Mark-Paul Gosselaar was 'Raising the Bar' with these cupcakes

Zack_attack_popwatch Aggghhh! Zack Attack! Mark-Paul Gosselaar dropped by this morning to tell us all about his new series Raising the Bar (premiering Monday night), in which he'll play a public defender with plenty of heart, hair. Mandi's dutifully compiling a sure-to-be-amusing Mark-Paul Through the Years gallery that'll post on Monday. Meanwhile, let's talk about how his awesome TNT publicist (and PopWatch reader -- hello again!) Susan brought a dozen obscenely oversized cupcakes for all of us aging Saved by the Bell superfans to graze on. This worked out perfectly, because I'm not allowed to eat obscenely oversized cupcakes unless a dreamy '90s high school TV icon feeds them to me. What are the odds? Mandi would like to point out how EW's various awards for "excellence" appropriately serve as a backdrop for photos of two loons eating cupcakes.

Yesterday, Zack's impending Attack had a bunch of us attempting to out-Saved by the Bell trivia each other in the hallway. Tim Stack absolutely won, nonchalantly name-dropping the duck killed by the oil spill near Bayside's football field in an emotionally charged impression of Zack Morris cradling said duck: "Don't worry, Becky. You're where the oil can't hurt you now."

Dear lord. What's the weirdest thing you remember from SBTB?

OMG the episode where they learn about subliminal advertising and Zach "hypnotizes" all the girls in school to take him to the Sadie Hawkins dance!

Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

Loved the sprain dance. Loved when Jessie and AC sang Michael Bolton and I believe they were dressed up like Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Loved the episode where Screech dressed up as a girl and told the girls his name was "Barbara Bush". Loved the song writing contest. Zach sang cool school, but Screech's song was the best (set to the tune of Home on the Range") "Home home at our school, something something drool?". Loved Zack Attack. "Friends forever, forever we'll be friends!". When Screech made the robot. When Lisa had the fashion show and her and Zach kissed and Screech was so mad. Zach drunk driving. The beach club. The Max. "We're the Bayside Tigers and we're on the prowl!". The weirdest thing about Saved by the Bell is AC Slater was considered a hunk. He was ugly then with his mullet and he is ugly now. Zach Morris forever!

DanOregon Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 07:04 AM EST

Weirdest? How bout that Lisa, Screech and Zack began the show at a Jr. High in Indiana with Mr. Belding then were transported enmasse to Bayside High.
Or that Screech's mom was played by Ruth Buzzi?

EM - that's not tori (leanna creel) on the commercial. that's her twin sister, monica creel.

reddot Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

Long hair or not...i will watch Mark-Paul in Raising the Bar...Good for him for not being afraid of changing his look to play a character. We have to remember its a character he is playing...i'm sure its not the way he looks in real life.

Rahul Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

Most of the series was weird. I remember too much of it.

Sara Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

I was always partial to the special edition-type episodes, like when they worked at the beach resort and whatshername from King of Queens was Zack's love interest and AC Slater saved Denise Richards from drowning. And of course the Hawaiian-style episode where they save Kelly's grandfather's hotel.

mgm Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

My 8 year old watches SBTB on The N every night and when I told her that I used to watch them when I was growing up she asked, "You mean this isn't a new show?" The clothes, the hair, HELLO!

Sarah Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

Kayla - Your "Mrs. Belding" response has me spitting Diet Coke all over my computer. Hilarious!!!

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

Had I known you were speaking to him I would've begged you to ask him to cut the hair - come on Mark-Paul, you're better than that!

NineDaves.com Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

i may or may not know all the choreography to hot sundae's "go for it!"

Jeff Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

sorry, Progressive commercial

Jeff Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

oh my God, Em, you are correct! That is Tori from the Geico commerical!

Coconutty Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

I think the chameleon belonged to Slater.

Heather Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

One of my all time favorites is the episode with their band "Zack Attack." I still know all the words to their song "Friends Forever." Classic.

Cinderella Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

How about when Screech's pet lizard died and Jessi sang an elegy to the tune of "Danny Boy"? To this day, I can't hear that song without hearing the lyrics "And there'll be bugs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in that great chameleon's banquet in the sky."

Coconutty Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

I watch SBTB in the mornings on TBS as I'm getting ready for work. The other day, one of the early Miss Bliss episodes was on, where Mr. Belding doesn't want the kids to have a dance. Milo was saying that his 8th grade dance was "the best time of his life." I thought that was kinda weird.

I hate Miss Bliss's best friend. I wonder why they replaced Mikey with AC Slater, probably b/c he wasn't good looking enough, same thing w/Nikki being replaced by Jessie Spanow.

Gretchen Weiners Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

One of them had a chameleon called Artie that died. And they had a memorial service for him where they sang a song to the tune of "Danny Boy" - "Oh Artie boy..the hills, the hills are calling... to that big chameleon banquet in the sky." I can't listen to "Danny Boy" without singing this.

Chris G Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 06:50 AM EST

Uh I believe it was Screech who said Becky was where the oil can't hurt her. I know because it's playing right now on my iPod. Yes i said my iPod.

Bobbi Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

Much too old to have watched Saved By The Bell. Never knew Mark existed until he joined NYPD Blue. Loved him in that and am really looking forward to Raising The Bar. But could you PLEASE tell him to cut his hair? It looks AWFUL!!

Michelle Mastro Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

CRUMBS CUPCAKES!!!!!!!!!
CRUMBS CUPCAKES!!!!!!!!!
CRUMBS CUPCAKES!!!!!!!!!

LPR Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:05 AM EST

"It seems like only yesterday we started... but soon we'll put away our books and pens. We'll go on with our lives once we have parted... But how can we say farewell to our friend. The double dates, the parties, and the dances. Cramming for a midterm until 3. The football games, the laughs, and the romances. Soon Bayside will be just a memory (memory)..."
or maybe Annie can ask Zack to sing "Cool School" in his throaty lemony voice??

kayla Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 09:31 PM EST

I met MR. Belding a few months ago. He came to my school and was pretty awesome. He gave us his life story and talked about how he got the role on SBTB; it was actually kinda a motivational speech but it worked. He picked me to play a SBTB trivia game with a couple other people and I won a picture of the cast. He signed it for me after and took a picture with me. He thought I was awesome because during the game I gave one of the most obvious answers ever: Belding-What was my wife's name on the show?
Me-Mrs. Belding
Totally got a high five out of that one. He thought it was the funniest thing, but the people who were more serious and knew the correct answer just gave me death stares. But now I have my picture hanging up in my dorm and show it off as often as possible.

Jackie Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I can't believe no one has said that mystery-dinner episode that was SO random. Why were they there again? who was that dude? did they really NOT know they were in the Clue house playing Clue?

and WoW, knowing the name of the duck? awesome. but i love the episodes in the beginning with Miss Bliss (aka Hayley Mills) and her CrAzY best friend/fellow teacher with that annoying soft voice. Loveddd it when she had that random game-show thing with that weird big machine? HOW COOL?

Meganne Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

How can anyone forget the Barbara Ann dance?! Screech, Slater, and Zack singing Ba-Ba-Ba-Ba-Barbara Ann Risky Business style at the party?!?!

kelli Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

how, HOW, i ask has no one mentioned:

"the sprain"

the episode where Zach drives drunk (on a very special episode...)

the "beautiful dreamer" episode with Miss Tori Spelling as Violet

and of course, the college years and that odd roommate with the really weird voice!!

marilinda Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

How about how the Zack Attack gang had two graduations and three proms!

I also love the birthday party for Screech in Belding's office. I mean really, that is THE most logical place for a birthday party.

Ep Sato Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

I have an oddball connection to Mark Paul. Back in 2000, I started a job with a Senator at the same time as a few other colleagues. Rollcall, the local Hill newspaper did a piece on the new staffers. Opposite our photo was a promo (with a photo) for Mark-Paul's new show "DC".

What struck me most was that while our group consisted of some relatively good looking people, the photo across the page of the "DC" cast made us look like junkyard dogs. It just stood to bring out just how out of touch with the real DC that show was.

Anyway, Mark Paul made his comeback later and the show was forgotten, but I'll never forget what a contrast those photos seemed to make.

Hateful Loser Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

I heard J-Hud was coming to eat those cupcakes, Zack! Better run!

laylagalise Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

The weirdest thing?

The dream where Kelly was wearing a pizza as a hat. Also, that Screech is one of the biggest geeks in school but he's best buds with the cool kids. That's really weird.

Fletch Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Weirdest? Either Jessie all whacked out on uppers, singing "I'm So Excited" or Leah Remini as Zack's summer love interest.

Or "The New Class". God, what was THAT all about?

mscisluv Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Haha...the caffeine pill meltdown is totally my most memorable SBTB moment!

Melinda65 Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

When Zack was dressed up like a girl (I forget why) and Screech wanted to go steady with him/her right after they "met."

Annie Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

My friend and I enjoy performing the choreography from the triumphant "Buddy Bands" commercial/music video. "They work."

Julie Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

It would be a lot easier to list the things I don't remember from that show. My knowledge of SBTB trivia is almost disgusting; I'm thinking of organizing trivia tournaments and hussling unsuspecting casual fans. It'll pay my way through college!

MAC Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

When Zach dated cute homeless girl Laura and then invited Laura and her dad to spend Christmas w/him and his mom. Oh Bayside...
Also T-I-G-E-R-ESSSSSS, T-I-G-E-R-Essss. We're the bayside tigers and we're on the prowl...

Sabrina Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Just say nope to dope.

Sarah Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Whenever Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys come on, my sister and I talk about the episode where the guys dance to it in their underware and Slater does the splits while the girls are watching at the door with Violet played by Tori Spelling.

Jennifer Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Damn, Arsenio beat me to it! I also loved when Jessie & Slater sang "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" at the dance when Kelly & Zack broke up, and n eithereven TRIED to hide that tehy were lip-syncing!

Jennifer Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Everyone remembers "I'm so excited! I'm so... scared!" I am a true dork because I remember the words to the actual song that was going to make the girls music superstars if only Jessie hadn't become a drug addict: "Put your mind to it/Go for it/Get down and break a sweat/Rock and Roll/You ain't seen nothing yet!" And they sang it AEROBICS gear, people!

EP Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

It's a toss up between the Jessie Spano "I'm so excited!" drug episode, the "Buddy Bands" ep or the episode where Jessie and Graham, aka the male Jessie, protest the use of styrofoam cups in the cafeteria.

Arsenio Billingham Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Put your mind to it, go for it,
Get down and break a sweat,
Rock and Roll,
You ain't seen nothing yet!

The name of the group? Hot Sundae

Sarah Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Same here Winona, my sister still re-enacts that scene every time that song comes on or anything with someone for the cast is on.

Jennifer Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

To this day, my favorite episode is when Mrs. Belding has her baby while stuck in the elevator.

Fatima Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I want to watch the show, but every time I see that hair, I reconsider. It doesn't even look like it is attached to his head.

Winona Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Jessie Spano's caffeine pill "I'm so excited! - I'm so scared!" freakout... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bflYjF90t7c
I don't know why that particular moment is etched into my subconscious, but still...

Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

i thought that was tori in the progressive commercial too, but i guess she is a triplet in real life and it's actually one of her sisters?

Alex9 Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

The gang--while at a mall to buy U2 tickets--picks up a briefcase full of money that is the property of the Mob. Two burly guys with bad greasy hair chase them until it is revealed that the whole thing was a candid-camera type TV show.

Snarf Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

The constant hair and fashion faux-pas

Verity Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

When Pluto was dethroned as a planet, I immediately though of the the SBTB episode where Screech taught Zack an unhelpful mnemonic to remember all the planets in order, which he later used to win a big "battle of the brains"-type contest. MVEMJSNUP tragically is no more.

Em Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

I think the girl who played "new girl/leather jacket wearing tomboy, Tori" is currently on one of those progressive auto insurance with the tricked out nametag girl.
