Isle need to see your Must List picks

Aug 5, 2008, 12:11 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Must List

I don't speak Italian, but I'm hooked on Capri, an Italian soap currently in its second season. I don't really understand all the details of what's going on — something about the romantic life of a woman (played by Gabriella Pession, shown in the excerpt embedded above) who runs a restaurant on the resort isle of the title — but when you have the sparkling blue water and the pretty, pretty people, the language barrier becomes irrelevant. My neighbors, who pay for the premium Italian channel RAI, are watching the current season, but reruns of the first season are airing for free every weeknight on WMBC, a station available here in the tri-state area and perhaps elsewhere. Since I'm not traveling anywhere this summer, Capri is my vacation.

Which pop cultural escapes are on your Must List this week? List up to three of your current faves in movies/TV/music/books/games/online. Please include your e-mail address, in case we choose your submission for the magazine. Deadline is Wednesday, August 6, at 10 a.m. ET.

joules Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Psych, Mad Men, The Closer, Burn Notice, (I know that's four)

Emmy Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

I'm still creeped out this week by Little Voldemort Jr. in the "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" trailer. It's way more exciting than the release of "Breaking Dawn." Come on...how is the image of Dumbledore surrounded by fire in a cave NOT cool?

Brian Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

Woth everyone carrying on about Breaking Dawn" I had to throw a shout out to Stephanie Meyers' first "adult" novel, The Host. It's a thoughtful and original take on the old sci-fi standard of alien body-snatching and well worth the read.

sally Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

It may be from a childrens' album, but take a listen to They Might Be Giants' "Alphabet of Nations". They should totally use it during the opening ceremony of the Olympics. And no, 'West Xylophone' is not a real country. :)

Mikey Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 05:04 AM EST

The Hills Season 3 on DVD- LC, Audrina, and Lo living together was the perfect drama to end the third season! Now will Audrina and LC stay friends or is this another Heidigate?
Paris Hilton on FunnyorDie.com- To that "Old White Dude", don't mess with Paris or she just might ruin your chance for the White House.

Josh Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 03:12 AM EST

oh and Burn Notice. With the return of Nate and the growing tension between Michael and Fi this brilliant show might just top its first season. Oh and I am so glad they didn't stick with the whole Michael going to therapy thing. After the Sopranos, Tell Me You Love Me, In Treatment, and Monk I am a little tired of that road.

Josh Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

Oh and Burn Notice with the return of Nate and the building tension between Michael and Fi, it would appear as if the sophmore season of this fantastic show just might top its first

Josh Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 03:03 AM EST

Danny McBride an underrated comedy force. whose has on many occasions saved some films including the heartbreak kid and hot rod. His role in Pineapple Express should be a brilliant departure from his typical mustachioed doughboy.

The Comic-Con Posters for Watchmen which can be seen at http://rss.warnerbros.com/watchmen/

Kimber Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:44 AM EST

1. Big Brother -- have to love it, but too bad the earthquake didn't get rid of Jesse and a few others
2. "Ace Young" by Ace Young. Great mix of rock, pop and R&B...plus a smokin' video for the single.
3. Celebrity IVF: the new "wave" of kiddos in LA! HOw can this many twins be possible? OH, wait, it's Hollywood

pede Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

My Must see for TV is no longer available. Can anyone tell me why FX has chosen to stop showing Buffy reruns? Any chance you tough guys at EW can go beat up the guys at FX? Thank you! (said with a southern accent a la Brenda on The Closer)

Nix Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:35 AM EST

1. Generation Kill. Sundays on HBO. Maybe you won't watch it now, but you'll be hearing about it for the rest of your life. It's that good.

2. Conor Oberst's self-titled album under his own name.

3. Everybody already knows abotu Mad Men right? Okay, good.

Erin Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:14 AM EST

1. "Breaking Dawn" by Stephenie Meyer. I know that half the people will be nominating this but truly it is the culmination of everything we love about the series and I was sad to finish it knowing it was the last one.

2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince trailer. It looks dark and intriguing and gives promise to the idea that this one will be good.

3. Those crazy ads for HBO's new series True Blood. Even if I didn't know anything about it I would still watch it because it's interesting. Plus Alan Ball + HBO = must be good.

RobC Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

Jay Brannan's "Goddamned" - One of the stars of "Shortbus" has crafted a thoughtful collection of folk music. Best songs include "Goddamned" and "Half-Boyfriend."

Raven_Moon Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

1) Breaking Dawn by Stepanie Meyer (Amazing!)
2) Pinapple Express
3) Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Brad Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

MUST:
1. MUSIC: SOULFLY "CONQUER" - another awesome set from Max Cavalera and Co.
2. TV: SUPERNATURAL - Season 4 is coming and Season 2 is about to hit DVD.
3. COMIC BOOK: "DEATH WALKS THE STREETS" - Vampires, Demons, Zombies, Werewolves, The Mob, Oh My!
4. MOVIE: PINEAPPLE EXPRESS - Apatows latest can't get here quick enough!

david gutowski (largehearted boy) Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

1) Alina Simone's Everyone Is Crying Out to Me Beware covers album of Russian folk-pop singer-songwriter Yanka Dyagileva is the most daring album of the year.

2) Alex Robinson's Too Cool To Be Forgotten graphic novel is another wonder from the man who drew Box Office Poison.

3) Andrew Davidson's The Gargoyle is a darkly mesmerizing perfect summer read.

Broadway Baby Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

Never been a big fan of John Mayer's music (though he seems to be a hell of a guy) but I'm digging his interpretation of Free Fallin' - feels like summer winding down.

Candy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

1. Supernatural - rewatching Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD and catching the repeats of Season 3 while DYING for Season 4 to start (and Season 3 to be released on DVD).
2. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - so loving Neil & Nathan and the whole Whedonverse.
3. USA Network's trifecta of Burn Notice, Monk & Psych

NorthernStar Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

May I come up with an un-favourite? Because that has to be Wanted. Seriously, two hours of consecutive torture scene that compete with each other over the most gross crown. Zero dialogues, zero reason, not even if you decide this is a comics-ish piece.
The Dark Knight - at least there's some meat there, and not just in the form of superb acting on the part of Ledger and Oldman (Bale is just wooden. Worst Batman ever, IMO. I miss Micheal Keaton), but the film makes you think. And cringe. And get nightmares too.
And on a more positive note - Mary McCormack on In Plain Sight. She's just as unsweet, as cynical and as perfect as you can ask for a summer night. Granted, I wouldn't want her for a BFF, but it's refreshing to see a nonapologetic no crying into her pillow female character on TV.

Jessica-again Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

1. Catching up on BSG via hulu and my friends dvd collections-how was I not watching this show already?
2. Ludo's super catchy single "Love Me Dead"-try to sit still while it's playing. The rest of the album, 'You're Awful, I Love You', is pretty darn great as well.
3. Trying to sell an autographed Miley Cyrus framed photo. Any takers? (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)
3. (For real) I have been obsessed with Dr. Horrible for weeks now and my love doesn't appear to be fading anytime soon...

Jane Cobb's sister Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Starship Troopers 3 on DVD! The straight to video sequel feels more like the REAL part two of Paul Verhooven's Sci Fi Classic. This movie features the hot vulcan from that Star Trek show and a naked Casper Van Dien! That ought to earn a spot on SOMEONE'S must list...

Jill Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

1. Brad Paisley's new song "Waiting on a Woman"
2. Season 1 of "Mad Men" on DVD (I know, I am behind, but I am slowly catching up!)
3. Apple's app store - I am really enjoying the free iPhone games - specifically the Labyrinth game!

Kate Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

1. I'll second the vote for The Middleman on ABC Family, just in hopes of canceling out the ABSURD amount of pimping they do for that show.
2. Breaking Dawn, but for not being as absolutely loved as the first three books in the Twilight series. However, at least there was some acknowledgement of sex in this book!
3. Anderson Cooper, for his blatant hate of the Lohan clan on 'Regis and Kelly.'

Melissa Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

1. "Torch" by Alanis Morisette...a perfectly heartbreaking window into the end of a relationship and all those things you miss.
2. So You Think You Can Dance... perfectly infectious summer entertainment.
3. hulu.com...perfectly handy and way to catch up on Colbert.

JR Coleman Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

1. Dr. Blogstein's Radio Happy Hour (www.DrBlogstein.com)

2. Elisabeth Moss of Mad Men manages to be both plain and hot.

3. Phoenix Block: They're what U2 Used2 be

Todd Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

I'll second the vote for The Wackness, specifically the Wackness soundtrack. All of the best hip hop from the mid-90s. The movie's pretty darn good too.
Also on my list this week is the Flobots "Handlebars." Who knew this song would be this catchy? I've only heard it on the radio once or twice, but I'm already singing it in my head. Its just that addictive.
And finally, can we all agree that hatred of Jessie on Big Brother 10 is an absolute must. Do you really think its possible for a guy to be this stupid and annoying? No wonder Ollie and April are spending so much time having sex under bedsheets; they just don't want to listen to Jessie talk anymore.

jcarla Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

rma0017, look for The Long Halloween and Dark Victory for more Batman and see where The Dark Knight's version of Harvey Dent came from.
List: New Mythbusters!
Project Runway!

rma0017 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Sigh...I'll second the Dark Knight, but I'll follow it up with Heath Ledger. I know it's becoming (unfortunately) cliche. But I still haven't gotten over the fact that this man was taken from us too soon. If the Academy fails to honor him (and honor the film with a best picture nod) it will have rendered itself irrelevant in my opinion. (Which it borderlined doing after years of ignoring Scorsese and giving the Best Picture to Crash in 2005...ugh...)

I have gotten a kick out of reading old Batman comics, too - particularly Batman: Year One from Frank Miller. It makes the pain of never seeing Ledger's amazing Joker on screen again a little more bearable. Alright - I'll shut-up about it now.

Jess Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

1. The Middleman, on ABC Family. Silly premise, but great jokes.
2. The Project Rungay blog - spot-on commentary.

Miriam Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

I sometimes watch the German soap Verbotene Liebe (Forbidden Love) that someone has taken the good storylines out and subtitled in English. It's pretty good.

Marlene Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

i was abroad in rome this past semester and i was hooked on Capri. you should try finding italian big brother and wheel of fortune, just for the entertainment value of how crazy it is.

Must List:
1. Breaking Dawn
2. Pineapple Express
3. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

This summer, my must-see summer show is, once again, General Hospital Night Shift. No, I can't explain ( but here goes); the spin-off is weekly , fun, and more enjoyable than parent soap GH. I get to see favorite characters (hello, Robin!) without having to wade through the ones I hate (buh-bye, Luke and Carly!).

dan Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

After watching Money Pit, Troop Beverly Hills, and old Cheers reruns, it is pretty safe to say that I love Shelley Long. Please come back to us, Shelley!

Lee Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Sciety" by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows. A beutifully told tale of the occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II.

Lena Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

When I saw "Isle" as part of the Must List title I thought for sure it was going to be a reference to Isle Esme...

Danielle Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

"Breaking Dawn" read it so fast after picking it up at midnight that I was done and rereading it by 6 p.m. Saturday. My only sadness is that it's ending.

My new find, through Stephenie Meyer also, Blue October. That's a serious soundtrack for the Twilight series.

Jill Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

1. Ace Young's debut self-titled album. Arguably the best album from an AI alum. Produced by Desmond Child and featuring songs by Diane Warren and Ace himself, it is sure to blow up if radio is willing to take a chance on an independent artist.

2. Torchwood on DVD; Never before have I watched anything sci-fi but this show is so cleverly written, superbly acted and timely, that I forget that it is a show about aliens...although something tells me the moral is a little greater than the means in which they tell the story.

3. Robert Hoffman's "Yes Dance" from Carnival '07. I watched it on repeat a few months back but have revived my obsession after watching Step Up 2 The Streets. It is not only hilarious but features some really amazing dancing.

Shine the Light: The Stones still rock!

jennifer Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

1. breaking dawn
2. sisterhood of the traveling pants
2. teen choice awards

strickens_girl Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Neil Patrick Harris. After watching Dr Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog and that hilarious Old Spice commercial, I love him even more than before. I didn't know that was even possible!

idigress Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

1. The Wackness - it was a great film, I am happy that I caught it! Set in 1994 - one of the best soundtracks!

2. Breaking Dawn - bought the book at midnight on Friday, started reading it Saturday at 9a was finished on Sunday at 1p. Great stuff!

3. Diary of a Call Girl - caught up on the last two episodes "on demand". I will be sad when this show is over!

laura Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I am watching ' Lalola ' from Argentina but it is being air in a Mexican channel Azteca 7. It is SO good. It is about a guy that was a playboy until he mess with the wrong woman and she did a spell on him and turn him into a woman. Now as a woman he is learning how to cope. It is laugh out loud type of soap. AND I am also watching a telenovela from Argentina call ' Vidas Robadas '. It is about the trafficing of humans ... every every intersting. Excellent acting and writing. I guess I am hook on Argentina soaps sooo that would be my vacation place if I could go.

Tom Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

My current three pop culture faves are:

1). Californicaton Season 1 on DVD - Maybe Fox Mulder's porn fetish should've tippped us off, but Duchovny kills in this hilariously raunchy comedy from Showtime. So glad I picked up the Season 1 set to prepare me for Season 2.

2). MovieRetriever.com - the world's hugest movie review guide (honestly, you could club someone to death with the book) is now online. Spending way too much time bitching about their reviews for 1941 and Let it Ride.

3). Paper Planes by MIA - Or as I call it "that song from the Pineapple Express trailer." I know I'm ten hours late for the prom on this one, but it's my new soundtrack for navigating the rows of cubicles at work.

Lauren Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

1) So You Think You Can Dance--I'll miss Chelsie and Mark, but I'm psyched for Twitch, Joshua, Courtney and especially Katee. So excited to see what the choreographers'll come up with for the final performance night.
2) Breaking Dawn. Yeah, yeah, I jumped on the bandwagon, but I'm enjoying the ride.
3) "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" from Hamlet 2. I saw a preview screening last week and it was hilarious! Theatre geeks rule!

Dave Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

The Closer, Project Runway, Katy Perry's "Hot 'N Cold." I'd also continue to pimp for The Dark Knight, but methinks that's in its own separate category of Must-ness.
