier poster was right and NBC did show him kiss a guy (his partner?) at the end of their medal ceremony coverage. Yay for him, and he definitely deserves Olympic stud honors.

Nessa Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Isn't he just GORGEOUS!!!! You can watch most of the coverage athttp://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/sports/diving
You may have to search the 'news' section of this site for the closing ceremony video.

I am from Sydney and also tried NBC by entering 90210 as "my" zip cod...haha...no luck!!
The Australian Ch. 7 website above should be accessible without an Aussie IP address xx

Matt is such a sweet, beautiful, humble, funny and charismatic boy....and very deserving of this article...Olympic Stud...that indeed HE IS!!!

BrandonK Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Mitcham is adorable and so good at diving! A lot of times he made no more splash than the smaller divers. I had no idea that diving was so popular with the gays, but it seemed like there were quite a few of our boys out there.

Steve Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Wow....I live in Hong Kong and the feed we saw here showed Matt after almost every dive...and AWESOME ADORABLENESS sums it up! Lovely spontaneous smiles. When he surfaced after his second dive he had SUCH a beautiful smile on his face, knowing he'd done it well. And in the medal ceremony, he hugged the two others on the podium (to the discomfort of the Chinese diver), but it was a great show of sportsmanship. He is the cutest athlete of the decade!

maria Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

good on you matthew for showing off you mum and partner who have been behind you at these olympics....

ben Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

waaahhh!! the one time i didn't watch the diving finals and someone scores an almost perfect score... and it's from matt!! does anyone know where i can watch his performance? i'm outside the USA so NBC's website is of no help to me...

JB Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

Right on! Good on you Matthew...and Annie!

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

Yay for Matt!!! he's gorgeous and that last dive was truly extraordinary.
and as for the hideous australian basketball uniforms, they've been around for a while, and all the players hate them. apparently they're getting new ones after the olympics but haven't yet so as to keep same as the uniform they wore to win the world champs hoping for luck and maybe to scare the other teams. didn't seem to work in the final though so hopefully they'll never be seen again!

TC Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Aww, that montage truly shows his "OVERWHELMING ADORABLENESS". Stupid NBC showed barely any of his reaction (they covered it with the final scores!) and didn't show his medal ceremony! They were also too busy hyping up the Chinese diver (who can blame them really...) to mention Matt except for a quick sentence about how he quit diving 2 years ago. GAH. Just because he doesn't want his sexuality to distract from his diving doesn't mean you can't MENTION it...
Still, his utter "AWWW"ness makes up for all the NBC boo boos.

Carli Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Mitcham is only 20?! I was definitely rooting for him. A Chinese sweep would've been awesome for them, but seriously ridiculous. I did feel bad for their swimmer that completely blew it.

I didn't have my contacts in this morning, so I didn't know if I was seeing things when looking at those unis the Australian basketball team was wearing. What the frak were those?!

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Watch's NBC.com's medal ceremony. He climb the rails to kiss his mom (I think), gave her his rose bouquet, and then sought out a guy (his partner, I think) and then gave him a very audible kiss!

Kai Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

Yay Matt! I was hoping that he would go running into the crowd and hug his partner Lachlan, but alas, American networks would never show that even if it did happen.

Crystal Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

You WIN for creating the adorableness montage! I was doing laundry while watching and everytime I would leave the room I made sure to pause the DVR on his mugging face!

Trixie Firecracker Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Mitcham is adorable. It's unfortunate that NBC edited out his boyfriend from the coverage: http://thinkprogress.org/2008/08/24/mitcham-olympics/ .
