Muppets returning to TV? Let's join in song to celebrate!

Muppetshow_l You've heard about the all new Muppet movie script that Forgetting Sarah Marshall star (and Judd Apatow gang member) Jason Segel has been working on? Well, according to The Sun, there's a chance that if the big-screen project is a commercial and critical success, it might spin off into an all new Muppet TV series. Squeeeeeee!

[Let's all pause and catch our collective breath. If you need a moment, you can click here and read Whitney Pastorek's fascinating profile of nudity-loving Segel from a few months back.]

Anyhow, this development got me so excited, I had no choice -- no choice I tell you! -- but to pen a song of anticipation/celebration, set to The Muppets Show theme song. (Click here if you need musical accompaniment to my little ditty.)

It's time for Kermit's closeup
And yes, Miss Piggy's too
A total Muppets comeback, it cannot happen too soon

The perfect family program
A certain ratings bang
Cue Gonzo and Camilla but not Jason Segel's wang

Who misses goofy Beaker
And Bunsen Honeydew?
Who'd do a double cartwheel
If the Muppets were all new?

Big networks get things started!
Make sure it's Henson-hearted!
Why don't you get things started?
On the most sensational inspirational celebrational Muppetational
This is what we call The Muppet Show!

Hate to be the negative one...but without Jim Henson and with Disney at the helm...I've got my doubts. This is like someone wanting to remake "The Wizard of Oz"....doomed.

wwfpooh Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

Sesame Street, The Classic Muppets (The Muppet Show and Muppet Babies), Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and all the rest of those characters that are part of Jim's original vision...we desperately need them all back.

It's like a rainbow coming out of the dark cloud that's been deemed recent television. And speaking of rainbows:

"Why are there so many songs about rainbows? That's part of what rainbows do. Rainbows are memories and sweet dreamy reminders. What is it you'd like to do? All of us watching and wishing we'd find it. I know you're watching too. Someday you'll find it...The Rainbow Connection. The lovers, the dreamers, & you. Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what's on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide. So we've been told and some do choose to believe it, but I know they're wrong, wait and see. Someday we'll find it...The Rainbow Connection. The lovers, the dreamers, & me."

the muppets were the "best" thing thats happened to television. i think this country needs Sam The Eagle now more than ever.Oh, and Pigs In Space rules also...

Johnny Cook Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Oh yes, for God's sake bring them back. I loved the Muppets and will watch every show they air. Miss Piggy and Kermitt need a world tour road show, and Gonzo and his dancing chickens...especially Camilla. I want them all.

TT Sydney, Australia Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

I 100% agree with Ray! I had my first crush at age 5 years old on Gonzo, and that's never waned...As a teenager I felt like a female version of Kermit to my Catholic schoolgirl friends Ms Piggy's. One and all. And they then went on to grow up to be the two old guy critics on the balcony. The same ones who never missed a show!!! Just like the rest of us. Oh what lovely fond memories of my childhood. Is there no-one who can't see aspects of The Muppets in many they know and love in real life scenarios??? I hope they do Jim Henson's legacy proud and keep it as original as it was when it was best. Don't dilute The Muppets true essense. Keep it intact.

sarah Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

yesssss

Belle Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

Yay!!! I can't wait! When does it air?? I don't want to miss a single episode. Finally, something on TV that I can be excited about again. :)

Beth Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

Angel Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 02:43 AM EST

I love the muppets!!!I can't wait.Hopefully, they do awesomely. As long as they keep it old school.

chrissetchell Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

It's about time. We love the muppets. We look for the muppet show when it comes out on DVD. We beg you to bring them back.

Rebecca Warn Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

YAAAAAAY!!

Ray Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

I am beside myself. Please bring back the muppets, I like to take the time to slow down and reflect on my youth in this fast pace world.

Runninro Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

This better NOT be a tease...television worth watching again!! It would be a dream come true. Rolf, Fozzie, Gonzo, ANIMAL, Kermie, Miss Piggy!! I'm beside myself with excitement. I hope they don't screw it up and make it lame. Bring Paris Hilton on as a guest host and have Miss Piggy do a "HI-YAY" on her...that would be a classic.

My Perfect Apathy Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

I demand the return of THE ELECTRIC MAYHEM with new songs!

Anthony Rodrigues Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

Yes yes yes bring back the Muppet Show and them old geezers giving fozzi a hard time! Priceless

css Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST

Best line - Christmas Carol - "We're freezing our assets off!"

Matt Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

One word.....AAAAANNNNIIIIMAAALL!!!!

Sarah Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Peoples is peoples, is peoples working , is peoples sleeping? Peoples is peoples

Q Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

So....is it terribly sad that I could sing along with Slezak's lyrics without neededing a refresher for the tune?

I totally miss The Muppet Show. I'd be happy as a camper if they brought it back as long as it was handled the same way as it was back in the day.

Jan Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Will the Baby Muppets be adults now?????

gabrielle Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Y'all need to stop hating on the Christmas Carol. That music was so catchy and uplifting! From Space was not bad, but the worst one was the straight to tv Wizard of Oz adaptation. What a stinker. Everything else Muppet is pure evervescence to me. Anything new is welcome. Segel seems like he is taking the new movie seriously, so let's cross our fingers.

bruce Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Not sure how I feel. The first two movies and the TV show were magic but then thngs seemed to drop off. Lot of the politics and the belief system of the Hensons started to come out more and more; kinda like Dr. Seuss did. Still, I'm gonna hope for the best.

cindy Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

my favorite line in the first muppet movie is, when ruluf sings "i hope something better comes along".. "the pitter patter of the little feet of tadpoles!"
which kermit goes..."ah ruluf tadpoles don't have feet!"
"oh, sorry."
how can anybody not like the muppets!
i will always have a soft spot for animal, he was my favorite.

DListFan Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Is this truth?? Might they do it? So witty, heartfelt, slapstick, simple, complex and astoundingly entertaining for all ages. What's not to like? Come Back MUPPETS!

Statler and Waldorf...too funny.

AA Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Thank you for "Muppetational"! Word of the day!!

Snsetblaze Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

I can't wait.
Does anyone remember the Jim Henson Hour witht he beautiful white lion, and featuring The Storyteller? I do have the storyteller but wish the whole thing had been released on DVD. I can't quite remember Muppets Tonight. The Jim Henson hour did not last a season b/c it was put on Friday nights - the dead zone.
By the way, if you go to Youtube and search Muppets, look for Habenera with Beaker. It is hilarious.

Anne Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Awesome. PIIIIGGGGS INNNN SPAAAACCCCE.

LisaMama Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

My kids (of all people!) love The Muppet Show. When I told them that I watched it as a kid, they couldn't believe how lucky I was. Let's hope they keep it goofy, clever, and sweet, like other posters have said.

elena Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

All I am waiting for is the Forgetting-Sarah-Marshall-inspired-Jason-Segel-real-life dracula musical. When is that coming to a broadway stage/theater near me?
Jason Segel is comedy gold. It makes sense he and the muppets would get together. I'd watch anything with him in it! (or made by him. and the muppets have been in need of a comeback for a long while!)

Jason Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I am a very big Muppet fan and was very sad when Muppets Tonight didn't last. If you haven't seen the episode with Garth Brooks, you haven't really lived. Muppets Tonight was definitely worthwhile. The new characters that were introduced are already classics. Pepe anyone? Muppets from Space was a legitimate Muppet movie, but the more recent attempts don't add up. Muppets work when they are just being themselves, not dressed up for the Christmas Carol, or Treasure Island or Wizard of Oz. Those movies just don't work. Let's hope for the best.

Fletch Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Really, can anyone think of anything better than Elton John singing "Crocodile Rock" in that muppet-swamp? That ruled over everything back then...

aps Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I'm psyched. I love me some muppets. I agree that some of the last few muppet efforts haven't been too good. but, now is the time to change that and bring back the stories that really work with the characters we know and love.
personally, I enjoyed muppets tonight. I have rewatched almost all of the episodes fairly recently, and I have to say... I think it gets a bad wrap by a lot of people. It's not the best. But it definitely had some high-end muppet moments.

Richard Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

I recall the Muppet Show trying to be revamped years back. The original Muppet Show was charming, goofy and clever. I remember the failed revamp to be none of those things but risque and tacky. I don't think the magic can be brought back easily in these cynical times.

What about this? Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Dr. Teeth: "It's the cops. The fuzz. The P-I-"

Miss Piggy: "DON'T YOU DARE!!!"

To Leah Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

Thank you for that line! "Excuuuuse me for living" was the quintessential comeback for me and my classmates in the 3rd-5th grades.

Fletch Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Thank you for the clarification, Mazz.

What about when everyone was in this big conversation, and the crowd silences and you hear Janice saying, "Look, Mother. It's my life. OK. So if I want to live on a beach and walk around naked...”

DT Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

That would make me so so happy.

Mazz Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Fletch - that line was Beauregard...They were going to catch the thieves red-handed.

"I've got some paper towels!"

This is great news. This is well overdue after a string of some subpar efforts. Now is the time...make it happen and make Jim proud.

Fletch Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

NO WAY, LEAH!!! I forgot all about that. Thank you, water just got sprayed out of my nose. Just what I needed today.

Andy G. Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

Does anyone remember Muppets Tonight? Will this new show go down the same road?

Leah Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Best line from Muppets take Manhattan:
Penguins "hey, anybody got a job?"
Everyone else: "NO!!!"
Penguins "well exchuuuuse us for living!!!"

Fletch Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

Gre is right. The trifecta is "The Muppet Movie", "The Great Muppet Caper", and "The Muppets Take Manhattan".

Best line in "The Muppet Movie" is when Mel Brooks says, "Excuse the brain!"

Best line in "The Great Muppet Caper" is when Fozzy (was it Fozzy) says, "What color are their hands now?"

I am almost 40. Is it pathetic that I know those lines still? HA!!!

Scott K Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Please please please let this be true. Anyone who is not sure if this is a good idea, go out and get the original series on DVD. I want my neices and nephews to experiance this show like I did. Best news I've heard in a long time.

Gre Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Muppets Take Manhattan was the last great muppet movie.

Stanley Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I love the muppets and Jason Segal. Hope this doesnt take him away from 'How I Met Your Mother'?
He should call his muppet movie,'Forgetting Muppets Treasure Island'.

Charles Grodin Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

"All I ever wanted was you,
a dream come true,
oh, Miss Piggy,
it's youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!"

Snarf Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

Oh please, please please please please...ever since Miss Piggy appeared in the first Aussielo TV I've been jonesing for a return of the Muppets...Pigs In Space in paticular.

jcarla Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Squeeee indeed. I would love to introduce my niece and nephew to the jows of the muppet show. I remember how my brother and friends - all in high school! - watch the show every week.

Fletch Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

Oh dear, here's something I didn't consider. Who will the guest stars be? They won't EVER be as cool as Elton John, Alice Cooper, or Sly Stallone...

Tina Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Oh gosh this is going to be brilliant

My parents used to watch this with my older sister when she was a baby...so much so that there are pictures of my dad with a Kermit muppet doing shows for her.

Melinda65 Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

I'm totally excited, as long as it's not given a more "adult" tone. Keep the Muppets family-safe (I don't even want an outtake reel that's adults-only.) No adulterating (hee, pun not intended) the Muppets.

Rich Haller Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Fantastic!
I've often wondered why one of my favorite shows left TV in the first place. To bad that Jim Henson is no longer with us, but his spirit lives on.

"It's time to put on makeup!"

Fletch Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

Two words - Statler and Waldorf.

You guys feeling me?
