In Memoriam: LeRoi Moore

Aug 20, 2008, 04:13 PM | by Jaya Saxena

Categories: In Memoriam, Music

Daveleroi_l LeRoi Moore, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, passed away yesterday afternoon due to complications from an ATV accident in late June. He was 46.

Moore and Matthews first teamed up in 1991 in Charlottesville, VA. After pulling together the rest of the band, they released the album Remember Two Things. Seven studio albums later, the Dave Matthews Band has become one of the most popular bands in America. Moore brought jazz and blues influences to the band's easygoing jam-rock sound: From the deep rumble on “Bartender” from the Lilywhite Sessions, to the high-pitched bounce of the tenor notes in “Stay,” Moore brought both life and a playful sensibility to his music.

Moore was one of the less vocal members of the group, preferring to eschew the spotlight. Back in 2001, Dave Matthews spoke with EW music critic Chris Willman, and said of Moore, “He's a tortured soul, but man, when he plays, he plays the most pretty melodies in the world, instantly. And Leroi plays melodies that are brand new that sound as if he's been playing them forever.”

The band announced Moore's passing at their show last night at L.A.'s Staples Center, with Matthews saying, “It’s easier to leave than to be left.” Though Moore is gone, we still have his music, and that will live on through his fans. Please post your condolences, and your memories of Moore, below.

RIP Leroi Moore. All the best to his family and the band. Leroi did what we all strive to do with our time here, and he did it millions of times over. He made people happy. He will be missed.

Thank you for your music. As pass times fade in memory it still keeps shining. Drinking whiskey by fire light barefoot and singing we dance.

I am absolutely speechless. The melodies that you have played raised the hair on the backs of our necks, made us Awww in amazement, and pulled every raw emotion of ours to the surface. Dave Matthews Band will never be the same without you. Forever loved, Forever Missed.

Korkee Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:53 AM EST

LeRoi you made the bands music your own and I wish your family the best in the future. Let them bury you shallow so that you may feel the rain.

Patrick Slaats Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 05:03 PM EST

Leroi, you surely will be missed... Allthough I haven't seen you or DMB perform, I loved and STILL love to hear your music....
My thoughts go out to the family and friends...

I just found out about Leroi through Facebook and I must say that I feel sick to my stomach. I listen to DMB's CD's everyday and try to match the strokes of genius on my Les Paul Special II. I am deeply saddend by this news. I feel as if The Band is a part of me and we are family. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you.

"Crash" was the very first music album I ever owned. I got it with a boombox with a tape-player when I was nine-years-old. I've loved Dave Matthews Band ever since. I particularly loved LeRoi's woodwind work - he mastered every sax there is and had the prowess to improvise with all of them as if he thought and felt in musical notes. He was an amazing musician, and I'll miss him like crazy. My condolences to his family and band-mates.

Good advice from a perfect stranger: Always check for misspelled words before you post.
Beautiful.

My husband, Chris, daughter, Lucy and I were leaving for vacation when we heard the news of LeRoi's passing. We decided then to dedicate our camping vacation to the memory of LeRoi. We listened to DMB all weekend. Lucy, who is 4 years old, loves 'Ants Marching'. We listened over and over again to that beutiful song that has so much of LeRoi's soul. I have a copy of the Staples concert from August 19, 2008. I can never make it through without shedding tears. You can hear the sorrow in the music. I have been a DMB fan since I first heard them in the early '90s. I didn't know LeRoi, but I know his music. We saw DMB at Post Gazette, PA on May 31, 2008. I thought, "how great to see Tim play with them." Now I know that what was really great was seeing LeRoi for the last time, and not even knowing it. I have seen DMB more times than I can remember, but that show is emblazed in my memory forever. God rest you merry gentleman.

Chad Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 11:11 PM EST

Some of the sweetest notes in music that I have heard came from your soul,I know. I didn't know you, but I would have liked you, I'm sure. Thank you for sharing.

Shannon Sisell Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

I started listening to you guys back in '97, later started a DMB cover band in '01. LeRoi was the greatest inspiration to me. Right there with Lester Young. He will always be remembered, and his music shall live forever.
Rest in Harmony.

Music lost a great Musician...i'm shure he was also a great human being... my condolences to the family and friends. Hugo, from Portugal.

I've been a DMB fan for over 10 years and was heartbroken to hear of LeRoi's untimely passing. May he rest in peace and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Mike Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Love ya' (now miss you) and the band. Your music and show after show brought joy to my life past words. I think of you and am concerned about the future of DMB without you, and know things have forever died in many ways. My last shows seeing you, Hollywood Bowl '07. Hope you're playing for God now.

Aaron Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I had the pleasure of seeing LeRoi and DMB play about a dozen times through the last couple years. He truly was a great talent. He definitely was the one guy in the band I knew least about. Just shows that it was about the music to him. He didn't seem to care for the spotlight once he was off the stage. My prayers are with his family and friends. All of those live cd's and dvd's are a little more special now. I'm sure they will find a fabulous talent to replace him, but we all know it'll never be the same. God bless.

shannon Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

Leroi will be greatly missed. His music will live on in the hearts of all dmb fans and we all will all hold his memory close to our hearts. DMB wont be the same without you and your heart and soul.

burkey Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Seth - it would be great if you would just go out and play hopscotch on a busy highway.
Thanks.

Jack Dudley Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 02:43 AM EST

Jim French Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

I came to the party late as a D.M.B. fan - I really never listened until a few years ago - I checked out one of their concerts on video and knew immediately, this is an accomplished group that is more than seriously talented - you will never replace that chemistry that Leroi had with his fellow band members and brothers - with all of the absolute idiots in the entertainment industry, it would seem that something special was taken from us too soon - I am not certain anyone would have missed Brittany for very long, if you are comparing talent - I will miss the soul that was Leroi in the D.M.B - it will never be the same - peace to his family - fond memories for all.

Sarah Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Seth, dude.. get a life! LeRoi was a very important part to DMB.. I've been listening to them since I was in elementary school.
Get over yourself!! How disrespectful for you to bash people for giving their respects to one of the greatest musicians of all time ON THE ARTICLE OF HIS DEATH?!
People like you make me sick.

LeRoi and the rest of DMB created music that was an escape or safe haven for many people, myself included. You must not have ever seen them play live, because if you had, you wouldn't have your head so far up your ass.

So, with all due respect to you (which is obviously not much), I hope someone pays you the same disrespect when you pass.

Go die.

Seth Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

It amazes me. These people on here speak about the man as though they knew him for years. Losers! Like he was there best friend and there boyfriend. I'm sorry he passed away. He was a good muscician. Lets leave it at that. Losers!

Tommy Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

LeRoi... We'll always miss u man... still can't hold my tears when I listen DMB music, especially #41 & #34 song. We love you... R.I.P. my bro LeRoi at heaven

brett Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

thank you for everything

nathalie Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

Just listening to a compilation of many of Leroi's sax parts and solos and ... and I am still at a loss for words about this great music artist... well...maybe not.. He truly just added that little spunk to all DMB's songs that they needed, at the right time, with that flavor of Roi straight from his soul. I am truly blessed in my life to have heard, related to, intoroduced others to, and seen this great man, and this great band perform their hearts out many times live. God bless Roi up there and all his freinds, family, and fans. Peace

marney Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

I met this man. I knew this man very briefly but he was one of the kindest, gentlest souls I have ever known. What a terrible loss for his family and for DMB. He has been in my prayers since the accident. To loose a man with such talent and passion is unimaginable. His music will live on and now his music is part of God's choir. LeRoi you are loved and will be missed. I will always remember Piedmont Park and will have it with me forever. Thank you for the gift and Happy #22 again and again. With love and devotion from the blond on the board.

Lou E Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

LeRoi you were the burning example of what a Sax player should look like and play like! When I see you on a pic I automatically think DMB. Man it's going to take some getting used to not to see you with the awesome DMB!! We miss you dog!!

ktfromVA Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

I remember walking into the Floodzone at age 19, and just seeing DMB for the first time. I was BLOWN away, and as corny as it seems, it was a life changing moment. The band was such a part of me, and the music is ingrained in my soul.

LeRoi, god bless. Thank YOU! Your music and soul live on forever!

Donna G Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

I took my son to his 1st DMB concert in 1996 for his 13th B-day present. I have been a fan ever since and my son an even bigger one. He is a musician and plays every DMB song ever written. He had not heard of Leroi's passing, it is ironic I informed him. Leroi, his family and the members of DMB are in my thoughts and prayers. This is such a shock to loose such a talent at such a young age. I know Dave and the guys will honor his memory well and Leroi will smile down from heaven. God Bless you all !!

Dave Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

This is such a terrible loss to an incredibly talented group. You have left a legacy of music that has inspired many, and left a sense of loss among all those who have shared time with you. May the four winds blow you safely home...

Shane Scott Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Leroi will live on in the hearts of the fans. The greatest tribute to Leroi is to have DMB continue to play his music across the world. Though it will never be the same without him, the show must go on. Thats what any great musician would want.

Craig Barolet Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

After 15 years and 36 shows I feel like I've lost a member of my family. I didn't know him personally but I feel like they're all my brothers. Thier music has been with me constantly, usually daily for almost half of my life. I don't want to believe its true. Im shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of our LeRoi. We should all take a moment to pray for LeRoi, the band and thier families. And pray for the fans too. We've been dealt the tragic loss of a terribly gifted musician, but more importantly we've lost a gentle, sweet, humble, man, who posesed a beautiful warm heart and soul. Rest in Peace, Roi. You've left a void that cannot be filled. You will be terribly missed.

Debra K Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

I'm not really sure what to say. when i heard the news, my eyes filled with tears because i realized what the world lost. This is an enormous lose for the dave matthews band as a group and all of their adoring fans. LeRoi was an amazing sax player and incredible to watch live. i am a fan of the band and their music in infinite proportions. when i describe how dmb's music makes me feel, i simply refer to it as my happy music because no matter what, when i listen to the music and lyrics i become inspired and enthused about life and how great it can be. not only did the world lose a phenominal muscician, but what i'm sure was a great person as well. my deepest sympathy to LeRoi's family, friends, and bandmates. all i can hope is that dmb will continue to dazzle the world with their unbelievable talent and keep LeRoi's spirit alive through the music. with greatest sympathy, one of your biggest fans!!!!

Brad Randolph Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I have been enchanted by the unique and beautiful sounds of the Dave Matthews Band since I first heard them in 1993. There are times when all you need to hear is a whisper of LeRoi's sax talent tofuel instrumental energy. As a musician in my own right, I have had a hard time dealing with this particular sad news. I knew him, personally...through his soulful music, as we all did and will continue to for the rest of our lives. He showed us through his eclectic style and versatility how to heal ourselves through the power of music. Not just sound...but pure music. I incorporated improvisational styles into my own music based on just this band alone...no John Mayer, no Hendrix, no Jim Morrison, no Floyd, no Zeppellin.....just the Dave Matthews Band. LeRoi was a teacher in his own way just by showing up; he was a leader and a follower just like the entire band has to be for their abilities to become a reality; he was and will continue to be forever in my top two horn players..with Wynton Marsalis being number two. I love him then, I love him now, and I will never stop loving him for who he was. An inspiration to me and my family...and to his own. He is LeRoi Moore. May the angels all gather 'round and hear him play his sweet melodic presence through Heaven. Rest, my brother. Rest now. You're friends and family are forever grateful for your soulful life. I love you all.

Deidre Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

Words can"t express the loss we all feel DMB fans are like family. Our little group has traveled together for 11 years to see them, we are from all different backgrounds, religions, races...our bond is this band and what they give to us. LeRoi man I hope you are having some fun wherever your at, just know that we all drank red wine, smoked, danced barefoot in the back yard singing at the top of our lungs. I am sure we were a sight a bunch of old folks going crazy but it felt like the only thing we could do. We love you all !!!

Alexis Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

LeRoi we loved you and are blessed to have been apart of your world just for a little while we will miss you desperatly! P.S. our thoughts are with you DMB keep the music alive.

sam Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Man cant believe it still....Such a huge part of a world class band. Will be missed

Jenni Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST

I still feel the shock of this loss and can't even imagine how his family, friends, and bandmates feel! This band has brought so many wonderful memories to my friends and I. My fiancee and I actually had our first conversation about a DMB CD. I know that Leroi is keeping heaven happy with his sweet sounds. Bless you and all the lives you have touched.

Erin Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

It really says something about a person when so many people take the time to sing your praise! I am still at a loss for words, but not at a loss for beautiful music. Thanks for the melodies and memories LeRoi. Me and the rest of your fans will make sure that the rest of the guys keep on playin'!

Erica Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

I was shocked by the news of Leroi's passing. The music world has truly lost a dedicated, talented and wonderful musician. He will truly be missed by so many. My prayers and condolences go towards his family and his friends.

Taz Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 09:18 PM EST

I heard the news and sat silent for moments. Celebrities aren't to be mourned any more than anyone, but those that are not only blessed with an amazing talent but the ability and genuine gratiousness as to bless the world with it are to be commended and honored. You will truly be missed for the joy and great times you have imparted on fans like myself. I envy the stars for their continued good fortune of hearing your 'voice.'

Amanda Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

My thoughts and prayers go out to LeRoi's family and friends. Thank you for the beautiful music that turned into memories for so many. Music truly touches peoples lives and Heaven now sounds a little sweeter.

A DMB Fan Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Leroi Moore was a man of giving, passion for music, and the soul of DMB. They will never be the same without Leroi. His talent graced us with good music, but now, we must give back. When I heard this, I was at a block party last night. My cousin saw my DMB shirt and said, there was something on the radio about the sax guy, he died. All I did was sit there for minutes on end, thinking, he was too young. I'm his age. His life was ruined, and all we can do is say thank you. Rest in Peace, soul and all.

since 1998 I have been waiting to see DMB. Tonight I had the pleasure but I knew a great force was missing. As a fellow musician, I can attest to the difficulties of losing a bandmate and friend. LeRoi, your interplay of melodies with Boyd on "Spoon" always has me in tears, no matter how many times I've heard it. I regret not seeing DMB sooner only because I missed out on you. Wherever you are, keep making your heavenly music.

Muhammad Badran Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 02:43 AM EST

RIP LeRoi

Muhammad Badran Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 02:34 AM EST

WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF LEROI'S DEATH, I WAS PLAYING CARDS WITH MY SISTER. IT WAS THE NIGHT OF THE STAPLES CENTER CONCERT AND I WAS WONDERING IF THE NEWS WOULD BRING UP THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND SINCE THEY WERE PLAYING IN LOS ANGELES. BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ANCHORWOMAN ANNOUNCED THAT LEROI MOORE HAS DIED. I GOT UP AND JUST STOOD IN FRONT OF THE TELEVISION. MY HEART DROPPED COMPLETELY AND FOR A SECOND I THOUGHT I WAS DREAMING. THE FIRST THING I DID WAS CRY AND NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF MOORE'S DEATH BUT ALSO FOR HOW DAVE AND ALL THE OTHER CREW MEMBERS MUST HAVE FELT. ALL I CAN SAY NOW IS MAY LEROI REST IN PEACE AND GOD BLESS HIM AND THE REST OF THE BAND. I FEEL FOR YOU DAVE AND I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU!!!!!

Alexander Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

How do you mourn someone that has given you so much of themselves without ever asking you for anything in return? There was this beautiful sound that LeRoi Moore put into a world of confusion and noise, and helped to make things seem less chaotic. The Dave Matthews Band's music has helped me through some of the roughest times in my life. Now all I can do is shed my tears for this man who never knew me but helped me all the same. All I can do is pray and tell LeRoi "thank you for everything."

Bari Saxy Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Things we can not change.
It was Leroy's great tone that caught my ear when I heard DMB for the first time, I was hooked. Playing Bari Sax myself, I find great pleasure playing along w/ DMB on the stereo. People starred............ Thank you Leroy for sharing your passion with us. Your notes speak louder than words can express, always will.
Things we can not change

Dave might be the heart of the band, but LeRoi was the soul.

The band, their music, their story has always inspired me. I am deeply saddened by Leroi's passing. My condolences to the band, their families, and Leroi's family and friends.
The music industry has lost one of its brightest shining stars.
You will be missed.

Graham Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

LeRoi was a great sax player. 75 shows seeing him wailing on stage. The right side of the stage will never be the same. You will be missed,

Sean Harrington Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

So much to say here about his talent, which he sent to all of his fans through the peaceful and sometimes dramatic harmony of horns, sax and image.

I am a fan not only of his talents but of his life and I will miss this man that I never met. To those who feel that people who follow bands seem distracted, or ill accomplished...I might be both, but the music they created together made me feel better about the world and our need to be one rather than divided. This is the talent, the admiration, and reason we become one for maybe one night or entire life.

RIP LeRoi and I hope the strength of the other band members continue to spread that unforgettable message of unity.
Sean...Harrington, Going to the Gorge in a few days to see you again!

Jamie Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

LeRoi's multi-instrumental talents can never be replaced. He will be missed.

Ren Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

I am so sad to hear of Leroi's unfortunate passing. I remember my first show at a bar in Nags Head in the spring of '91 and immediately thought they were the best band I've ever seen and they are to this day. Leroi's loss will no doubt be difficult. I pray that his family and friends are touched by such an immense outpouring of positive memories of the joy he brought to so many.

Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

you never know when you will lose a loved one. A loved artist. An energy. It is the ..huge empty space that you are left with. To Le Roi, tohis family and to DMB, love, and please stay... Yes.. just STAY

Words cant express. Rest in peace, you will be greatly missed.

John Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

As far as I'm concerned, LeRoi was the heart and soul of the Dave Matthews Band. Think of the beautiful harmonies and arrangements he made. He could coax sounds sweet or playful, gruff or funky from that horn. Every time he played a solo, you felt his soul pouring out right there on stage.

LeRoi, you touched my heart. You made me laugh, you made me cry, you made me dance with joy. You may be gone, but your music and your spirit will live forever in my heart.

I love you, brother.

Julia504 Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Everytime is hear LeRoi Moore jam with the drummer in #41 on DMB's live CD, I cry - happy tears. My dad was a sax man and my brother was a drummer. Both have passed away and I think of them in heaven jamming when I hear that song. Maybe LeRoi can find them and join in. I know they would feel privileged as we have been hearing LeRoi play over the years. Thanks, LeRoi, for sharing your gift.

Dante Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

This was the man and his music is the coolest!!!!

Liz Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

I've been listening to DMB religiously since I heard of the tragedy as a memorial to LeRoi. Amazingly I've noticed references to death in each and every song but with encouragement to live it to the fullest while you're here. Who'd have known. And on one of the first 3 songs was a "happy birthday" wish to LeRoi at one of the more recent concert recordings... My sincerest condolences to the entire Dave Matthews Band immediate and extended family. We are all feeling your great loss. Love always!

Mary Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

I am going to the concert tonight, a summer ritual for the past 10 years, and it will not be the same with out LeRoi. You are missed!

Rick Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

There are very few bands where EACH member plays such a critical role in the success of the band's music. Leroi truely made that contribution to the band's talent and will be missed.

Britt Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

I am truly saddened over the loss of such as amazing soul. You will be deeply missed, LeRoi!! You and your music will live on in the hearts of so many.

The world lost an unbelievable musician today. And with Dave Matthews Band, they have lost a brother and a pivotal force in the band itself. Prayers for the members of the band, and for the LeRoi's family. RIP LeRoi Moore

SuSu Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

2 days before his death he played in Dallas and it marked the 13 year anniversary for me seeing DMB live. It was so strange not to have him there. He will be deeply missed.

Jason Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 11:05 PM EST

I also saw DMB live for the first time this year. I was disappointed to hear that LeRoi would not be performing due to his injury. He was an amazing talent on screen and on the airwaves, I'm certain that he would have been amazing in person. Cheers to you, LeRoi!

Cathryn Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

This year was my first time seeing DMB live and, having been a fan for most of my young life, I was of course saddened by not being able to see LeRoi. Now to know that I will in fact never get to see one of the founding members of my favourite band, it's almost too hard to think about. Godspeed, LeRoi, and thank you for bringing such touching music to this world.

His name says it all - The King. Rest in peace, LeRoi.

Alexander Correia Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

Why does god do this? Dave Matthews Band is the ONLY music i listen to. The band will never be the same without him. God, it was great when in the "So Much To Say" music video right at the end where he gives a big old smile, haha it was priceless. Godspeed LeRoi, your a great person, and a great musician, and your music won't be forgotten, at least by me.

Deb Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

It's so very obvious by the posts of fans that we will all miss his presence on the stage but we will always have his music and the memory of his virtuosity. Nobody played the way he did. My guess is he's probably somewhere in heaven jamming with Bob Marley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kurt Cobain, Keith Moon, Isaac Hayes and
Marvin Gaye. They were all some of the exceptional artists taken from us before their time.

We are lifting LeRoi's family and DMB up in prayer. No show will ever be the same. The show this summer was great with Coffin filling in, but they will never be the same without him up front. The world has lost one of the greats.

I am a native Virginian and started listening to dave matthews while they were still in their Charlottesville, VA days... though I was only 11, i still grasped the beauty in their music and LeRoi was always a huge component in that beauty. His talent brough tears to my eyes and goose bumps on more than occasions than I can count. He will be TRULY missed. RIP.

The only thing that I can say is that Leroi was loved by all DMB fans as well as anyone that enjoys the sound of a soulful Saxaphone. I will miss his sweet music and remember him fondly. Rest in peace, LeRoi. We love you.
