'Nashville Star' recap: Melissa Lawson's first single doesn't suck!

Aug 5, 2008, 07:35 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'Nashville Star', Country Y'all!, Mini TV Watch, Music, Reality TV, Television

Melissalawson_l A surprise to, well, no one, Melissa Lawson is our new Nashville Star. (Click here to read Whitney Pastorek's no-holds-barred Q&A with the champ.) In the end, it came down to the mother of five vs. Gabe Garcia, the Hispanic-American former electrician who finally learned how to "turn his Texas on." The evening's high and low notes:

• Breakout performance: Cohost Katie Cook's breasts. They're the only thing that I'm 100 percent certain I'll remember a year from now.

• Performance we'd most like to forget: Tie between the awkward "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" duet Melissa and Gabe were forced to suffer through, and the finalists' group number with host Billy Ray Cyrus. Was the plan always to use the backup dancers (clones from Jessica Simpson's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" video) just for Gabe's portion of "Achy Breaky Heart," or did Melissa and third-place finisher Shawn Mayer kindly ask producers to get them the hell off the stage? I wonder...

• Reason Melissa deserved to win: Aside from her pitch-perfect performances of Rascal Flatts' "My Wish" and Sugarland's "Something More," the fact that she managed to belt what will be her first single, the inspirational but not-at-all-Idol-schlocky "What if It All Goes Right," while pulling confetti from her mouth and hugging her husband and five boys. That is a pro.

• Reason we'd have been okay if Gabe had won: He finally started showing some personality, singing Brad Paisley's "Celebrity" (about the inane perks that come with being a reality TV star). He also sounded great on Alan Jackson's "Gone Country."

• Reason we're okay that Shawn didn't win: We love her, but she didn't do to Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead" what she'd done to Gretchen Wilson's "Here for the Party." We want Shawn to write songs, hang out with George Jones some more, then give Music Row another go.

So, will you go see the final four (hey, Coffey!) on tour? And will you buy Melissa Lawson's album, which, like her single, will be produced by John Rich?

valinda Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

i voted for melissa from the beginning. what a performer and what a voice. the best was when she did martina's "this one's for the girls". she was so comfortable on stage, did it with attitude. i can't wait to get her CD.

Roger W Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

Yeah, it DOES suck. As usual, the wrong person won. Gabe Got SCREWED

We watched Melissa and wonder where she is now? We have been watching for news of her, what is she doing? Will she be on tour, maybe with George Strait? He always likes to take a new artist on his tours, I'd love to see her perform again and I hope she is doing well, somewhere!

Deb Perry from NH Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

Mellissa
I watch Nashville Star every year and this was one of the best yet. I really enjoyed the way you sang and loved your song What if it all goes right. Well it all went right and you definetly were the best contestant this whole season. I hoe to see your album out soon. I enjoy your music. You remind me of Bonnie Raitt, and Wynona combo. Both of whom I love immenselley. You sing your songs with your heart in it.. I could tell watching you this whole season. That is why every week I voted for you. Your the best. Your voice is great and I wish you all the luck in the future. Your a good Mom.

Ladyone Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

Good Luck Melissa, I do believe it's staged too. They cut record deals for who they want and not who is fan voted or is it fan voted. Poor Angela Hacker, where is she? Look who got the record deal out of that show!

Ruthie from Albuquerque Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Melissa,
You are the best I have seen in years! I knew you would win the first night I heard you sing. I voted more than 100 x each night and I never missed an episode. Keep doing what your doing girl. I hope you make it to Albuquerque some day soon!

Robin Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 03:25 AM EST

Hi Melissa
Just wanted to say Great Job! It just proves We mothers out there can do both raise or families and have a carrer. I love your Voice and I cant wait until you CD comes out. especially if it has the song "If all goes right on it".I loved that song. and as for Billy Ray Cyrus your still my hunk keep up the good work.

Janet Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Melissa I know that your a christian and sure hope you make a CD with your contract. If so, I will be the first one to buy it. Congratulations and Good Luck with your future.

Anna Moore Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 06:47 AM EST

When can we expect Melissa's first CD? Can't wait!

Pam Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I am so tickled that you won!
I was really hoping you would.
Good luck to you and your family.
You are really GREAT!

Mary Hewerdine Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

Melissa,

I blew up my phone voting for ya! You proved what your worth up there. #1 to your husband and children, and #1 to us who have no life and pushed people out of the way to watch you take it all. Awesome. Proud #1 fan!

Rhonda Kay Patton Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Melissa.......you ROCK!!!! From day one I could clearly see that you were, by far, the most talented contestant! You have great camera appeal, comfortable, yet commanding stage presence, pitch-perfect vocals, versatility (......you could sing the yellow pages and capture an audience!) and grace under pressure. Now, girlfriend, you have it all: A beautiful family, the chance to realize your dreams and live the life you deserve!!! I voted for you a kazillion times and apparantly the rest of America has spoken as well. Breath it all in.........You deserve it all!!! Rhonda

Judy Rugg Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I heard her record, What if Everything Goes Right" today on 99.5 the Wolf in Dallas, TX. I cried all the way home from work. I am SO HAPPY that she won. I voted for her about a million times during the contest. I love the song and hope to hear it more.
You GO GIRL! A loyal fan - Judy Rugg

Judi Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

I'm so thrilled Melissa won. Gabe is good, but so like many others. Coffey is lacking greatly in talent. Ashlee should have been touring with them for sure. And to those who are naysayers about Melissa, you should be so lucky to have a voice like hers. She's great, and good for her! Being a "larger" sized woman and STILL winning is a step forward for heavy women. They CAN be appreciated.

GO MELISSA!

Coog Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Melissa rocks! She has one of the best voices I've ever heard and as an added bonus she is very sexy as well.

Wendi Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

I say ya'll all need to get over it...Melissa has a voice and thats all there is to it..I dont see any of you up on the stage doing anything..She had a dream and she followed it. What a inspiration to us all...WTG Melissa and I will be buying your CD as soon as it is released...Also WTG for making it to #1 on ITunes!!!!

Leanne Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

We are so happy for you !!! I look forward to hearing your singles and buying cds ..Congratulations hun..you deserve this

linda Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

Congrats Melissa!
You have made the state of Alabama very proud. We will see you in Fla.

jeannine Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

sorry, but the show was awful, and I do mean awful. karoake has better singer then any of them. and why did the hostess. have to show the mostest ?? how degrading to all of us females. and billy rae. you need to take a bath and get out the sissors. you look like.*&*%^&(&(

Pam Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

A little tidbit about Nashville Star: The audience is staged. I was there. You have to be there 2-3 hours before they start seating because they want to put you where THEY want you. I was lucky to get in the camera range but I also see what they did. They put the best looking and best dressed people in camera range and everyone else was out of camera range. During commercials, they tell you when to shout and scream and when John Rich (or any pf them) say anything negative, we were to boo really loud and Billy Ray reading the prompter, well...that just speaks for itself. Nashville is all about image and that's pretty sad. Melissa was good, but the image isn't there which means she probably won't last long and the fact that she lied about her song writing will probably hurt her career and she will get dropped by her label within a year. Not a smart move Melissa!

Chloe Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

Melissa-good-but lied (not a good thing)
Billy Ray-HORRIBLE! PERIOD!
Jewel-can't sing herself and yet giving advice-JOKE!
Melissa, lying will always hurt your career, especially when you get caught! Shame on you!

Melinda Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

First of all, lying about not ever writing a song and thinking the public wouldn't capture that was a really stupid move on Melissa's part. Never a good idea to start assuming that the public is dumber than a post when trying to start out a career like this. She's good, nothing to look at and I know Country Music is MOSTLY about image and she doesn't have it. She's over 30, has 5 young kids under the age of 10 no less and she would probably be better off just doing this as a hobby. I have the feeling she will fade out within the next year and a half.

DAOregon Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:55 AM EST

I have seen better talent at my county fair with far superior musicality of any of this years contestents....NBC butchered a good show with there mainstream aproach...In my opinion this will be back on USA next year or not at all....Too bad for the real talent that is out there that could of used the break that have put in far more than any of these contestents.....Mellisa what a joke "OHH I never wrote anything before" then what the heck are you doing on a Country singing show...I can hear a thousand people at are local karokee bar that sounds better than mellisa nothing special about her

Boobah Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:52 AM EST

Faith...cowriting was always acceptable. Melissa credited her cowriter from day one..It was even listed on the website..Gabe's song also had cowriters...Melissa's attempt to answer was cut off by John Rich's comments (time constraints). Melissa wrote most of the song (ask Margi). Don't spout off when your facts are questionable...Gabe is ok, but nothing special. He didn't get robbed..America liked Melissa better. Get over it.

Dawn Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

Melissa looks just like my best friend, Julie. It's really uncanny.

mysticlair Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Take a bow Melissa! You truly are an inspiration. Don't pay attention to all the negative comments. They are just from people who wish they were in your shoes right now. Not many artists/singers can sing such a variety of music like you can. You did blow the doors off of this thing. Yes, Gabe has a nice voice but all of his songs sounded the same. (No power) Great for Karoke night though. With the right guidance he could actually find HIS voice and be awesome.
Everyone seems to have a comment about "Ready To Stand" But what about Gabe's song that sounded like he took the music from a Kenny Chesney song and changed the lyrics. Either way when asked about it on stage Melissa wasn't given much of a chance to talk due to the judges talking. Do your research people, NONE of the songs were 100% their own.
I would love to get to know Melissa. She is in a class of her own and the past 20 years of hard work has finally paid off.
Enjoy your new journey.......

Christina Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

BILLY RAY omg.. dude he was the worst host! My husband who I think has ZERO taste in music etc walked in and said.. "that guy is so boring it hurts me to watch this show".. got up and left the room. I loved Melissa ... but if they do this again they need a real host. REBA? I loved Billy's one hit wonder but a public speaker..he is not. He only got the job because of his daughter. Also..Jewel? huh? I am from Alaska where Jewel is from. Hello? When did she become a country artist? At least let her prove her country stuff before they let her be a judge. Next year.. please better host and more authentic judge! (Garth Brooks anyone?)

Carie Schueller Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 10:25 PM EST

I never watched american idol. I was surprised to watch Nashville Star. I am glad I did. I was flipping threw the tv one day and heard you sing and I was sold into watching it from there. I think you have a great voice and talent. I am also proud that you didn't let your weight bring you down, instead you made a turn around. Being yourself is what made you a sucess. Never forget who you are or where you came from. May god bless your future.

John Kreuzer Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

This year's show was great. I really thought that Gabe Garcia should have won though but we will hear from him again. Check out my post on the finale:

http://kreuzer33.wordpress.com/2008/08/05/nashville-star-crowns-its-champion/

Pat Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

PLeaSE do NOT bring back Billy as the host, I can do a better job of reading a cue card, it was SOOO obvious! Melissa will do well in Nashville, the girl can sing. I'm sure Gabe will also get a contract. I lived in SAN when Jewel got her start, she did NOT sing country, so I didn't understand why she was a judge. I wanted to see John Rich....sans hat, just once! It was an okay show, and if they change the "host" next year, I might watch again! It's tough when the network picks the finalists.

Alan Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 01:33 AM EST

Melissa is awesome!!! I have been listening to her sing for a long time now at Pantego Bible Church and i never doubted that she would win. The songs she sang on the show didn't always do her justice. Her voice is a gift from God and it touches my heart everytime i hear her sing.

Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Melissa Lawson was the correct choice. She is poised, polished and has a beautiful voice. I am so GLAD she won. She had my vote week after week...Way to go Melissa!!

Bill Berger Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Melissa- Congradulation's on your winning the Nashville Star Contest. I was rotting for you from the begining. I love your voice. I hope that you reach your goals. So best of luck in the future. Your fan Bill Berger

Shaunee Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I was so happy that Melissa won and yes I will buy her album when it comes out. I liked her from the first time I heard her sing on this show.. She deserved to win.

nannaoftwo Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

Hey, I think Melissa did a terriffic job. I say followyour dreams no matter who you are. Gabe was okay, but Melissa isa better singer. You rock girl

jason Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

i was pulling for melissa. she is awesome. some wonky notes earlier on, but she is so cool, and i love that she's a bigger gal, with 5 kids. she's a REAL person!! congrats melissa, i may just buy that album!!

Mitzi Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

Yes, I will buy both Melissa's and also Gabe's CD. I hope it does some good. I bought Angela Hacker's last year and it is absolutely AWESOME! I'm a fan of all genres, but if you are a die hard traditional country lover, you MUST get Angela's CD. Wonder if her brother ever made one...

Florence Dean Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Melissa, my daughters and I all voted for you. You remind me of Kate Smith and Winona Judd, both musical stars though of different eras and genres. Follow your star, we'll be watching for you!

Leah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

Hey, DanOregon (where I grew up, btw), are you teasing about having Melissa and Shawn sing the Time of my Life duet? That would be downright shocking to most people's sensibilities on a "family show"...like the new hit pop song with the lyrics "I kissed a girl and I liked it," which I heard over the speakers while shopping at the mall the other day! Best to have chosen another hit country song--maybe Alan Jackson's "Good Time." Faith Hill's "Mississippi Girl" woud be great AND co-written by John Rich.

Peggi Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

RE: negative comments about Melissa...
1. Faith-RE: Melissa "cheating" by not 100% writing her song, please go back (youtube)and watch Gabe on wk 7. Gabe SAID that he wrote his song "with a COUPLE of buddies"! Get over it! Jewel asked Melissa if she wrote it "100%" and ML shook her head "no". She gave credit to her friend Margi Howard all along.
2. RE: # of votes: NS should have had (3)lines per contestant. We only got through about 1/3 of the time; other 2/3 of the 2 hrs. were busy busy busy - even the last 5 minutes! I was angry that she surely had the MOST voters TRYING to get through - and might get beat unjustly!
3. Melissa sang quiet songs at her hometown concert - beautifully! She needed to play her strongest cards each week on NS. Gabe was the same ol'/same ol' every week. zzz
4. Rick L told me that NS picked 3 songs each week per star. They then chose 1 from the 3- don't blame the contestants for not singing country!
JS: "Just love hearing you sing-EVERY night! PS

gibberish Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

WOW THIS SHOW IS AWFUL. BUT I GUESS IT'S BETTER THAN THAT SLUT WHO KILLED HER KID AND SAYS SHE'S O.K. JUST CHARGE HER WITH MURDER ALREADY!

OH PLEASE Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

The right person one with the best voice. You all need to just get over yourselves and suck it up.

serioulsyspeaking Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

What was with all the Tata's hanging out. Personally I could have went the whole season without having to look at that many boobs. Correct me if I am wrong, what happened to being conservative and leaving it to the imagination. I guess you have to show your breasts to sell a record or a TV show.................

Billi Thomson Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

Does ANYONE not think that billy ray SUCKKED?? That dude was just horrible. Needs a haircut, shave, and personality transplant! Miley would have been MUCh better.

I think Gabe has a longer shelf life than does Melissa, who may be prone to hang up her spurs after making a couple million to tend after those boys.

Shawn was too inconsistent, but has great talent, especially songwriting!!

The blond chick that got eliminated also has awesome potential. But Coffey needs to go get a job as a roadie for Springsteen or something.

After learning that Rich is handling Lawson's album, I think I'll just have to boycott it. That dude is just full of himself. He actually could use some big time critiquing himself.

Jewel is a fake country act--as everyone knows. But she's still an awesome talent. Needs a new makeup artist though (looked cute as hell a week ago, and way overdone last night).

Interesting show--some of the eliminated acts (except Coffey) will end up making a big splash.

tierza b Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

Wohooooo for Melissa winning, she earned it.

grandmacats Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

With a host like Billy Ray it was hard to watch! The show really needs somebody else! Billy Ray looked and acted like he had just gotten out of bed; frumpy and not fully awake yet!

TXFAN Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

faithaa075 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

I stand corrected. When Steele asked Lawson if she wrote that song (Ready to Stand) she shook her head no and rubbed her teeth with her tounge. She looks guilty throughout the judges comments, in my opinion. Don't think she wrote it folks. Check it out on YouTube. Melissa Lawson-Ready to Stand-Full w/intro/judges-week 7

In response to the above comment by faithaa075, Melissa actually goes to my family's church and has been a member of our church's worship group for many years. The song "Ready to Stand" was written jointly with another member of the worship group, Margi Howard. This has never been a secret, and I assure you Margi is in full support of Melissa singing that awesome song - actually if you look at the nbc.com/nashvillestar website under Melissa's profile, you'll see that credit for that song is given to both ladies.

faithaa075 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

In week 7, when Melissa Lawson was required by the competition to write her own song, she states in a video of her practice session with John Rich that she wrote "Ready to Stand", but later in the competition after she sang it she was asked if she wrote the song and it looked like she shook her head no. Before her song began, she was introduced as performing her own song. In another (EW) interview after the show, she again states that she wrote it. The reason this matters, Pago, is that she was being judged for her songwriting talent that night and she didn't produce what was required of her in that part of the competition. If she didn't write a song by herself, she should have admitted it, gave credit for the help, and took her lumps. If she didn't write it herself, she can't record that song without giving credit to whomever helped her. Point blank, she cheated. Gabe was robbed. Check it out on YouTube. Melissa Lawson-Ready to Stand-Full w/intro/judges-week 7.

Joan Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I am not a big country fan and have not been a watcher of Nashville star. However, I watched a couple of weeks ago and got hooked on Melissa. I wound up voting for her many times and am so glad that she won. She is TERRIFIC!!

Lynn Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

I don't know why anyone would say Melissa was trying to get "pity votes". Why would she need pity for having 5 children. She is very fortunate to have such a wonderful family. I definitely voted for her and never thought twice about how many children she has. I voted because she was the better singer. I was not impressed with Gabe. He did get better towards the end but mostly he sounds like everyone else out there. Melissa is refreshing. Congrats Melissa. I can't wait to hear your single on the radio.

Amber Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I was never much of a country fan until I saw Trace Adkins on the Apprentice, I saw he was on the show and was hooked. I am glad Melissa won, she is a fabulous singer, the best voice of all of them. I loved Gabe too, and I think he will be successful. I hate the dramatic pauses when they kick someone off. BIlly Ray better stick to being Miley's Dad, he is terrible. I think Jeff and John make the show. Jewel looks wierd every week and I think her voice is crappy. What was with the S&M breasts on the hostess last night, I thought it was a family show, and the Daisey Duke girls??? In poor taste as was singing Time of My Life, that was a dumb song. I will watch again, I think the mentors do a great job, much better than the drival on AMerican Idol. Melissa is beautiful, and talented and I hope she has an awesome career.

DanOregon Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Leah, I agree. Would have been better if it was the two ladies singing that song.

wild bill Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Billy Ray, WEAK! Damn he sucked as a host. Mellissa has a good voice but wont sell many records or concert tickets. The song is good but not big enough for everyone to relate with it.
Its a "winners song"
Gabe is more commericial but the truth is they are both going to have a TOUGH time scoring a radio it.

Leah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

The duet "Time of My Life" was in very, very bad taste. Here's Gabe, a young, gawky guy singing an embarrassing love song with Melissa, a woman whose every comment includes her 5 boys and her husband....And my goodness! There they are in the audience on Dad's lap while Mom's singing "With my body and soul
I want you more than you'll ever know
So we'll just let it go
Don't be afraid to lose control
Yes I know what's on your mind
When you say "Stay with me
tonight." Or did Gabe sing that? Either way...tacky tacky. It wasn't worth the shame of it all just to get the chorus line in there: "I've had the time of my life."

I've been unusually negative, but this last episode really put me off AND it was dull as dirt.

erica Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

I recorded the final show and was absolutely shocked that Melissa won. I am still amazed that she wasn't ejected weeks ago. Even the judges were shocked. Gabe won't have long to wait for another recording contract. He has a remarkable country voice and will succeed even without being the winner of the Nashville Star.

Vickie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

I am VERY HAPPY that Melissa Lawson won!!. I voted for her 100 times. I know a GREAT singer when I hear one. & for her records coming. I will BUY EVERYONE OF THEM!!!!!!!!

DanOregon Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

The finalists did come a long way on the show - but I wouldn't be in market for a touring rig any time soon. Anyone know what Angela Hacker or Erika Jo are up to?

Leah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

What made this show watchable was the competition's suspense and the judging, not last night's unending kudos fest. Apart from Coffey, I think the top 5 were all very good, but my favorites ended up being Ashlee, Shawn, and Gabe. I was something of Melissa fan until I noted her comments as she grew closer to the finsih line. Her self-aggrandizement was beyond belief, e.g. telling the crowed that all who voted for HER were "the real winners." Proclaiming in the studio that SHE would be the winner. But what struck me most were all the times she claimed she'd change her kids' lives yet couldn't give a coherent answer when questioned how her win WOULD change her boys' lives. Surely she knows that if she's actually successful--which remains to be seen, Melissa--her boys will have less of her time ("quality time" is mostly BS), nannies, disrupted schedules. Their atypical lives could affect them negatively. No, I see a fame addict with $$ signs in her eyes like all reality contestants.

Bob Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

If the show comes back next season, please have a new host. Billy Ray Cyrus' lack of a discernible personality as well as mediocre singing talents, as evidenced in the final show, make it a chore to sit through Nashville Star.

Mike Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

I would have been happy if Gabe had won because when he wants to he can sing the "Old Country" music as well as the new "rock influenced" stuff that's out there. I didn't really care for all of the other stuff they were making him do. Alan Jackson and George Strait don't do ANY of that when they perform. No, they just go up there on stage and get it done. Now, Melissa Lawson, in my opinion, was the better singer. I would love to hear what she can do with a Patsy Cline number! Congrats to the two finalists. I just feel Shawn and Coffey weren't in the same league as the other two. I wish they would do more "old school" stuff on the show. I loved seeing The Possum out there last night! A true high point of the show.

Dianne Carrillo Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Melissa Lawson is great but I was shocked she beat Gabe. I think it will be hard to sell tickets for a Melisaa Lawson concert unless she is opening up for someone big. I think Gabe will be abel to sellout the concert crown by hisself.
ahrd to see tickets

Susan Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I have never missed a Nashville Star episode since it started.... until this season. NBC has destroyed this show. It wasn't country - what with all the pop music, the contestants were horrible - other than the final 3. I could only manage to sit thru the last couple of shows completely. And did they have to destroy the final show by having Melissa and Gabe sing "I've had the time of my life" - how sad. Please, Nashville Star needs to go back to the way it was.

I was a bit unhappy to see that Melissa won rather than Gabe, who I was hoping for -- he reminds me of George Strait a little bit. Melissa is great though and I will be praying for her as she deals with being away from her little guys as much as she's going to have to be. She reminds me a bit of both Wyonna and Trisha Yearwood. People are saying there are some winners we never hear from -- do you remember George Canyon -- he is doing amazingly well -- well at least in Canada anyway!

Linda Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

Absolutely love Melissa Lawson! Would buy her CD in a heartbeat! Gabe Garcia I believe will become a star as well but Melissa outshined him. Melissa was a hit from the getgo.

curiousMe Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Does anyone know if they ever reveal the actual number of votes that each contestant received?

fanny Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

READING THOSE COMMENTS SOME OF YOU PEOPLE ARE SO IMMATURE..MELISSA DIDNT HAVE TO HAVE ANY PITY THE GIRL CAN SING AND IT SO NATURAL...GABE IS A GOOD SINGER AND HE WILL ALSO GO SOMEWHERE IN THIS BUSINESS..SHAWN MIGHT DO SOMETHING BUT SHE REALLY NEEDS TO LOSE THE ATTITUDE ITS REALLY BAD AND IT COMES ACROSS..JEWEL I DONT KNOW WHO TOLD HER SHE COULD SING..I GUESS IF YOU CALL NOSE SINGING ..SINGING I GUESS SHE CAN SING..MY OPINION SHED BE BETTER AS A HOST...MELISSA YOU WERE GREAT AND YOU WILL BE GREAT ...MAKE IT BIG FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY..YOU CAN SING GIRL AND DONT LET NO ONE TELL YOU ANY DIFFERENT YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL VOICE

Stacey Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Selfish.... Give me a break!!!!! She did this for her children, regardless of their age. She has a very devoted husband who does a fantastic job! Ask him if he minds!!!!

Melissa was my first choice from the very first show! She is fantastic! Regardless of whether she wrote her own song or not, SHE CAN SING!!! I'm sure there are a lot of songwriters out there that would LOVE her to sing their songs!!!

GREAT JOB MELISSA!!!!!

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!

Jeffrey Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

What's the point of moaning over the passing of "real country" into modern country? Music changes, tastes change, fans change. Miranda Lambert is not as country as some artists, she's more country than others. The same is true of Melissa Lawson (as a singer---I hate when reality show contestants are called "artists" while the show's still on the air). Gabe Garcia sounds more country than many people, but that doesn't mean he'll be successful. The desire for that kind of voice might go even further out of vogue for fans. So what? If you don't like country, don't listen to it, but what's the point of complaining about the pop-country sounding mother of five winning? And who is anyone to call her a bad mother for wanting to win? She has a husband that might never need to work again (if she succeeds) and he'll be with the kids. Big stars can bring their kids around with them and fly home on every day off. I guess "Selfish Winner" is the greatest mom ever, to be casting stones...

Momof5girls Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Hats off to Melissa! For the ones of you that thought she gave a pity trip for having 5 boys, you must not have kids or need to have more. She was the best from the very beginning, I thought Gabe was excellent but not original he never tried to make his own sound he sounded like the artist song that he sang. For the ones of you that don't think she can have a successful career and still be a mother of 5 and a wife, I think your wrong. Through the show the entire family showed determination, respect, and lots of love for each other. I hope the mother of 5 blows the walls off of country music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Selfish Winner Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

With five kids, I think it was completely selfish of Ms. Lawson to even consider becoming a Nashville star...I don't think she realizes what it all entails - the travelling, the time away from home/family...Money may change a lot for her, but maybe she could have waited until her boys were older...At least, so ALL of them weren't under the age of 10. Then again, that's just my opinion.

Jones Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

OK, so both finalists will have some kind of carrer. I agree that Gabe is more Nashville, but music is dynamic and changes. I think we all agree that Billy Cyrus was a big faux pas!
Now, for the judges... I respect the hell out of John Rich (I am a musician). Steele, don't know but his comments on performance seemed to be in line with my thoughts. To here Jewel, who has admitted having problems with timing in print, say that a contestant needed to wath his/her pitch or timing was ludicris. Didn't she start out as a folkie singer that now thinks she is country? How many country (or POP) albumns has she racked up after her initial run? Duh! Coffey, great performer but not STAR. Hope next year, if it even happens, is better... I didn't even bother to watch or TIVO the final. Good Luck!

Pago Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

Melissa winning is exactly what should have happened. This was no surprise so why anyone is complaining, is beyond me. She has a wonderful voice and will actually go farther than last night's stage. She admitted to not being a songwriter and said that she did get help with the original song. So there you have it, now leave it alone. She sang it beautifully and I, for one, look forward to hearing it often. Congrats to Gabe, as well. He has a tremendous voice. There will be a recording contract for him, without doubt. Both melissa and Gabe are country, another fact that no true country fan can contest. So, hush to all you naysayers! I fully agree that Billy Ray had no business being the host and having him there hurt the show and the ratings...listening and watching him, week after painful week. They should have had him bow out immediately and let Katie Cook host it solo...looking forward to buying Melissa and Gabe's albums.

Linda Weygint Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

Just wondering if anyone knows is John Rich is any relations to the late Don Rich that performed with Buck Owens?

Steve Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

To Protoplasm-since you've obviously spent time reading these blogs maybe you need a life too.

227 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Great review Mandi! Glad it came down to Gabe and Melissa. I don't even know where to begin with what was wrong with the opening number. Or Katie Cook's outfit.

shelly Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

CONGRATULATION MELISSA.....you made Texas proud!!!!
and yes i voted for you whhy to go

protoplasm Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

wOW, YOU FOLKS NEED A LIFE!

Ric from Omaha Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Mrs. Lawson was deserving...she's the only one I'd pay $25 for a ticket to see her perform on stage live...other than Jewel! Billy Ray was a poor emcee/host. Maybe he needed community service hours and he donated his time.

momof2boys Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I was surprised and disappointed. Gabe's style is much more refreshing. I would like to have seen someone with a little more country flair as Gabe has. I'm not fond of warbling. I expect to hear more from him and Ashlee Hewitt.

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Please put us and Billy Ray out of his misery - he was way too stiff to host.

Angie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

People are still pretty prejudice, Gabe Garcia is a better "country singer" than Melissa. Because he is Hispanic, he did not get the votes he deserve.Melissa is great but she used her "pity me" I have 5 boys to change their lives if I win cause. Both talents are superb but I still feel Gabe Garcia should have won!!!

real fan Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Does anyone remember what real country is? George Strait for example. All this pop sounding music is not country! Miranda Lambert is not even country! Gabe Garcia should have won! There are still traditionalist out here that don't need to go to a concert and see people hang from the rafters and see firworks. Yes Melissa was good but I thought this was a "country" competition. And as far as Coff'ay being a real cowboy....just because you raised a few rabbits doesn't make you a cowboy.

john Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

to who asked about 2007 nashville star winner angela hacker - warner bros released a promo country soul/muscle shoals album "the winner is...angela hacker" exclusively thru walmart (which i liked alot!) that capitolized on songs angela did on nashville star but didn't follow thru with a fully-realized angela cd of originals as expected; she has since done well-received shows at the grand ole opry & cmt festival & is now back with fame/emi & is currently touring with cowboy troy & james leblanc; i totally love angela hacker & hope she follows miranda lamberts' path to stardom touring & making a name for herself the old-fashioned way like the country queen she is! check her out online & sample some great country-soul vocals:)

Alaska Fan Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

In Alaska we missed the whole show! There was a Congressional debate on!! it sucked to watch the show all season then miss the finale! And Cyrus is an awful host!

Stan The Man Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

To Monica-I never could stand Anastasia and thought she was a bit too mean sprited in her criticisms, but after listening to the tripe coming from the judges this year, I found myself actually missing her.

Cindy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Melissa is the greatest. I have enjoyed listening to her every week and voted for her every week. She is without a doubt the best singer in this group and I will buy her cd when it comes out. Shawn, how phoney.

Monica Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Stan the Man listened to Anastasia Brown too much...making her ears bleed was her favorite saying. I was less than impressed with NBC's version of NS. Billy Ray was horrible...I loved Melissa but wasn't inspired to vote. Maybe when they start promoting their winners I'll vote again. The last votes I cast were two years ago when Chris Young won. Has anyone heard anything from Angela Hacker, last year's winner? Jewel is a better host than judge...I liked Blake Shelton as a judge...he was funny. Change hosts and judges.

faithaa075 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

I stand corrected. When Steele asked Lawson if she wrote that song (Ready to Stand) she shook her head no and rubbed her teeth with her tounge. She looks guilty throughout the judges comments, in my opinion. Don't think she wrote it folks. Check it out on YouTube. Melissa Lawson-Ready to Stand-Full w/intro/judges-week 7

STX Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Melissa Lawson was my pick from the very begining when she belted out her first note! So what if she isn't a size 6? She's old enough to have sense, not like the young ones that have done absolutely nothing but take the prize and run. CONGRATULATION MELISSA.....you made Texas proud!!!!

shannon anthony Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

man with five kids melissa isn't only a nashville star it sounds like she's a star of the bedroom too.

lily Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

PLEASE remove Billy Ray as host - no personality and so obviously reading cue cards!

nicole Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

im glad melissa won she deserved it i just hope she can handle being away from those boys for long periods of time

Jerry Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

I so wanted to like this show. I really tried. Cyrus as host is just a nightmare - only reminding us why he is a one-hit wonder. He shows no personality and no energy. And, John Rich?? Please. I've never seen anyone with so much attitude and so little reason to have it. Had he been a contestant, he probably would have been voted off long ago. Jewel and Jeffrey Steele are just fine -- great mentors and genuinely talented. Replace Cyrus, replace Rich -- and do a better job of finding talent. It looks like someone decided on a Monday to have a show and scrapped up the talent from whomever was on the sidewalk just before showtime. This could be a GREAT show. As it is, it is only mediocre. Melissa Lawson and Gabe Garcia were the real talents on the show - no one else was even close.

Kay Hoefer Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

NBC CHANNEL 5 - DALLAS TEXAS.... HOW DARE SPOIL THE OUTCOME OF THE SHOW FOR ME!... 2 commercials prior to the announcement the local news decided to leak the outcome... THANKS A LOT!

rubyd222@bellsouth.net Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Melissa,
I am so proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't beleive it last night when you were announced the winner. I have been pulling for you from the start. I jumped up and screamed; I was almost in tears and my husband was. You go girl and take care of the boys.
your #1 fan
Debra Greene

Bob Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I will not buy her album but would have bought Gabe Garcia's Album

Nikki (mother of 4) Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

I can't wait to get Melissa's CD. I voted for her every Monday night for 2 hours. She deserves it more than anyone. WAY TO GO MELISSA!

Teresa Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Melissa was my pick right from the very first episode. I am so happy she won. She has a beautiful voice and I'm sure she will go far. Can't wait to buy her first album!

Stan The Man Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

So glad to see this season over. I still find it hard to fathom how NBC managed to completely mess up this show. If it wasn't the Go-Go dancers, the pyrotechnics or the pop songs the contestants were forced to sing (which had nothing to do with country), it was the caliber of contestants they managed to put though to the final ten. No wonder Melissa won, she was the only who could even carry a tune. My ears are still bleeding from listening to Coffay. Put this back on cable where they don't feel obligated to American Idolize the format and get back to it's roots.

Red Headed Stranger Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Please NBC, change the show next year. Bring Jewel back as the host, get rid of Billy Ray who never smiles, get two new judges to go along with Jeffrey Steele and bring in some real talent this time. Oh yeh, please bring back Katie Cook(* *)

#1TX_Fan Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Heck yeah I will buy Melissas first album. I can't wait!!

RTA Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Funny how these things turn out. I was just hoping Shawn would come in 3rd and I got my wish. Wanted Gabe to win the whole shootin' match but he's a shoo-in for a contract because he has such a "country" voice that can't be faked. He'll be just fine down the road. Melissa's only chance for a career was to win this thing outright so now at least she has a running start. It ain't at all fair but how many overweight female country stars (and that's not limited to that genre) are there? I'm just sayin' what is obvious, folks. Congrats, Melissa and Gabe. The cream definitely rose to the top this time around.

Starla Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Who cares. Never watched this show, never will. Just bored. I shot my horse, got a deevorce, no remorse, of course. I'm quite a lass with my big fat arse. All the boys say hey to my vajayjay.

faithaa075 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Gabe got robbed. Melissa got the pity vote. Wynonna got a second-rate back-woods-bar version of her let loose. Melissa oversings everything to the point of cheesy (like her dancing), but hey, guess alot of you like that i.e. Carrie Underwood. More importantly though, on the night that the contestants performed their solos, Melissa said to the judges, into the micro-phone, that she had help writing her song, but that comment was wisked away and never heard again. So who helped her write the song? Why wasn't it her new solo? When is the lawsuit coming?

Debbie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Oh my god mellissa was so great! I was junping off the couch when they she'd won. Way to go Girl! My best to you and your beautiful family!

poeboy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Nothing ever comes of the winner. Heck, the biggest star this show has produced was the third place finisher in season 1, Miranda Lambert. Everyone else has either A) Done nothing, like Angela Hacker, Chris Young (so far) and Brad Cotter, or B) Made minor waves before fading away to nothing, like Buddy Jewell and Erika Jo. I predict Pearl heart and Ashlee Hewitt to be the bigger stars from this season.

bas Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Ack - I don't know why I keep calling Melissa "Miranda" - it must just be stuck in my head for some reason! Sorry! Also, does anyone know what's become of last year's winner?

suzette Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Melissa Lawson is going to do for Nashville Star what Carrie Underwood did for American Idol. Missy L. can sing! AND she's got the personality and the stage presence to take it all the way. She's a true talent.

bas Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Miranda did a great job, but I was rooting for Gabe. He was the only one on the whole show whose voice would make me stop to listen if I was scanning through radio channels. I just like that whole George Strait, Alan Jackson kind of vibe. Miranda has a lovely voice, but it's definitely that pop-ification of country, which drives me nuts. As to the comparisons with Wynona -- if you've ever seen Wy in concert, you would know that Miranda isn't even in the same ballpark.

rcurley Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

no way should Coffey been in the top 4
Ashlee was a way better singer than him and more talented. she should have been in the top 3. I like Shawn but I think Ashlee was better.

Shelly Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

I am very happy for Melissa. She is an Arlington, Texas girl and that makes her special with me. I thought Gabe was awesome also. He just needs to connect with the audience more. He is on his way. These two were my favorites from the start. Coffey is not that good and I agree Ashley should have beat him out.

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

No No No to the album. LOL. Like someone else said - being the best two in this competition isn't really saying a whole lot. Both are utterly forgettable. I'd be shocked if they had a bigger career than Angela Hacker (the last Nashville Star - remember her?)

kim Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

I think the right person won and yes I am buying the cd!!! Gabe is going to make it as well I am sure they both have mighty fine voices. Congrats Melissa I voted for you all alog and glad you are the next star of Nashville.

maggie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Melissa won! I am so thrilled about it! I heard her sing "Flower in the Rain" and I was hooked. Awesome voice. Yes, I will buy!

JENN Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

I WAS SO GLAD THAT MELISSA WON. I ENJOYED HEARING GABE, BUT MELISSA WAS MY FAVORITE. I AM PRETTY CERTAIN THAT I WILL BUY MELISSA'S MUSIC. IF THEY TOUR CLOSE TO MY HOME, I WOULD LIKE TO GO SEE THEM, BUT NOT TO SEE COFFEY. I DIDN'T THINK HE WAS COUNTRY AT ALL.

Zarah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

I was impressed with both finalists. It didn't look as tho it was killing them to sing. Most singers look as if every note they sing is painful. Melissa, however has the stage presence & attitude to pull this off. Just like Miranda Lambert did. As someone mentioned above Melissa reminds me of Wynona a lot too. Spunk, size & a git-r-done attitude. What if it all goes right is a great song & she does it well. A true pro!

Wendy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

I can't say that I'm a country fan particularly, but I know talent when I hear it, and Melissa is great! Country, cross-over, pop, whatever. That girl has great vocals and if the first song that she ever wrote and performed is any hint of things to come, she has a wonderful song-writing career ahead of her also. I just stumbled on Nashville Star by accident, but I will watch it every year, if she is an example of the talent in this genre. But they have to get rid of Billy Ray Stiff Man Cyrus as a host! He was the worst part of every week. Isn't there anyone else they can get?

Whit Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

No to whether I will buy the single/album. While the viewers at least got the most talented two in the final, they are both a disappointment. We need more Carter Family/Jimmie Rodgers/early Hank Williams country music. What I heard on this program aint' country.

Terry Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

I'm happy for Mellisa !
And I agree with Rebekah that
Ashlee should be touring with
them, NOT Coff'ay !
I was rooting for Ashlee from the beginning, i still think she will get a recording contract soon !

Rebekah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

Yes to the album most definitely!!!
And if the tour comes to Georgia,
most def. yes just to see her perform but I'll be somewhere else when Coff"ay" is on stage. Ashley should be touring with them, not him.

Face it you guys, Melissa is a powerhouse. She'll be right up there with Wynonna (who I've thought se reminds me of from day 1), Trisha, and Martina. Give her time, she's already on the right road. And John believes in her so He'll do great things with and for her.

Stephanie T. Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

1. Shawn Mayer needs a Spanx Bra.
2. I feel bad for Billy Ray because it must have felt awkward knowing that the only song anyone knows he sang is Acky Breaky, yet his daughter is bigger than him.

Mel was awesome. Congrats! And, yeah Garcia will make Freddie Fender proud.
